BYRNES HEAD COACH PLATTSBURGH STATE

Keith Byrnes enters his 18th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2019 and has led the Bobcats to a 166-129-34 overall record. He is the secondwinningest coach in the 78-year history of the Frostburg men’s program. Over the last eight seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 69 wins, 21 ties and four appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament (2011-13 & 2015). FSU has posted 32 wins and 10 ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and has earned seven berths in the CAC Tournament. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. Over the last three seasons, Frostburg has posted 22 wins despite loading its schedule with several nationally and regionallyranked teams. Last fall, FSU was eliminated from the CAC Tournament on PKs by 12th-ranked Mary Washington, while in 2016, the Bobcats nearly knocked off eighth-ranked Kenyon after surrendering a late lead. Frostburg emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the nation following the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In ‘15, the Bobcats finished eighth in the nation in save percentage (.883) after ranking second nationally (.909) following the ’14 campaign. In 2015, Frostburg was 21st in DIII in team goals against average (.64) and 35th in shutout percentage (0.50). FSU finished with nine shutouts, including four in the CAC. The Bobcats also opened the season with five shutouts in their first six games. At the other end of the field, Frostburg finished second in the CAC in points per game (5.94) and second in scoring offense (2.22). In 2014, Frostburg captured fifth in DIII in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU, which finished 10-6-3 overall, posted 11 shutouts, including five in the CAC. In 2012, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008. In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with

an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

ERDMAN ASSISTANT COACH S T. F R A N C IS B RO O K LY N

Seth Erdman begins his second season with the Frostburg State men’s soccer staff as an assistant coach in 2018. In his first season, Erdman assisted in leading the Bobcats to the CAC Tournament semifinals. He also led first-year goalkeeper Joel Assal to being named CAC Co-Rookie of the Year. He finished the season with 10 or more saves in two games and eight saves in FSU’s double overtime tie against Mary Washington in the CAC Tournament semifinals. Senior defender Brett Basham and sophomore forward Randy Putman collected First-Team and Second-Team All-CAC, respectively. Putnam played in all 19 games and paced the Bobcats in scoring with 15 points behind five goals and five assists. Erdman worked with the St. Francis Brooklyn men’s soccer team to train and evaluate high school goalkeepers from 2013-16. He worked as a goalkeeper coach with the United States Naval Academy summer camp in 2013 and as a youth coach for Lower Dauphin from 2009-11. Erdman wrapped up his collegiate playing career as a

goalkeeper at Division I St. Francis Brooklyn from 2013-2016. He also played the 2012 season at Longwood. Erdman was a member of three Northeast Conference Championship teams (2013, 2014 and 2016) while helping the Terriers to 45 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances. Erdman appeared in 13 games with 11 starts in 2016. He logged over 1,000 minutes in net and made 37 saves with four shutouts. During his college career, Erdman served as the Vice President for the St. Francis Brooklyn Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Erdman also played for the U-20 City Islanders from 2012-13 and the U-23 City Islanders from 2015-15. He spent the 2017 soccer season as a commentator for St. Francis Brooklyn men’s soccer team. He graduated from St. Francis Brooklyn in 2017 with a degree in business management and a concentration in marketing. He assisted the SFC marketing team with entertainment and fan engagement initiatives at basketball games from 2014-16.

2019 Season Preview

Over the last few years, the strength of the Frostburg men’s

soccer program has been its stifling defense and solid midfield play and 18th-year head coach Keith Byrnes doesn’t expect that to change in 2019. In fact, Byrnes and his staff will rely on those two groups again this fall as they try to improve on their attacking third.

“The strength is the backline,” said Byrnes. “We return four

starters in the back, including our returning starter in goal, who was the CAC Rookie of the Year last fall. We hung our hat on our defense last year for sure as they kept us in games. Sometimes we just needed to score one goal to hold on for a 1-0 win.

“It’s just a matter of the offense has to do their job and get

us on the board and give us chances to put some teams away that we didn’t last year,” added Byrnes. “We kept teams in the game and let them hang around and, you know, ideally I think we can score two or three and maybe it’s not as close of a match as last year.”

This year’s defensive unit will be led by the return of team

[ G E AT Z ]

captain and senior Blake Geatz, along with sophomores Jose Rodriguez and Cameron Coates. Sophomore Joel Assal returns for his second year in goal after starting 18 games in 2018.

“I thought the returning players this year really developed and they showed heart and grit,” said Byrnes. “They found

a way to win games last year when we weren’t that good offensively. That determination and that fight we got back into the program that we lacked for a couple of years.”

Last fall, the Bobcats posted seven shutouts and allowed just 1.16 goals per game. Down the stretch, FSU allowed

just four goals in the final seven games and posted a shutout in the CAC Tournament semifinals against nationally-ranked Mary Washington.

“We focused on recruiting attacking players because our offense struggled and we had to manufacture a lot of goals

last year,” stated Byrnes. “We relied heavily on our defense and with most of them returning, we felt like we could focus on the offensive side for recruiting. Hopefully we’ve got some guys that can step up where we were lacking last year.”

Byrnes and his staff also boast the return of a healthy and talented midfield that features junior Randy Putnam, junior

Logan Imbraguglio, sophomore Trevor Namie and a healthy Jake Meredith (junior).

Byrnes, the second winningest coach in program history, has guided his Bobcat teams to nearly 170 wins under his

leadership. He has also led FSU to seven CAC Tournament appearances in nine years as a member of the league and his teams made trips to the ECAC Tournament four times. Inside Look With the change to NCAA Division II, all Frostburg athletic teams have a bit of uncertainty when it comes to competition, opponents, travel, etc., but Byrnes and staff feel the team is prepared and ready for what is on the slate for the fall season.

2019 Season Preview

“I think this team has more technical ability than we had

last year with the guys we’ve brought in,” noted Byrnes. “It’s just a matter of how we mesh everybody together now, which is always the issue. I think they can be very, very competitive, and it’s just a matter of doing all the little things right that maybe we made some mistakes on last year that cost us some games.”

Statistically, Putnam and Assal lead the group of returners

as Putnam led the team in scoring last fall and Assal emerged as one of the top keepers in Division III.

Putnam started 18 of 19 games last season and led the

Bobcats in scoring with 15 points on five goals and five assists.

“Randy obviously is one of our leaders,” added Byrnes. “He

sets the tone with his focus and work rate.”

Assal played nearly 1700 minutes during his 18 starts as a

first-year and finished the season with five shutouts.

“Joel looks sharp,” noted Byrnes. “He’s in better shape,

he’s more focused and he wants more. He wants to have a big season. He wants to be all conference and he’s doing all the right things right now.”

[ RO D R I G U E Z ]

Imbraguglio has been solid presence in the middle for

Byrnes for two years now and is recovering from an injury that slowed him last year. In his two years as a Bobcat, he has appeared in 25 games.

In the back, Rodriguez and Coates combined to start 33

games as first-year players and the duo played a major role in helping Frostburg allow just 22 goals all last fall.

On the official roster, Geatz is listed as a defender but is

arguably Frostburg’s most versatile player. He is the only returning player that started all 19 games last fall and he finished with two goals and tied for the team-lead with five assists. He was named the CAC Defensive Player of the Week in early October after scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout victory over Christopher Newport.

Meredith returns for his third year with the Bobcats and has

appeared in a total of 16 games. He will be a valuable member of a defensive unit that posted seven shutouts a year ago.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
