Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”

The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center houses a fullsized basketball court, weight and aerobic rooms, and a student lounge and is adjacent to an NCAA regulation size swimming pool.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun... the college of tomorrow.” 3

as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. Jarrod Olson HEAD COACH • FOURTH SEASON For the third straight season, there was improvement in the Florida Southern women’s basketball program under head coach Jarrod Olson. After an 11-17 rookie season, Olson guided the Lady Mocs to a 15-13 record in 2007-08 and improved that to 18-10 in 2008-09. His three-year record at Florida Southern is 44-40. His overall head coaching record for five seasons is 67-75. Olson was hired at Florida Southern in June of 2006 after serving as an assistant women’s coach at NCAA Division I Creighton for four seasons. The Moccasins have produced the Sunshine State Conference Women’s Freshman of the Year in each of Olson’s three seasons. Nicolle DiRaimo earned the award for the 2006-07 season. Chelsea Johnson was the recipient in 2007-08 and Megan Dzikas received the award for 2008-09. In Olson’s two previous head coaching positions improvement also came quickly. In the summer of 2005 he coached the Otago Breakers of the Women’s National Basketball League in Dunedin, New Zealand. The Breakers had finished in last place the previous season, but Olson helped lead the team to a second-place finish and a 9-3 record. For his efforts he was named WNBL Coach-of- the-Year. Olson also built the program at College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb. He was hired in 2000 as the third coach in the third year of the program. In his first campaign, the team began the season with just seven players, two of which had been student managers the year before. The team finished 5-20, but did beat the fifth-ranked team in the country, College of the Ozarks, which was the first win against a ranked opponent in school history. The following year Olson’s team had a complete turnaround. Operating with a full roster, the team finished in second place in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference with an 18-15 record. It was a 13-game improvement on the previous season, but more importantly, he helped establish the program and prepare it for future success. Olson would not see the future success of the program first hand, however. After two seasons as a head coach, he began a four-year stint

Fourth-year head coach Jarrod Olson guided the Moccasins to an 18-10 record in 2008-09, marking the second straight season the club has increased its win total.

at Creighton University as an assistant coach for the women’s team. Olson helped guide the team to a 75-49 record that included a pair of 24-win seasons. In 2004 the Bluejays won the Women’s National Invitation Tournament and during Olson’s tenure the team finished first or second in the Missouri Valley Conference three times. Olson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the women’s team at Emporia State (Kan.) in 1997-98. Emporia State was 33-1 and NCAA Division II runner-up that season under Cindy Stein, now the head women’s coach at the University of Missouri. Before taking the job at College of Saint Mary, Olson was an assistant men’s basketball coach for one year at Millard South High School in Omaha and an assistant men’s basketball coach at Bellevue (Neb.) University for one season. Olson also has had great success in developing players. For the Otago Breakers he coached two players who made 1st-team all-WNBL,

including Laura Spanheimer, who was named guard-of- the-year. At Creighton he helped coach six players who earned all-conference honors in the Missouri Valley Conference. At the College of Saint Mary he coached two players who received all-conference honors, including Erin Corrigan, who was named player-of-the-year for the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. While at Emporia State, he helped coach four players who received Division II All-America honors. As a player, Olson earned NAIA All-America recognition at Doane College in Crete, Neb., where he still ranks fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 2,018 career points. He also played briefly with the Queens Graduates basketball club in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and with the Sonics basketball club in Dunedin, New Zealand. In high school he was an all-state basketball player at Millard South High School in 1993 and played on the state championship team in 1991. Olson comes from a family with a rich basketball tradition. His father, Rich, has won three state championships as a high school girls’ coach in Nebraska, while his brother, Drew, is the head women’s basketball coach at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. Olson was married in 2003 to the former Amy Rollman. She is a former college basketball player and served as an assistant coach with her husband for the Otago Breakers. She currently works at Pediatric Therapy Services as an occupational therapist in Lakeland.

Residence Life at Florida Southern

Over 1100 of our students live on campus in one of 11 residence halls. Three residence halls are geared for first-year students while all Greek organizations are centered in the Publix Commons area.

PUBLIX COMMONS & GREEK VILLAGE

A grouping of three residence halls, the Publix Commons are close to just about everything on the Florida Southern campus. All three buildings offer suitestyle living in which six students each have their own rooms and share a living area and bathroom. The Publix Commons also is home to Florida Southern’s Greek organizations.

BARNETT RESIDENTIAL LIFE CENTER

Nicholas Hall (at right) opened this past fall joining its “twin” Wesley Hall which opened in the fall of 2008. The new residence halls comprise the Barnett Residential Life Center. The two buildings each include 195 bedrooms with views of Lake Hollingsworth, meeting rooms, student lounges, kitchens, and study spaces.

JOSEPH-REYNOLDS HALL As one of the four original buildings on the FSC campus, Joseph-Reynolds Hall (“JR”) offers one of the best views on campus. It sits atop a hill overlooking Lake Hollingsworth. Community life is big here—the women of JR form groups within the building as a whole and also within the “wings” and smaller hallways. JR and its companion hall, Spivey, are located in the center of campus between Edge Hall and Ordway and serve mainly as first-year female residence halls.

Pumping Iron The Moccasin athletes work out in the varsity weight room that is for student-athletes. The room features free weights and brand new squat and bench press stations. Student-athletes follow a year-round tailored strength program that stresses core body, injury prevention and increasing explosiveness on the court. All FSC students are welcome to use the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center’s weight room.

Get fit at the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center The Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center officially opened in 1997, as the result of a 4.1 million dollar gift from Board of Trustee member Marjorie Hollis Roberts. The Florida Southern College Wellness Program is designed to promote the full potential of each student by encouraging a holistic lifestyle focused on health, fitness and recreation. Last year alone the Wellness Center had over 65,000 participants in aquatics, fitness, group exercise classes, intramural sports, and outdoor recreational programs. The program collaborates with other departments to promote fun and exciting campus activities. In addition, there are dynamic programs on alcohol and drug education, smoking cessation, eating disorders, HIV/AIDS education and healthy lifestyles.

GEORGE W. JENKINS FIELD HOUSE Florida Southern’s field house, named for Publix Super Markets founder George W. Jenkins, opened its doors on Dec. 3, 1966. Built to complement the campus’s surrounding Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, the facility has a main floor providing for three basketball courts. Seating capacity is approximately 2,500. A basement section houses lockerrooms, a training room, equipment room, varsity weight room, physical education offices and storage areas. Recents additions have included a conference room, additional women’s lockerrooms and the FSC athletics offices. Jenkins Field House is one of the largest buildings on the FSC campus, covering 40,000 square feet. The facility was constructed utilizing the steel framework of three B-47 bomber hangars from nearby MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The field house has been the site of numerous NCAA regional and quarterfinal basketball games. In 1983 it served as the site for the NCAA Div. II Women’s Volleyball Championship. In 2003-04 it served as the site of the Sunshine State Conference men’s and women’s postseason basketball tournaments. Florida Southern’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the field house for Jenkins, president of Publix Super Markets, Inc., in appreciation of his generous support of the college, both as a benefactor and a friend. Jenkins’ relationship with Florida Southern started in 1956, when he served as the school’s honorary chancellor, an honor reserved for prominent men and women in various walks of life. In 1957 Florida Southern awarded him an honorary doctorate degree, calling him one of Lakeland’s outstanding citizens and “a leader of Florida in the support of humanitarian causes, education and community progress.” He was posthumously inducted into inaugural class of the FSC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
