CARRIE SAUNDERS Head Coach 6th Season
Carrie Saunders enters her sixth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State women’s basketball team in 2019-20. In 2018-19, Saunders led the Bobcats to their most successful season in a decade. Frostburg posted a 15-11 overall record, its top mark in the nine-year CAC era. The campaign was capped with appearances in both the CAC Tournament and ECAC Tournament. The Bobcats posted their first win over CAC foe Mary Washington since 2003 and defeated York (Pa.) for the first time since 2015. The Bobcats posted a 9-3 record at Bobcat Arena, including a 72-67 victory over first-place Southern Virginia. Under Saunders’ direction in 2018-19, Victoria Diggs scored her 1,000th point and set FSU’s career record for three-pointers made (186). The duo of Diggs and Amanda Emory each garnered 2018-19 All-CAC honors. Diggs was named to the first team for the second-consecutive season and Emory was named to the second team. During the 2017-18 season, Saunders led the Bobcats to their first Jim Crawley Tournament title in a decade with an overtime win over Rutgers-Camden. Despite a slew of injuries and illness, the Bobcats clawed their way to the CAC Tournament for the secondconsecutive season. It marked the first time that Frostburg women’s basketball reached postseason play in consecutive seasons since 2011. Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs led the conference in scoring at 15.6 points per game and was awarded First Team All-CAC honors. She also led the conference and posted the sixth-best free-throw percentage (87.7%) in league history. In 2017-18, FSU set a program record with 162 made threes. Under Saunders’ the Bobcats have posted the three most prolific three-point shooting seasons in program history. The Bobcats proved to be one of the top shooting teams in the conference in 2017-18 and led the CAC in free-throw shooting (70.3%) and finished second in three-point shooting (32.0%). Frostburg also finished third in threes made per game (6.2) and blocked shots per game (4.0). In 2016-17 Saunders helped guide the Bobcat women’s team to their first CAC Tournament appearance since 2012-13 and also became the first Frostburg head coach to
earn Coach of the Year honors by the league. Saunders was named the CAC’s Co-Coach of the Year, while sophomore guard Victoria Diggs was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Diggs averaged 11.3 points per game and senior forward Kirsten Rayner, an All-CAC Second Team selection, concluded the 2016-17 season sixth in the conference in scoring at 13.2 PPG. Frostburg finished the 2016-17 season second in the conference in steals (11.8), third in scoring average (68.0), third in three pointers made (160), third in assists (14.4) and fourth in blocks (4.1). In 2015-16, Frostburg collected three wins and finished runner-up in the Jim Crawley Tournament for the second-straight season. The Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC in offensive rebounding (14.8), sixth in assists (12.5), sixth in blocks (3.5), seventh in total rebounding (39.2) and eighth in three-pointers made (86). The Bobcats capped the 2014-15 campaign with five wins in their final eight games. FSU finished 6-19 overall and was runner-up at the Jim Crawley Tournament. Saunders took over the reins of the program after serving as a graduate assistant for the last two years. The Bobcats saw steady improvement during her two seasons as an assistant. Frostburg increased its win total in each season, and capped the 2013-14 campaign with five wins in its final nine games. The Bobcats scored 19 points per game higher than the 2012-13 campaign and finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference at 68.8 PPG. In addition to its improved scoring, FSU led the league in offensive rebounds (17.3) and finished second in total rebounds (42.5), steals (13.2) and blocks (3.4). Saunders came to Frostburg after a four-year playing career at NCAA Division II Shepherd University. She finished 14th in school history in scoring and ranked second in field goals made and attempts during her career. As a junior, she was the recipient of both the Coach’s Award and Sara Cree Distinguished Athlete honor. Saunders completed her master’s degree in education from Frostburg State in May 2015 and received her bachelor’s degree in communication and new media from Shepherd in 2011.

2019-20 Season Preview
FrostburgSports.com
The Frostburg State women’s basketball team is primed for the inaugural season in its first year as a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and Division II. The Bobcats return five contributors and bring five talented newcomers into the fold under sixth-year head coach Carrie Saunders. Year in Review FSU posted their best record under Carrie Saunders, finishing with 15 wins and holding a home record of 9-3. Frostburg landed a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament for the third-straight season before falling to Mary Washington in overtime.

“I think a lot of things have changed obviously from last year to this year. First of all, the conference changed. That’s the biggest thing that’s going on here. Our fall sports are kind of gearing us up for it. That’s definitely the biggest change from last year to this year. Along with that graduating some pretty key people within our starting lineup and finding those replacements for them.” Frostburg won its second consecutive Jim Crawley Tournament with a win over Mount Aloysius, and picked up a signature win over Southern Virginia in Bobcat Arena. The Bobcats finished the season second in the CAC in 3-point field goal percentage (32.1%) and third in field goal percentage (39.6%). FSU also finished third in the conference in opponents points per game (57.6). Headliners FSU brings back nine players who played at least ten minutes per game in 2018-19. Three starters return as well each eclipsing at least 25 minutes of action. “A lot of leadership. They have been within the program now going on four years. They are key scorers for us as well. With Victoria Diggs, Amanda Emory and Sydney Stotler, Tori (Diggs) is a guard for us and Syd (Stotler) and Amanda (Emory) are obviously bigs for us so they also bring a wealth of knowledge to the younger kids from two different perspectives.” Graduate guard Victoria Diggs, and senior forward Amanda Emory both return after earning All-CAC honors. Diggs finished fourth in the CAC in scoring (14.8). While Emory finished tied for second in rebounds per game (7.4). Diggs performed well again from behind the arc in the CAC, boasting the second highest
“From them individually we are always looking for them to be scorers for us to stay in games and be able to be there for us in big moments whether it’s defending key people, making big shots, getting rebounds, and obviously for those three we need to keep them healthy. That’s a really big key for us this year.” Sophomore Drew Dunathan looks to gain more opportunities in the rotation finishing the season with nine starts down the stretch. Dunathan averaged just over four rebounds per game (4.2) and finished fourth on the team in offensive rebounds (26). “Drew Dunathan as well she’s just a hard nose scrappy player who doesn’t take a possession off so we are looking for her to bring that energy to the floor.” “We’ll start kind of on the inside here with Jada Holland. She was a transfer to us last year and she has taken a really big role this preseason and has continued in our first two scrimmages to really perform well so we are looking for her to take on a pretty big role in the paint. From the outside returners we’ve got Kayla Wilson and Anhai Allen. We want those two to come in strong. What I need for them is to control the floor, handle the ball, distribute, and score when they can obviously. Kayla is definitely a scorer and Anhai is definitely a distributor so we’ve got to get that production out of them.” New Faces Coach Saunders and her staff are excited to bring in five new Bobcats after losing two seniors a season ago. This year’s newcomers consist of sophomore Morgan Dombroski, along with first-years Ciara Thomas, Kaitlyn Rogers, Kyrsten Joseph, and Arianna Briggs-Hall.
DIGGS 3-point field goal makes per game (2.6). She also finished second in free throw percentage (82.7%). Diggs led the Bobcats in scoring again (15.0) while also securing the top spot in steals with 68 on the season. Senior Sydney Stotler and Emory look to hold down the frontcourt as they have started a combined 115 games at FSU. Stotler led the CAC in field goal percentage (61.8%) and finished second in blocks per game (1.9). Emory finished fourth in offensive rebounds per game (2.6) in the CAC.Her 68 offensive rebounds led the Bobcat squad. Emory also finished second on the team in scoring (12.1) and assist (56).

“We also brought in a transfer, Morgan Dombroski. We are really looking for her to kind of fill a role. She’s a little bit of a taller guard for us so she’s going to bring some height to the guard position. She can score, she can defend, but she’s got a good voice out there and she understands the game so we are just trying to put all the pieces together at this point.” Around the MEC The Mountain East Conference contains 12 teams on the women’s basketball side. This means FSU will be playing 22 MEC games in the 2019-20 season. The Bobcats will play five non-conference games before their first MEC matchup on November 23 against West Virginia Wesleyan. “Conference is tough. Our goal is to hang with the bottom and then be able to compete with the top. I think for us it’s just to go out and have fun and play basketball. That’s the biggest thing. I want to kind of take away the hype of it all. Yes, it is exciting but it is still basketball so that’s what I want to focus on going into this weekend and just go out and try to get a win.” “There’s a lot of attention on us but for us as a team just too kind of be there for each other through the ups and downs of the weekend because there will be highs and there will be lows so I think as long as we maintain that I think we will come out with a win.”
