Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1883, Florida Southern is the oldest private college in the state of Florida. With an enrollment of more than 2,000 students, Florida Southern offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and distinctive graduate programs in business administration, education, and nursing. Florida Southern is listed in the prestigious Fiske Guide To Colleges, the nation’s top-selling college guide, and annually is ranked in the Forbes magazine, The Princeton Review, and U.S. News & World Report listings of the nation’s best colleges. Studies show that approximately 94% of Florida Southern graduates are working full-time or are enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation. Situated on the north shore of Lakeland’s scenic Lake Hollingsworth, Florida Southern is home to the world’s largest single-site collection of architecture by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, including the recently refurbished Water Dome. The 100-acre campus also features a number of other outstanding facilities – the 2,500-seat George W. Jenkins Field House (for basketball and volleyball); Barnett Field (for softball and soccer); the 1,800-seat Branscomb Auditorium; 11 residence halls and several College-owned apartments and houses; the Robert A. Davis Performing Arts Center; the Roux Library; and the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center, which includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, recreational facilities, and an NCAA competition-size outdoor swimming pool. The College recently opened the new Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Technology Center, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Rinker building is equipped with the latest technology and Wi-Fi, as are other computer labs on campus, such as the popular new TûTû’s Cyber Café in the library. The Sarah D. and L. Kirk McKay, Jr., Archives Center, adjacent to the Roux Library, houses records from the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church; Frank Lloyd Wright drawings and documents; the Lawton M. Chiles Center for Florida History; and the Florida Citrus Archives. There are several new academic buildings on campus, including the state-of-the-art Joe K. and Alberta Blanton Nursing Building, home to the College’s growing School of Nursing; and the Dr. Marcene H. and Robert E. Christoverson Humanities Building, which features contemporary classrooms, a modern language lab, film studies center, and art gallery. With Lakeland’s population at more than 94,000, Florida Southern is in the heart of central Florida and is only about an hour’s drive from the major metropolitan areas of Tampa and Orlando. Such well-known attractions as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, Sea World, Busch Gardens and some of the world’s most popular beaches are only a short drive from campus. Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers make Lakeland their annual spring training home, and several other big league teams train in the nearby area. Money magazine has ranked Lakeland among the top “Best Places To Live” for medium-sized Southern cities. The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957. 2

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, Dr. Anne Kerr’s visionary leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically— in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus (the Water Dome, Esplanades, and Annie Pfeiffer Chapel) and the construction (Fall 2010) of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a campus

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics Now in his third year (2010-11) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy considerable success in 2009-10. The men’s golf team captured its 12th NCAA national title and the school’s 27th, while the women’s golf team finished third. Swimmer Jeb Halfacre won the 200-yard backstroke at the NCA A championship, giv ing FSC its first individual national champion in swimming. NCAA postseason bids went to women’s soccer, golf and tennis and men’s cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball. Both swimming teams and the women’s cross country team had individual NCAA qualifiers. FSC won SSC titles in men’s cross country (13th straight), men’s basketball and men’s golf. All of that success combined to give the Moccasins a 23rd-place finish in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports/NACDA Cup standings and their ninth top 25 finish in the program’s history. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean 3

Visitor Center, which will be the first Wright design built since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Mid-Florida, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Presently, she is completing a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a sixteen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011). of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. He also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams went 39-30 in two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A fouryear baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 22-year old Ross and 20-year old Mitchell, both of whom are enrolled at FSC, and 19-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

MEET THE MOCCASINS Duncan Sherrard Head Coach In his first full season (2009-10) as head coach, Duncan Sherrard guided the Moccasins to their most successful season in the program’s seven-year history. For the first time since the program began in 2003, FSC qualified eight individuals for the NCAA Division II Championship and came home with the program’s first-ever national champion when Jeb Halfacre captured the 200yard backstroke. At the NCAA meet the men scored 114 points and placed 14th, while the women scored eight points and tied for 34th en route to producing 24 All-America awards. Five Moccasin individuals and the women’s team also received Scholar All-America recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. While the Moccasins did not win either the men’s or women’s championship in the 2010 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship, their improvement from the previous year (women went from 12th to fourth, men went from 11th to fifth) was significant enough that Sherrard was voted BGMC Women’s Coach of the Year and Men’s Co-Coach of the Year. The teams combined to set a total of 22 school records in the BGMC meet. A 14-time All-American swimmer and three-time Southeastern Conference champion at the University of Florida, Sherrard began his duties at FSC on Jan. 19, 2009, joining the program in mid-season. Sherrard came to Florida Southern from junior college swimming power Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, where he had been the assistant coach for two seasons, helping Indian River extend its string of national junior college championships. In Sherrard’s two seasons, Indian River extended its streak of men’s national junior college swimming titles to 34 consecutive years and the women’s national title streak to 26 consecutive years. A four-year letterman (1998-2002) for the Gators, Sherrard still ranks in the top ten in seven events at his alma mater, including UF’s second-best 200-yard butterfly time of 1:43.18. “We are extremely excited to have someone with Duncan’s character and background take over our swimming program,” said FSC Athletics Director Pete Meyer at the time of Sherrard’s hiring. “He was a highly-talented swimmer himself and he’s coming from the top junior college swimming program in the country, so we feel confident he will make our swimming program competitive on a national level.” “Florida Southern always has had a strong tradition of excellence in its athletics program and I’d like to bring that kind of tradition to the swimming program,” Sherrard said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of building Florida Southern’s swimming program into a highlyvisible part of its outstanding athletics program.” Following his standout career at Florida, where he was team captain as a senior, Sherrard began his coaching career as an assistant at Buchholz High School in Gainesville in 2003. The following year he became head coach and guided the Buchholz girls’ team to a 3A state

runner-up finish in 2004 and the 3A state championship in 2005. He was named the 3A Girls Swimming Coach of the Year in 2005. From Buchholz he went to Indian River, where he helped produce 39 national champions in the 2006-07 season and 37 in the 2007-08 season. In that two-year span, Indian River swimmers set 32 national junior college records. A Polk County native, Sherrard graduated from Bartow High School, where he was a two-time team captain and was state runnerup in the 100-yard butterfly and placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at the 1997 4A state championship. He also holds the Polk County record in the 100-yard butterfly. He received his bachelor’s degree in history in 2002 from the University of Florida. In addition to his Florida Southern coaching duties, Sherrard coaches the Lakeland Area Swim program for competitive juniors. The program brought in 55 swimmers this past summer and produced one Junior Olympic state champion. Sixteen of the program’s swimmers qualified for the U.S. Swimming Area 3 and 5 championships. Sherrard and his wife, Diane, who was a six-time All-American swimmer at Florida, have a three-year-old daughter, Reagan, and a year-and-a-half-old son, Nathan.

Halfacre Gives Mocs Their First National Champion in Swimming March 13, 2010 Jeb Halfacre gave the Moccasins their first individual national champion in swimming Saturday by winning the 200-yard backstroke event in a school-record time of 1:46.71. Halfacre, a redshirt freshman who transferred to FSC from the University of Florida, had barely missed winning a national title Friday night, finishing as the runnerup in the 100-yard backstroke by less than a second behind the event winner. The win by Halfacre gave the Moccasins 20 points. Miguel Ferreira added 11 points with an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke and the Moccasins picked up six points in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, from the team of Halfacre, Ferreira, Bruce Janzen and Alex Peterson. In their first-ever appearance at the Division II Championships, the Moccasins finished in 14th place with 114 points.

Florida Southern finished in second place in both the men’s and women’s divisions for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor’s Cup for all-sports competition for the 20090-10 academic year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor’s Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and eight sports for women: basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2009-10 academic year marked the 24th year of the Mayor’s Cup competition. FSC has won the men’s division 11 times and also won the women’s division 10 times. Moccasin Athletic Training Services Every student-athlete at Florida Southern College is entitled to quality medical care while participating as a member of an athletic team. The athletic training/medical staff coordinates and delivers professional and comprehensive preventive care, treatment, rehabilitation and counseling services to all FSC student-athletes. The goal of athletic training services is to keep each student-athlete healthy and injury free. In the case of injury or illness, the staff will provide quality medical care enabling the student-athlete to return to participation both as a student and an athlete. The athletic training staff is comprised of four full-time nationally-certified and state-licensed athletic trainers. Florida Southern College also has an athletic training education program. Athletic training students from the program assist the staff athletic trainers in daily operations of the athletic training facility. The athletic training facility is located in Jenkins Field House. The facility is well equipped to provide treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The FSC sports medicine team is comprised of two orthopedic team physicians and consulting physicians in several specialties. All of these professionals work together to meet the student-athlete’s health care needs.

Al Green MA, ATC, LAT, EMT

Al Green was named assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer in July 2007. In September of 2010, he received a promotion to associate athletic director while maintaining his role as head athletic trainer. Prior to joining Florida Southern College, Green was the general manager and athletic trainer for the Lakeland Thunderbolts, an indoor professional football team. He served as the director of marketing and business development and coordinator of athletic training services for Healthcare Management Systems (HMS), a Lakeland-based company. The former head athletic trainer and athletic administrator at the University of Kentucky, he has served in various capacities for the athletic training profession at the state, district and national levels. Green serves as the chairperson for the National Athletic Trainers Association Public Relations Committee. He was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2004. He also serves the community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Polk County Fire Department. Green is married to Sue Stanley-Green, FSC athletic training educational program director and also an NATA Hall of Fame member. They have one daughter, Logan. Green has three older children, Douglas, Jennifer and Tracy.

Kelly Cox MA, ATC, LAT

Kelly Cox came to Florida Southern College in 2008 from the University of South Florida where she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Big East Champion women’s softball team and the football team. She also completed an internship with the University of South Florida’s football team in the fall of 2005 after graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a specialization in Athletic Training and a minor in Health Science Education. While at the University of Florida she worked with the football, women’s soccer, and swimming and diving teams, as well as with local high school teams and at Shands Orthopedic Institute. During her time at USF she received her Master’s degree in Exercise Science through the Physical Education Department. Cox is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC physical education department.

Meghan Fornoff MS, ATC

Meghan Fornoff is in her first year as a member of the Florida Southern Athletic Training Staff. For the past two years she has been an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Florida, working primarily with football and women’s golf. Prior to that she served two years as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at UF. She received her bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation science in 2006 from the University of Pittsburgh. In May of 2008 she received her master’s degree in applied physiology and kinesiology from the University of Florida. She is a certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Kevin McCarthy MAT, ATC

Kevin McCarthy joined the Florida Southern Athletic Training staff in the Summer of 2010. McCarthy received his master’s degree in athletic training from Texas Tech Universitiy this past spring. A certified athletic trainer, he received his bachelor’s degree in pre-physical therapy from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. His athletic training experience includes working with the Seattle Mariners’ minor league teams and at South Plains Junior College in Levelland, Texas.

NATIONAL CHAMPION Jeb Halfacre 200-yd. Backstroke FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE 2010-11 SWIMMING SCHEDULE

At the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship Jeb Halfacre captured Florida Southernâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first-ever national champioship in swimming by winning the 200-yard backstroke. Halfacre set a school record in the event with a time of 1:46.71. The day before, the red-shirt freshman barely missed a national title, finishing one second behind the event winner in the 100-yard backstroke.
