Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”
The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.
The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.
Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.
Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.
Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M.
Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.
Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957. In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment as Florida
Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, Dr. Anne Kerr’s visionary leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a national model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus and the construction of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a Tourism and Education Center, which will be the first Wright design
Florida Southern College built since 1966. Other new construction includes the twobuilding Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a seventeen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011).
The Christoverson Humanities Building, which opened Fall 2011, is the latest of the numerous additions to the campus under the leadership of President Kerr. A Tourism & Education Center, based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is currently under construction.

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics Now in his fourth year (201112) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy another successful year in 2010-11. The women’s golf team finished third at the NCAA Division II Championship. The swimming team claimed four individual event NCAA championships (Mary O’Sullivan – 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke and men’s 400-yard medley relay team). Twelve of FSC’s programs participated in NCAA postseason competition. FSC won Sunshine State Conference titles in men’s cross country (14th straight) and women’s basketball (regular season and postseason tournament), won the SSC women’s Mayor’s Cup Award and tied for second in the men’s Mayors’ Cup. That success combined to give the Moccasins a 19th-place finish, tops among SSC schools, in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports/ NACDA Cup standings and their 10th top 25 finish in the program’s history. Meyer also returned to the coaching ranks in 2010-11, taking command of the baseball program 12 games into the season and guiding the Moccasins to a final season record of 32-15. In 2009-10, FSC won its 12th NCAA men’s golf title and 27th national title overall and produced its first national champion in swimming (Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke). Eleven programs were represented in NCAA postseason competition, with men’s golf, basketball and cross country teams capturing SSC titles. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s
2011-12 Women’s Basketball basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. In his previous stint as baseball coach (2002-08), Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern is 282-121-1, while his overall record as a head coach is 321-151-1. Thirty-eight Moccasin baseball players have been drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure as head coach. Before officially assuming the reigns of head baseball coach in June of 2002, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams won Eastern Division titles in the SCAC in each of his two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 198890, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children - 23-year old Ross, 21-year-old Mitchell, who is enrolled at FSC, and 20-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.
As head coach of the Moccasin baseball team, Coach Pete Meyer led FSC to the 2005 NCAA National Championship. It was the ninth national title won by FSC baseball program.

Jarrod Olson HEAD COACH • SIXTH SEASON The Sunshine State Conference Women’s Coach of the Year, Jarrod Olson guided the Moccasins to their best season in nine years last season (2010-11), winning the program’s first Sunshine State Conference regular season title since the 2004-05 season and the first SSC Tournament title since the 2002-03 campaign. The Moccasins’ 26-5 record was the best since an identical mark by the 1995-96 squad. Their 14-2 SSC record was the program’s best since the 14-0 record produced by the 1994-95 team. After suffering only their second SSC loss on Feb. 2, the Moccasins reeled off 11 straight wins that took them through the rest of the regular season, the SSC Tournament and the first round of the NCAA South Regional at Russellville, Ark. Making their first NCAA appearance under Olson and the first since the 2002-03 season, the Moccasins topped Ouachita Baptist 8774 in the first-round contest and were matched against fourth-ranked Delta State in the semifinals. Leading 65-62 with less than three minutes remaining, the Moccasins went cold from the field and saw Delta State come-from-behind to win 72-67. In addition to the SSC titles and NCAA bid, the Moccasins produced the SSC Women’s Player of the Year in Emma Cannon and were named the Polk County Women’s Collegiate Team of the Year. Improvement has been a trademark in the women’s basketball program under Olson. After an 11-17 rookie season, he guided the Lady Mocs to a 15-13 record in 2007-08, improved that to 18-10 in 2008-09 and 19-9 in 2009-10. His five-year record at Florida Southern is 89-54. His overall head coaching record for seven seasons is 112-89. Olson was hired at Florida Southern in June of 2006 after serving as an assistant women’s coach at NCAA Division I Creighton for four seasons. The Moccasins produced the Sunshine State Conference Women’s Freshman of the Year in each of Olson’s three seasons. Nicolle DiRai-

mo earned the award for the 2006-07 season. Chelsea Johnson was the recipient in 2007-08 and Megan Dzikas received the award for 200809. In Olson’s two previous head coaching positions improvement also came quickly. In the summer of 2005 he coached the Otago Breakers of the Women’s National Basketball League in Dunedin, New Zealand. The Breakers had finished in last place the previous season, but Olson helped lead the team to a second-place finish and a 9-3 record. For his efforts he was named WNBL Coach-of- the-Year. Olson also built the program at College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb. He was hired in 2000 as the third coach in the third year of the program. In his first campaign, the team began the season with just seven players, two of which had been student managers the year before. The team finished 5-20, but did beat the fifth-ranked team in the
7
2011-12 Women’s Basketball country, College of the Ozarks, which was the first win against a ranked opponent in school history. The following year Olson’s team had a complete turnaround. Operating with a full roster, the team finished in second place in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference with an 18-15 record. It was a 13-game improvement on the previous season, but more importantly, he helped establish the program and prepare it for future success. Olson would not see the future success of the program first hand, however. After two seasons as a head coach, he began a four-year stint at Creighton University as an assistant coach for the women’s team. Olson helped guide the team to a 75-49 record that included a pair of 24-win seasons. In 2004 the Bluejays won the Women’s National Invitation Tournament and during Olson’s tenure the team finished first or second in the Missouri Valley Conference three times. Olson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the women’s team at Emporia State (Kan.) in 1997-98. Emporia State was 33-1 and NCAA Division II runner-up that season under Cindy Stein, formerly the head women’s coach at the University of Missouri. Before taking the job at College of Saint Mary, Olson was an assistant men’s basketball coach for one year at Millard South High School in Omaha and an assistant men’s basketball coach at Bellevue (Neb.) University for one season. Olson also has had great success in developing players. For the Otago Breakers he coached two players who made first-team all-WNBL, including Laura Spanheimer, who was named guard-of- the-year. At Creighton he helped coach six players who earned all-conference honors in the Missouri Valley Conference. At the College of Saint Mary he coached two players who received all-conference honors, including Erin Corrigan, who was named player-of-the-year for the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. While at Emporia State, he helped coach four players who received Division II All-America honors. As a player, Olson earned NAIA All-America recognition at Doane College in Crete, Neb., where he still ranks fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 2,018 career points. He also played briefly with the Queens Graduates basketball club in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and with the Sonics basketball club in Dunedin, New Zealand. In high school he was an all-state basketball player at Millard South High School in 1993 and played on the state championship team in 1991. Olson comes from a family with a rich basketball tradition. His father, Rich, has won three state championships as a high school girls’ coach in Nebraska, while his brother, Drew, is the head women’s basketball coach at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. Olson was married in 2003 to the former Amy Rollman. She is a former college basketball player and served as an assistant coach with her husband for the Otago Breakers. She currently works at Pediatric Therapy Services as an occupational therapist in Lakeland. The Olsons had their first child, a son (Eamon), born, Oct. 27, 2010.

Defending Champ Lady Mocs Tabbed For Third In SSC Preseason Poll The Moccasins are the defending champions, but Rollins
has been made the favorite to win this year’s Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball title according to the SSC preseason poll of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. The Tars collected nine first-place votes and 175 points to edge Tampa for the top spot in the poll. Voters could not vote for their own team. Tampa received six first-place votes and 170 points. The Moccasins tallied one first-place vote and 142 points. Rollins returns four starters from last season’s 21-8 squad. Coach Jarrod Olson returns senior starters Michaela Hawley and Megan Dzikas, but has to replace last season’s SSC Player of the Year Emma Cannon, four-time All-SSC selection Chelsea Johnson and Tanja Speaker from his 26-5 squad that won the SSC regular season and tournament titles and reached the NCAA South Regional semifinals.

GEORGE W. JENKINS FIELD HOUSE Florida Southern’s basketball facility, named for Publix Super
Markets founder George W. Jenkins, opened its doors on Dec. 3, 1965, with an 89-59 win over Rollins. Built to complement the campus’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, the facility has a main floor providing for three full basketball courts. Seating capacity is approximately 1,800. The FSC volleyball team also plays its home matches here. This past summer (2011) a major renovation took place that provided for new seating, including over 600 chair-back seats, a new sound system, a new press box and a new paint job. Besides the playing courts, the building also houses locker rooms, the athletic training staff offices and training room and an equipment room in the basement section. Previous improvements to the facility had included a conference room, additional women’s locker rooms and the FSC Athletics offices. Adjacent to the main building are a weight room for athletics, offices for the physical education department and storage areas. Jenkins Field House is one of the largest buildings on the FSC campus, covering 40,000 square feet. The facility was constructed utilizing the steel framework of three B-47 bomber hangars from nearby MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The field house has been the site of numerous NCAA regional and quarterfinal basketball games. In 1983 it served as the site for the NCAA Div. II Women’s Volleyball Championship. In 2003-04 it served as the site of the Sunshine State Conference men’s and women’s postseason basketball tournaments. Florida Southern’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the field house for Jenkins, president of Publix Super Markets, Inc., in appreciation of his generous support of the college, both as a benefactor and a friend. Jenkins’ relationship with Florida Southern started in 1956, when he served as the school’s honorary chancellor, an honor reserved for prominent men and women in various walks of life. In 1957 Florida Southern awarded him an honorary doctorate degree, calling him one of Lakeland’s outstanding citizens and “a leader of Florida in the support of humanitarian causes, education and community progress.” He was posthumously inducted into inaugural class of the FSC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

Residence Life at Florida Southern Over 1100 of our students live on campus in one of 11 residence halls. Three residence halls are geared for first-year students while all Greek organizations are centered in the Publix Commons area.
PUBLIX COMMONS & GREEK VILLAGE
A grouping of three residence halls, the Publix Commons are close to just about everything on the Florida Southern campus. All three buildings offer suitestyle living in which six students each have their own rooms and share a living area and bathroom. The Publix Commons also is home to Florida Southern’s Greek organizations.
BARNETT RESIDENTIAL LIFE CENTER
Nicholas Hall (at right) opened this past fall joining its “twin” Wesley Hall which opened in the fall of 2008. The new residence halls comprise the Barnett Residential Life Center. The two buildings each include 195 bedrooms with views of Lake Hollingsworth, meeting rooms, student lounges, kitchens, and study spaces.
JOSEPH-REYNOLDS HALL As one of the four original buildings on the FSC campus, Joseph-Reynolds Hall (“JR”) offers one of the best views on campus. It sits atop a hill overlooking Lake Hollingsworth. Community life is big here—the women of JR form groups within the building as a whole and also within the “wings” and smaller hallways. JR and its companion hall, Spivey, are located in the center of campus between Edge Hall and Ordway and serve mainly as first-year female residence halls.
