Dear Traveler, I am excited to return to Campeche, Mexico. Last April, I did a quick two day exploratory trip at the conclusion of the Ascension Bay Permit Tournament. I found not only great baby tarpon fishing, but a vibrant city that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the high number of historic landmarks within the city limits. Both anglers and non-anglers will enjoy the wonderful cuisine, historic architecture, lively streets and waterfront boardwalk of the city. Founded in 1540, the city was named San Francisco de Campeche by the Spanish. As one of the most important seaports of its time and due to constant attacks by pirates, the Spanish built a fortified wall around the city, which most of it still stands today. Located within walls is Old Town Campeche — known for its colorful building fronts, cathedrals, museums, coffee houses and excellent restaurants. The fishing program at Campeche Tarpon Bay was founded by Miguel Encalada who has since brought on a partner, Jorge Azar. Arriving directly into Campeche or Merida, your home for the trip is the Ocean View Hotel, located on the waterfront with easy access to many fine restaurants and Old Town Campeche. The fishing is centered around the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve, a baby tarpon and snook breeding area with mangroves lining the lagoons, rivers and coastline of the open water bay. Fishing a 7 to 9 weight fly rods, hold on as the 5 to 30 pound tarpon often put on an aerobatic display trying to dislodge your fly. An occasional snook will make an appearance or you can go off the board and fish for the feisty and toothy barracuda. There is something truly special about Campeche, a city of statues and historical monuments. A beautiful, clean and safe city with friendly people, amazing architecture, great restaurants, fantastic sunsets, and most of all, great tarpon fishing. Sincerely,
Bob Artzberger Saltwater Senior Program Manager
What to Expect • Professionally guided fishing for baby tarpon, snook and barracuda in Campeche, Mexico. • The trip is excellent for non-fishing companions as the anglers return to the dock around 2:30, leaving the balance of the day for strolling the boardwalk , strolling the historic streets of Old Town Campeche before heading for a wonderful dinner. • The Ocean View Hotel is strategically located on the city’s Seafront Boulevard, only five minutes from the Historical Center, restaurants & shops, 15 minutes from the airport, two minutes from the Convention Center, and a short 15 minute drive from the airport.
About the Lodge
Campeche and the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve have quietly earned the reputation as a world-class baby tarpon fishery. The reserve is an ecologically diverse mix of grass-covered flats, mangrove lined rivers and open water bays. Located on the western shore of the Yucatan Peninsula, Campeche was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 due to the large number of historic landmarks; home to wonderful architecture, excellent restaurants and the friendly local atmosphere. Campeche, a great place for fishing and non-fishing alike.
