Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1883, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state of Florida. Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center houses a fullsized basketball court, weight and aerobic rooms, and a student lounge and is adjacent to an NCAA regulation size swimming pool.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957. 2

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

Kerr College President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person-academically, socially, spiritually, and physically-so that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding

Pete Meyer Director of Athletics Pete Meyer is in his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern – following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-08). In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine 4

scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics. As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include a soon-to-be completed residential life facility designed by worldrenowned architect Robert Stern; a state-of-the-art center for the study of languages and literatures; an Internet café in the library and an addition to the library; the expansion of wireless Internet access and campus-wide technology upgrades; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida, The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, The Polk Museum of Art and the Polk Arts Alliance. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a thirteen-year-old son Eddie. Roy Kerr is the author of a recently-published book about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game.”

State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirtyfour Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 20-year-old Ross, 18-year old Mitchell and 17-year-old Megan.

HEAD COACH JIM TYRRELL Jim Tyrrell is in his first season as head coach of the Moccasins’ baseball program. He officially assumed his duties on July 1, 2008. He had been named to the position Feb. 21 in conjunction with the announcement that former head coach Pete Meyer was relinquishing his coaching duties to become director of athletics. After serving four seasons as Meyer’s top assistant, Tyrrell is just the fifth head baseball coach in 50 years at FSC, following Meyer (200208), Chuck Anderson (1984-2002), Joe Arnold (1977-83) and Hal Smeltzly (1958-76). “To be selected to take over a program with the prestige of this one and to follow the caliber of men who have preceded me in this position is truly an honor,” Tyrrell said at the time of his appointment. “I’m excited to accept the challenge of keeping Florida Southern’s baseball program at the very top level of Division II.” He joined the Moccasin staff after serving as pitching coach at Old Dominion University in 2004. In his first FSC

season in 2005, the Moccasin pitching staff led the Sunshine State Conference in ERA (3.46) and strikeouts (426), as FSC won the NCAA Division II championship. In charge of the Moccasin pitching staff in his four years as an assistant, Tyrrell has seen five of his Moccasin pitchers drafted. Kyle DeYoung, the MVP of the 2005 Division II Championship, was drafted by the Houston Astros’ organization. Dan Albritton and Brett Robinson, seniors on the 2007 squad, were drafted by the White Sox and Astros, respectively. Jeremy Thorne and Ryan Koch, seniors on the 2008 team, were selected by the Angels and Blue Jays, respectively, and currently are in those clubs’ minor league organizations. Tyrrell has a strong history of developing pitchers. One of his pitchers at Old Dominion was Justin Verlander, who now is a star with the Detroit Tigers. Verlander was the second player chosen in the 2004 Major League Draft and the 2006 American League Rookie of the Year. Under Tyrrell, the Old Dominion pitching staff set school records for strikeouts (471) and fewest walks (168) in a season. In addition to being the pitching coach at Old Dominion, Tyrrell also was the recruiting coordinator, the same duties he had as an assistant at Florida Southern. His appointment as the Moccasins’ head coach is his second head coaching position. Before going to Old Dominion, he was head baseball coach at Marist College in New York for the 2003 season, after serving three seasons there as the pitching coach. He led Marist to a 33-20-1 record and the pitching staff ranked 10th in earned run average in NCAA Division I. Four Marist players were drafted from that team. Overall, Marist won three conference championships and made three NCAA tournament appearances during Tyrrell’s tenure on the coaching staff. Tyrrell’s collegiate playing career began at Old Dominion, where he was 4-0 as a freshman pitcher. He spent his sophomore season at Dutchess Community College (N.Y.), before the Boston Red Sox drafted him in the 14th round of the 1992 free agent draft. Former Moc Al Corbeil returns to FSC an assistant coach. Corbeil played just one season for FSC starting all 53 games in 2001. He hit .399 and led the team with 15 home runs and 62 RBI. A first-team All-SSC and All-South Region selection, he was a second-team All-American. He was drafted in the 16th round by the Anaheim Angels and played seven seasons of professional baseball. Corbeil came to FSC after playing one season at Florida International, where he was a first-team All-American and the 2000 Sun Belt Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year, hitting .399 with 13 home runs and 73 RBI. Prior to his one season at FIU, he played two seasons at Manatee Community College, earning first-team all-state and all-conference recognition both years. He hit .427 for his career with 159 RBI. Corbeil has been an assistant coach at Manatee CC the past three seasons. He and his wife, Whitney, reside in Lakeland.

Brad Cook is in his first season on the Moccasin baseball staff. Cook was the baseball coach at Johnson City (N.Y.) High School for the past two seasons, leading his team to the Class A state championship game in 2007. He had the Class A Player of the Year and a first-team all-state pitcher on his team. Cook was a junior college All-American as an outfielder at Keystone Junior College before transferring to Marist College, where Jim Tyrrell was his pitching coach. Cook led the team in ERA in 2002 and Marist’s team ERA was fourth in the nation. Following his collegiate career, he played two seasons with the Elmira Pioneers of the Independent Northeast League. He received his bachelor’s degree in special education from Marist in 2003 and earned his master’s degree in middle school mathematics from Walden University in 2007. He was a special education teacher for four years before coming to Florida Southern.

New head coach Jim Tyrell has some big shoes to fill. His four predecessors have all won NCAA national championships. Hal Smeltzly (1957-76) won three titles in 1971, 1972 and 1975. Joe Arnold (1977-83) followed with NCAA championships in 1978 and 1981. Chuck Anderson (1984-2002) who was an assistant coach under Smelztly and Arnold and part of five previous championships, won three titles of his own in 1985 and 1995. Moccasin Athletic Training Services Every student-athlete at Florida Southern College is entitled to quality medical care while participating as a member of an athletic team. The athletic training/medical staff coordinates and delivers professional and comprehensive preventive care, treatment, rehabilitation and counseling services to all FSC student-athletes. The goal of athletic training services is to keep each student-athlete healthy and injury free. In the case of injury or illness, the staff will provide quality medical care enabling the student-athlete to return to participation both as a student and an athlete. The athletic training staff is comprised of four full-time nationally-certified and state-licensed athletic trainers. Florida Southern College also has an athletic training education program. Athletic training students from the program assist the staff athletic trainers in daily operations of the athletic training facility. The athletic training facility is located in Jenkins Field House. The facility is well equipped to provide treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The FSC sports medicine team is comprised of two orthopedic team physicians and consulting physicians in several specialties. All of these professionals work together to meet the student-athlete’s health care needs.

Al Green, MA, ATC, LAT, EMT

Al Green was named assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer in July 2007. Prior to joining Florida Southern College, Green was the general manager and athletic trainer for the Lakeland Thunderbolts, an indoor professional football team. He served as the director of marketing and business development and coordinator of athletic training services for Healthcare Management Systems (HMS), a Lakeland-based company. The former head athletic trainer and athletic administrator at the University of Kentucky, he has served in various capacities for the athletic training profession at the state, district and national levels. Green serves as the chairperson for the National Athletic Trainers Association Public Relations Committee. He was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2004. He also serves the community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Polk County Fire Department. Green is married to Sue Stanley-Green, FSC athletic training educational program director and also an NATA Hall of Fame member. They have one daughter, Logan. Green has three older children, Douglas, Jennifer and Tracy.

Kelly Cox, MA, ATC, LAT

Kelly Cox came to Florida Southern College from the University of South Florida where she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Big East Champion women’s softball team and the football team. She also completed an internship with the University of South Florida’s football team in the fall of 2005 after graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a specialization in Athletic Training and a minor in Health Science Education. While at the University of Florida she worked with the football, women’s soccer, and swimming and diving teams, as well as with local high school teams and at Shands Orthopedic Institute. During her time at USF she received her Master’s degree in Exercise Science through the Physical Education Department. Cox is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC physical education department.

Lindsey Williams, MS, ATC, LAT, EMT

Lindsey Williams graduated from Florida Southern College in 2002 with a degree in athletic training. She served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at The Ohio State University for two years, covering a variety of sports. She also worked in a physical therapy clinic and in orthopedic sales. Williams is an EMT and worked in the Columbus, Ohio, area prior to moving back to Florida in 2006. She now serves as a volunteer EMT with Polk County EMS. Williams is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC athletic training education and physical education programs. She has an English bulldog named Peanut.

Brian Simerville, MA, ATC, LAT

Brian Simerville came to Florida Southern College from the University of South Florida, where he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team. While at USF, he earned his master of arts degree in physical education: exercise science. He earned his bachelor of science degree in sports medicine: athletic training from Eastern Michigan University. Simerville is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC athletic training education and physical education programs.

Many players have excelled at Florida Southern College, many have gone on to play in the professional ranks, and many more have been successful in the business world. Eight Moccasins excelled to such an extent as members of the Florida Southern baseball team that their uniform numbers have been retired in their honor. The eight retired numbers are: #7 - Hal Smeltzly; #11 - Joe Arnold; #12 - Chuck Anderson; #17 - Greg Pryor; #20 - Jay Smith; #22 - Andy McGaffigan; #35 - Brett Tomko; and #43 - Ken Huebner.

As the Mocs’ head coach from 1959 to 1976, Hal Smeltzly guided the Mocs to a 391-166 record for a .702 winning percentage including three NCAA Division II National Championships (1971, 1972, 1975). From 1972 to 2000, he served as the college’s Director of Athletics.

As the Moccasins’ head coach from 1977 to 1983, Joe Arnold led Florida Southern College to a 316-69 record for an .821 winning percentage Arnold’s Moccasins won Regional titles in six of his seven years and NCAA Division II National Championships in 1978 and 1981.

ANDERSON

PRYOR

A two-time MVP for the Mocs in 1961 and ‘62, Anderson served as an assistant coach at FSC for 20 years and head coach from 1984 to 2002. He led the program to National Titles in 1985, ‘88, and ‘95, won 843 games and ranks second in D-II history with a .770 winning percentage.

SMITH

For three straight seasons, Jay Smith led the Mocs in wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. For his brilliant career, Smith totaled 43 wins, 471 strikeouts and 413 innings pitched - all school records. Twice, in 1971 and 1972, he led the Mocs in earned run average.

TOMKO

The 1995 National Player and Pitcher of the Year, Brett Tomko led the Mocs to the NCAA National Tomko tossed 21.1 shutout innings at the national tournament in recording two wins and a save. He was the Cincinnati Reds’ top pick in the 1995 draft and has pitched in the majors since 1997.

A two-fisted threat as a hitter and an infielder, Greg Pryor had a .333 batting average with 118 RBI and a .504 slugging percentage. In 1970, he led the Mocs with a .415 average with 54 RBI and a .609 slugging percentage. Pryor played 11 seasons in the major leagues.

McGAFFIGAN

Andy McGaffigan played for the Mocs in 1977 and ‘78 and posted a career record of 16-2, a 2.79 earned run average, and 177 strikoeuts in 174 innings. A 1977 First Team All-American, McGaffigan spent 10 seasons pitching in the major leagues.

HUEBNER

Three-time Moc MVP Ken Huebner posted an incredible 0.90 ERA in 1964, the second lowest ERA ever for any Moccasin player. As a hitter, Ken led the Mocs three years running in batting average. For his career he was 15-5 with a 1.45 ERA on the mound and a .376 hitter at the plate. 27

The Florida Southern baseball locker room underwent a renovation in 2008 which features individual wooden lockers with secure lock boxes for each player. The renovation were made possible, in part, by the generous donations of alumni and proceeds from the Joe Niekro Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament.

Hollis Wellness Center Pool, or jogging the 2.8 miles around Lake Hollingsworth. By the way, you can join Matt Thompson, Dean of Student Development, (pictured at right) on any of his regularly scheduled “Dash with the Dean” morning runs.

INSIDE THE MOCCASINS All of Florida Southern College’s residence halls offer wireless access in the common lobby areas and every room offers cable TV and is wired for internet access. Florida Southern has had 436 All-Americans (174 first-team; 89 second-team; 47 third-team; 49 honorable mention). SSC MAYOR’S CUP

For the last 22 years, the members of the Sunshine State Conference have competed for the Mayor’s Cup Trophy, given annually to the school with the best overall athletic program in the conference. One trophy is awarded to the best men’s program, while another is awarded to the best women’s. Competition for the men last year was conducted in cross-country, soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, and baseball; the women competed in cross-country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, crew, tennis, golf and softball. Points are awarded in descending order of a team’s finish in the SSC standings. Julianne Coleman (softball), Buck Dawson (cross country coach) and Jana Peterkova (women’s golf) were inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2008 bringing the number of inductees from Florida Southern College to 39. Nine Moccasin representatives were inducted into the inaugural class in 1991-92 and FSC has had at least one inductee in 14 of the 17 classes since the Hall’s inception. Clare “Doc” Henley Ball Park (aka Henley Field)

The Mocs play their home games at historic Henley Field, a 1,000-seat lighted ball park located a few blocks north of downtown Lakeland. Its cozy atmosphere makes it fun to attend a game, but it is tough on opponents. Combined with nearby Joker Marchant Stadium (which served as the Mocs’ home park for several games in past seasons) FSC has a winning percentage at home of better than 80%. Henley Field’s dimensions are 420 to straight-away center, 325 down the left field line, 330 down the right field line, 365 to left center and 385 to right center.

THE HISTORY OF HENLEY FIELD

Named for Clare “Doc” Henley, Henley Field, the home of the Moccasins, has been a Lakeland fixture since the 1920’s when it was known as Adair Field. In 1922, Clare Henley, president of the Lakeland Baseball Club, joined efforts with T.J. Appleyard and approached the Cleveland Indians about moving their Spring Training to Lakeland. In 1923 the Indians set up shop in Lakeland and played here for two seasons. Henley, owner of a series of Lakeland area pharmacies, would sell tickets at his stores and also charge for parking next to the park. On March 17, 1925 the dedication of “Athletic Park” took place with Major League Baseball Commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis as guest speaker. With attendance dwindling to just an average of just 110 fans in 1927, the Indians packed their bags and left Lakeland without a professional team Athletic Field originally was an open field, but in 1927 60

a wall encircled the 510’ by 440’ field. In 1933 Henley joined with the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and approached the Detroit Tigers about setting up camp at Athletic Field. In 1934, the Tigers began what today is the longest relationship between a major league team and a host spring training city. The Lakeland Chamber decided to honor Henley by naming the park in his honor and on March 29, 1952, Athletic Field was renamed Clare “Doc” Henley Ball Park. A writer for the Detroit News said of Henley, “He is the man who has done the most for the national sport of baseball in Lakeland.” Futhermore, the writer called Henley, the “Virtual Father of Lakeland Baseball.” During its spring training days Henley Field saw the likes of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, as well as Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, play here, in addition to Hall of Famer Al Kaline, whose grandson, Colin, is a current member of the Moccasin baseball team. In 1987, Henley Field was the fictional home to the Tampico Stogies semi-professional team in the HBO movie “Long Gone” starring William Peterson and Virginia Madsen. Clare Henley was born in 1888 in Lakeland. After graduating from Lakeland High School, Henley attended Stetson University and later studied at Atlanta College of Pharmacy. While in Atlanta, Henley played baseball at Georgia Tech although not a student at the school. Henley later took over his father’s pharmacy business and eventually sold spring training tickets in his five stores. His love for baseball inspired him to convince the City of Lakeland to purchase 70 acres of land from Dr. Pike Adair. New lights and a scoreboard were added along with an enhanced fan area behind the third base dugouts.
