Florida Southern College Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1883, Florida Southern is the oldest private college in the state of Florida. Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”

The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center houses a fullsized basketball court, weight and aerobic rooms, and a student lounge and is adjacent to an NCAA regulation size swimming pool.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

Kerr College President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person -academically, socially, spiritually, and physically -- so that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s studentcentered culture. PETE MEYER Director of Athletics In 2008-09, Pete Meyer served his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern - following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-08). Meyer was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s

models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics. As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include the newly completed Barnett Residential Life Center and the soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art Christoverson Humanities Building, both designed by world-renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern; TuTu’s Cyber Café in the Roux Library and the adjacent McKay Archives Center; the expansion of wireless Internet access, campus-wide technology upgrades, and the Rinker Technology Center, currently under construction; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida and All Saints’ Academy. An avid supporter of the arts, she is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art. She is in the first year of her term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a fifteen-year-old son Ed. Roy Kerr has authored two books about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game” (2007) and “Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Hitter” (2009).

representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirtyfour Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 21-year old Ross, 19-year old Mitchell and 18-year old Megan.

COACH DOUG GORDIN Doug Gordin has been men’s

head golf coach at Florida Southern College since 1995. In his 14 previous seasons at FSC, Gordin has led the Mocs to four NCAA national championships, including an unprecedented three straight in 1998, 1999 and 2000. In addition, the Mocs have produced three individual national champions under Gordin in Matt Saglio (1999), Jeff Klauk (2000) and Steve Sokol (2001). In 2008-09, the Moccasins placed third in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. They fell short of qualifying for the Division II Championship with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA South Regional, but did have an individual qualifier in Brian Richey, who placed 20th. After his first NCAA championship in 1996, Gordin was named the GCAA National Coach of the Year, an honor he would again win in 1998, 1999 and 2000. As a tribute to his career, Gordin was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Golf Coaches Association of America in January, 2001, where he joined his father, Dr. Richard Gordin, a member of the inaugural Class of 1980. The Moccasins have won a total of 11 NCAA national championships - a record for men’s golf in the NCAA Division II. In addition, Florida Southern has won 15 Sunshine State Conference titles. In his first season at FSC (1995-96), Gordin was named South Region Coach of the Year, as well as National Coach of the Year, by both Golf Week Magazine and the GCAA after the Mocs laid claim to their eighth national title. Before coming to Florida Southern, Gordin was the golf coach at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Georgia, for 13 years. While at Georgia Southern, he coached two PGA players (Jodie Mudd and Gene Sauers), led the Eagles to four conference championships and six runner-up titles, coached five GCAA All-Americans and was named the NCAA South District coach of the year and conference coach of the year an unprecedented four times. Now in his 31st year overall as a collegiate coach, Gordin is no stranger to success on the links. Prior to coaching at Georgia Southern in 1981, he served two years on the staff

at the University of Alabama under Conrad Rehling and one season as the head coach at Campbell University. As an undergraduate, Gordin played for his father at Ohio Wesleyan. The younger Gordin served as team captain his senior season when the Battlin’ Bishops finished sixth at the NCAA tournament. In the fall of 2002, Gordin was honored by his alma mater with the Robert Strimer Award for unusually significant contributions to intercollegiate athletics. In 2007 he was named to the FSC Sports Hall of Fame. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1978, Gordin joined the staff at Alabama, serving as assistant coach and assistant pro for the Crimson Tide. While in Tuscaloosa he earned his master’s degree. Gordin is a teaching consultant to the National Golf Foundation and is a member of the NCAA-USGA Relations Committee. He has been active in the GCAA for several years, even serving a stint as the organization’s national president. He is also a past chairman of the NCAA District III-South selection committee. Gordin and his 19-year old daughter, Gretchen (who is a student at the University of Florida) reside in Lakeland.

BLAKE HOLBROOK STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH

Blake Holbrook is serving his second season as a student coach after playing four seasons for the Moccasins. As a senior, he played in nine tournaments with a 75.92 stroke average. His best finish was a tie for 20th at the USF Ron Smith Invitational. For his career, he played in 29 tournaments and had a 76.28 stroke average. His career-best finish was a ninthplace finish at FSC’s Matlock Classic in 2006, which included his career-best individual round of 69. A graduate of Phillips HS in Orlando, Holbrook is completing work on his bachelor’s degree in business.

STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH

After earning honorable mention All-America recognition last season, Brian Richey is serving as a student coach for the Moccasins this season. Richey was the Moccasins’ top golfer down the stretch last spring. At the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, he was tied for first at the end of regulation with a 207, but lost in a playoff and finished second. At the NCAA Super Regional, he tied for fourth with a 214 and became the Moccasins’ lone qualifier for the NCAA Division II Championship, where he finished in a tie for 20th with a 214. He played in every tournament last season, was a counter in all but one and had a 73.46 stroke average, third-best on the team. His career-best score of 65 in the final round of the SSC Tournament was the Moccasins’ lowest round of the season. A graduate of Lakeland High School, Richey won the county golf tournament and was named Polk County co-golfer of the year as a senior. He graduated last spring with a degree in sports management from Florida Southern.

FIVE MOCS ON 2009 PGA TOUR

“POP” SIKES GOLF DAY Started in 1976 by the late Jimmie Sikes as a way to honor his father, Leon “Pop” Sikes, and help support the Florida Southern golf program, the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day has helped enable the Moccasin golf team to win 11 NCAA Division II National Championships, as well as six national runner-up finishes and three third place finishes. “None of the success that the golf team has had could have been possible without the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day,” says former FSC coach Charley Matlock. “It’s because of the love and concern of the Sikes family that the Golf Day has been so successful. From the beginning, they made sure this was a first-class event.” Along with the Sikes family, others have contributed to this annual event. George Jenkins, founder of Publix Super Markets, opened his Lone Palm Golf Club facilities each year to stage the event. John Mack and Clayton Lyons helped to organize the event in its infant years, while Joe Hodge, Head Pro at Lone Palm, took charge of the organizational details at the golf course. Held annually in October, “Pop” Sikes Golf Day has raised approximately $1.25 million and has averaged over 100 participants since its inception.

In 2009 five former Florida Southern golf standouts played on the PGA Tour – Marco Dawson, Lee Janzen, Jeff Klauk, Rocco Mediate and Darron Stiles. Twice during the 2009 season all five former Moccasins were entered in the same tournament – the Puerto Rico Open in March and the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee in July. Dawson, a teammate of Janzen and Mediate at Florida Southern, has earned over $4 million on the PGA Tour. His best finish in a PGA event was second in the 1995 Greater Milwaukee Open and he has one win on the Nationwide Tour. He was a member of the Mocs’ 1982 and 1985 NCAA championship team. A three-time All-American and 1986 NCAA Division II champion, Janzen is a two-time winner of the U.S. Open (1993, 1998). Overall he has won eight PGA titles during his career and earned almost $15 million since joining the tour in 1989. He played on the Mocs’ 1985 and 1986 NCAA championship teams. Klauk had an outstanding rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2009, with three top ten finishes and earning over $1 million. His top finishes were fourth at The Honda Classic and a tie for fourth at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. He was the 2000 NCAA Division II individual champion on the Moccasins’ 2000 national championship team. Mediate, a two-time All-American in 1983 and 1984, has climbed steadily into national prominence on the PGA Tour. His popularity soared to celebrity status in 2008 as a result of his dramatic final round and playoff battle with Tiger Woods at the U.S. Open. He has five PGA victories to his credit and has earned over $15. He credits former Moccasin coach Charlie Matlock with having a major influence on his game. Stiles has earned over $1 million on both the PGA Tour and on the Nationwide Tour. He had one top ten finish last year on the PGA Tour and has four career wins on the Nationwide Tour. He was a three-time All-American (1993, 1994, 1995) at FSC. With the election of Dawson and Stiles to the FSC Sports Hall of Fame for 2010, all five former Moccasins will be in the FSC Sports Hall of Fame.

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions.” Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won NCAA national titles (71 total) in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, and are nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross Commissioner country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE HALL OF FAME Lisa Ball (women’s golf) and Wayne Raath (men’s golf) were inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2009 bringing the number of inductees from Florida Southern College to 41. Nine Moccasin representatives were inducted into the inaugural class in 1991-92 and FSC has had at least one inductee in 15 of the 18 classes since the Hall’s inception. Of the 41inductees, 27 have been student-athletes, while 10 have come from the coaching ranks and four from administrative and staff positions.

FSC MEN FIRST, WOMEN SECOND IN 2008-09 SSC Mayor’s Cup

Florida Southern finished tied for first in the men’s division and second in the women’s division for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor’s Cup for all-sports competition for the 2008-09 academic year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor’s Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and eight sports for women: basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2008-09 academic year marked the 23rd year of the Mayor’s Cup competition. FSC has won the men’s division 11 times and also won the women’s division 10 times.

Go 1/2 mile to Ingraham Avenue and turn right. Go to McDonald and turn right. Parking lot is on the left, just past Barnett Field. From Orlando Airport ... Take 417 South (toll road) to I-4 West and follow directions above. From Tampa/St. Petersburg/Fort Myers ... Follow I-4 East to Exit 27 (570E, Polk Parkway exit). Go approximately 6.1 miles to Exit 7 (South Florida Avenue - toll: 50 cents). Turn left onto 37N (South Florida Avenue) and go to McDonald Street. Turn right on McDonald and turn go seven blocks to the campus. Park in the second parking lot on the right (Barnett Field). From Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale ... Take Florida Turnpike north to Yeehaw Junction (Hwy 60). Take Hwy 60 to 98 North to Lakeland. Watch for Grove Park Shopping Plaza and turn left at Crystal Lake and go to Lake Hollingsworth Drive. Turn right and go to Ingraham and turn right. Go to stop sign (McDonald) and turn left. Parking lot will be on the left, just past Barnett Field.
