editors note This installment of F-Style Chicago Magazine has been yet another great learning experience and achievement which I will share with you. The summer months where very good but it has had its ups and downs. This is the industry way of the Urbane Life. Things will not always go as planned and you will surely have some great successes but you will have some set backs. This is the nature of life which you can not run from. Instead you should run to it for it helps you to truly grow and develop. This is what gives you the staying power, the discipline and allows you to understand order and structure if it has not been taught to you or practiced. In order to reach your next levels of what you define as success it must be. I can list many examples of the prettiest models, the best talent, the right person for the job of greatness to happen but because these individuals where not disciplined, they had no understanding of plans and how to weather storms they choose their set backs. This has happened to many and myself included, but as you get old and go through your storms you should always take away from it the lessons of time and wisdom that they have blessed you with to make your stronger for your future day. Many of the people which you see in these pages that have been featured are the testimony of what I speak. Each one has their individual struggles but they pressed through and have made their steps towards their definitions of success. I am so honored to have worked with so many great people and show many that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE if you have focus, a plan and understand your vision is only produced with the help and passion of other like minded souls. If you do not know your plan you will not most likely use the 24hours you have been blessed with each day effectively and will not full know and cherish and understand the people who are in your life to help you build. So I say the choice is yours and with this issue. I have brought YOU my readers, friends and family more people who you can see and be familiar with and be inspired to move and press towards your personal victories just as they have done.

Beyond the Lens
by Rebecca Jones
The Reflection She believed them. They told her that she was nobody and she believed them. She accepted what others said at face value because she no longer knew who she was. She did not undertand the definition of love, beauty and virtue because they hid them from her. She had become as a woman undone; a woman whose pieces were scattered abroad; a woman who had no concept of what it meant to be whole within.
15/F-STYLE CHICAGO
16/F-STYLE CHICAGO
When she looked in the mirror, she did not see her own reflection but she saw image they saw and she became afraid. She was afraid of not knowing who she was so she began giving herself away to others in hope of gaining an identity. In giving she sought to gain love and affection but instead gained heartaches and disappointments. She sought to gain acceptance and respect but instead gained brokeness and rejection. So she continued to give. But the the more she gave the less she had until there was nothing left for her to give. And there she stood; fragmented and broken into pieces for she had reached her end, she had given all of herself to others. It was then that she began to realize that it was she who allowed herself to be devalued and shamed. It was she who allowed her virtue to leave and her beauty to be hidden from her. She had become so afraid of not being loved and aceped that she let others make her into something that she was not. She accepted who they said she was and not the woman who she knew she was within. She was so use to looking at herself through the eyes of others that she could not see her own reflection in the mirror.
17/F-STYLE CHICAGO
18/F-STYLE CHICAGO
She then understood that as long as she kept giving herself away to others that they would continue to take thus leaving her with nothing to give herself. And so she decided that day to give herself the love she sought from others and accept the woman that she was on the inside. She knew that she was worth more to herself whole than to someone else broken. She stood in the mirror and finally opened her eyes. When she looked at her own reflection, the image that she saw standing before her was that of pure beauty; a priceless masterpiece. She believed in her own reflection that day. She believed that she reflected a woman of virtue filled with self love.

There has never been a better time to go green. Chicago has been historic in its efforts to be green conscious, currently there are more earth- friendly tools, resources, products, fashion concepts and passionate organizations than ever before. Living green does not have to involve lots of sacrifice. In fact, a quest to green your lifestyle can be exciting, adventurous, and fun. But, green may not be exactly what you think it is. There is a new collective consciousness on this horizon: one that has shaped a different definition of “Green.” What is this new green? It’s all about respecting and caring for the planet PLUS caring for our own health by reducing the amount of harmful chemicals that enter our bodies and our waterways. Going green is good for longevity of all parties involved. The best part, given our turbulent economic times, is that going green is affordable and depending on the right investor very lucrative. In fact, in most cases making your life more earthfriendly will absolutely save you money and make you money in the long run if you have the knowledge applied with the financial wisdom. Who doesn’t want to save and make some green? Aquaponics This is not going to be a fun and easy subject for most of you to handle but it must be discussed. When we look at the health of our communities many of us have been programmed to by our food from the grocery store, I know it easy, quick and there are lot of variety, bright colors, designer packaging, great pictures all designed to entice and trigger that connection in our minds to tickle our stomachs. When you do the research, when you look at the news, look at the long term effects of how all these wonderful packaging techniques use to trick you is doing to your beautiful body Anything mass produced for consumers you have to realize that there might be something not very healthy for you. There fore I offer this for your health tip for this issue. I believe fully in the saying don’t give a man a fish a day but teach a man how to fish. So let us talk about AQUAPONICS! Once you learn about this and apply it to your life you will not only be saving money in your household, but you will have a tool that can be used in your family for children chores and family bonding, as you teach them how to be healthy as well as saving money. And for some who are smart can even start a business with this knowledge and help feed your communities with healthy GMO free produce.
Aquaponics is a hybrid of two disciplines – hydroponics, or growing plants without the use of soil; and aquaculture, or fish farming. Aquaponics brings the two together, solving common problems with each type of system. The wonderful thing about Aquaponics is that almost anyone can participate and get to grow some clean, healthy vegetables and fish. Some of the plants you can find growing in the Aquaponics gardens are basil, strawberries, chives, mustard greens, and many more. Very small desk and bench top type systems, back garden systems are most often built by the householder themselves as a DIY project. There are literally thousands of websites that can show you how to set up a small workable open-source aquaponics system for free. Here is one website to go to as you make plans to either build your own aquaponics system or just to learn more. In Chicago our City College Chicago State has free. For tour requests or more information, please email epratt@ csu.edu, amaselli@csu.edu, or call 773-437-3952 The fish There are many kinds of fish that can be used with aquaponics, however the fish used must be freshwater. It is possible to create a saltwater aquaponics system and raise fish such as cod or sole, but the choice of plants you can use to filter the water is severely limited. Tilapia are by far the most popular for at home and hobby set ups because they can tolerate a wider range of temperatures than other fish such as catfish which require warm water. Tilapia also grow to an edible size quickly and reproduce easily. if you are interested in Aquaponics but do not want to raise fish to eat, koi or gold fish are popular choices. They do not require very warm water, and make lovely addi-

Belly Fat Do’s and Don’ts
When you start a workout routine or new diet, you may want to lose weight or be in better shape, but there is one thing that is guaranteed – you want to have a flat stomach. A flat/tight stomach is a clear sign to the world that you are in shape and fit, and we all know that one of the most unattractive qualities on any body is a big mid-section! So Trey, Mr. Calahan and Nancy (clients) will have all the information that they need to make some changes. Here are some key “Do’s an Don’ts” you can set in place in your routine to ensure that flabby gut is gone forever!
Do: Perform cardio activities consistently that elevate your heart rate. Jumping jacks, stair runs, jumping rope, jog-
ging and swimming are all good activities to participate in. Your goal should be to engage in some cardio 4-5 times a week minimum, with 30 minutes per activity.
Don’t: Don’t indulge in impractical and fast methods to lose belly fat, as you risk reversing your results just as quickly. Moreover, try to maintain consistency in your dietary plans in order to maintain the same toned body.
Do: Eat as many vegetables as you can. If you are eating, then a
vegetable should be somewhere on the plate. Vegetables take up more space in your stomach, and are more easily digested in your system. So this means that you feel full from less calories, and in turn, you will eat less food.
Don’t: Don’t consume too much junk food and deep fried food, as they are the main cause of accumulation of excess fat around the belly. Try to avoid unhealthy choices like fast food hamburgers, pizza and fried meats, as these food are rich in elements that lead to a high rise in cholesterol levels.
Do: Enjoy the process of toning up! Make a game out of it, or
challenge a friend to a tone stomach contest. If you do not enjoy the process, it will become difficult to sustain it. If you constantly tell yourself you hate exercise or you hate vegetables, then you will start to believe it, and the first chance you get, you’ll drop your program and go back to your detrimental old habits.
39/F-STYLE CHICAGO
Don’t: Don’t expect fast results out of exercise! Losing belly fat is not an overnight task. It takes time to
have a toned and flat stomach, and developing a ‘six pack’ is not easily achievable. Have patience until you reach your goals! Siddiqu “The Personal Trainer” is a CPT, motivational speaker, author of Confessions of The Personal

t the very least, that means lots of lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and complex carbohydrates; no processed foods; and minimal white flower and sugar. But when you spend all day confronting challenging mental and physical tasks on a photo shoot day, the brain’s nutritional demands are greater. You produce lots of oxidants in the brain when you’re working. Foods that are high in antioxidants- berries, beans, apples, tea act like flame retardants. And we can not forget about alkaline water. Remember the brain is 70 to 80 percent water and when it’s metabolically active 10 to 12 hours a day, removing metabolic waste from the brain requires optimal hydration. It is suggested to super-hydrate with two cups at the beginning of the day and avoid dehydrators like processed sugary foods, high does of caffeine and soda. Watch out for “ brain fog,” which can be evidence that you need to hydrate. It is said that coffee depletes serotonin, which contributes to a sense of well-being. If you have it on an empty stomach, that quick delivery to the bloodstream leads to more anxiety and stress. It is advise to save the coffee for midafternoon, when your hormonal and neural connections often need the boost.
Eat to win- a meal plan for model winners Start your brain; ensure long- lasting energy Egg white omelet; breakfast burrito on whole grain tortilla; steel cut oatmeal with fruit; smoked salmon on whole grain bread; high fiber muesli with nuts, fruit and yogurt Lunch Fill up with out bogging down Eat a salad with meet or fish ; a wrap with vegetables; sushi; chilli, veggies and grains are packed with antioxidants to fight fatique. Snacks Sustain energy and focus Eat nuts and berries boost omega-3s and antioxidants. For something sweet, stick with citrus fruits. They contain pectin fiber, which helps you use the plant sugars slowly- compared wit the sugar rush you get from candy Dinner Lay the foundation for a good night’s sleep Eat if you’re hungry, have a healthful snack before bed- low glucose levels interfere with sleep. So does alcohol. A better bet chamomile tea, which helps induce sleep as the body cools after drinking

CRISPY MEXICAN CHICKEN WRAPS* 1 cup cooked rice, warm or at room temperature 1 cup cooked, shredded chicken 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 green onion, finely sliced (white and green parts) 1/2 red or green pepper, diced 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped juice of 1 lime 1/2 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 2 cups shredded cheese (I used a combination of monterey jack and sharp cheddar) Sour cream (optional) 6 burrito-sized flour tortillas Mix rice together with chili powder, cumin and garlic salt. Add remaining ingredients except for cheese and sour cream. Sprinkle cheese over tortillas, leaving 1/2-inch border around edges, then arrange chicken and rice mixture down the center of each tortilla. (Optional: on some of the wraps, I dotted the cheese
with about 1-2 tablespoons of reduced fat sour cream before arranging chicken and rice mixture down the center – it made the wraps delightfully creamy.) Roll stuffed tortillas, leaving edges open. Spray the tortillas all over with cooking spray. Heat a large non-stick skillet (or griddle) over medium heat for 1 minute. Arrange 2 wraps, seam-side down, in pan and cook until golden brown and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining wraps. Serve.

odels ask me all of the time if it is better to be a freelance model or to be signed with an agency. The answer is simple but do not take my advice, see for yourself. It is my hope that after reading this article you can make an educated decision about what step to take in your modeling career. The nice thing about having an agency is they will find the jobs for you. They scout out paid opportunities. The nice thing about freelance modeling is you are your own boss and can find countless opportunities to gain experience and exposure. But the downside to freelance modeling is these opportunities are not necessarily paid jobs. There are countless pros and cons to both worlds. Freelance modeling is fantastic to gain exposure. But before you gain exposure as a model, the number one important thing as a model you need to gain is experience. Why? Let me tell you why. Lets say you walk into an agency and they sign you on the spot even though you lack experience. They became your exclusive agent which means you are not allowed to work with other agencies or freelance. You are all excited because this is a big name agency, the best around. Then they send you out to castings and you are not getting booked. An entire year passes and since you are signed exclusive you are not allowed to work with other agents or to gain experience outside of your agency as a freelance model.
68/F-STYLE CHICAGO
A year is wasted. You are not improving. They offer you coaching classes, yet you can’t afford them because they are priced high since they are offered by the best. Therefore, you have now boxed yourself in and sit on the bench with all the other non-working newbies. Why? Because you jumped the gun too fast and were eager to get signed without experience. Truth is, you need to walk into a room like a boss, full of confidence, yet humble with a warm approach to the clients. You need to have the best walk, in fact you need to have several walks under your belt. Reality is, being signed with an agency is NOT the place for practice, it’s the place where prepared winners come to win more. But most models go in as newbies and never see a job, never get booked, and are not allowed to seek other opportunities because they signed exclusive with the agency. Never, ever sign exclusive with an agency that does not have a big name. You must make sure if you are signing exclusive with an agency that not only are you ready as a model but more importantly that the agency is actually reputable and gets girls/guys paid jobs. How do you know if an agency is reputable? First off, they should only take 20% of your earnings as a model. Secondly, they should not be charging you to join or charge astronomical fees to be part of their agency. Furthermore, study the contract before you sign with a lawyer and/or trusted family members. If the agency will not let you review the contract, run, because it’s a scam. You need to know what you are signing before you sign the actual contract because that agency can own you for a very long time. Which leads us into non-exclusive vs exclusive.

Lets discuss being non-exclusive with an agency. Lets say you walk into an agency, audition, and they sign you on as a non-exclusive model. This means you are allowed to work with other agencies that are 69/F-STYLE CHICAGO

Practice Many times in the urbane market there is very little time to shoot on the locations and what is very frustrating for production is to have everything ready to go and the model selected can not deliver the look needed but she or he will be the first to hold out their hands for pictures and payment of a poor performance. This is where a lot of communication barriers come into play and a lot of bad situations develop. From my experience when there is strong posing model, he/she makes EVERYONE excited in production and ready to do their best work and showcase their images to the world.

We always tell the new and emerging models to Practice, Practice, PRACTICE! So here is further instruction on what that means. Also you can always go to my website for more instructional videos to look over to help you as your prepare for your next great shoot. There has always been a common misconception that beautiful models take amazing photographs. But the truth is that, without the right pose and expressive looks that bring out emotions, perfect photographs are hard to obtain. In other words, a face model can really pour on the charm or the harm. Inspiration Simply, these poses are inspired by different emotions and ideas that the models aim at conveying. These feelings and ideas could be anything like; sadness anger joy loneliness fantasy flirting, etc. The essential requirements for conveying the right facial expressions include focus, breathing, and proper
72/F-STYLE CHICAGO
Do You Want to Look Smaller or Larger In Your Photographs? To make yourself look thinner, move your shoulder forward a bit. This makes the clavicle bone more pronounced hence, the neck and hands appear thinner than they really are. When pouting, be subtle and simple to portray a great kissing face on camera. For the best results, always keep the chin slightly down, move the shoulders back to prevent the neck from pressing against the chin. And lastly, keep your eyes
as naturally open as possible and ignore the strobes if you are working in a photography studio. Breathe Although sometimes concentration enhances a good photograph, obvious concentration can distract and often ruin a good photograph as well. Do not hold your breath for a modeling pose; always remember to breathe and appear at ease. Posture Bad posture is an unrecognized flaw in many people. However, for models, posture is a harmful flaw. Always remember to keep your back straight and your shoulders up. Slouching affects the mood of the photograph and enlarges the appearances of your stomach. In addition to your back and shoulders, always remember to flex your stomach muscles. Despite your weight or state of shape, your abdomen will appear more toned if you flex. Limbs Symmetry is officially out in the modeling world. When posing, make sure to differentiate your arms and legs with asymmetrical poses. If you have one arm long and straight by your side, make sure the other arm is bent. Whether a big or small angle, the bend will make the modeling pose look more real, less artificial. Continue the asymmetry to your legs. If one leg is locked straight, give the other leg a casual bend. Camera Although the camera is the ultimate focal point of a modeling photo shoot, great models do not look directly into the camera. To enhance the quality of your photo shoot, look away from the camera with a mix of head and eye poses. Looking off to the right or left side, or tiling your neck to either side can help you avoid direct eye contact with the camera. In many cases, your head and neck can remain stationary in your modeling pose—and your eyes can do all the work. Head and eye positions, coupled with personable facial expressions make for great model poses. Sitting Poses If you are sitting down during your photo shoot—don’t think it’s ok to slack off. In fact, sitting photo shoots require a lot of extra work. If you are sitting down or reclining, it’s important to put your eight on the back of one thigh, rather than distributing your weight equally on both thighs. If you roll one hip up from the ground or surface, shifting your weight will

be simple. This pose results in a slimming effect that you don’t want to miss out on. Cleavage To make sure your best assets shine, there are a few basic guidelines to follow. Based on two distinct poses, a forward lean and a backward lean, any model with any breast size can maximize cleavage. When leaning forward, either bring your arms together at your waist, keep your arms straight at the elbows and clasp your hands together below your waist, or simply cross your arms. When leaning backward, raise your arms about your shoulders and head, keep your arms apart, and always slouch for the best cleavage results. Smile If you have a naturally beautiful smile—show your pearly whites with pride, just not every time. If you smile in each modeling pose, modeling agents will notice your lack of versatility, not your smile. To add variety to your modeling poses, try switching up your smile with a cute frown, a bratty bout, a friendly laugh, or even an edgy scowl. Your facial expressions can make or break your modeling poses. Let your smile show, but make sure to show what else you can do. In addition to these personalized tips for modeling poses, every model should be aware of the basics of posing. There are 4 main types of model poses: lifestyle pose, movement pose, portrait pose, and body pose. Lifestyle The lifestyle pose evokes a sense of everyday living with common body movements and facial expressions. Throughout the day, moments of happiness, love, anger, and hope arise. To succeed at the lifestyle pose, each model must be able to recreate these everyday emotions.
74/F-STYLE CHICAGO
Movement The movement pose captures a specific action, such as running or jumping. Because this pose is most often used for a marketing photo shoot—the model is used to promote a product. Each model must be able to smile and laugh when using the products in the photo shoot. Portrait This modeling pose emphasizes the face of the model—and relies purely on facial features. The model will be in modest makeup and relaxed hair and should pose with a casual, genuine smile. Many portrait photographs are close up and emphasize details of the model’s face. If you are scheduled for a portrait photo shoot, make sure to pay extra attention to your skin and drink at least 8-12 glasses of water a day. Body Full-length photographs require body poses. Models are encouraged to shift weight between hips and make arms and lengths into asymmetrical stances. Although many body poses do not require specific facial expressions, putting your entire body into character during full-length poses helps your body find a natural balance. Keep these insider model posing tips in mind during your next professional model photo shoot to ensure you blow the photographer away. Whether you’re a trained expert or an ambitious beginner, all models have the ability to excel in photo shoots. Focus on your posture, attitude, and facial expressions to succeed beyond your wildest expectations.
Planning A Shoot
75/F-STYLE CHICAGO
A word has to be made about order of shoots and how to prepare for shoots. Many time over the years I have seen time and time again many issues with doing photo shoots. Many have their own perceptions and training on how things should go. I am going to simply offer a easy base and foundation to create a successful shoot. I first we must get order. Do this by coming up with a Theme or Concept. Themes ie a subject of discourse, discussion, meditation, or composition; topic: The need for world peace was the theme of the meeting. Or a concept: can be researched from ad campaigns or images you can research on the internet. This will produce a vision for the guidance of your shoot so you can communicate your desired goal to everyone effectively. This helps to answer the many questions your supporting talent will have with the shoot so they can prepare accordingly or offer extra things to help or move your vision further if desired. Step number two after you have your theme or concept you can go out and get your outfits, contact designers or wardrobe stylist to create your looks. Styling will be a strong part in your equation to really make the image pop or will help govern the type of poses the look will offer. Modeling is like acting and when you have a clear theme or concept everyone involved can play and direct their parts well. Side Note: Most times if you are on a budget it would be a wise choice to visit some thrift stores in different areas to create looks. Most thrift stores 76/F-STYLE CHICAGO

You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. (James 2:22 NIV) Change it Your weight, health, job, marriage, relationships, business, if there is something that you do not like about you...change it. There will always be a reason or excuse as to why we can’t or won’t change something we don’t like about ourselves. We could be waiting on someone else to get right before we make a move or we could be waiting on all the tress to line up vertically on the opposite side of the street before we make any kinds of changes, however, change starts with us. “This is how I am.” “I have been like this all my life.” Just because we have been doing something or been a certain way our whole lives doesn’t make it the right thing to do or way to be. Change starts with us. We cannot change someone else. If we don’t like how much we weight, what is the first step we can take to loose weight? If the job we’re at is not fulfilling to us, what can we do to get us to the place that will allow us to do what we love to do? Many times we wait on others to do for us, what we can do for ourselves. As long as you allow yourself to keep complaining about where you are instead speaking and moving toward where you would like to be, nothing will change but the time and date. God has given you

best advice I would give someone in my industry is to not get overzealous in their efforts to help positively impact the lives of others. This can be perceived as pushy and a cause the student(s) to shut down. I can be found on the website, www.teen-train.org. I also, you can email me at tdwayne@teen-train.org.
This is a short easy book to read and will be a good addition for starters in your planning for home and life structure for your finances. Remember you can not make it, if you can not plan it. If you are a child in debt and want to get out, if you a child preparing for college or to buy your first home, if you are a parent wanting to teach your children how to save money and management money -- this book is a must-read! TORSHANDA DISCOGODDESS: HI TORSHANDA. THANK YOU FOR SHARING A LITTLE OF YOUR TIME TODAY TO DISCUSS WITH US YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY. DISCOGODDESS: THANKS. MY PLEASURE. YOU ARE A HIP HOP ARTIST WITH AN INSPIRATIONAL FLARE. WHAT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE? TORSHANDA: I GREW UP TAKING CARE OF BROTHERS AND SISTERS. I DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TIME FOR MYSELF. I DIDN’T HAVE A ROLE MODEL. I STARTED LISTENING TO WOMEN IN HIP HOP, LIKE QUEEN LATIFAH, M C LYTE. I DIDN’T HAVE A ROLE MODEL. I LOOKED UP TO THEM. I WANT TO BE AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS BY FOLLOWING MY DREAMS AND ENCOURAGING YOUNG WOMEN TO DO THE SAME. I WANT TO INSPIRE MEN TOO – EVERYBODY. IF YOU PUT GOD FIRST, YOU CAN’T GO WRONG. WITH MY MUSIC ITS NOT ALL ABOUT BOOTY SHAKING AND GOING TO THE CLUB (LAUGHING) I PRAISE GOD IN EVERYTHING I DO. EVEN AT A HIP HOP CLUB, I BRING CHURCH WITH ME.
GO IN ORDER TO SPEND MOST OF MY TIME AND ENERGY ON ACHIEVING MY GOALS. AND YOU WILL SUCCEED. TORSHANDA: I HAVE A SONG CALLED, “SOMEBODY LOVES YOU” I HAVE A BEST FRIEND THAT TRIED TO COMMIT SUICIDE. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT. SHE DIDN’T HAVE ANYONE TO LOOK UP TO. SHE TRIED TO KILL HERSELF. SHE CALLED ME BEFORE SHE TRIED TO DO IT AND I TOLD HER I LOVE HER. DON’T EVER THINK NO ONE LOVES YOU. GOD LOVES YOU. I HAD TO TELL HER MY STORY OF WHAT I WENT THROUGH IN LIFE. THEN SHE TOLD ME OK TORSHANDA, I’M NOT GOING TO DO THIS TO MYSELF ANYMORE. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME. AND I WROTE THAT SONG TO LET ANYBODY OUT HERE KNOW THATS CRYING RIGHT NOW OR DOWN RIGHT NOW, DON’T THINK NO ONE LOVES YOU. GOD LOVES YOU AND PEOPLE OUT
AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY SHOW, I LET THE AUDIENCE KNOW I HAVE TO SPREAD GOD’S WORD AND I SAY IF YOU BELIEVE IN HIM THEN YOUR DREAMS WILL COME TRUE. NOW LETS GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!! DISCOGODDESS: (LAUGHING) ALL RIGHT NOW! THAT’S A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO START THE PARTY. TORSHANDA: AND THAT’S MY TESTIMONY. I WANT TO BE IN A SITUATION WHERE I AM LIVING MY DREAMS AND I AM A ROLE MODEL. I LOOK UP TO MYSELF AND PAT MYSELF ON THE BACK AND SAY “YOU’RE DOING IT GIRL” (LAUGHING) DISCOGODDESS: I LOVE THAT. TORSHANDA: THANKS. I FOUND OUT IN LIFE YOU HAVE TO TAKE A JOURNEY. MY JOURNEY CONSISTS OF 3 STEPS: 1. PUT GOD FIRST 2. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO IN LIFE, MAKE SURE IT IS WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO 3. GOING HARD AT IT – DEDICATION. THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME THINGS IN LIFE THAT YOU GONNA HAVE TO LET GO. I USED TO PARTY HARD AND DRINK A LOT BUT I HAD TO LET SOME OF THOSE THINGS

“ YOU JUST
HAVE TO TAKE THE TIME AND TALK TO PEOPLE TO TELL THEM YOUR STORY AND YOUR STUGGLE.”
HERE LOVE TORSHANDA: YOU. YOU JUST HAVE TO TAKE THE TIME AND TALK TO PEOPLE TO TELL THEM YOUR STORY AND YOUR STRUGGLE. BECAUSE THAT’S GONNA HELP YOU GET TO YOUR HAPPINESS. SO I WRITE SONGS ABOUT DAILY TRUE LIFE. THINGS THAT NOT ONLY I GO THROUGH BUT THINGS THAT PEOPLE GO THROUGH EVERYDAY. SOMEBODY LOVES YOU, YES THEY DO. DISCOGODDESS: BEAUTIFUL. SO WHEN DID YOU START DOING THIS? TORSHANDA: I WAS 14 YEARS OLD, BUT I STARTED OFF DOING IT LIKE A HOBBY THEN I SAID OH MY GOD, I CAN REALLY RAP. I START TO MAKE IT INTO A DREAM. I THANK GOD FOR THAT. . TORSHANDA: I WILL BE 30 IN NOVEMBER. DISCOGODDESS: YOU BARELY LOOK 22 TORSHANDA: AAAAHH! THANK YOU. THAT’S A COMPLIMENT DISCOGODDESS: THAT’S BECAUSE YOURE NOT PUTTING 116/F-STYLE CHICAGO
GARBAGE IN YOUR BODY. NO DRUGS, NOT TOO MUCH LIQUOR. TORSHANDA: YEP. YEP. I HAVE A PERSONAL TRAINER. I WORK OUT 3 TIMES A WEEK. MY GUILTY PLEASURE IS CHOCOLATE BUT I HAVE TO KEEP THAT TONED DOWN AND YOU KNOW WHEN YOURE OUT HERE IN THIS INDUSTRY YOU HAVE TO KEEP A CERTAIN IMAGE. I TRY TO EAT IT JUST ONE TIME A WEEK THAT’S ABOUT IT.
DISCOGODDESS: WHAT I REALLY WANT TO KNOW IS WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT YOUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. A LOT OF US STRUGGLE WITH WEIGHT. WHAT TRIGGERED YOU TO LOSE SO MUCH WEIGHT. TORSHANDA: I USED TO WORK AT STARBUCKS IN CHICAGO. AND I WAS THERE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND EVERYDAY DURING BREAK, ME AND MY COWORKERS WOULD EAT DONUTS AND COFFEE. WHEN I STARTED I WAS ABOUT 210LBS AFTER 5 YEARS WORKING THERE, I GOT UP TO 320LBS. ONE DAY I WOKE UP OUT OF MY SLEEP AND I COULDN’T
BREATHE, I’M LIKE THIS HAS TO STOP. YEA THESE COOKIES AND COFFEE TASTE GOOD TO ME BUT I SAID, TORSHANDA DO YOU WANNA KEEP DOING THAT OR DO YOU WANNA DO WHATS RIGHT. SO I HAD TO TAKE CONTROL OF MY LIFE AND MY HEALTH AND GOT A PERSONAL TRAINER. STARTED WORKING OUT 3 DAYS A WEEK AND YEA I WANTED TO GIVE UP SOMETIMES BECAUSE I’M LIKE HELL, WHO WANTS TO KEEP GETTING UP EARLY EVERY MORNING AND WORK OUT. (LAUGHING) DISCOGODDESS: WHAT TIME DO YOU HAVE TO GET UP? TORSHANDA: MY TRAINER CALLS ME AT 7 OCLOCK AND SAY, HEYGET UP NOW, ITS TIME TO GO RUN. AND I DID IT THOUGH. IF ITS DEALING WITH YOUR HEALTH YOU HAVE TO LOVE YOURSELF. YOU HAVE TO GET UP. A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK LOVING YOURSELF MEANS BUYING A PAIR OF SHOES OR GETTING YOUR HAIR DONE. NO! LOVING YOURSELF MEANS TAKING CARE OF YOUR HEALTH.
SO NOW I’M BACK TO MY REGULAR SIZE. I’M BREATHING FINE. . DISCOGODDESS: WHO IS YOUR MUSIC PRODUCER? TORSHANDA: HIS NAME IS LOOG. I BRING AN INSTRUMENTAL TO HIM AND I TELL HIM TO PUT TORSHANDA IN THERE. I SAY I LIKE BASS, DRUMS, GUITAR, PIANO AND HE MAKES GOOD BEATS. HE HEARS WHAT I HAVE TO SAY. DISCOGODDESS: YEA. THAT’S BEAUTIFUL. SO WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS NOW. I KNOW YOU PERFORMED A FEW TIMES ON 1LOVE 1HOUSE TV TORSHANDA: YES. I HAVE DONE SHOWS WITH A RAPPER AND PRODUCER NAME DUBLE R RODRIGUEZ. I PERFORMED AT WONDER BAR ON 710 N. CLARK A FEW TIMES AND I HAVE DONE SHOWS FOR RELL E RELL AT CHICAGO LOUD PACK EVENT ON ONTARIO, DOWNTOWN. HE CALLED ME FOR A PAID GIG SHOW. I PERFORMED AT SPANISH FLY RESTAURANT AND BACK TO 1LOVE 1HOUSE TV. I LOVE PERFORMING ON 1LOVE 1HOUSE. IT’S TRULY BEEN A BLESSING TO ME. DISCOGODDESS: THANK YOU. (LAUGHING) HOW IS IT THAT YOU GET BOOKED FOR THESE EVENTS? TORSHANDA: PEOPLE HEAR MY MUSIC ON SOUNDCLOUD, MY FACEBOOK PAGE, YOUTUBE, YOUR TV SHOW AND REACH OUT TO ME TO PERFORM AT THEIR EVENT. I BE SO HAPPY! I AM BLESSED. WHEN YOU BECOME A HIP HOP ARTIST, YOU KNOW SOME PEOPLE ARE GOING TO LIKE YOUR MUSIC BUT SOME PEOPLE WON’T. BUT I GET CALLS BECAUSE THEY SAY MY MUSIC MOTIVATES PEOPLE. AND THAT’S GOD. TRULY A BLESSING.
LIKE WOW! DISCOGODDESS: NOW YOU’RE GAINING POPULARITY. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THE HATERS? TORSHANDA: I TELL THE HATERS UUUUMM I AM STILL GOING TO TALK ABOUT GOD. I GOT HIM IN ME, GO AHEAD AND GET HIM IN YOU TOO (LAUGHING). YOU CAN’T DENY THAT. YOU PROBABLY HAVE THE DEVIL ON YOUR SHOULDER BUT I GOT GOD. COME ROCK WITH ME AND I’LL PUT GOD ON YOUR SHOULDER TOO. YOU BETTER COME ON WITH IT. I ROCK WITH GOD. DISCOGODDESS: I ADMIRE YOU TORSHANDA. PLEASE EVERYONE LOOK FOR HER MUSIC. FOLLOW THESE LINKS AND I KNOW YOU WILL GROOVE WITH HER.

Industry Tips Things to do during the gig
So you finally booked the gig, and now you are on your way to do the great performance you have been planning for, practicing for and lol yes arguing and debating on for money and terms. BUT WAIT! The work is not over yet, you still have to capitalize on the gig while you are there. There every artist should know that there is a beginning, during and end process to ever gig. So here is just a few tips and pointers to remember for your next gig. We will continue to put out more tips as pointers for artist so write in and let us know some issue you need addressed as you navigate your fame and fortune as we cover you.
1. have a banner with your logo or bands logo hung behind the act, high enough to be easily read by all. You’d be surprised how many people will see and hear your act and never know who you are. A visible banner solves that problem. 2. place “table tents’ with interesting artist/band information ( trivia, song lyrics, etc.) and gig schedules on each table around the club. Use sturdy, postcard stock for best results. 3. set up a visible area for merchandise ( t- shirts, posters, cds, etc) the person ( non- band member) running the merchandising can also oversee the new fan mail list. Be sure there’s plenty of writing instruments and paper on hand or a tablet if possible. 4. have plenty of business cards with a readable contact person’s name and number in the pockets of all group, band members or supportive crew. Distribute them liberally( side note: I found a wonderful artist I wanted to showcase in the publication, but he was such a artist that he put all his information in a way I could not read nor understand to contact him) 5. when you’re on stage, remember to make your show stimulating visually as well as aurally. You’re on display and all your clothing, colors, movements and lines should blend with the music you’re playing. Give the people what they want- a feast of sight and sound. This is an essential part of “ working the crowd” and finally, make sure that you can give a website or a way for your fans to follow you at the end of your performance. Remember most with their camera phones will be recording you so make sure you advertise so they can share it with their friends or if they can not get to you at the end of the performance. Ok this is just a few tips more to come and good luck and see us next issue for more tips and resources to help you maintain and grow your fan base.

M. Appeal—founder of the Diamond Linked Entertainment company—also is riding high on national radio airwaves with her current single, “Steady Calling.” The track, off of her upcoming album, “My Passion,” is proof M. Appeal has arrived musically after a life of struggle, hustle and the tragic loss of her husband and soulmate. To honor her husband’s memory and continue her career trajectory, in 2010, M. Appeal launched Diamond Linked Entertainment and pressed on with writing and recording music. Most recently, M. Appeal performed at the 2010 Rappers Ball at the Regal Theater, promoting the “Stop the Violence” campaign. She also performed a spoken word piece for Link TV called “My Chicago” and was a featured performer at the highly attended African Festival in Chicago’s Washington Park. And this is only the beginning... Her upcoming album, titled “My Passion,” sums up how M. Appeal feels about this music game. So when they talk about entertainers busy schedules and spur of the moment performances, I can truly say that this is a real thing. I wa seeking to work with this young talent for awhile but our schedules never connected until one day Issis called me up and told me she rented a space for a private jam session just for the publicaiton. This was one of my greatest honors to have in this industry. Now you finally get to experience this great talent for yourself and see why I just had to show her love and support.

Have you ever heard music that put your soul right where it needed to be? With the intent to inspire, Camille’s music is filled with life lessons of love and simply ordinary life. So who is she? A Chicago native, Camille has been encircled in music. With her, it’s not all about singing though. She intertwines the melodic language of her piano with her voice. Camille’s music has been depicted as positive and uplifting. “People often share with me how a song brightened their day and gave them just what they needed,”

craft in the beginning? What got you first interested in your industry? I’ve been interested in music since before I can remember. In my youth, my mother and father were heavily involved in Chicago’s hip hop scene as well as my father’s father being apart of an original Chicago based punk rock band called My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. I mostly listened to what my mother played; Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Eric B. and Rakim, Billie Holiday, Sade…you name it. I was also raised by my grandmother, who introduced me to sing-

That concept and those people alone have truly inspired me to do what it is I do. Did you have any mentors helping you as you navigated your
First and foremost my mother, as cliché as it sounds it’s the realeast thing I ever wrote. She molded me into the person I am today and I could not have asked for a better angel to be blessed with. Along with my grandmother, a human who exudes the pinnacle of sincerity. What were some of the most important lessons realized that help to open you to more success? Nothing is personal. Often times you have to put your emotions aside and remember that this is business, you are a business. When you let all your junk distract you from the task at hand it throws your whole plan off. You have to keep your focus and balance or else everything will fall apart.
Also, when you spend your time doing something, you give it your all. Half assed jobs are never complete. Do you have any social causes you stand behind i.e breast cancer, green movement etc? Women, particularly black women, and the state of our society’s general perception on us as a whole. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve logged onto social media and seen countless derogatory statements or photos made about our women. Ignorance and stereotypical behavior is a nuisance and will be the decline of our civilization if we don’t stop letting it eat us alive. In 2013 I founded a blog entitled, BLUSH, for but not limited to not only the equivocation of the sexes, but also highlighting young women in Chicago making positive strides in the city’s art scene. I strongly believe that it is important for women, young and old, to be able to look at an accessible young lady who is just like them and see them doing things bigger than themselves.

What new project do you have coming up? My new and first project, SIGNS, is coming out. This project is very near and dear to me obviously because it is my premier project and also because it exposes me in a completely different way than I’m used to letting such a broad audience see. Anyone that knows me knows my discomfort with vulnerability and this is my way and my story that is finally my own personal revelation as well as my personal statement saying, “Look, I’m ready to put myself and my heart and my anger and my impulsive, erratic behavior all on the table and I hope you feel me because it’s the most genuine I’ve ever been.”

What do you want your legacy in the industry to be? I want the world to know that anything is possible. Change is possible, but you have to know it, you have to really truly feel it. I want people to understand that thought is the most powerful energy that our human forms posses. Once we all understand that we can waste less time with all this negativity and focus on a brighter, more positive future. What is your greatest strength as you see it at this time? My greatest strength is my persistence. I refuse to do any less than what I’m passionate about and what I feel I was put on this earth to do. I can never settle, settling is for normal people and I am the antithesis of normalcy. What do you feel is the greatest misconceptions about what you do in your industry? That one is in it for all the wrong reasons, like most people. But overtime that will change. People will start to see more genuine, up and coming artist especially from this generation. We are the revolution. What do you draw upon for inspiration during the hard times? A couple years ago, a friend’s mother gave me a bookmark during a very dark time in my life saying “This Too Shall Pass.” That saying has faithfully sang it’s melodies in my head since that day. I’d always heard it but never truly understood it until then. When I feel down on myself or helpless, I remember that it is only a moment and I am here to do things bigger than myself, and the phrase, “this too shall pass” resonates in my conscience over and over. Get’s me through my slump every time (with a little help from some of my favorite records). What can you see from your experience that holds a lot of people back in your industry? Lack of self confidence and listening to other people. People still don’t seem to realize that no one knows what’s best for you like you know what’s best for you. You need to believe in yourself and your mission in order to succeed, it’s the only way. What is something that people would be surprise to know about yourself? I have terrible eating habits. Most people when they meet me they always ask me how I stay so thin and how I keep my skin clear and all I can think of is, “youth is on my side accompanied with a fast metabolism.” I’m really trying to focus more

on what I put inside of my body, but right now I could honestly go for some flaming hots with cheese and a grapefruit Jarritos. As I sit and reflect on the honor
and privilege that I have had to work on this history making Fan Short of Marvel Comics “ The Night Thrasher” RAVE feat Eric Lane I have to admit I am overwhelmed. First being a product of the mean streets of the Wild Wild 100’s I never saw shooting like this in this since of the word lol. Movie productions where unheard of let alone a Black Super Hero that was Marvel comics version of THE BATMAN. I only saw these type of productions on Tv. My schools on the south side had no curriculum, for this the stores never sold equipment for this and the corners damn sure did not talk about these production goals and dreams. So when I reflect on this individual that had a similar community upbringing and chose to break the mold I cannot feel anything but honor to bring this great man, director and friend once again to the pages of this publication. I celebrate this man for he shows us of what we all can become when we focus and dedicate our energy to greatness and see beyond the box we are confined in. One day we shall see during black history month movies not of one sliver of time of our people as slaves but see the greatness of our rich history and culture and movies like 300 with all its special effects and great Cinematography being used for productions of history makers such as Akhenaton, Askia
The Great, Almamy Suluku, Ahmed Baba,Yared, Askia, Bello, Sundiata, Imhotep, Menelik lol just a couple of suggestions for those other directors and producers who are reading this. As Lawrence moves into the pages of history of Chicago, he brings to the pages that from very little, greatness can be produced. See his work in Villains a Sci Fi web series and now CHI RAQ which is another history maker with a all black and brown cast! Again Featuring Erica lane and new comer of greatness Jose A Santiago Jr. both these actors are so powerful in their performances that I sometimes really can not believe this great talent is in Chicago! Lawrence helps to show what Chicago actors can really bring to the table of history and not just conforming to the typical story lines that have been given to us by media propaganda. Working along side Lawrence and his productions have been a great honor for me and to meet the quality and caliber of people associated with him to make his productions work is priceless. Now you get to see the beginnings of Greatness for yourself. Enjoy and Support!

7 ways to
Producit Here are seven ways you can further your career, even if you don’t have an agent or manager championing your talent:
1. Create your own work wherever possible. Find like-minded artistic collaborators and put on a play; create a short film; do a web series. Many actors of whom I’m a passionate believer go this route, and I admire them for it. Actors, you will gain the attention of casting directors and other industry professionals if you put together well-crafted, intelligent work. It need not be costly or have tremendous production values. It just needs to be compelling. 2. Read Backstage and other publications geared toward actors and those in the entertainment business. There are many listed auditions for theatrical productions, student films, larger films, etc. An actor need not have representation in order to submit himself. Similarly, the Actors Access website is another valuable tool: Actors can read breakdowns and submit themselves. Be certain your headshot and résumé are as realistically appealing/accurate as possible. The SAG Foundation and the Actors Fund are also excellent resources for actors, as is Playbill.com. 3. Contact student filmmakers and student theater directors and let them know you are available and eager to work with excellent collaborators. There are highly accomplished student films being made—some of which go on to win Student Academy Awards. With my AMPAS colleagues, I participate in the judging of these films every year, and am floored by the high bar they set. 4. Attend EPAs if you’re trained to do theater and are passionate about it. I have auditioned, and subsequently hired, brilliant actors whom I’ve met at these auditions. One sees both represented and unrepresented actors in attendance. 5. Reach out to casting directors, directors, and producers whose work you admire. I can’t empha192/F-STYLE CHICAGO

ivity size enough how a thoughtful, personalized note to those whose work moves you will make an impression. You must be impeccable in your crafting of this kind of note, but if it is sincere, it will make an impact. You may not hear back from everyone, but you will hear back from some of the people you contact. This is a business of relationships. You don’t want to deluge people or hound them, of course, but if you are talented, and truly prepared and hardworking, asking for an audition or a meeting can yield rewards. If you are in a play or have other performance work to show, invite industry colleagues to see your work—especially when you are truly proud of it. 6. Beware of having a chip on your shoulder if you haven’t worked in a while. I often meet actors who, most likely out of fear and insecurity, radiate unhappiness and are eager to launch into a litany of complaints about former agents, why they can’t get an agent, or how they came this close to getting a role. Everyone, of course, can relate to feeling vulnerable and unwanted, but try to let go of bitterness and counterproductive attitudes which can sabotage your chances of getting work now. 7. Be generous about recommending talented friends and colleagues for work, even if there is no work for you. We are all here to extend a hand to each other. It is gratifying to speak generously about another person’s talent. And, chances are, you will be repaid in kind. New York actors are, I’ve found, particularly collegial, always willing to inform others of work opportunities and auditions. Actors, know that the enormous changes in the entertainment business over the past few years have affected each of us. No one can sit back and rely on others to get them work. We all have to create our own opportunities, our own luck. Strengthen your craft as much as you can, and then find ways to showcase your talent. Do monologues and scenes; create a brief reel for yourself. Brainstorm with other actors, writers, directors, and producers. Educate yourselves about material, venues, and opportunities. Become your own best representative. No one will take your career as seriously as you will, so use your intelligence and passion to show yourself off to your best advantage.
