Melon House Fair calienta motores

Enza Zaden prepara su evento anual con importantes novedades que marcan la diferencia gracias a sabor, resistencias y a su apuesta por programas completos ‘All-Year Round’

La tradicional Melon House Fair de Enza Zaden calienta motores. El evento se ha convertido en una cita imprescindible en el calendario del sector, y la casa de semillas volverá a abrir sus puertas durante la úlima semana de junio y la primera de julio para mostrar todo el potencial de su portfolio.

Nuevamente ponen el foco en dos conceptos clave: ‘Las Resistencias Marcan la Diferencia’ y ‘All-Year Round’ (soluciones para cubrir los 365 días del año con el mismo tipo de producto) que se unen a la importancia del sabor para un cultivo como el del melón.

Enza Zaden ofrecen programas completos de melón Piel de sapo, Amarillo, Galia y Cantalup, los tres primeros con resistencias a oídio y pulgón. Y aumenta la oferta de Charentais (con resistencia a pulgón) y Branco.

Piel de sapo

En la gama de melón piel de sapo, completan todo el programa desde Almería a Castilla-La Mancha con resistencias a oídio (además de pulgón), buen porte de planta, producción y sabor. Genci Armero, responsable de Melón para Iberia en Enza Zaden, explica a Fruit Today que este año presentan dos novedades: Barroso, para invernaderos de Almería; y Corrales, un material de muy buen sabor para ciclo medio-tardío en Murcia y tardío en Castilla-La Mancha.

Amarillo

Como en Piel de sapo, en melón Amarillo ofrecen un programa completo con resistencias a oídio y pulgón para todas las zonas. Lo más nuevo es Mielón, un material desarrollado para el segmento medio en cultivos bajo plástico en Almería. Destaca por ser muy productivo y por la calidad de sus frutos, sin problemas internos ni manchas en la piel, y con una buena poscosecha.

En fase precomercial tienen, además, E25M.01256, para tardío en Murcia y trasplantes de Castilla-La Mancha.

Galia

Dentro de su programa con doble resistencia, Enza Zaden ofrece la variedad tem- prana Bernal, enfocada principalmente a Murcia (aunque se puede cultivar también en Almería), y después continúa con Maioral, para cultivos en Castilla-La Mancha.

Cantaloup

La línea de Cantaloup incorpora la resistencia a pulgón en todos sus materiales, y suma uno nuevo en fase de introducción, su primera variedad Cantalup con doble resistencia a oídio y pulgón. Se llama E25S.01310 y nace como complemento a Enzor y se enmarca en ciclo medio en Murcia y Castilla-La mancha.

Charentais

Como en Cantaloup, toda la oferta de melón Charentais de Enza Zaden cuenta con resistencia a pulgón. Son las ya conocidas Makeba, Pleiade y Volupta.

Branco

Para el mercado portugués, cabe destacar la variedad Podengo, un melón Branco con doble resistencia a oídio y pulgón, que afronta ya su segundo año en el mercado.

Sabor en sandía

Este año a la sandía Tyrion (mini negra), se une una sandía negra sin semillas para Murcia y La Mancha, CLM E26S.00179. Esta variedad ya se pudo ver en las jornadas del año pasado y pasará a comercial a lo largo de 2023. Genci Armero subraya sus principales características: muy buen sabor, intensidad de carne y muy buen cuaje, gracias a una planta fuerte que cubre muy bien los frutos.

Además, en la Melon House Fair los asistentes podrán ver variedades que ya comercializan en EE.UU., Riogrande y Cracket Jack, que se están probando en España. “Externamente son tipo Crimson, son muy buenas de comer y tienen una muy buena poscosecha”.

Enza Zaden is preparing its annual event with important new developments that are making a difference thanks to flavour, resistances and their commitment to complete ‘All-Year Round’ programmes

Enza Zaden’s traditional Melon House Fair is limbering up. The event has become an essential date on the sector’s calendar, and the seed company will open its doors again during the last week of June and the first week of July to show the full potential of its portfolio.

Once again, they are putting the spotlight on two key concepts: ‘Resistances Make a Difference’ and ‘All-Year Round’ (solutions to cover the 365 days a year with the same type of product) that are added to the importance of flavour for the melon crop.

Enza Zaden offers complete programmes in Piel de Sapo, Yellow, Galia and Cantaloupe. The first three include resistances to powdery mildew and aphids. And the offer of Charentais (with resistance to aphids) and Branco has increased.

Piel de Sapo

In the Piel de Sapo melon range, they are completing the entire programme from Almeria to Castilla-La Mancha with resistances to powdery mildew (in addition to aphids), good-sized plants, good production and flavour. Genci Armero, Head of Melons for Iberia at Enza Zaden, explains to Fruit Today that this year they are presenting two new developments: Barroso, for greenhouses in Almeria; and Corrales, a material with very good flavour for medium-late cycle in Murcia and late in Castilla-La Mancha.

Yellow

As in Piel de Sapo, in Yellow melons, they are offering a complete programme with resistances to powdery mildew and aphids for all regions. The latest is Mielón, a material developed for the medium segment in crops under plastic in Almeria. It stands out due to its high production and the quality of its fruit, without any internal problems, or spotting on the skin, and with a good postharvest.

In a pre-commercial phase, they also have E25M.01256, for late cycle in Murcia, and transplants from Castilla-La Mancha.

Galia

Within its programme with double resistance, Enza Zaden offers the early variety Bernal, mainly focused on Murcia (although it may also be grown in Almeria), which is then continued with Maioral, for crops in CastillaLa Mancha.

Cantaloupe

The Cantaloupe line incorporates resistance to aphids in all its materials and it has added a new melon in an introductory phase, its first Cantaloupe variety with double resistance to powdery mildew and aphids. It is called E25S.01310 and it is born as a complement to Enzor within the medium cycle for Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha.

Charentais

As in the Cantaloupe segment, Enza Zaden’s entire offer of Charentais melons has resistance to aphids. These are the already well-known varieties: Makeba, Pleiade and Volupta.

Branco

For the Portuguese market, the variety Podengo stands out. It is a Branco melon with double resistance to powdery mildew and aphids that is now in its second year on the market.

Flavour in watermelons

This year, the Tyrion watermelon (mini black), has been added to a black seedless watermelon for Murcia and La Mancha, CLM E26S.00179. This variety could already be seen at the open days last year and it will become a commercial material over the year of 2023. Genci Armero underscores its main characteristics: very good flavour, intensity of flesh and very good setting, thanks to a strong plant that covers the fruit very well. Additionally, at the Melon House Fair visitors will be able to see varieties that are already on sale in the US: Riogrande and Cracker Jack, which are being tried out in Spain. “Externally, they are of the Crimson type; they are very good to eat and have a very good postharvest.”
