IN MEMORY OF BOB CRAIG, FOUNDING PUBLISHER

©2013 Thanks to the dawn of the information age, we believe distribution/circulation not only encompasses hard copies printed and the pass-on rate of those hard copies, but web browsing and electronic copies being downloaded by our growing online readership. This has become a substantial boost to the number of readers of our magazine. Currently, an average of 30,000 hard copies are printed biweekly. Studies have shown each hard copy has a probable “pass-on rate” of two to three, meaning each hard copy taken will be seen by two to three additional readers. With the pass-on rate alone, estimated readership can conservatively average 55,000 to 90,000, not encompassing visitors who visit us online at FrontiersLA.com.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

Leading by Example

Francisco Armenta: Designing a Brighter Future By Sebastian Martin Peréz Francisco Armenta is one of the first in an ambitious pilot internship program launched by the Frontiers Awareness & Education Foundation. A Boyle Heights native, longtime HIV activist and aspiring graphic design and multimedia artist, Francisco embodies the energy, innovation and grassroots sensitivity to propel the entire LGBT community into a healthier and happier future. As the youngest person ever to become a certified HIV test counselor in the nation in 2008, Francisco has combined his visionary artistic eye with his passion for empowering the most negatively impacted within the LGBT community through imagery that connects at-risk youth to social services and enrichment programs. When did you start your career in multimedia and HIV activism? It all started when I was 15 and had recently come out as gay. At the time, I was helping organize around AB 537 in my high school—the California bill that protects youth that either were or perceived to be LGBT. I linked up with a local nonprofit, REACH L.A., and they helped me produce postcards to distribute throughout LAUSD. I had to teach myself how to use Photoshop Adobe, and it took a few tries but I came up with a design called “Deep Darkness.” I wanted the image to connect with LGBT youth who might feel isolated, or HIV-positive youth who might have fallen into a deep depression, so we circulated this campaign to make sure they knew there were resources and a community that made it a priority to tell them they were wanted. I want to make images that heal.

14

FRONTIERSLA.COM

Tell me more about the work you’ve done with and through REACH L.A. REACH L.A. has opened a lot of doors for me. Some of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve had as a test counselor have informed the policy recommendations I’ve contributed to. Many youth have no direction after finding out the results of their [HIV test]. The best we could do is point them to resources that can provide treatment and care, but it was directly on them to seek it out. So I came up with providing policy recommendations that streamline youth into regular care and treatment. They are now being implemented at REACH L.A., Children’s Hospital and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. REACH L.A. has also let me connect to communities I never would have thought I’d be able to. I have spent six months both in South Africa and Northern Ireland to share best practices for risk reduction. But locally, I’ve connected with the Los Angeles house and ball community. REACH L.A. hosts the Ovahness Ball, the largest ball held on the West Coast. How has your internship with the Frontiers Awareness & Education Foundation changed your perspective on the work you do? The internship has truly been great. I’ve been connecting with art directors, editors and marketing professionals who hold us interns to extremely high standards. I’ve learned new strategies in effective messaging and really reaching your target audience to elicit the appropriate reaction. It has also

taught me not to beat myself up over things that are outside of my control, like not yet having my Bachelor’s degree, for example. The internship has helped me realize that despite power structures in play that may hinder my success as a Latino, owning my voice is one way to reach my goals. I have big dreams, but I have these dreams because I want to be in a position of power so that I can help youth facing adversity like what I face now. And not just gays or Latinos, but anyone who faces adversity, regardless of their gender identity, race or ethnicity. Any current projects you would like to share with us? Along with six other urban artists, I was selected to design a T-shirt that will be sold at Macy’s in the Beverly Center, coming fall 2013. As an HIV tester/counselor, my piece was inspired by the struggle against HIV/AIDS and the fact that we keep adding rounds to that fight. I want to declare all-out war against HIV/AIDS. People are still wounded in battle, and there are so many young gay men like me who are on the frontlines of infection, because we are at highest risk. My hope is that people know their options, their status, where to go if infected, where to go to get Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) , and all their options, so that we can collectively eliminate fear and stigma of HIV.

Chelsea Manning

No Hormone Therapy for Manning, Military Says Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning (formerly Bradley), sentenced to 35 years at the all-male Ft. Leavenworth, Ken., military prison on charges stemming from her having leaked reams of classified government documents to WikiLeaks, announced Aug. 13 that she is transgender, would henceforth be known as Chelsea and would request that the government provide her with hormone treatment, the AP reported. The prison “does not offer sex reassignment or hormone therapy for inmates housed at the facility,” a Ft. Leavenworth spokesperson said. Manning still hoped the military “will simply do the right thing” and provide the treatment, despite this refusal, so Manning does not have to file suit against the military in a civilian court, said his attorney, David Coombs. Coombs compared hormone therapy for Manning with treatment for high blood pressure. Manning announced on Aug. 26 that she would be willing to pay for estrogen treatment herself if necessary.

Marriage Equality Spreading in NM County by county, New Mexico appears to be bobbing and weaving its way toward marriage equality along the quirkiest path of any state to date. On Aug. 26, state District Judge Alan Malott ordered the Bernalillo County Clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples because New Mexico law includes no prohibition on gay marriage. Bernalillo County includes Albuquerque, the state's biggest city. A judge in Santa Fe County had issued a similar ruling shortly before, and the Doña Ana County Clerk had already begun issuing licenses, the Santa Fe New Mexican reports. The next day, county clerks in San Miguel and Valencia Counties took it upon themselves to begin issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. With a new court ruling Aug. 27, Taos County became the sixth to join the marriage equality caravan. Republican lawmakers intend to file suit to stop marriage licenses from being issued.

Gay Vets’ Spouses Won’t Get Benefits Despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s having struck down parts of the Defense of Marriage Act, the spouses of gay military veterans will still be denied benefits available to their straight peers, at least for now, the Washington Blade reported Aug. 27. Title 38 of the U.S. Code, which governs veterans' benefits available through the Veterans Administration still defines spouses as persons of opposite sexes, according to an Aug. 14 letter authored by Sec. of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and obtained by the Washington Blade. The Charlie Morgan Act, a bill authored by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., that would eliminate the Title 38 bar, was voted out of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee July 24, and will proceed to the Senate floor. Meanwhile, Buzzfeed reported late on Aug. 29, a federal judge in California found that “federal veterans’ benefits laws that limit the benefits to opposite-sex spouses are unconstitutional.”

SPEAK OUT “If I don’t drop the rainbow flag, it [gay references] blows right by them. I talk about what’s going on in my life. I’m almost 50 and I have 4year-old white kids, so, come on, that’s comedy.” —Out comedienne Wanda Sykes, who will be performing at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach on Sept. 14.

NEWS By Peter DelVecchio

New Treasury and IRS Rules for Same-Sex Couples On Aug. 29, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service issued new guidelines for legally married same-sex couples following the Supreme Court’s ruling on June 26 striking down Sec. 3 of DOMA. Now these couples will be considered married for federal tax purposes, including income and gift and estate taxes. “Today’s ruling provides certainty and clear, coherent tax-filing guidance for all legally married same-sex couples nationwide. It provides access to benefits, responsibilities and protections under federal tax law that all Americans deserve,” Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew said in the release. “This ruling also assures legally married same-sex couples that they can move freely throughout the country knowing that their federal filing status will not change.” According to the Treasury: “The ruling applies to all federal tax provisions where marriage is a factor, including filing status, claiming personal and dependency exemptions, taking the standard deduction, employee benefits, contributing to an IRA and claiming the earned income tax credit or child tax credit.” However, the ruling does not apply to registered domestic partnerships, civil unions or similar formal relationships recognized under state law. “Freedom to Marry commends the administration’s swift implementation of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling for federal equality in an area that will have a direct, tangible impact on families’ financial health,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry. “The fact that this new respect applies only to married couples—not those joined by domestic partnerships or civil unions—highlights the need for an America where everyone can marry the person they love in any state and have that marriage respected at all levels of government.”

Quick Pic GLSEN Executive Director Dr. Eliza Byard spoke at the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. “Across this nation, voices are ready to rise for opportunity and justice for every young person, regardless of who they are, what they look like or who they love,” she said.

High LGBT Profile at March on Washington Celebrations

The summer of 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington, when throngs of African-Americans and their allies converged peaceably on the National Mall to demand the full measure of civil rights guaranteed them under the U.S. Constitution, and to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaim his dream. Half a century later, much has changed. This time around, LGBT Americans, largely invisible in 1963, have taken their place in the front ranks of those demanding equality. When tens of thousands gathered to commemorate the anniversary on Aug. 24 at the Lincoln Memorial, speaker after speaker lauded Bayard Rustin—an indispensable organizer of the original march— as a civil rights icon. Rustin, an openly gay black man—and hence a member of a very small species indeed in 1963—was shunted aside and marginalized 50 years ago. Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III, prominent organizers of the anniversary events, made a point of including LGBT speakers, including the American Federation of Teachers’ Randi Weingarten, and rainbow flags fluttered out among the crowd. But despite progress on some fronts, much remains the same. The movement that generated the 1963 march won such watershed victories as the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Interestingly, though, just months before the 50-year anniversary, the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, freeing Republican governments in Southern states to put in place voter suppression measures that had either been disallowed under the 1965 law or certainly would have been. And so the voting rights battle resumes. “This morning, we affirm that struggle must and will go on until every eligible American has a chance to exercise his or her right to vote,” Eric Holder, America’s first AfricanAmerican Attorney General, told the crowd on Aug. 24.

LGBT Russians Seek Asylum as Protesters Pressure Olympic Sponsors BY KAREN OCAMB

On Aug. 28, as tens of thousands of people marched to the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate 50 years since the 1963 March on Washington, 10 activists from GetEqual demonstrated in front of the Jamaican embassy in Washington, D.C.’s famed Dupont Circle, demanding an investigation of the murder of 17-year-old cross-dressing teenager Dwayne Jones on July 21 near Montego Bay, as well as ongoing anti-LGBT attacks in that country. Similar small protests were held in Boston and London. “Jamaica has long been called the most homophobic place on Earth,” said Cathy Kristofferson of the Stop the Hate and Homophobia Coalition, the Washington Blade reported. “The violence due

Protesting Coca-Cola

to homophobia has prompted hundreds of LGBT Jamaicans to seek asylum in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. Currently the country is doing nothing to distance itself from that label.” Meanwhile, on the streets of Times Square in New York City, also on Aug. 28, Queer Nation New York and other LGBT groups demanded that Coca-Cola revoke its sponsorship of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, because of the ‘anti-gay propaganda’ laws in effect throughout the country. The protesters dumped Coke into the streets and crushed Coke cans protesting the giant company’s participation. “By sponsoring the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Coca-Cola is associating its brands with state-sanctioned gay-bashing,” Queer Nation co-founder Alan Klein said in a press release. “Sponsoring the Games gives legitimacy to the host nation, and that is exactly what Coca-Cola did when it sponsored the 1936 Games in Nazi Germany. We hope that Coca-Cola does not ignore its own history and does the right thing by refusing to support another regime that targets groups for hatred.” Coca-Cola posted an immediate reply on its website. “We have long been a strong supporter of the LGBT community and have advocated for inclusion and diversity through both our policies and practices. We do not condone human rights abuses, intolerance or discrimination of any kind anywhere in the world,” the company said. “We are engaging with the International Olympic Committee on this important matter. We believe a more positive impact can be made through continued involvement, rather than by sitting on the sidelines.” It is not clear how, exactly, Coca-Cola is engaging with the International Olympic Committee, since the latest news from the IOC seems to support the Russian government. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak sent a letter to the IOC on Aug. 22 saying that since the law applies equally to anyone who expresses anything positive about gays, the law “cannot be regarded as discrimination based on sexual orientation” and therefore does not violate the Olympic Charter’s anti-discrimination policy.

And that was enough to satisfy the IOC, with IOC President Jacques Rogge saying, “We have today received strong written reassurances from the Russian government that everyone will be welcome at the games in Sochi regardless of their sexual orientation.” With no other recourse, LGBT people continue to pursue other avenues to apply pressure before the Olympic Games next February, including going after the Olympic sponsors. On Aug. 29, Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin sent a letter to the top sponsors to strongly and publicly oppose the law. (Read the HRC letter at tinyurl.com/ovup9b6.) Additionally, international LGBT organizations such as ILGA—the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association in Europe—are calling on European leaders meeting at the G20 summit Sept. 5-6 in St. Petersburg to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable. “So far Russia ignored all statements by international human rights organizations and case law of the UN Human Rights Committee and the European Court of Human Rights. That is why our coalition of human rights organizations is calling on the world leaders to openly and firmly confront Russia,” Gabi Calleja, Co-Chair of ILGAEurope's Executive Board, said in an Aug. 29 statement. “Democracy and respect for human rights are the core values of the European Union and a corner stone of its relations and policies towards all other countries. EU leaders cannot remain silent when those principles are brutally violated, and they need to make this crystal clear to President Putin." But Putin, President Barack Obama and no doubt all of the other leaders at the G20 summit in St. Petersburg will be debating what to do in Syria, where it is widely believed (though not yet confirmed by UN inspectors) that Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons—nerve gas—on hundreds of innocent civilians outside Damascus. Russia backs Syria. Meanwhile, Chechen terrorist Doku Umarov, a leader of insurgents seeking independence in the North Caucuses, has threatened “maximum force” to stop the Olympics—a threat that prompted

Putin to declare a “forbidden zone” around the resort city of Sochi and the Olympic Village from January until March. Police will determine who gets in and out, and all public gatherings are banned. That will prove interesting for the thousands of journalists planning to cover the Olympics who must arrive early to set up operations. Interestingly, the media is staying in a building with rainbow stripes. But the LGBT issue is not going away. Russianborn LGBT activist and journalist Masha Green, author of a critically acclaimed book on Putin, told MSNBC host Chris Hayes that the backlash has made the government squirm. “They’ve really squirmed,” Green said. “As long as the pressure is on, it’s not going to make them reconsider those laws. But it will possibly make them dial back the campaign of hate, and it can prevent the passage of further laws, including the law on removing children from same-sex families.” Green, who says she is out in Russia and hasn’t had too many problems since she’s wellknown—until the propaganda law—is emigrating to the U.S. out of fear that the next law Putin will pass will encourage the government to remove her children. The international and U.S. outrage continues. Even the American Kennel Club has asked the organization that puts on the World Dog Show to move the 2016 show out of Moscow. The group All Out is calling for a Global Speak Out on Sept. 3 in advance of the G20 summit; the multi-million dollar travel industry is trying to figure out how to respond—some tour operators have simply cancelled anything to do with Russia, while others are still debating.

“It’s certainly raised concerns for me, as a travel agent specializing in gay travel,” Tom Stephens of Santa Ana, Calif.-based Cruising with Pride, told Travel Weekly. “I have had a number of people tell me that they would definitely not be traveling to Russia because of the new antigay legislation and the recent rash of violence toward the gay community.” The gay RSVP Vacations has a planned Baltic cruise in 2014 with St. Petersburg as one port of call. Meanwhile, more cities are condemning the law and questioning their ‘sister city’ relationships with cities in Russia. Equality Florida has written letters to several city governments asking them to suspend their sister city relationships with Russian cities, including St. Petersburg. The City of Long Beach will consider a motion by Councilmember James Johnson and co-sponsored by Vice Mayor Robert Garcia and Councilmember Gerrie Schipske to condemn Russia’s anti-gay laws and possibly take action regarding its sister city relationship with Sochi, site of the 2014 Olympics. A MoveOn petition urging severing ties was up to 800 signatures by Aug. 28. In fact, the reaction from California has been strong. U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer sent Putin a letter saying, “I cannot stay silent while your country works to put in place deeply discriminatory laws and policies undermining the rights of LGBT individuals, which have already had tangible and dangerous consequences.” Additionally, Senate Resolution 18 by California Sen. Mark Leno and co-authored by 16 Senators and co-sponsored by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, is headed to the Senate floor. The resolution, which urges CalPERS and CalSTRS not to invest future

resources from their pension plans in Russia, passed the Senate Public Employment and Retirement Committee with a 4-1 bipartisan vote. “As the host of international events, including the Winter Olympics and the Miss Universe Pageant, it is unacceptable that Russia promote discrimination against people based solely on sexual orientation or gender identity,” Leno said. “California joins the worldwide outrage against these new laws and is in a unique position as one of the largest economies to make a strong statement that we will not tolerate nor invest in blatant violations of human rights.” L.A. City Councilmember Paul Koretz authored a resolution supporting Leno’s call for divestiture. Koretz has also called for a motion calling on Los Angeles to start an “open dialogue” with the governor of St. Petersburg. In response, on Aug. 20, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti sent a letter to Gov. Georgy Poltavchenko respectfully stating his concerns about the propaganda law Poltavchenko signed long before it reached the Russian Duma and Putin. Garcetti countered the argument that the law is designed to “protect children,” saying, “There is not legitimate research to show laws such as this one protect children in any way. However, there is mounting evidence that this legislation has created an unsafe environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Russia, as evidenced by consistent media reports of violence.” Garcetti asks that the sister cities work together “to ensure every one of our residents has a voice and to ensure all people are afforded safety and respect irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.” (Read the full letter at tinyurl.com/o6xzrzb)

LGBT Russians Seek Asylum as Protesters Pressure Olympic Sponsors Right now, the city of Los Angeles is committed to working with the Sister Cities organization to try diplomatic outreach with a clear condemnation, symbolized by hanging the rainbow flag on the St. Petersburg Sister Cities sign near City Hall and a strong resolution that also calls on the State Department to expand the U.S. asylum program. “We have a couple of choices,” said openly gay Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell. “We can either force the issue, which we are. Or we can sever ties and have no leverage whatsoever. And when you force the issue to a degree, you compel people to honor their higher selves— especially with the whole world watching.” O’Farrell said they are looking at other avenues to explore, including traveling to St. Petersburg “and having a conversation specific to our sister city agreement.” “We need to expand the asylum programs for members of the LGBT community who are being persecuted and tortured, whose lives are at risk,” said openly gay Councilmember Mike Bonin. “I’d like to see them expedite that process. It’s an incredibly lengthy process. It’s onerous—you need to get financial support. In a lot of the cases, so many of them are under the radar. If a woman is arrested and accused of being a lesbian, she often winds up being raped in custody. It’s too much. We need to not let asylum get tied up in endless bureaucratic red tape.” If diplomacy doesn’t work, Koretz said the city should consider more drastic measures. “We obviously have to respond,” Koretz said. “The question is how. I was looking at

22

a different motion that we’ve introduced to have our pension systems divest. It’s a different approach than working with Sister Cities. They’re kind of in conflict. So we’ll put it on a slower track so if there’s some success and some traction with working cooperatively without Sister Cities, then we’ll do that. But if not, I think L.A. needs to take a stronger stand. I think this is a more diplomatic approach. Mine is more of a sledgehammer approach. But we’ll give the diplomatic approach a shot first.” Darrel Cummings, Chief of Staff at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, announced a fund (at LAGaycenter.org) to help LGBT people in Russia. “We applaud the city of Los Angeles, a truly global city, for taking steps to demonstrate our solidarity with the LGBT community in Russia and in opposition to LGBT human rights abuses wherever they exist. Today represents a good step. There is more to be done.” Trip Oldfield, Executive Director of the Program for Torture Victims, was also at the rainbow flag unveiling. He said that in the past six months, PTV has helped 20-22 LGBT asylum seekers from Russia. “Right now we’re seeing a huge exodus of LGBT leaders from Russia who’ve been severely persecuted, raped, imprisoned—just horrible, horrible stories. We work to get them legal representation here in the U.S.—usually pro bono. But we’ve mainly worked to try to get them psychological counseling,” Oldfield said. “Two things have made the asylum process really bad—9/11 changed the asylum process, and then federal budget cuts that started in

2009 made it much, much worse.” Oldfield said that while social media has empowered people to stand up for their rights, “in other ways, it’s opening [individuals] up to intense amounts of persecution. Russia’s not the only hot bed for LGBT persecution. We see lots of Ugandans as well and Cameroon, [which] is number three.” Openly gay Rep. Mark Takano says the State Department is well aware of the situation. “I was in Russia two or three years ago for Thanksgiving week, and I spent some time there with the Charge-D’Affairs of the American Embassy,” Takano told Frontiers. “He told me then that the United States did recognize LGBT people in Russia as legitimate asylum seekers. If you were to come to the embassy and say, ‘I am a gay person and I am seeking refuge,’ that it was policy for the embassy to give them refuge.” Oldfield says Los Angeles and West Hollywood are primary destinations for LGBT Russians because of the existing large Russian populations. (See the expanded interview with Oldfield at FrontiersLA.com.) The City of West Hollywood is also keenly aware of the situation, which it will address more fully at its meeting on Sept. 16. Fran Solomon, Chief Deputy to Councilmember John Heilman, says they have already reached out to their contacts at the State Department as well as other local and state officials “to strategize” about providing asylum. She noted that the city has experience providing asylum, having helped the first wave of Jewish émigrés from Russia. “We know how to do this,” Solomon said.

Barry Brisco, 43 West Hollywood barrybrisconews@gmail.com It would be hard to accuse Barry Brisco of being lazy, as over the years this savvy bachelor has tackled and excelled in multiple fields. Barry initially earned a degree in education, which—combined with his quick wit and nononsense attitude—armed him for a commendable, thankless career in the Manhattan public school system. But pedagogy was soon eclipsed by Barry's true calling as a performer. A talented triple threat, he quickly developed a sterling reputation within the New York theater scene and abroad. His acting ability merited opportunities to travel the world, most notably to Edinburgh, where he starred in the critically acclaimed Fleetwood Coupe DeVille Show as well as the Australian tour of Puppetry of the Penis. Barry’s travels brought him to Los Angeles eight years ago, where his skill and Colgate smile were showcased in television series such as General Hospital, $#*! My Dad Says, Chocolate News and Thank God You're Here. At the 2012 Hollywood Fringe Festival, Barry received positive attention with Love Is A Battlefield, an original play showcasing his ability not only as a performer but also as a playwright. Never one to stay idle for long, Barry recently founded Guerillaboss Marketing, where he serves as CEO. Barry is looking for someone who can keep up with his fast-paced lifestyle. An ideal date would begin with a beachfront brunch of mimosas and seafood, followed by laying out to tan. After heading home to grill up some steaks and cuddle up for a disco nap, you’ll be sufficiently recharged for a night of bar-hopping. Barry needs a man who can juggle his beer and shots and still own it on the dance floor. Other acceptable date options include hiking, biking, rollerblading, swimming, camping and—if you need a breather—catching a movie. As for the man himself, Barry bases his ideal mate on a specific template: “James Van Der Beek. Whatever he has going on will do just fine.” Hopefully, the two of you together will suffice, because Barry doesn't see kids in his longterm game plan. “Yes, I do believe the children are our future, but the future needs an asswhipping,” he jokes, adding, “I’d rather adopt a flying pig—they’re cleaner. I'm too selfish for children, like Oprah, George Clooney and Jennifer Aniston.”

A FEW GOOD MEN By Mike Ciriaco and Michelle McCarthy

Los Angeles has no shortage of single gay men, but with this issue we've gathered a few eligible men who are ripe for the picking—men who are genuine, sincere and successful, and who represent a diverse selection of L.A.'s dating pool. Feel free to contact these bachelors and express your interest. We may not be able to guarantee a love connection, but here's hoping we can light a spark!

This Florida-born artist lives out the belief that the experience of art should be accessible to everyone. The Parsons-trained Manny Castro has been inspired to create guerilla works, including hanging ruby slippers on power lines and installing oversized bags of 'cocaine' on telephone poles across Los Angeles. His draping of a 30-by-30-foot painting of Lady Gaga costumed as Jesus Christ exposed his work to an unsuspecting new audience and was described as “amazeballs” by Perez Hilton. Manny’s artwork is even showcased in the videos of his frequent collaborators, the music duo Karmin. Manny began his career straight out of college, creating window installations for Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, then subsequently Barney’s and Fred Segal. Since moving to Los Angeles, he’s been fortunate enough to have a number of notable models and personalities pose for him, including Milla Jovovich, Derek Blasberg, Agnes Bruckner, Amanda Lepore, Patrick McMullan, Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan. Though he currently resides in West Hollywood, Manny spends the majority of his time Downtown, painting in his loft studio. “My studio is where all the real magic happens. It’s where I play make-believe everyday and turn all my crazy ideas into reality. Usually I’m covered in paint head-to-toe. I feel very grateful and lucky to be able to say, ‘I am an artist.’” As a true Floridian, Manny lives for palm trees and soaking up the sun. When not toiling at his craft, you’ll likely find the charming young artist in Venice, bike-riding along the beach with his friends, though his primary focus is getting his artwork out to the masses. As of a week ago, Manny is as accessible as his art. The newly single artist is back on the market and looking for someone who knows that the best things in Manny Castro, life aren’t necessarily things. His ideal date involves some element of adventure and, most importantly, humor. West Hollywood “As long as we can make each other laugh, that’s all that really matters.” acecup8@gmail.com

Christian Cooper, 37 Long Beach xtianlaw@outlook.com Christian Cooper is an attorney at Public Counsel, a public interest law firm in Koreatown that assists low-income people struggling with debt. Before law school, he worked in the entertainment industry but soon realized he wanted to do something that had a more direct impact on people's lives. “As an attorney, it's often the small victories that are the most rewarding,” Christian says. “I also have my own solo consumer bankruptcy practice in Long Beach, where I often help people file a motion or other document that would be daunting to tackle on their own but which is routine for me, and makes a huge difference in their cases and in their lives.” A large percentage of Public Counsel’s clients are monolingual Spanish speakers, and Christian speaks fluent Spanish. “I get a lot of confused looks from our Spanish-speaking clients when they realize the tall white guy (‘el güero’) actually does speak Spanish.” Christian grew up in Laguna Beach, but during his junior year at USC, he spent the fall in Washington, D.C., and the spring in Seville, Spain. He also lived in San Francisco for a couple of years after law school, but “it was way too cold. I missed the sunshine.”

Now living in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach, Christian gets plenty of sun, living four blocks from the beach. “I work in L.A., but it's actually not a terrible commute,” he says. “Plus, my rent is ridiculously cheap—all my San Francisco friends hate me.” Single for about two years, Christian says he’s dated but just hasn’t found the right guy. And who would that be? Someone who shares similar interests—traveling, family, hiking, the beach. His ideal match is grounded, intellectually curious and authentic— someone he can bring home to mom and dad. Christian was diagnosed as HIV-positive 11 years ago. “Overall, I am in excellent health,” he says. “My HIV status does, of course, come up when I’m dating, and I’m always very up-front about it. If my status is going to be an issue with a guy, I want to know that up-front. I’ve dated guys who are positive as well as guys who are negative.” And what is his ideal date? “Well, I do love the beach, so I think it might start out with a late-morning brunch, then going out kayaking, then maybe a couple of beers to wind down, capped off with dinner by the beach or a barbecue,” Christian says. And if it all works out, Christian says he’s definitely open to the idea of having children. “I have two nieces (7 and 3) and love spending time with them. I think I would be a good dad.”

The Canadian-born Preston Gaspar relocated from Michigan to Los Angeles nine years ago to participate in United Talent Agency's training program. It was in the company’s mail room that this dimpled blonde formed the close-knit network of loyal friends who helped him survive the concrete maelstrom that is L.A. “I think that once you find your group of friends, Los Angeles is hands-down one of the best cities to live in,” says Preston. These friendships helped facilitate Preston's transition from talent representation to his current career in special events coordinating. This new job path has given him the opportunity to work in some of the city’s hottest venues, including Avalon, The Music Box and, most recently, the historical Belasco Theater. Preston’s position at the Belasco is not only an important stepping stone toward his ultimate goal of one day opening his own bars and restaurants, but has also motivated him to ditch the daily West Hollywood commute and move into a loft in the nearby Historical Core of Downtown Los Angeles. Not only is his new home significantly closer to work, but it also provides Preston with easy access to the trendy new hot spots that have sprung up in the neighborhood as a result of the recent DTLA renaissance. “The one thing that I have learned about Downtown, though, is never assume that it’s water in the puddles,” he jokes. Even more than supporting his professional life, Preston’s friends encourage him to explore his romantic life. Fed up with a history of picking guys who are best decried as “beautiful disasters,” one of these long-time colleagues nominated Preston, a serial bachelor, for this issue without his knowledge. “My friends tell me I have absolutely nothing to lose, so I figured why the hell not.” Be warned, potential daters—Preston isn't interested in one of those cliché dinner dates. He far prefers something outside your comfort zone—perhaps a metro trip to Old Town Pasadena or an afternoon at LACMA. Preston’s base requirements involve employment and a vehicle. “It doesn't hurt if he's easy on the eyes, too.”

A FEW GOOD MEN city that way. I love the variety in such a compact area. The city, the mountains and the desert are within an hour from each other.” If Ricky looks familiar, you might have seen him in the web series Where the Bears Are. Initially cast as an extra, his role just kept growing. “They gave me a scene where I make out with Rick Copp in the bathroom and find a supposed dead body in the Christmas special,” Ricky says. “Then I did another scene making out with him in the second season. So I guess my role was Rick’s make-out stuntman.” Ricky makes industrial art and furniture from reclaimed pieces of wood, glass and metal. You can find it available up

Of all this year’s bachelors, Chris Paldeng arguably has the most unique upbringing. He was raised with his tight-knit clan of five brothers and sisters in the Phillipines’ San Fernando, notable as the “Christmas Capital” of the country.

Chris Paldeng, 36 West Hollywood kahleevogue@yahoo.com “One of the villages is so hardcore, it celebrates Christmas 365 days a year,” he says. Three years ago, Chris relocated to Los Angeles, where he soaks up the cultural diversity as much as he soaks up the sunshine. This city provides a multitude of interesting diversions that

Mervyn Warren is a film and TV composer, record producer/arranger, songwriter/lyricist, pianist and vocalist— and if his 10 Grammy nominations and five Grammy wins are any indication, he’s damn good at what he does. “It's obviously a tremendous honor to win, and no matter how many times one wins, the feeling you get is nearly indescribable,” he says. “I was very fortunate to have been recognized in that way so early in my career—I was 24. So I felt— and still feel—very fortunate indeed.” Originally from Huntsville, Ala., Mervyn has worked with Quincy Jones, David Foster, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Celine Dion, Chicago, Queen Latifah and Rascal Flatts. But it was his work with Whitney Houston that really stands out in his mind. “To hear one of the greatest voices of all

time singing songs I had written or arranged was an experience that's nearly unparalleled. She was truly one of my favorites, and the fact that she’s now gone makes those weeks we spent together just that much more precious.” Mervyn has been single for six years and says he’s drawn to guys who are masculine, intelligent, confident, adventurous, ambitious, communicative and dependable—a man of integrity, a man of his word. Freethinkers. Politically left. Geeky can be good, too. “I love the dynamic that occurs when each is an expert in something that the other finds interesting and we learn from each other. Physically, I have a wide range of types, but one of the first things I notice is facial hair. That's pretty much a must,” he says. His kind of date would include two components—something you experi-

and down the coast of Southern California. He created an art installation of industrial spiders made from recycled large light bulbs and steel rods for Faultline, but they’ve all sold out at the bar. Now he sells them privately through Facebook.

Ricky Mungia, 28 Los Feliz greylandsrm@gmail.com As for the future, Ricky says he’s been pondering having children. “Only recently did I think of a mini version of me, so now I wouldn’t be opposed to it. If I truly felt a moment where I wanted to have children, I wouldn’t deny it.”

Chris is always eager to experience, whether it’s hiking, visiting a museum, an art show or a new bar. But he doesn't need to stray too far from his own neighborhood of West Hollywood, which provides Chris with a strong sense of safety and community. “This is a place where I can go jogging at night and still feel safe. This is a place where my neighbors always have a story to share or give me fresh tomatoes from their gardens, not to mention the smiles that greet me in the morning. Accessibility to everything is also a reason why I love this town. Gyms, supermarkets, restaurants catering to all types of cuisines are just within your reach. And work is also here, so I don’t really need a car to get around.” Chris’s primary profession is assis-

tant manager at Marco’s, one of WeHo’s most reputable bistros, but he also works as a personal trainer on the side, which fulfills more than just a need for income. “I grew up as a fat kid and have invested a lot to get my body where it is today. I think I drive inspiration by helping people get to the wellness goals that they deserve.” His goals for a partner focus on stability, as well as someone who is driven by passion. Ultimately, he’s searching not just for a potential husband but also someone with whom he can co-parent. “I think raising children is the single most important achievement anyone can have. I hope to have a child someday. It’s definitely a reason to get up every day and make the world a better place.”

years, Mervyn loves the way our different neighborhoods have unique vibes. He enjoys how you can spend time in Pasadena, Silver Lake, Venice, Hollywood, Santa Monica or Studio City and feel like you are in a different city altogether. “I'd love to have kids, but only if my partner also wants to,” he explains. “I know some single guys who’ve started families, but with my demanding career, I’d prefer to share that responsibility and privilege with a partner.”

The SoCal native has been single since February 2012 and is looking for a guy who is funny and outgoing, with a good head on his shoulders. (Hint: A date that surprises him is a good thing— anything out of the ordinary.) And if you’re looking to bump into him, we suggest hanging out in Silver Lake, where he’s a member of the East Side’s scruffy community. “The most exciting aspect is the amount of personality and laidback attitude in the community,” Ricky says. “It's very easy to meet new people. A FEW GOOD MEN

Dino Hillas, 53 West San Fernando Valley dhillas@aol.com A lot of people misjudge our cover model, Dino Hillas, perhaps because of his outward appearance. They think he’s all about bars or circuit parties. But the L.A. native says that couldn’t be further from the truth. “I love cooking and entertaining my friends in my home,” he says. “I am attracted to someone who is grounded, takes pride in his home or apartment, has direction and loves to hang anywhere. Nowhere fancy—it could be a restaurant, a quiet park or beach, the gym or even at home watching Netflix. Sometimes I like to go out and have a blast, but I tend to enjoy something just normal and easy. Above all, I am a traditionalist and a one-man guy, so if I fall in love, it is with one man.” The 53-year-old gym rat has had two 10year relationships and has been single for three years. In a mate, Dino typically looks for someone quiet, low-key, loyal and honest—and he loves when there is mutual respect in a relationship. A perfect first date for Dino would be something casual, like a trip to Ojai or Montecito for dinner on a Victorian porch, a long walk, perhaps a picnic in a quiet park, maybe on the beach somewhere secluded or even somewhere for dinner in Hollywood or on the Westside. “Typically, if there was a mutual connection, at the end there would be a long, slow kiss goodnight. ‘No tongues,’ as quoted by Madeline Kahn in Young Frankenstein,” he says with a laugh. On a more serious note, Dino survived a terminal illness that motivated him to become the body builder, fitness model and business owner he is today. Having had nothing to start with and wanting to get out of his personal hell, he put one foot in front of the other, one day at a time, rebuilding his body, his company and his life against all odds. For this reason, Dino knows that if you want something, you have to work for it, and if you want it badly enough, it will happen. Dino owns Moda Dora Gift and Home, Ltd., a 6,000-squarefoot wholesale home furnishings showroom at the L.A. Mart near Downtown. “We are a sales agency for various furniture, better gift and lighting lines. We represent and sell to the finest retail stores, discriminating interior design firms, independent designers and Hollywood celebrities,” he explains. “Over the years, our products have been seen on the big screen, numerous television shows, at the Oscars, Grammys and celebrity weddings. Most recently, I created a website, modadora.com, for the candles I design.” While Dino loves to travel (he prefers old-world to exotic beach destinations), he says he tends to stay close to home because of his devotion to Moda Dora. “I know that’s boring, but if I had a significant man in my life who wanted me to travel, I would leave my busi-

ness and take the time to enjoy our life,” he says. But being bound to the City of Angels for work is not exactly a bad thing in Dino’s eyes, since he has a lot of love for his hometown. His favorite aspects of L.A. include all the activities it provides—long bike rides along the beach strand, the diversity of Beverly Hills versus Venice Beach and day trips along the coast in his vintage Triumph TR6 to Santa Barbara, the central coast or Laguna Beach. “I love our weather and restaurants—dining on the Westside, on a side street in Venice or in our local mountains in the middle of Topanga Canyon.” One place you’re sure to find Dino is at the gym, where he spends 75 minutes doing full-body weightlifting at least five days a week. For the most part, he tries to make healthy choices, but he’s known to fall off the wagon every now and then for a bucket of KFC. “I enjoy my life—who I have become—and I’m excited about what the future will bring,” Dino says. “My dear friend Renee Strauss from Brides of Beverly Hills and I are working on a big project for next March, which I cannot say anything about. This is new and exciting and one of the wonderful things I am looking forward to in 2014!”

ELEMENTARY OUR TOP 10 FALL FASHION TRENDS By George Skinner Fashion trends can be tough to navigate. All those reckless adjectives thrown at you at once can easily leave you unsure and filled with doubt about your own taste level. Fear not. We’re here to help. Consider this a course in the fundamentals of Fall Fashion 2013. We’ve done the research and put in the

time so you can step confidently into fall, secure in the knowledge that you’re making the best possible fashion choices. That is, as long as you take our advice. If you decide to go with someone else’s—well, good luck with that.

THE STAPLE: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Wash Black denim is back. Not ‘was black 10 years ago,’ but black. Period. Black jeans, us.levi.com ($58)

THE REBOOT: No Pain, No Gain We’re leaving last year’s V-neck for its rough-around-the-edges but supremely soft cousin, the classic sweatshirt. This fall, the sweatshirt goes from gymbag staple to must-have item with a modern reinvention by Todd Snyder. Oatmeal pocket sweatshirt, toddsnyder.com ($130)

THE COLOR: A New Desert Storm What khaki was to summer, camel is to fall. Snap up goto accesories in this rich color, pair them with black, gray or navy blue and watch your luxe factor go up 50 points. Do not try a head-to-toe all-camel look, unless of course you’re intentionally channeling Talking Heads. Or you’re David Byrne. That’s different.

THE HAIRCUT: It’s All About the Quiff, Dude If you glance in the mirror and wonder what you should do with that beautiful head of hair, we’ll tell you. It’s called the “Modern Quiff.” A what, you ask? It’s a mash-up of the ‘50s pompadour and the military flattop, with a punk-rock mohawk-sampled hook. To make it modern, the top should be extra-long with the sides extra-short. Yes, this does mean more attention paid to and time spent on your appearance. Hey, you’re worth it.

THE FABRIC: Just Tweed’d Throw out your preconcieved notions of this classic texture. The Ivy League fabric goes thoroughly modern this fall in slim-fit suits with pants that break just shy of the ankle. Maybe you’re a college professor. Maybe you’re a hipster meatman at a vegan butcher shop. Who cares? We just want the name of your tailor. The Ludlow Suit, jcrew.com ($600)

THE COMEBACK: Smells Like Hipster Spirit What goes around comes around, and it’s finally happened—flannel shirts are cool again. And with those five words we just recouped our lost lesbian readership. Now, before you get too comfortable, ladies, please note that the 2013 flannel shirt is neater, trimmer and meant to be worn on the back, not tied around the waist like a background extra from Dawson’s Creek. Just sayin’. Konrad Check, usa.frenchconnection.com ($47)

THE SCENT: Woodsy— It’s Not Just for Your Car Anymore Remember back in second grade when that hunk on your mom’s paper towels made you feel all squishy inside and you just knew you’d grow up to be a lumberjack too? Just because you spend 40-plus hours per week at a desk these days doesn’t mean you have to smell like it. Revel in the freedom of an olfactory dream job and be the Brawny Man you’ve always wanted to be. Invisible Monster by Christopher Borsius is a dark, deep-green scent that’ll leave you smelling like you spent the day felling trees with an axe. cbihateperfume.com (15ml, $100)

THE ADVANCED PLACEMENT: Not for the Faint of Heart You’ve got plaid, we’ve got plaid—where’s the new, right? Not so fast there, fancy man. Fall 2013 is chock-full of heritage references, so why not the plaid suit? The trick to keeping your plaid firmly in the present (avoiding its punk past) is to look for distinctive patterns in subtle tones. You can still make a statement without resorting to being loud.

THE FAN FAVORITE: From Handler to Hotel, It’s Gotta Be A Chelsea

You can never have enough shoes—and more importantly, you can ever have enough transitional shoes, easing you from one season to the next. Fall belongs to the sleek, modern Chelsea boot, the shoe that looks equally stylish with jeans or a suit. The key to this boot’s eternal style is to never pair it with a flared leg. Pants need to sit tight, up on the leg of the boot, showing just enough of the elastic gusset to proclaim their Chelsea-ness. Emmett chelsea boot, thefryecompany.com ($278)

THE TWO-FER: Faster Than A Speeding Bullet The gray wool pant that should be a standard in every man’s work wardrobe has of late been relegated to postal workers and thrift shops. This fall, the classic gets a much-needed makeover with extra-super-slim tailoring and an above-theankle hem. Take the look from hip to hip2 by anchoring it with a chunky-soled shoe. Less Clark Kent, more Jimmy Olsen. Lean pants need sturdy shoes. Pants and shoes by Prada, neimanmarcus.com (both $780)

By Michelle McCarthy Your significant other has popped the question. Mazel! Now it’s time to plan the big event. With their breathtaking waters and lush greenery, the Hawaiian Islands are a dream destination for weddings. But which of the eight major islands should you choose? Well, there’s a saying the Hawaiians use: “Maui no ka oi,” or “Maui is the best.” And the Maui Sunseeker, The Valley Isle’s only LGBT resort, can handle your every need with a moment’s notice. “We had two beautiful women check in who lived in Spain and spoke very little English,” recalls owner Chuck Spence. “With no advance notice, they told the front desk they wanted to be married while they were checking in, but they were only staying with us for two nights. We got their paperwork done, held a beautiful ceremony on the beach, did a photo shoot, arranged flowers, got leis and a cake, then threw a reception that the other hotel guests attended that same evening. So they had their wedding on the first day and their honeymoon on the second.” The Maui Sunseeker has partnered with a gay wedding coordinator and can provide everything from a simple beach wedding to a full-on catered reception on its premises. In fact, the resort recently hosted the wedding of Gossip vocalist Beth Ditto and her partner Kristin Ogata. As for catering and flower arrangements, the Maui Sunseeker has a preferred vendor list of LGBT-owned suppliers. “We’ve selected the best providers for the price with the best product, while still focusing on keeping it ‘in the family,’” Spence says. “We coordinate a lot of beach weddings, as most couples want their pictures with Maui’s amazing ocean views as the backdrop. We have several ideal locations for receptions, such as the oceanfront penthouse and lanai, our rooftop sundeck or our yard with a beau36

tiful garden and barbecue grills handy for a fun evening reception. We can accommodate as small as four guests to as large as 80.” The Maui Sunseeker has a rich history of gay and lesbian clientele all the way back to its origin in the ’80s, but the current business model, which welcomes all adults but targets the discerning LGBT traveler, opened in 2004. Spence purchased the resort from its previous partnership in 2008. “I’ve been fortunate to be able to expand the size of the resort over the past five years,” he says. “It started as three buildings on a half-acre of land. Now we are an enclosed property of five buildings on a full acre located right on the shore in North Kihei.” You can choose from 26 guest rooms with everything from affordable standard rooms up to junior and

full suites to three penthouse suites. The majority of the rooms have ocean views, and all rooms are within steps of the beach. The resort is located on the leeward side of the island, where it only rains about four days out of the year, so there’s rarely a day the sun doesn’t shine on the Sunseeker. “One of the latest gimmicks I deplore and never will do is a thing called ‘resort fees.’ We never had ’em and never will,” Spence says. “That’s why our rooms might be a few dollars more than neighboring properties, but everything is transparent. Free Wi-Fi, free parking, free use of beach gear (towels, chairs, coolers, umbrellas) , free use of barbecue grills, a healthy saline pool, 24-hour hot tub, clothing-optional pool/hot tub area and rooftop sundeck, business center, concierge/activity desk that uses LGBTowned/friendly providers, 3-D flat-panel smart TVs, and every room has a minimum of mini-fridge, coffee pot and a microwave. All suites and above have full kitchens that are well-supplied with dishes and cookware.” Room rates range from $145 for a standard room in low season all the way up to $599 per night for the 1,000-square-foot oceanfront penthouse suite in high season. The Sunseeker also currently offers a Supreme’s Celebratory Special. If a couple books a seven-night stay for a wedding or honeymoon, they receive 10 percent off the room rates for the entire party, the newlyweds are greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne on arrival and they get two free onehour massages. Even if you aren’t getting hitched, the Sunseeker is the perfect spot to stay year round—and it’s great for singles. As a matter of fact, Maui Pride kicks off Oct. 3, and the Sunseeker has a jam-packed calendar of events planned. Book your room now. mauisunseeker.com

As Angelenos, we spend a lot of time frolicking in the sun and sand, but L.A.’s Gay & Lesbian Center offers an opportunity to do so while helping support some pretty tubular community programs. The Center serves more LGBT people than any other organization in the world, and to do that, it needs your help! The annual Beach Classic is an event unlike any other LGBT event in the country, uniting gays, lesbians and allies of all ages for a fun day of sport and socialization—and to top things off, it all takes place on one of SoCal’s most gorgeous beaches. What was once a beach volleyball tournament has become even more; this year’s participants are able to compete in three ways—a 2K swim, a 5K run and a beach volleyball tournament. Register for one or all three events online. Those competing in the 2K swim should be ready to get wet early on, as the day’s first major event begins at 8 a.m. When the whistle blows, swimmers will race from the sandy shore and begin a challenging open-water swim. Bi-athletes competing in the day’s run and swim portions will need to have running shoes and clothing ready near the 5K’s starting line, as the second major event of the day (9 a.m.) sends runners along a bike path, through a ‘sand challenge’ and onto the Marina asphalt service road along the beach. After the competitive runners get their

head start, the fun run begins. The Center has dubbed the 5K a “Retro Run,” which means you’re asked to sport your favorite vintage style, whether it’s Frankie Avalon-inspired or taken straight out of Blue Crush. Dockweiler Beach is home to a number of volleyball nets, so come 11 a.m., two concurrent tournaments will be taking place all over the beach—a round-robin recreational division and a double-elimination-bracket competitive division. In between matches, participants are able to take a break in the State Farm Chill Out Zone, grab a drink and recharge. Competitors and onlookers wishing to fundraise are able to support the Center program of their choice—from homeless youth programs, LifeWorks youth mentoring and Project SPIN (which works with LAUSD schools to change the culture inside classrooms) to much-needed senior services. If you’re planning to participate in the Beach Classic events, you’ll need to meet minimum fundraising requirements by Friday, Sept. 13, in order to participate. L.A. LOVES CLASSY TRASH In Greek mythology, Adonis personified masculine beauty. Adonis L.A., the West Coast iteration of New York's premier M4M strip club, strives to embody the demi-god's stellar reputation. Conceived by siblings Tim and Matt Iterriaga, the party has been descending upon Fubar every Wednesday night since its June 19 opening, featuring 'classy trash' from every corner of the nation. Frontiers spoke with Matt, the high priest of Adonis L.A., about this scorching-hot new night, the go-go gods in his employ and the perks of sibling rivalry. What motivated you to move Adonis to L.A.? Over the years, many of our L.A. friends had the opportunity to experience the exciting, unique and interactive format of the Adonis NYC shows and had been asking Tim repeatedly to bring the Adonis experience to L.A.

How has sibling rivalry influenced the L.A. version of Adonis? We do everything we can to support each other. This is the core foundation that has made Adonis Lounge what it is—a place and network of caring, supportive, non-judgmental, comforting friendship. Oh, and where you can get a classy and trashy lap dance! [Laughs] And just to make sure he doesn’t slack off, I did tell Tim that Adonis L.A. will be better than Adonis NYC! Who has been your most interesting dancer to perform at Adonis L.A.? We had a porn star headliner for one of the shows. He shot a porn scene earlier in the day and injected his penis too many times with some product in order to stay hard. Several hours later his unit turned black and blue and was throbbing to the point he couldn’t stand or walk, so he had to go to the hospital and get antierection injections! We hope Braden Charron is walking alright today.

By Mike Ciriaco

What's the biggest difference between an L.A. and New York audience? New York shows are more established—the patrons are more familiar with the format and expectations. The Adonis Lounge M4M strip club format is so new to L.A. that our patrons sometimes seem hesitant to actually get lap dances from the dancers. The format of the Adonis Lounge shows is not a go-go dance format, which some of the L.A. patrons are still getting to understand. I must say, though, L.A. certainly seems to be learning quickly! What does Adonis add to gay L.A.? There is nothing like Adonis Lounge in L.A.! Finally there is a place for gay men to see some of the hottest guys in the country—almost nude—where they can interact, have conversations and get private lap dances. We are proud, honored and grateful that we can bring our brand of classy trash to L.A. TheAdonisLounge.com

FALL FOR TV If you’ve never stepped foot inside The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, you’re missing out on some of L.A.’s best media-interested collections, programs and special events. Previously known as The Museum of Television & Radio, this museum-cum-think tank regularly hosts fascinating panel discussions featuring industry cast and crew, as well as TV-related exhibits you wont find anywhere else. The Paley Center’s annual weeklong celebration of the fall television season, PaleyFestPreviews: Fall TV, will take place Sept. 6-13, featuring screenings of the most highly anticipated new shows of the fall season—and more. “TV fans will not only get a first look at the new fall series, but they will have access to some of the most acclaimed and innovative actors, writers and producers working in television today as part of this ultimate TV fan festival experience,” says Paley Center for Media President and CEO Pat Mitchell. “We are looking forward to hosting the extraordinary talent behind this season’s hottest new shows.”

New fall shows that will be screened as part of the festival include the new CBS show We Are Men (to be followed by a panel discussion with Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O’Connell and Kal Penn, among others) , The CW’s The Tomorrow People, FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine (panel with Andy Samberg and other cast members) , ABC’s Trophy Wife (panel with Malin Akerman, Bradley Whitford and Marcia Gay Harden), ABC’s Back in the Game (panel with James Caan and others) and NBC’s Ironside (panel with Blair Underwood, Pablo Schreiber and others). Franz Ferdinand

REVIEWS

Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (Domino)

****

On the band’s fourth release, Right Thoughts, Rights Words, Right Action, Scottish foursome Franz Ferdinand retrenches into its addictive brand of angular pop as well as branches out into new areas. This is a win-win, especially after the disappointment of the group’s last release, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. There were duds galore on that release, but after a long break (four years) the song-craft’s back in spades. For the long-suffering fans, the first three tracks—“Right Action,” “Evil Eye” and “Love Illumination”—are the types of spiky tunes that made them beloved by post-punks of all ages. After that, the band experiments—successfully—across the remaining eight songs, all the while sneaking in a newfound lyrical and emotional maturity. “Fresh Strawberries”—with an easygoing ‘60s swagger—addresses the long, slow descent into decay and death. “Bullet” is the punkiest (and sexiest) jag they’ve recorded since the homoerotic “Michael.” And the dubby “Goodbye Lovers and Friends” imagines a kiss-off from the deceased narrator to those gathered around his coffin. “I hope you didn’t bring flowers,” Alex Kapranos sings with clipped disinterest, “I hope you didn’t write a poem.” But he’s such a smart aleck that he’s written his own eulogy. —Dan Loughry

Glasvegas

Later… When the TV Turns to Static (BMG)

****

Despite regular behind-the-scenes tumultuousness, Glasvegas has returned with its third full-length LP. If you’re familiar with the band’s output, you probably know what to expect. More gloom and doom and Glaswegian accents. After losing the band’s lead singer for five days (he was found safe) and losing a record contract, hope was all but lost for the foursome. Luckily, hardship equals inspiration in the Glasvegas camp, and this new fulllength album shows this. While not as poppy as the first two albums, this shows a growth in scope and songwriting. Lead single “I’d Rather Be Dead Than Be with You” overcomes its near-comedic spoken word ending, simply because of its incredible melody. “Youngblood” is crying to be a single and could possibly return Glasvegas to its former UK chart glory. “Magazine” and “If” hearken back to early days as well. This album is the band’s Disintegration. Intentionally difficult, huge songs are buried under layers of distortion and guitars waiting to be unearthed and appreciated. Glasvegas will probably never make an ‘easy’ record, and that’s how they want it. Good things never come easy anyway. —Dominik Rothbard

Goldfrapp Tales of Us (Mute)

Murray A. Lightburn Mass:Light (Independent)

****

*****

Goldfrapp is sometimes a case study in musical schizophrenia. For you see, the group generally falls into two camps— orchestral/acoustic and glam/ electro—many times combining the two while other times not straying from one formula. This admittedly abstract new effort falls into the former, much like the band’s astral debut and the more recent Seventh Tree. Here, each track is a person’s name, and this is an album that deserves to be heard in its entirety with no distractions or noise, because each song practically begs to waft through your consciousness unabated. These 10 tracks unfurl their own magical charms at an unhurried pace, with Allison Goldfrapp’s breathless, sumptuous voice essentially whispering enticements in your ears. The only track that barely breaks a sweat with an understated beat is “Thea,” while “Annabel” is about a girl trapped inside the body of a boy, and “Simone” tells of a woman who came home to find her daughter in bed with her own lover. Now, does this album suffer a bit from its weightless, ethereal sameness? Yes, it does. However, if you give this the repeated spins it deserves, you’ll find yourself transported to a place of tranquil ecstasy that’s quite a rarity these days. —Paul V.

Canada’s answer to Morrissey, Murray A. Lightburn, has finally taken the next step toward Morrisseydom by going out on his own. Instead of a clean break, Lightburn promises his band The Dears will be releasing new music later on in the year. While that’s wonderful news, it’s almost an embarrassment of riches. Mass:Light doesn’t stray too far from The Dears’ formula, aside from adding a bit more electronics into the mix. Lightburn’s songwriting has taken a few baby steps forward, which is to be expected. Each Dears LP has been subsequently more brilliant than the last. Album opener and lead single “Motherf*ckers” says everything you need to know about this album right off the bat. It’s funny, snarky, heartbreaking, enormous and totally Murray Lightburn. Elsewhere, Lightburn takes minimal advantage of his temporary abandonment of the Dears moniker. “A Thousand Light Years” is the most successful experiment. Nearly dance floor ready, the five-minuteplus opus packs so much energy and fun into the first half of the album, the goodwill spreads across all nine tracks. Moodier numbers like “Through Storms” and the title track shine in a completely different way. “I Believe I Believe” sounds like it could’ve been written during the No Cities Left era, but recorded with Lightburn’s new synthier sound. Easily one of the best albums of the year. —Dominik Rothbard

Natalia Kills

Neko Case

Trouble (Cherry Tree)

The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (ANTI Records)

The track listing here reads like a page from a young girl’s diary. “Most of my songs start with memories that will haunt me for a long time, and in almost every song, I’m confessing to something bad in my past,” says Natalia Kills. Much like the collage in the album’s cover art, this is indeed a pastiche of illicit partying and sexual escapades. And on her sophomore effort, pop provocateur Ms. Kills is feeling the spirit of contemporaries like Peaches, Pink and Rihanna inside these fat, slick and thick grooves. Out of the gate, “Television” creeps in on the sounds of police sirens and kicks in to high gear with an earworm melody and a hipswaying new-wave dance beat. “Rabbit Hole” is a spaced-out electro percolator, throbbing with explicit lyrics about doing it hard like a rabbit, and we ain’t talking eating carrots here, kids. She’s also capable of heartstring-tugging on languid, piano-driven ballads like “Marlboro Lights” and “Devil Don’t Fly.” Another highlight is “Daddy’s Girl,” which rides its confessional lyrics atop of a sample of Hall & Oates’ classic “Rich Girl” guitar riff. Kills’ voice is powerful, her lyrics are razor sharp, and she succeeds in lacing her pop confections with some edge and bite.

Neko Case’s sixth studio record is the most straightforward set of tunes she’s put her name on. The conundrum of her work has always been the nearly impenetrable words at the heart of her thorny, self-reflective tunes. This has never stopped me from loving her immensely. She has an enormous, cavernous voice (even before the studio trickery filters it and puts echo around it). And that protean instrument can make you forget (or foreswear) words that are basically impenetrable. The Worse Things Get doesn’t have that problem; in fact, it’s pretty damn quotable, from the complaint at the heart of “Night Still Comes” that goes “You never held me at the right angle” or her raging genderf*ck on “Man” where she spits out “I’m a man, that’s what you raised me to be.” And then again there’s that voice—the best in alt-country and any other genre you care to mention. It’s all she needs on the best tune she’s ever written, the a cappella standout “Nearly Midnight, Honolulu,” wherein Case, waiting for an airport shuttle, overhears an abusive parent berate her child, then turns the tune into a missive of emotional fortitude to that future adult’s damaged spirit.

THEATER REVIEWS RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE | 10886 Le Conte Ave., Westwood Through Sept. 22 | geffenplayhouse.com Playwright Gina Gionfriddo’s Pulitzerfinalist Rapture, Blister, Burn—an intelligent and provocative new take on the old question of whether a woman can have it all—gets a frisky L.A. staging as the cast from last year’s acclaimed offBroadway premiere moves intact to the Geffen. Some plodding plotting in Act One pays off when Gionfriddo’s imaginative multigenerational examination of feminism in the 21st century explodes with a surprising and amusing array of twists and turns after intermission. Amy Brenneman heads the cast as Catherine Croll, a 2013 version of Wendy Wasserstein’s Heidi Holland—a smart, sexy, successful academic whose outer confidence hides an inner midlife longing for intimacy. When Catherine returns

to her New England hometown to care for her ailing mother Alice (Beth Dixon), she is reunited with grad-school sweetheart Don (Lee Tergesen) and his wife Gwen (Kellie Overbey) , who was Catherine’s roommate before stealing Don many years ago. The once-brilliant Don has aged into a settled and secondrate college dean, using pot and porn as palliatives for his unrealized potential. Catherine’s return reignites his passion, and the trio ends up trying an unorthodox cure for the mutual envy the two women have for each other’s disparate lives. In a slightly contrived setup, Gwen and her family babysitter—21-year-old Avery (Virginia Kull)—end up the only two students in Catherine’s summersession seminar on the history of fem-

inism, conducted in her mother’s living room. With Alice making post-lecture martinis, the three generations of women dissect, discuss and disagree about various feminist theories. Peter DuBois’ stealthily effective direction is most successful here, keeping these potentially static scenes a hotbed of conflict and hilarity as Gionfriddo turns accepted ideas on their head, even giving Phyllis Schlafly a champagne toast. The cast is terrific, gathering steam as the play goes on. Brenneman is right in every way, and looks great; one hopes she will allow herself to have more fun as the run continues. Tergesen has the slacker down, and Overbey does wonders with a potentially unsympathetic housewife, allowing us glimmers of the

girl who stole a man from the likes of Catherine. Dixon and Kull are both spectacular, enlivening their roles with life and laughs where even Gionfriddo might not have imagined them. Alexander Dodge’s inventive set consists of multiple panels of evocative Cape Cod shingles, and the lights by Jeff Croiter and Jake DeGroot complement them with unobtrusive perfection. There was a time when a Broadway season was filled with dozens of plays about ideas—smart scripts in which characters were allowed to talk in ways television and film don’t allow. Gionfriddo’s caustic comedy (the title is borrowed from a Hole lyric) is a 2013 continuation of that tradition. Drink up, theater fans. —Christopher Cappiello

FOOL FOR LOVE T.U. STUDIOS, 10943 | Camarillo St., NoHo Through Sept. 29 | tix.com The works of veteran playwrightactor Sam Shepard (True West, The Curse of the Starving Class, A Lie of the Mind) are largely thought of as brooding portraits of severe family dysfunction in America’s heartland. His characters often face an inescapable legacy of decline and despair. Their psychological baggage leads them toward codependent relationships and physical and emotional violence. The steamy and sometimes harrowing Fool for Love (1983) packs a hefty arsenal of volatile character interactions and a veneer of surrealism into a potentially taut 80 minutes. The key focus is the complex relationship between two half-siblings—Eddie (Chad Doreck) and May (Lauren Plaxco) , who fell in love before they realized they were blood relatives, and now must gradually grapple with several startling secrets from their past as they hole up in a shabby Mojave Desert motel room. This powerful story should be familiar to some from Robert Altman’s 1985 film adaptation featuring Shepard and Kim Basinger.

Director Gloria Gifford offers an imperfect but creditable rendition of a highly challenging work. Her production captures the dark humor and crackling tension of the story while grappling with the complex byways of Shepard’s heady themes. Doreck and Plaxco convincingly convey the intensity of their characters’ love-hate relationship while imbuing these boisterous roles with admirable shadings. A pitfall in tackling these roles would be overstating the tumultuous arguments and physical skirmishes while failing to find moments of vulnerability and tenderness. Doreck’s formidable portrayal of a cowboy with a macho ethos captures a full range of emotions, moving beyond the clichés of a swaggering good-ole-boy with a short fuse, characteristics that are evident on the surface. Plaxco captures the thick-skinned exterior of a woman filled with rage and disillusionment while achieving credible transitions to illuminate May’s fears and weaknesses. Also, these two actors skillfully portray the sexual fervor called for

in some scenes. Lending strong support and providing a crucial contrast is Zach Kilian as an upbeat and polite suitor, Martin, who has come to take May on a date, as she has become weary of Eddie abandoning her for days at a time. A pushpull dynamic in Eddie and May’s toxic relationship has become commonplace. Kilian is an effective catalyst for the play’s conclusion. Less effective is Robert May as The Old Man, a ghost-like presence

who periodically rises from his chair to deliver monologues, providing surprising details about the couple’s past. It won’t take long to figure out who this mysterious presence is meant to be. Unfortunately, May’s delivery lacks nuance and characterization, shortchanging the poetry of Shepard’s language and the effectiveness of the revelations. Nonetheless, this is a generally commendable revisit to one of Shepard’s most compelling plays. —Les Spindle

“Billy shows much enthusiasm but is lacking in some areas of writing skill. He completes his written assignments very quickly and should be encouraged to take more time to strive for neatness and better penmanship.” —The assessment from my 10th grade Honors English teacher. True to form, throughout the 18 years of writing this column, I've never missed a deadline. My handwriting is still messy, but all I do is type.

Way back in August of 1995, I was asked by one of my best friends to write a column for the gay paper he worked at. It was an emergency—the person who wrote the gossip column had stolen money from the paper and simply disappeared. They were in a rush, and they were desperate—two qualities I look for in my men. Since my stand-up material was filled with celebrity gossip, I banged out a column quickly and swore it was a oneshot deal. Three columns later, I got a call from another gay paper asking if they could pick up the syndication rights. And that, dear reader, is how the Billy Masters empire was born. Back then, I had to fax in my column because most of the papers didn't have e-mail. Some didn't even have a fax machine and would make me mail them a hard copy. How times have changed. These days, the minute a reality star takes a photo of his penis, it turns up on BillyMasters.com. God bless the internet—and God bless you all. Russia's anti-gay legislation has sparked much discussion about the upcoming 2014 Olympics in Sochi. While bans and demonstrations are being considered, skater Johnny Weir has a completely different approach. He not only plans to attend and compete, he plans to be as flamboyant as ever. “If it takes me getting arrested for people to pay attention and for people to lobby against this law, then I'm willing to take it.” I'm sure Weir's willingness to “take it” will not come as a surprise to many. And that leads to the ‘big’ story of the week—Wentworth Miller coming out of the closet. This was big news to those of you who have been living under a rock since Prison Break debuted six years ago. Up until now, he's always denied being gay—most blatantly in this quote: “I'm not gay, but that rumor can't be killed. I'd

Well, you'd be wrong, because we do. Since being evicted, he's said, “I was hoping this would help me get a modeling or acting career out of this.” Well, Davey, your wish is my command. You can see every inch of Girton on BillyMasters.com—and that's quite a few inches. When I'm planning a leg cramp the next time I'm swimming in San Diego, it's definitely time to end yet another column. In what is becoming an unfortunate trend, I must take a moment to acknowledge the passing of someone who was very special to me. Many of you probably know of Damon Intrabartolo as the writer of the musical bare. He was enormously talented in so many areas, but also incredibly complex—a dear person who was also kind of a lost soul. He recently passed away at the age of 39, way too soon and far too tragic for me to even joke about. He'll be missed and not soon forgotten. While I hate being abrupt, I must wrap up not only this column but also another year. So let me quickly remind you—as I have every week for the past 18 years—that you can keep up with my comings and going at BillyMasters.com, the site that's got nothing to hide. If you've got a question, send it to Billy@Billy Masters.com and I promise to get back to you before my next anniversary. Until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's bible.

DEAREST READERS, I am sitting here in my office at Universal Studios on my lunch break and thought I should take this opportunity to write a formal apology to you all for not turning in a column last issue. You see, I am writing on the new television show Hello Ross! on E!, and it’s been crazy. This weekly pop culture fiesta stars America’s favorite gay boy next door, Ross Mathews, and premieres Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. Please watch it so I don’t have to dress up like a rodeo clown/whore and sing dirty songs to drunken sinners who have chosen The Sodomite Lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong— I will definitely still do that. I just want to do it less frequently now that I’m a card-carrying member of AARP. No joke. The card is in my wallet. Can you say “senior discount?” All joking aside (don’t you hate it when comedians say that?), the show is going to be amazing. Ross is such a sweetheart, and we essentially get paid to laugh all day. He’s going to have superfans Skyping in from all over the country and special guests—famous and otherwise—passionately discussing trending trends and scandalous scandals. But it’s all done with Ross’s signature positive spin. He loves celebrities and pop stars and reality TV and big-budget movies just as much—if not more—than you do. But this is at 10 p.m. on a Friday night, so it’s adorably adult. I think the show’s tagline sums it up best: “Hardcore Fan-on-Fan Action!” Guess who came up with that? I just ducked into Ross’s office and— between his phone interview with Entertainment Weekly and choosing what tie and pocket square he’ll be wearing for

this afternoon’s taping—I asked him a few quick questions. What one word best describes your new show? Fun! Do you have a pre-show ritual? Honestly, I just think about how grateful I am. I know it’s cheesy, but I always feel like thanking the universe. Finish this sentence: “Hello Ross, goodbye…” Underwear! What is the one thing we will never see on your show? My naked man-boobs. Who would be your ultimate ‘dream guest’? Say it with me… OPRAH! Well, I have to run. I have to help make sure the Little Monsters and the Katy-Kats don’t kill each other while waiting in the audience line. Ah, show business! Hello Ross! premieres Friday, Sept. 6, right after Fashion Police on E!

I’LL AIDS WALK L.A. WITH MY CANE Not a soul on Earth can tell you when middle age begins—not our doctors, dentists, shrinks, gynocologists or proctologists. I’m unsure what a genealogist does, but I will bet they haven’t a clue of the exact timing this moniker, science or signpost hits. But I now know it is a state of mind, quite certainly as it relates to HIV and AIDS. I can tell you the exact date it happened to me. It was a sweet, sunny Sunday morning—Oct. 12, 2012—in West Hollywood. I’d been to many AIDS Walks before, but this one was different. There were kids everywhere, and I had happily become a middle-aged, hopefully wise man. We are into over 30 years of a plague in our community, so perhaps grizzled souls like me have reached a pinnacle to reflect. A ton of us old guys yelled, protested and tossed fits. We carried signs and petitions; we were pissed at politics and politicians who simply didn’t care for us. We lived with the discomfort and fatigue of meeting our disconnected family tossed together in unimaginable, abhorrent and beastly memorials of life and death. Tearing our way through love, kindness, sorrow, comfort, conflict, friends and funerals, we attempted to build a bond. Some pulled it off. Many didn’t. We lit more candles, fashioned more memorials and created more services, lacking almost any scripture yet overflowing with more spirituality than most homes of worship had seen in years. We were screwed and scared. We were mad, and we did what people for thousands of years had done. We rose up— pissed off—and made a difference. I’m not sure when exactly, but APLA’s AIDS Walk did turn from a dirge to a celebration. In the beginning, we cried. Every 365 days, it was a memorial of a blast of memories chock-full of death. Now it is more of a commitment to defiance. We know how the virus works, and now people are congregating—to, yes, still honor, but perhaps more importantly, to remind one another—to be safe, care

about ourselves and others. So there I was last October speaking again to 30,000 souls. A dated dude who has given more eulogies than most. I have watched, prayed, blessed and cried over so many passings. Yet looking at the walkers at the opening ceremonies, I was taken by how many young folks were there. Kids, really. Gazing out at that sea of humanity, most wearing some custom-art shirt taking on HIV, it occurred to me there is a new generation of individuals fighting on their own terms, feeling no stigma around this disease because they have always known it. AIDS didn’t jump out at them like a boogeyman. They grew up aware and more diligent. Perhaps disciplined. And that implies a framework, a way to stay negative—a set of objectives that a proposed action can be measured. Shit, maybe they’ve got it. Teams from West Covina High, Pepperdine, Whittier College, USC, tons of Alpha Phis and Delta Sigmas are in for 2013. Alhambra High and Fairfax are raising cash; UCLA and even Cathedral High School will be there come October. Today the kids of AIDS Walk L.A. raising cash for APLA deliver and feed off one another’s energy. Us old crows might just take this new force as our guardians. Our new liberators. These are the future in school that see, feel, like and love while fighting over sick and lost souls with a vexation of charge and change with absolutely no stigma about our plague. I’m fine to fight for 30 more years. I’m so thrilled to be middle-aged in this war, because I believe with this new and inspired spirit and responsibility, it might end. We can’t shag off. Fresh-faced reinforcements just arrived. Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, is the day for you to declare your age, rage and commitment to people in need. These spirits—this new army—are doing it, so don’t be lazy. Sponsor a kid or a team, or just walk with me. It’s easy now. I’m middle-aged. aidswalk.net/losangeles

Queersay QUEERSAY BY GOSSIP GAY Lesbian Delay Back in May, I published a piece on a lesbian Oscar nominee who was a very eager beaver to come out of her proverbial closet. Of course, she wasn't doing it Wentworth Miller-style so that she could inspire social change, but rather to garner funding for her upcoming lesbian-enthused ‘based on a true story’ film. Well, since publication, my Facebook and email have lit up with your guesses aplenty as to whom this damsel in sexual distress may be—Tilda Swinson? Sandra Bullock? Ellen Page? Queen Latifah? Avril Lavigne? Kathy Bates? Hota Kotb? My personal favorite, Anne Heche—again?! All good guesses, and I cannot confirm nor deny if these (or any other of the could-be queers you emailed into me) are true. I did promise you, however, that the big reveal would be (literally) coming out sometime this summer. But now here I stand with my tail between my legs, telling you that the grand, pre-planned un-closeting has been delayed to “sometime later in the year.” Our in-the-know managerial insider tells us: “First, the film is going nowhere. We were [in talks with Meryl] Streep and we got crickets. If you don't get Streep, then who the f*ck is going to throw in their millions, you know? Then she [the closeted lesbian celeb in question] gets all idiot and starts posting photos of herself with this guy on Twitter! She starts these rumors that they're together and perhaps engaged. That completely undermines her coming out, and you know how lesbians get when they feel undermined! And finally, this bitch has informed us that she wants to spend the fall in India finding herself or whatDrop me your at dirty little secrets m. .co queersay@hotmail r give I neve And don't worry, oat! up my deep thr y, go to For more Queersa eersay. ever the f*ck that means! Who knows what's going on anymore, but she has been insane ever since she dated that chick that dated Angelina Jolie. Oh— allegedly, of course.” So there you have it, folks. A closeted power-hungry Hollywood lesbian with money and a self-Tweeting fetish is being difficult. If that ain't earth-shattering news, I don't know what is! But keep your guesses coming to QueerSay@hotmail.com. I promise all will be revealed in due LGBTQ time! Old Dog Outrage Last week, I published a blind-item feature about the all-gay-all-the-time web series Old Dogs, New Tricks, and y’all responded in droves, including a “friend of a friend” of the diva actor who refuses to return to the set because (allegedly) he can't get any of the onset hunks to give him their man meat. Well, this friend of a friend tells us that we have a lot of the story right, but also some of the facts wrong. As she so eloquently (and by eloquently, I mean bizarrely) puts it: “There is one ‘fact’ that just doesn't jive. I cannot talk about it unless [the actor] were to say it’s OK. But I can give you an example of what I mean. If you wrote ‘The actor likes kitty cats and the actor is from Amsterdam,’ you'd only be half correct. You can see where two characters have been mixed together, can't you?” Actually, Ms. Crazy Cat Lady, no I cannot. I have absolutely no idea what you are saying, and—frankly—I am terrified to investigate further. We reached out to the long-gone actor's ‘representation’ for comment and he tells us that the actor will “eventually” make a statement but is hoping for a “bigger venue” than my “paltry column.” Honey, Oprah is busy with LiLo, and Bravo is jam-packed with crazy housewives. Your client is D-list at best, and I rescind my offer. Like the actor's alleged career, this story is dead in the Hollywood doldrums. SEPTEMBER 17, 2013

DRIVE By Steve Siler

2013 Bentley Continental GT V-8: What to Drive if You’re Rich and Single For our Most Eligible Bachelors issue, we thought about the ultimate, moneyis-no-object first-date sled. A Ferrari would be fun, though a tad obnoxious for a first date. A Rolls-Royce would bring all the spoils, but are we going to a formal here? Hope not. A Bentley Continental GT? Now we’re talking. I recently got a chance to sample Bentley’s newest Continental GT coupe model, equipped with its splendid new turbocharged V8, and found myself thinking that if a guy came and picked me up in one of these, it could be Mr. Right or Mr. Wrong and it would be awfully hard to tell the difference. Appropriately Intimate First, the Continental’s tidy, two-door, four-chair package is as much car as any bachelor really needs, even if he has more money than Bill Gates. It’s got presence, but not too much, with a seductive design that starts with a broad—dare I say phallic—front end sweeping into pontoon-style fenders. My personal

favorite element is the pillarless window treatment that creates one unbroken opening when all windows are lowered. The cabin is decidedly intimate space for the driver and his chosen passenger, with somewhat smaller seats to occasionally seat two friends behind them. Its low roof and slim windows are all the better for a discreet after-dinner makeout session—but there is nowhere near enough room to get it on in back. Remember, this is a date car, not a hotel room. Invite him inside for further shenanigans if you have any class. The Exact Opposite of Pretentious It should go without saying that Bentleys are authentic, or put another way, what you see if what you get. What looks like engine-turned aluminum is engine-

turned aluminum. What looks like leather is exactly that (and of the very softest kind). And if it looks like hand-rubbed wood, well, don’t get me started on the hand-rubbed wood. Suffice it to say, if authenticity is an admirable trait in a man, the Continental GT is very flattering indeed. A Little Bit Eccentric Hand-built by career craftsmen and women in Crewe, England, every Bentley has a human-ness that is hard to describe but easy to feel. For example, the minute variations in the stitching on the steering wheel and dashboard, as well as the gathers in the leather here and there show that a person—not a machine— does the hard work here. It is fabulous. If there are any flies in the ointment, the biggest would be the infotainment/

navigation system, with its dated-feeling, sometimes confusing interface and delayed responses. Hopefully our dream bachelor will be more fluent in the operation of these controls than I was able to become in my short three days with it. Also, for $200K, I would like to see a radar cruise control and the availability of a sunroof. There is a convertible version, I suppose, but it’s not quite as pretty. A Turn-On When Turned On As lovely as it is to behold, the Continental GT V-8 is even more alluring once you turn it on. Bentley’s new 500hp V8 has deep reserves of turbocharged power and sounds absolutely intoxicating. Its breathtaking acceleration is made possible thanks to an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel grip. How fast is it? From a stop, 60 mph flies by in about 4.5 seconds, and if there’s enough space and a flat, straight road ahead, 185 mph is theoretically possible, though a wise bachelor won’t show you that on a first date, since first kisses aren’t cute behind bars. Still Made of Unobtanium The Continental GT V8’s $178,425 base price makes it the cheapest car Bentley builds, but, uh, it is certainly no bargain. And honestly, the dream date we’ve been discussing here is bound to remain exactly that for pretty much everyone reading this (myself included). But trust me, any actual eligible bachelor lucky enough to drive one of these may not be eligible for long.

2013 COMMUNITY STUDY REPORT GETS FIRST-PLACE HONORS

WEHO TO UNVEIL ‘LOVE YOUR BEAN’ ART EXHIBIT BY PAULO MURILLO The city of West Hollywood has spilled the beans. WeHo’s Art on the Outside program is set to debut Love Your Bean—a new art installation from renowned artist Cosimo Cavallaro. Three shiny, large-scale (approximately 5’ x 5’ x 10’) and brightly colored sculptures in the shape of the beloved jelly bean are scheduled to go on display on San Vicente Boulevard in front of the Pacific Design Center on the West Hollywood Park lawn. There will be an opening reception for Love Your Bean on Thursday, Sept. 5, 5:30-7 p.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Cavallaro worked alongside Southern California fabricator Jack Brogan over the course of a year. A jelly bean sculpture was cut out of Precision Board Plus with a chainsaw and then sanded down with 36 grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. A 2-part mold was made out of fiberglass to create

two more replicas. The molds were joined together and painted with vibrant acrylic paints for a beautiful jelly bean finish. “I’m happy,” Cavallaro told Frontiers when the beans were first being installed at the park. “This was nine months of labor—it’s a boy!” He added. “Somebody said that it makes her smile. This is just a gesture of love. There is no anger, there is no political message. It’s just about peace and love. It is about beauty and happiness.” Art on the Outside is a program of the City of West Hollywood’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission that brings art out into the public realm to enhance the city’s lively pedestrianfriendly culture. For more on Cosimo Cavallaro’s art, visit his website at CosimoCavallaro.com. For more on WeHo’s Love Your Bean exhibit, visit weho.org/art or call Andrew Campbell at (323) 848-6883.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE NEW JELLY BEANS AT WEHO PARK? “I think this is an excellent addition to the Pacific Design Center. The colors almost match, and this just seems like a wonderful, wonderful thing. I was walking by and they immediately caught my eye. I love them. I think this art installation is just great.” —Dennis Lettau

“I love it. I love art. I think it’s a very necessary part of our lives. It’s a great way for people to express themselves, much like dancing, or any other creative endeavor— plus it exposes you and your children to cool things to look at. And I love jelly beans, but I don’t personally eat them because they get stuck to my teeth.” —Athena Clevenger

West Hollywood’s 2013 Community Study recently won top honors for Project of the Year from the International Association of Public Participation, an organization seeking to promote the values and best practices associated with involving the public in government and industry decisions that affect their lives. The community study was designed to update the city’s demographics and to inform the funding priorities for more than $4.2 million of social service contracts from the city’s general fund. WeHo’s 2013 Community Study is now available to the public as a hard copy and online. The report reflects the fact that most of WeHo’s diverse residents rate their quality of life as excellent or good, and they highly value the city’s exceptional social services. “The 2013 community study was one of our most intensive community engagement projects to date,” Mayor Abbe Land stated in a press release. “This large-scale needs assessment helps us ensure that we are keeping our commitment to truly serving the diversity of our entire community.” WeHo’s 2013 Community Study report contains some new features from the last study, which was conducted in 2006. To view the complete results, visit weho.org, e-mail communitystudy@weho.org, or call (323) 848-6510.

SPEAK OUT “The colors are nice, but it's really hard to interpret someone else's art. I mostly wonder why the city chose to display jelly beans at the end of summer. This is the type of art that makes more sense in the spring time. They make me think of Easter.” —John Haigh

ORANGE COUNTY

HAUNTED HOMOBOWL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER BY GREG HERNANDEZ The biggest annual fundraiser for The Center Orange County in recent years has been its classy Indigo Ball, held each spring and which this year raised $250,000. But what do you think is the second-biggest annual fundraiser for The Center? Here's a hint: it involves 10 pins and a heavy ball. That's right, it's a bowling event. But not just any bowling event. It's the Haunted Homobowl, where hurling a bowling ball down a lane and trying to hit some pins is just part of the fun. You also get to wear the outlandish Halloween costume of your choice while doing it. The Haunted Homobowl doesn't take place until Friday, Oct. 25, but has become such a hot ticket that it sells out pretty quickly. This year’s event is expected to raise at least $30,000. “Everyone says this is the most fun event of the year for us. The Halloween costumes always make it pretty interesting,” says Kaeli Benvenuto, the Center's development manager. “This started out as a fun event put together by volunteers, but in the past five years it has grown and become more formalized.” The event takes place at 300 Anaheim, located in the Anaheim Garden Walk. On its Facebook page, the venue describes itself as “anything but your grandfather's bowling alley.” It features state-of-the-art lanes, floor-to-ceiling video screens and lane-side food and drink service. “It's a cool bowling alley with a very clubby atmosphere; not your typical bowling alley—it's a little bit sexier,” 58

FRONTIERSLA.COM

Benvenuto says. “It is definitely not a hard sell; it's very casual. People dress up, but it's dress-up in a fun way. There's a lot of socializing with people you might not see at some of the other Orange County events.” “The bowling is almost like a secondary thing,” she adds. “No one is bowling like they are in a league and have to get that perfect 300 score. We haven't had to put bumpers up for anyone yet, but that's not to say we couldn't do it. It's a fun excuse to get together.” About 225 people can be accommodated. With a limited number of lanes, teams can be expanded from six to 10 members to give more people a chance to participate. The increase in participants at $65 per individual ticket (group rates and VIP lanes can also be purchased) is one way the event has increased its fundraising. But there is also an added feature this year—a bowl-a-thon, which works in the same way as various walk-a-thons do with participants getting sponsors to help them raise money. Prizes will be given to the top fundraising teams and individuals. The event will also feature a silent auction with such items as weekend getaways and spa packages up for bid. The Haunted Homobowl will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. 300 Anaheim is located at 321 West Katella Avenue in Anaheim. BEACH

HISTORIC RAINBOW FLAG TO BE RETIRED, DONATED TO HISTORICAL SOCIETY BY GREG HERNANDEZ Each year during the Long Beach Pride Parade, one of the more dramatic sights is when 80 volunteers make their way down Ocean Boulevard carrying a giant Pride Flag. It is made of heavyweight nylon fabric, measures 30 by 80 feet and can hold all kinds of money, which parade watchers are encouraged to toss onto the flag as it makes its way past. Since making its debut in the 2000 parade, the flag has raised more than $65,000 for the AIDS Food Store of Long Beach, and more than 800 people have helped carry it over the years. It comes in two pieces and takes a team of eight people to assemble. Now that flag is part of history. The Food Store has donated the flag to the Historical Society of Long Beach's LGBT History Project and will debut a new and more modern flag at next year's Pride Parade. It was in 2000 that the Pride flag made its first appearance in the Long Beach parade. It was the idea of Michael Cole, pastor at Christ Chapel, who wanted the community to be aware of the ongoing needs of AIDS patients and to collect donations to support the Food Store. Those first few years, the flag was borrowed from a San Francisco man for the parade because there were no commercial manufacturers of a Pride flag of that size at that time. But in 2003, the AIDS Food Store and Christ Chapel was able to buy a giant flag made by a woman from the Russian River area of California. In late August, representatives from the Food Store and the Historical Society

got together for a formal handing over of the flag during an event at The Center Long Beach. “For as long as I can remember, the sight of that giant flag in the Pride parade reminded me of the challenges those with AIDS face in our community,” says Ron Sylvester, The Center's president and chairman. “We at The Center were honored to bring together the AIDS Food Store and The Historical Society of Long Beach to help preserve such a significant symbol of our past.” The flag will soon become a part of the Historical Society's Coming Out in Long Beach: An Exhibit of the LGBT History Project, which was unveiled last February at an event featuring special guest Melissa Etheridge, a former resident of Long Beach. The exhibit features photographs and newspapers, buttons, pins and fliers dating back many decades and has an interactive timeline that documents the contributions and milestones of the city's LGBT community. Among the biggest contributors to the collection are The Center Long Beach, Long Beach Pride and the Lambda Democratic Club. “We are currently looking for ways to incorporate half the flag in the current exhibit, which will be up until March 2014,” says Julie Bartolotto, Executive Director of Historical Society of Long Beach.” The other half of the flag has already been archived in the vault for safe keeping.” The Historical Society of Long Beach Gallery is located at 4260 Atlantic Avenue. CINEMA DIVERSE CELEBRATES SIX YEARS OF LGBT FILM BY JAMES F. MILLS The Palm Springs International Film Festival, held every January, is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. But Cinema Diverse is doing its part to put Palm Springs on the LGBT film festival map. Now in its sixth year, Cinema Diverse offers 25 feature films and 35 shorts playing over four days, Sept. 19-22, at the Camelot Theatres, 2300 E. Baristo Road. “This has been a banner year for LGBT films, and we’ve got some of the best,” reports Michael C. Green, the managing director of the Palm Springs Cultural Center, the nonprofit that puts on Cinema Diverse. “It’s going to be a packed four days, but we’ve got a lot of great films.” The festival kicks off with a screening of Southern Baptist Sissies, the latest from writer/director Del Shores. “Del is the man who did Sordid Lives, which played for two years at the Camelot,” said Green. “People in Palm Springs will be anxious to see his latest film. He adapted it from his play. Del and a lot of the cast will be here for the screening and afterparty.” Another treat is a screening of a work-in progress, Disturber of the Peace, a documentary about civil rights activist and gay priest Malcolm Boyd. “The film’s not finished yet, but the

60

FRONTIERSLA.COM

screening is going to be special because Malcolm and his husband, Mark Thompson, are coming to do a Q&A,” said Green. “Malcolm is 90 years old. He and Mark have been together for 30 years and they got married earlier this summer.” This year, shorts will accompany each of the feature films, and Cinema Diverse will have two programs made up exclusively of shorts. “We’ve got a number of shorts that are in the 20-30-minute range. Most film festivals won’t take shorts that are any longer than 20 minutes, but we do,” said Green. “So it’s an opportunity to take in longer shorts you won’t see anyplace else.” An all-access pass to every film in the festival is $169 (including the opening night reception) or $149 (excluding opening night reception). They also have a six-film pass for $69. Tickets for individual movies are $13. Highlights include: Southern Baptist Sissies – A comedic drama about four teenage choirboys struggling to reconcile their homosexuality with the Southern Baptist Church’s fiercely anti-gay teaching. Written and directed by Del Shores. (Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.)

NEW CLOTHING BOUTIQUE TO OPEN AT LA JOYA INN GAY RESORT BY JAMES F. MILLS A new clothing boutique is opening in Palm Springs this month, but it’s not going to be in one of the usual places. The new ES Collection Palm Springs isn’t opening Downtown or in one the area’s many shopping centers. It’s opening at one of the city’s gay resorts. Selling high-end swimwear, underwear and activewear, the ES Collection Palm Springs will open in the La Joya Inn—a 32-room resort located at 545 Warms Sands Drive. La Joya Inn is the new name for the refurbished Inn Exile. Construction on the new boutique is already underway in the space formerly occupied by a pizza parlor. “The ES Collection is a premium collection that’s very popular in Europe,” reports Nir Zilberman, the U.S. agent for the collection. “It’s a very sensual line. About 85 percent of our customers are gay, so we thought opening at a gay resort was the best way to let gays see the collection.” Made with Italian fabric and sewn in Barcelona, the ES Collection is an old name that was relaunched in 2009 in Spain. While a handful of American boutiques already sell ES Collection clothing, the company just opened their flagship showroom at 8915 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood in the old L.A. Jock store beside the Rage nightclub. “Palm Springs is the perfect place for us to expand,” says Zilberman. “We want to be where the gay community is, since that’s our primary market. We know if we get the gay community to love 64

FRONTIERSLA.COM

us, the straight market will follow.” While the ES Collection carries a high price tag—some swimsuits go for $100 or higher, while some underwear goes for $50 or higher —Zilberman says it’s worth it because the quality is so high. “When you wear the ES Collection, it’s like wearing Prada,” says Zilberman. “We brought Prada to the gay market with a lower price point than Prada.” The company also has a mid-levelpriced collection called Addicted, which is made from Portuguese fabric but still sewn in Barcelona. “Between the ES Collection and Addicted, we carry some of the bestlooking swimwear and underwear,” says Zilberman. “It’s very masculine, but also sensual.” Many of the underwear and swimwear styles come with a removable molded pouch in the crotch area. Even if you don’t have a perfectly chiseled body, Zilberman says the ES Collection and Addicted are for you. “ES Collection and Addicted look good for skinny or overweight people,” reports Zilberman. “You can be a twink and look amazing because it will lift your butt. And at the same time you can be an XL or XXL and you’ll be fully covered.” Look for the ES Collection Palm Springs to hold a celebrity-filled grand opening party and fashion show later this fall. escollection.es/webs/usa/

PRISSY GAYS When did high-maintenance become high fashion? In the gay world it seems that more and more men say they ‘need’ luxury accommodations just to feel comfortable and they are wearing their increasing delicacy on their sleeves like a pink Prada purse.

Dr. Greg Cason is a licensed psychologist based in West Hollywood, specializing in cognitive therapy with individuals and couples. He can be contacted by going to DrGreg.com.

I keep hearing statements from marginal friends and arms-length acquaintances saying things like, “First class was sold out and I had to fly coach!” or “This town doesn’t have a Four Seasons!” or “I don't wait in lines, I do them.” OK, as a psychologist, I get it. When people make mountains out of molehills, it is because there is something else underneath it. Maybe they feel deeply insecure and need external validation for their worth. Maybe they have a mild form of autism. Whatever it is, it’s not attractive. These gays just seem prissy. Prissy gays must have everything their way. They demand the ‘best’—and by best they usually mean the most expensive or the latest trend. They must drive a premium car model. They must eat at hot-spot restaurants. They must wear shoes without socks. They must have clear skin and shaved balls. I, for one, have always prided myself on being able to flex to any situation. I will fly coach, wait in a Disneyland-sized line and top it off with a Never-Ending Pasta Bowl from Olive Garden—sort of a premium guy who runs on regular gas. Then I went camping. Now, I had gone camping many times as a child. I went with my family, with friends’ families, with my school and with the scouts. When I was young, it seemed like everyone wanted to pitch a tent. I can tell war stories, like the time I played dead as a bear sniffed my ear (really). Or floating down a river on a raft for hours (fun). Or the

frequent games of strip poker during the scouting trips (really fun). Fast-forward 30 years or so to me and my packed SUV, off to a campsite in Kings Canyon National Park. This was going to be a cinch. After what seemed like an endless trip up a mountain after a long journey from L.A., we arrive at our campsite just as the sun was setting out on the horizon. I was desperately in need of a cold cocktail and a hot meal, but that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. What we arrived to was a barren patch of dirt and a fire pit. There wasn’t a meal or a cocktail on the agenda until we got our ‘housing’ situated, and by housing, I mean we had to find the flattest dirt and pitch the tent—not easy to do in the dark of night. Then came time to blow up the air mattresses. Two mattresses. Two holes. One hard ground to sleep on. Thank goodness for the Lucky Charms dinner, and the one thing I didn’t get to have on camping trips as a kid—margaritas. Ah! Good drinks, great people and a roaring campfire. This suddenly wasn’t so bad. But after a sleepless night on a gravel mattress pad and several trips to the nearby tree, I emerged the next morning looking like a chipmunk did my hair and felt like there was moss growing on my teeth. Little did I know this was the best I would feel all day. That morning was spent sharing duties making breakfast on a Coleman stove and taking trips to the unlit latrine to see if a stall was finally available. We hiked—or, rather, the women all power-walked and the guys slowly shuffled. Then we drove down the hill to the store to buy firewood and a comb.

By the afternoon I was covered in soot and needed a Silkwood-style shower. Stat! The only problem was that the showers were a mile away; you had to wait in line for 30 minutes and then insert 12 quarters. Then it dawned on me—I wasn’t as flexible as I once fancied myself. Staying at a campsite with nearby facilities and a cooler full of ice and margarita fixins is really the height of comfort for most seasoned campers. Even so, I was miserable. This really made me wonder—had I become a prissy gay too?! OK, maybe I can stomach cramped coach seats, uncomfortable Comfort Inns and waiting my turn, but was that where it stopped? Could I survive on less? All the judgment and scorn I had for these delicate flowers who insist on high thread counts and low-carb desserts was now squarely on me. Being miserable in essentially ideal camping conditions taught me a lesson: It’s all relative. Ah, good, lesson learned. Now, I know we live in America and most of us are used to a little better than just “three hots and a cot,” but the next time you find yourself complaining about your conditions, you need to ask yourself, Why am I being so prissy? Am I in the woods or just imagining that I am? Come on. No one needs first class, a Four Seasons Hotel or a bidet. You do need food, shelter and a place to relieve yourself. While the niceties are nice to have, you don’t really need them to survive. What you may be missing are good drinks, great people and a roaring campfire. That is true luxury.

PROFILE L.A. PHILHARMONIC: CELEBRATING A DECADE, LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE BY FRONTIERS STAFF As the Los Angeles Philharmonic kicks off its 95th season, it will do so with decided reverence for its past and steely resolution regarding its future. Over the course of the 2013/2014 season, the L.A. Phil will mark the 10th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Concert Hall with a series of events and special performances scaled to match not only the gravity of the occasion, but also the significant impact that both the venue and the Philharmonic have had and continue to have on the Los Angeles community. A month-long celebration will begin in earnest on Monday, Sept. 30, with a highly anticipated opening night gala featuring Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and an installation by video artist and director Netia Jones. “The 10th birthday of Walt Disney Concert Hall is a wonderful reason for our great city of Los Angeles to celebrate,” Dudamel said via a press release. “Our friend and colleague, Frank Gehry, lovingly built this world-renowned masterpiece as a living room for the people, and we get to share it with you through our music-making. This season, I am excited by all of our musical offerings, from the works that inspired me to become a musician to the numerous commissions and premieres that have become a trademark of the L.A. Phil. An additional delight for me is to have my two musical families—the L.A. Phil and the Simón Bol’var Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela—working together once again, this time with Tchaikovsky.” The collaboration of the L.A. Phil and the Simón Bol’var Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela is but one of the spectacular highlights of the season ahead. In total, the 2013/2014 season will see a record number of commissions and premieres—13 commissions, 11 world premieres, four U.S. premieres and four West Coast premieres—from the L.A. Phil. SEX ED

PENILE PINNACLE BY JIM LARKINS In the past, conventional wisdom has proclaimed that guys reach their sexual peak at about 18 years of age. This brought about an undeniable irony that one realizes his erotic zenith before ever really knowing what to do behind the bedroom door. It is true that the testicles of young men at around 18 are busy producing the most sex-accelerating testosterone they ever will. And along with this, according to Ava Cadell, Ph.D., a Los Angeles sexologist and founder of LoveologyUniversity.com, research shows that men who have just crossed the ‘barely legal’ threshold have the firmest erections and are the best equipped to rise to the occasion for repeat bouts between the sheets. But to say that we reach that sexual Superman stage before we’re even old enough to order our first Sex on the Beach cocktail is to fuel an already popular myth. In fact, the spike in sexual energy that a guy experiences while still in his teens is just the ignition for a longterm physiological process. It takes at least 10 years after your initial peak output to reach your max testosterone levels. This translates to the average guy’s libido not actually spiking until he’s around 30 years old. In fact, a recent survey involving 12,000 people found that while women have the best sex of their lives at 28, men are enjoying their sexual highs at age 33. 76

FRONTIERS4MEN.COM

Also, according to Cadell, contrary to the sexual summit that women go through, which is largely psychological, men experience more of a physiological peak below the belt. But it’s important to note that sexual peaks—whether they’re based on satisfaction or performance—can vary widely from person to person. Genetics, relationship quality and psychological factors can mean the difference between reaching sexual nirvana at any age. “The easiest way to reach your sexual peak, regardless of age, is to invest in your health outside the bedroom,” Cadell claims. “Diet and exercise can go a surprisingly long way to improving your sex life.” This should come as no surprise to anyone who has reached the midlife stage, works out regularly and still feels as sexually vigorous as ever. That’s because a good cardio program can increase testosterone levels, cut stress and promote healthy blood flow to that most necessary of appendages, the penis. Remembering that the bed is for more than just ‘getting it on’ can also make for far greater sex. A study published in Brain Research revealed that logging enough sleep can help maintain testosterone levels and keep one’s sex life in full gear. This is abundantly clear to anyone who has burnt the proverbial duel-ended candle and then failed to rise to the (sexual) occasion.
