INTRODUCING
Global Connoisseur: Tulip pedestal vase from Napco; Pedestal bowl and ball vases from Jamali Floral & Garden Supplies; Stamp ribbon from Offray.
Creative souls must constantly create, and their minds constantly thirst for inspiration. But in the world of floral design, as with many commercial endeavors, creativity is often restrained by the confines of mainstream salability. Pablo Picasso once alluded to the dichotomy, saying, “The chief enemy of creativity is good sense.” To stimulate your creativity and invigorate your mind, you must be able to view things in new ways or from different perspectives. As Edward de Bono, a physician, inventor and author who is widely regarded as the world’s leading authority in the field of creative thinking, has stated, “Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”
But to do that, you may have to throw practicality out the window. And that is why Florists’ Review has produced this new publication, called Design Portfolio. Today, few, if any, floral design resources are exclusively devoted to providing unfettered creative stimulation, and that, precisely, is the mission of this premiere issue, which was brought to life through a sponsorship from BloomNet. BloomNet not only made possible the array of flowers showcased in this edition but also contributed trendforward containers from its subsidiary company, Napco. And most importantly, BloomNet tapped the extraordinary floral artist Bill Taylor, AIFD Fellow, to lead the floral design phase of the project and collaborate with Florists’ Review’s own design visionary, Talmage McLaurin, AIFD, and photographer John Collins (left and above left).

We hope this Design Portfolio sparks a renewed enthusiasm for floral design and reawakens a desire to expand your creative horizon.

millennial zest Carefree colors and color palettes, vibrant patterns, and adventurous compositions join in a hopeful array that is unified by its youthful energy. Cheery Gerberas, which may be the flower of this generation, along with free-spirited patternon-pattern play, will capture the intrigue of the young and young at heart.
Surrounded by floral patterns, one of which is on a quilted weekend bag from burton + BURTON, an energetic collection of blossoms is arranged pavé style in a Napco bowl. The mixed prints and radiant floral hues are guaranteed to banish gloom. A happy grouping of Gerberas, loosely gathered into a traditional topiary design and then accessorized by additional Gerberas at the base, amplifies the charm factor with Offray’s perky ribbon tied around its “trunk.” Spray chrysanthemum blossoms are adhered to the center of the bow and Napco‘s daisy vase with OASIS® UGlu™.
Design Portfolio
(above left) Jaunty flower placements and an arching Gerbera stem, woven through the upright stems, form a modern “trellis” with all the joyful exuberance of youth. The bright hue of Napco’s container adds even more vivacious charm. Classic toile and bold floral prints become a complex pairing that is subdued by white containers — an owl from burton + BURTON and a textured pot from Scheurich Pottery— and a monochromatic gathering of Gerberas. Colorful mismatched prints are unified by the spunky arrangements of Gerberas in butterfly bud vases from Napco.
Design Portfolio
by the seashore The soothing sounds of waves gently rolling onto beaches are often interpreted in home décor and accessories with calming, sandy neutrals quietly accented by pale watery blues. But the beach is for more than just relaxation; it’s a place for splashing, surfing and other frivolity, and today’s seaside-inspired palettes reference the fun factor with amped-up color values culled from sparkling reefs and the deep blue sea. Shells, driftwood and other briny bling ensure that the modern coastal collection remains totally tidal.
Metallic gray vases from Napco, with their abstract shapes, seem to reflect the ebb and flow of the tide. The molten vessels are filled lavishly with foamy mounds of David Austin’s ‘Miranda’ roses, peonies and carnations. Shells are scattered randomly, as if they have washed upon the shore.
With a bit of Asian flair, this arrangement of fresh-cut Phalaenopsis orchids, in a dish garden from Napco, speaks of tropical seas. The permanent staghorn fern from Sullivans can be shaped into a sculptural depiction of kelp or seaweed swaying with the tide.
Design Portfolio
Fern fronds, colorful foliages and a fresh Echeveria bring aquatic shapes and patterns into a lush gathering of gardeny blooms. The crisscrossing driftwood container from Baisch & Skinner contrasts with the romantic floral assortment.
Sinuata statice, also known as sea lavender, is often used as a filler, but here, it’s upgraded to a place of prominence as a feature flower and accented by leaves clipped from a Cyclamen plant. The statice’s texture and shape are reminiscent of coral formations, and the seashell vases, from burton + BURTON, complete the coastal creations.
Design Portfolio
An “ocean spray of callas splashes from the depths of a florid mound arranged into a driftwood vessel from Jamali Floral & Garden Supplies. The vase and its companion orb are created from bits of driftwood that are artistically secured together.
global connoisseur Vintage and new maps, stamps from faraway lands and intriguing finds from exotic locales suggest worldly travels by jetsetters who are connoisseurs of global fare. But for those with an immutable migratory instinct, where no maps are required, the world is less about exploration than it is about completing a journey. So, for all types of world travelers, this theme celebrates the trip and the destination, relishing in what can be discovered along the way.
World travelers are fortunate to sample vintner’s fare from around the globe, and this gathering raises a glass to red wine. The burgundy-hued florals, including the luscious ‘Minerva’ carnations, reflect the hues of the winemaker’s harvest while d.stevens llc‘s ribbon, printed with wine varietals and regions, continues the theme. Used as a bookmark, d.stevens llc‘s Jewels by the Yard could wrap goblet stems, from Allstate Floral & Craft (foreground) and Jamali Floral & Garden Supplies (background), so drinkers can identify their own. Exotic blossoms that hail from multiple ports of call are collected into a ceramic planter from Napco and placed upon an Asian-influenced stand to add to the worldly flavor. Maps, books and additional ceramic vases from Napco contribute to the global market concept.
Design Portfolio
The Napco pot cover, which reminds of a memory book with its motif, showcases several blue butterflies. When their captivating color is repeated using fluttering versions from Regency International, the pale blossoms between them gain extra prominence. Starting with their transformation from caterpillar to flying insect and culminating in their migratory journey, where, along the way, they are admired for their intricate patterns and colors, butterflies are among the world’s most intriguing travelers. While it’s common to display the nectar-seeking insects alighting on blossoms, the ribbon from d.stevens llc creates the illusion of insects on the move. On the pot from Napco, more butterflies appear to flutter below the Leucospermum collection. This showy Phalaenopsis orchid is displayed, in a ceramic bowl from Napco, as a rare specimen discovered on travels to tropical destinations. Groups of fresh blossoms, including fragrant ‘Cool Water’ roses, accessorize the plant at its base. Botanical prints, oversized sugar pine cones from Columbia Pine Cones & Botanicals and a fish pitcher from burton + BURTON demonstrate the harmony of meaningful finds.

early birds At retail locations of every type and size, birds are landing in flocks everywhere. From motifs to statuary, and everything in between, the winged creatures, as well as their eggs and various accouterments, are capturing consumers’ interest. These always-popular floral accents have now gone mainstream.
A nested set of trays from Napco is ideal for stacking and accessorizing with gardeny florals. A pair of glossy birds, also from Napco, have set up house in the tiered structure.
Arranged into the cylinder of a double vase from burton + BURTON, fresh flowers, foliages and feathers are surrounded by decorative eggs, which are placed between the two layers of glass.
Design Portfolio
A bird feeder from Napco is converted into a pedestal bowl for holding fresh lilies and ivy. Burlap ribbon, some of which is frayed, and cording from Reliant Ribbon also spill from the feeder in waterfall fashion. A twittering flock from Baisch & Skinner has alighted onto the handle of Napco’s garden planter, into which “freshly picked garden roses, Hypericum berries, lilies and carnations are assembled.
Design Portfolio
eco vogue Inspired by a continually growing interest in minimized carbon footprints and environmental protections, consumers clamor for all things “green.” The hue itself, in various tints, tones and shades, reflects the natural, organic aspects of the ecocentric setting while recycled, repurposed and sustainable materials are reflected by the chosen containers and accessories. In the past, these environmentally friendly items had to look the part, so consumers felt confident in their choices. Today, however, eco-awareness partners seamlessly with chic style.
Fresh Hypericum berries and blades of grass combine with Regency International’s realistic permanent Echeverias, which can be reused multiple times. They’re arranged into a sleek ceramic vessel from Jamali Floral & Garden Supplies along with Jamali’s grassy and woody orbs. The pot receives a textural enhancement from Reliant Ribbon’s green fiber band. A brown version, placed nearby, repeats the woody tones. Fresh fruits, attached to wood picks, mingle among the verdant gathering of flowers and foliage. A raffia table runner and place mats from Jamali Floral & Garden Supplies provide a bucolic texture that partners naturally with Napco‘s dish garden planter.
Design Portfolio
Napco‘s rectangular planter corrals a trio of spice jars from Jamali Floral & Garden Supplies, resulting in a composite container that has a sense of reuse and repurpose. River cane and Jamali’s decorative sea glass accents finish the composition with ecofriendly flair.
