IT would be hard to find a premier saltwater destination that is easier to access than Turneffe Flats Lodge. Guests arrive in Belize City and are transferred to the Radisson Hotel to enjoy a drink and light lunch until the weekly transfer boat, a 48-foot Sportfisher, leaves the dock. Once at the lodge guests settle into very modern cabanas and fishing starts the next day. And if you can’t wait, there is a wadeable flat out front where you can wet a line and work out the kinks. TFL is a dream come true with lots of angling opportunities for bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, etc., but also a variety of activities for the non-anglers.
Non-anglers can enjoy snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or reading and relaxing at the infinity pool and lounging deck. Or perhaps they can take a Belizean cooking class with one of the cooks in the kitchen, do an introduction to diving course, or enjoy listening to Head Atoll Adventure Guide, Abel Coe, a Kekchi Mayan, explain the history of the Mayan in Belize. On Wednesdays, guests can arrange to visit a Mayan site or the Belize Zoo. There is lots to do!
Bonefish and permit are the primary targets at Turneffe Flats with expansive flats for wading and plenty of opportunities for larger bonefish. Permit may be found on the flats and bars throughout the atoll and anglers wade or fish from a skiff. Tarpon inhabit the creeks, channels and lagoons of the atoll and come in all sizes. Anglers enjoy fishing from comfortable 16-foot Dolphin Superskiffs custom built in the US. and browns just waiting for a beetle or grasshopper to land on the willow lined freestone-like glides and wandering meadow braids.
Longtime Frontiers trip host and photographer, Barry Beck, travels far and wide to follow his love for fly fishing, nature photography and adventure travel. Based in Pennsylvania, Barry is a professional photographer, writer, fly-fishing travel and African photo safaris host while also operating his own stock photography business. Barry is well-known in the fly-fishing, photography, and travel industries, and possesses a stellar reputation for his skill, knowledge, and expertise born from a lifetime of related experiences.
Barry’s wife and soulmate Cathy passed away recently, however Barry is continuing to share his and Cathy's love for fly-fishing, photography, travel, nature and the outdoors.
Craig and Karen Hayes started TFL more than three decades ago, and no one knows this atoll and the saltwater lodge business better than these two remarkable people. It’s not only being exceptional lodge owners that sets them apart from most, but also their stewardship and love for the island. They are instrumental in promoting the sustainable use of Turneffe Atoll and coastal marine environments, working hard to establish the Turneffe Atoll Trust to ensure environmental laws of Belize are enforced; working together the commercial fishermen and ecotourism can preserve this ecosystem for future generations.
I am excited to be hosting a week at TFL, and I hope you can join me.
Sincerely,
