Letter from the Editor

Marcus Fizer Photographer/Publisher F-Style Chicago Magazine

I said this once before, in this industry I have seen soooo much and nothing really surprises me any more but its always crazy how people act and react to things. If we as a industry can refocus our thoughts and energy into actually truly building we have enough talent in this city to have everyone come to us and work on OUR PROJECTS but this hate and mis communication, this chasing after the shinny fools gold of the industry clouds the visions and hearts of the chosen to really manifest greatness and connect with other to build. That is some strong fools gold and its crazy when people get all they want, work hard for it, they get depressed for then they discover its not what it was believed to be then they seek to reconnect with those they stepped on smh lets all do better and seek a greater cause and have them make movies on us as we collectively stop putting $400 to $500 into hair and use that to invest in family and community, stop buying the dub sac for a high moment and give that to a mother or father to help feed the children and teach them a better way to make money. Lets stop turning it up at the club for hours and use that time to have community town hall meeting to stop the governor and mayor from destroying our city.

Lets build our own movie studios and production companies and use our skills and talent to put out our own stories for our children to watch us. Maybe just maybe that would help the haters to stop hating and join in on the movement and start congratulating and encouraging for they now see that when we all create and do things its for the whole community and not just one selfish individual trying to brag about what he or she is doing and watch them eat and floss.

ABOUT THE

BARNES

In our quest to show more

power couples that can be a model for the Urbane community we had to make sure we get the opportunity to introduce you our readers this couple . The BARNES, they are a beautiful husband and wife team and entrepreneurs who together took thier health and business goals to the next level together. F-Style is honored to feature them in our current issue so lets find out more on this greatness came to be.

How do you guys deal with gym flirts as a couple?

We usually do not have too many issues with gym flirts because we are focused on our workouts and each other.

9/F-STYLE CHICAGO

FITNESS What got you started in the health industry? We decided that we needed to change our lives and stop putting a limit on what we could accomplish physically. My husband and I travel frequently(he is a Travel Agent) and we would visit so many beautiful islands and take so many pictures and look at those pictures and think “I wish we were more fit.” So instead of just wishing we decided to do something about it. How long have you been training We had our first consultation with our trainer on 1/12/2015 and we began training the next day on 1/13/3015. What type of music do you listen to , to keep you motivated during your work out sessions? Syn & Tone- I listen to a wide variety anything from R & B to Hip Hop to Blues, Rap, Pop and Rock. Since you been training what is some of the important things you found out about food and nutrients that make a difference in staying fit. One of the most important things we have learned so far is the purpose of eating certain foods, for example Egg Whites and lean meats like Chicken Breasts and Turkey are great sources of protein that your body uses to feed your muscles. Prior to beginning our journey we would hear that we should eat certain foods but we never knew the science as to why. Now that we are learning the science we know when to give our bodies certain foods. When it comes to your relationship and training what are some tips you can give for couples to keep it interesting and motivational to work out together? Being each other’s partner is crucial, we don’t mean we go to the gym together and go our separate ways, you really have to learn how to push your mate. There is an art to learning how to motivate some one. We have both had our days when we really just did not feel like working out, that’s when that push is necessary. Syn- I know that my husband is very competitive by nature and since we are competing in our very first competi10/F-STYLE CHICAGO

tion in November I have reminded him that one some one who will be on stage competing against him is working out while he was sitting down, that usually fires him right up. Tone- Syn is very into fashion and since she has made her goal size known to me I have taken the liberty of purchasing her quite a few outfits in her “goal” size, whenever she is feeling sluggish I just remind her of the dresses or shorts that are hanging in her closet. Do you have any favorite workout tips that you do at home with your spouse? Stretching is very important so at home we stretch together, it’s also a nice opportunity to get close to one another! As a couple how do you think with you two working out together has helped your relationship vs other relationships. Working out has helped our relationship tremendously!! This is something that we both LOVE and being able to do it together increases the amount of quality time we spend together. We have a total of 6 children and I’m sure a lot of married couples can agree that life gets hectic, and it’s not always easy to find time to spend with your spouse. This not only satisfies our need to spend time with each other but it’s also a stress relief. Even if we are slightly annoyed with one another a great workout session gets rid of tension! What are your future goals as a couple that trainers together? Any work out videos, etc? We are actually in the process of recording short

workouts that can be seen on our YouTube page: ToneandSyn. We currently own a Nail Boutique and it is our goal to open a Full Service Spa and we would love to incorporate Fitness into the Spa. How do you guys deal with gym flirts as a couple? We usually do not have too many issues with gym flirts because we are focused on our workouts and each other. Do you have any recommendations for a healthy fit lifestyle for new couples? Set small goals and focus on achieving those, results do not happen overnight so don’t compare your journey to some else’s. Be honest with your spouse and let him/her know how you are feeling. You have to be transparent with one another and keep the lines of communication open and remember that your spouse is here to help you! Remember 11/F-STYLE CHICAGO

REAL TALK MODELS OR PEEPS PREPARING FOR A PHOTOS

SOME TIPS THAT I THINK MAY HELP

TIPS FOR A SAFE AND BEAUTIFUL URBANE MODEL EXPERIENCE Many times photographers

in the Urbane Fashion Community do not really partner up on projects to much usually everyone will be doing their own projects, but one thing we all can agree on from all levels of experience with dealing with the newbies of the industry is that the code of ethics from both the photographer and model have to be understood to have a most pleasureable shooting experience. In our quest to find common ground and create serious real talk conversation with the help of the most talented photographer in the mid west. Mr. Danny Black has joined up to supple some gernal rule to help make the shooing experience for the less

12/F-STYLE CHICAGO

experience talent understand the basic expectations of seasoned photographers. If we all begin to get on the same page as a creative community we really can change the dynamics of the industry. One rule that was not mentioned that must be highlighted is that many young models always ask the photographer for ALL his or her RAW UNEDITED images. Any respecatable seasoned photographer will never agree with this for free or without a very very big budget. There are many copyright issues and also creative licence issues that most models do not think about whne making these request. Thank you Danny for your insight on this issue

1.Stop it with the fake long eyelashes in those shoots, 2. Stop having your hair cover your entire face, 3. Stop moving so much stick a pose wait for the flash or snap then move, 4. again practice practice practice your posing. it takes what 10mintes out your day to practice posing. 5. when you go on location. bring water, towels, a robe, or maybe a long cover. you never know if it’s going to be hot or cold. stop thinking I’m good i don’t need it. 6. you are a walking brand whenever you walk out that house you represent yourself as a model you never know who you may run into 7. In two years i ran into one model who had their comp cards on them when she met me and that was in Texas just recently. she was on it. Had a suitcase full of clothes in her trunk. she was ready for any shoot i could think of! 8. Know your light. if the main light is to the left why are you looking to the right. PLAY YOUR LIGHT! 9. Be ready the night before with everything you need! 10. Please stop posting those three look photos. if you’re not modeling someones line i don’t need to see three joints. just show me one hot one 11. Stop ranting on your page because if i see that i def don’t want to shoot with you because most likely you will rant about me in some way 12. stop burning bridges with photographer after photographers that are good people 13. BE ON TIME!!! if you are booked for 11am that means the shoot starts at 11am not get there at 11am. i know there are problems that occur which is understandable and I always know a woman will be late. however if you were shooting for vogue i guarantee you that you wouldn’t be late 14. MEN MODELS BUY A TAILORED SUIT TO MODEL IN AT LEAST ONE!!! 15. LADIES FIRST TIME SHOOTING WITH SOMEONE ASK CAN YOU BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU ‘NOT YOUR BOYFRIEND’ (i don’t mind but hey i’m different) 16. Feel free to join in the collaboration of the shoot because the team is what make the shoot hot! 17. I know a lot of you want to be signed by agency but ONCE YOU ARE SIGNED IT DOESN’T MEAN YOU STOP HUSTLING IT MEANS THE HUSTLE IS HARDER NOW. DO NOT DEPEND ON THAT AGENCY TO PUSH YOU THAT’S ON YOU. SHOW THEM YOU ARE STILL GRINDING SO THEY

REAL TALK

W

hen it comes to ensuring your love life is happy and healthy, you need to put yourself first. You can’t let someone walk all over you and mess with your head. While decades before may have urged women to grin and bear it, this is 2015 and you don’t have time to smile and let shit roll of your back. You’re worth more than that. You don’t deserve to be banging your head against the wall hoping someone will change, when it’s clearly not in their DNA to do so. It’s time to take a stand. Here are the new relationship rules you need to follow to keep your heart and brain in a good place.

BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP WHILE BUILDING AN EMPIRE By Chasyn Foxx

14/F-STYLE CHICAGO

1.

If he cheats, it’s over. There’s no room for a three-strike rule when it comes to relationships. There is a world full of people who wouldn’t think of doing such a thing, so ditch the one who cheats even once.

that way is dealing with his own insecurities. He needs to work that out on his own; you can’t fix someone else’s issues with himself.

“If he doesn’t support your goals, move on”

2. If he doesn’t support your goals, move on. It’s one thing to be on different pages when it comes to you and your partner’s goals, but it’s another thing if he doesn’t support the direction you’re heading. Relationships are about support, and if he can’t do that, you need to say goodbye. 3. If he doesn’t bring positivity to your life, find someone who will. Being with a killjoy is just going to kill your own sense of self. Don’t stick around for that bullshit.

4. If he doesn’t give a shit, neither should you. A major key that makes relationships work is actually giving a shit about the person you’re with and the relationship you have with them. If your partner can’t do that, why waste your time? Someone else is going to care tenfold. 5. If he doesn’t like your friends and family, it’s a dealbreaker. Your friends and family have been around way longer than this new person in your life. They’ve been through everything with you and they love you unconditionally. If someone else can’t see how important they are to you and can’t learn to love them, it’s a problem. 6. If he makes you feel inferior, hold your head high and walk away. You are not inferior, and anyone who makes you feel

7. If he’s abusive in any way, don’t stand for it. While you may not be able to press charges against someone for verbally abusing you (although you should), if someone physically abuses you, take legal action. Do not try to talk yourself out of it and makes excuses for them. And most importantly, get out of there.

8. Game you have. It’s not easy to find true love, so when it comes your way, don’t be scared to give it your all. Falling in love is always a risk, but if you feel in your heart that this person is worth it, then go for it. 9. If he humiliates you, take your leave. Whether he humiliates you in the presence of others or behind closed doors, that is never OK behavior. 10. If he has substance abuse problems, give him an ultimatum. While it’s important to support someone who may be suffering with addiction, if he doesn’t want to help himself, you can’t do it for him. You can only give so much. He needs to get help or you need to walk away before you give too much of yourself that you’re depleted. There’s nothing wrong with putting yourself first. 11. If he loves you 100 percent, don’t be afraid to do the same. When you find someone who loves you, supports you emotionally, respects you, and wouldn’t think of hurting you, love him with everything you have. It’s not easy to find true love, so when it comes your way, don’t be scared to give it your all. Falling in love is always a risk, but if you feel in your heart that this person is worth it, then go for it. 15/F-STYLE CHICAGO

We know a lot of times tech is cool to look

at and it can be a great tool to have to make life easier. But we urge you to not only look at the tech we bring to the table as cool but also think about what cool tech you can inevest in for multiple streams of income. In the urbane industry the numbers show that technology is a huge consumer market but with so many in the urbane industry always finding issued with finances think about linking up with friends and family or just other like minded individuals to actually invest in companies that can produce another stream of income instead of always spending your income on liablities and not assets. We are not seeking to tell you what is a good investment opportunity, just think about things not as a consumer all the time but as a investor . Think about how your dollars can be invested to increase instead of always decreasing.

While author Ambrose Okosun was just beginning his life in March of 1973 in Lekki, Nigeria, his parents’ marriage was ending. Left with his grandparents to eke out a living in a small village, Okosun was separated from his mother and was not allowed to see his birth father. From a young age, he was dealt a hard life. In A Boy and His Dream, Okosun shares the struggles he endured and how he strived to overcome those early challenges. From hunger to being ostracized by a polygamist family, he experienced severe poverty while growing up. At the same time, his elders imparted important lessons that Okosun took to heart, including the message that he was in charge of his own destiny. Learning by trial and error and with guidance from God, Okosun tells how he became educated, earned several degrees, and immigrated to the United States. A Boy and His Dream narrates the story of a man who has come a long way from being an abused little boy in Nigeria.

Tell us how and why did you get started in the industry? The first time I ever modeled, was when I was 5 or 6 years old. My mother took me to a casting call, and they told me “ You’re a little too short for runway modeling, but you would be great for print and commercial.” At the time, I had no idea what they meant by that. However, I know had a great time at the casting call. I loved all of the flashing lights, and the people telling me “Great job!”, “She’s so adorable!” Etc. After that, I did not enter the modeling world again until I was in high school, to help out a friend for his final photography project. We had a fun time, and he told me I should really get into the modeling world. I laughed at him. No way could I be a model. “Look at me.” I said. Do you have any mentors in the industry to help you? if so who and what gold advise have they provided you to help you? Lynae Tucker has been my mentor over the last 8 months. While competing for the title of Miss Illinois United State 2015, she was not only my pageant coach, but she became my personal private modeling mentor, and one of my best friends. She always made me aware of local casting calls that fit my descriptions, and showed up to every runway event I got casted for. She would critique me about my walk, my turns, my pivots, etc that helped me understand what I needed to work on. The best advise I’ve ever received from her was when she sent me a link to a casting call that was looking for modes 5’9 and up. I told her I wouldn’t waste my time, because I’m only 5’4. She told me (with a very serious face), “It doesn’t matter how tall you are, Chassidy. When you show up to the casting call, and show them the way you walk, they’ll forget how short you are and hire you on the spot. Any tall girl can show up and have a decent walk. But it takes a real dedicated model, to draw all the attention to her, and have a fierce walk, while wearing 6 inch heels.” How long have you been in the industry? I would say I’ve been seriously involved in the modeling industry, since October 2014. I still can’t believe how many opportunities I’ve had over the last 10 months. What have been some initial obstacles in perusing your dream? I’ve been told, “I’m too short” a lot and that there was nothing unique about me. It’s all about perseverance and believing in yourself. What are some of your modeling goals? When it comes to modeling, I always tell everyone that

inquiries, that modeling is more of a hobby to me. I love what I do, but my education is my number one focus. What legacy do you want to have in the industry? My legacy is simple. I want to leave an indent in the modeling industry that simply states; “If she can do it, then so can I.” What are the best Modeling opportunities that you have had in your industry? I’ve had the honor of working with international clothing designers, and being able to appear on a variety of television shows! What are some of the best Modeling opportunities that provide constant and consistent work in your area? The best organization to become involved 33/F-STYLE CHICAGO

with is, Live Out Loud Charity. This charity not only focuses on saving lives through suicide intervention training, and anti- bullying work shops, but provides models SO many opportunities! There are model boot camps held, several fashion shows a year, interviews conducted on television, and even the chance to walk with famous designers at New York Fashion Week. What agencies would you recommend working with? Who wouldn’t want to work with Ford, or BMG? I’m a big fan of local modeling agencies. Kingdom Model Talent Management, Premiere Models, Inc, Chicago Top Models, are great to help get you started! Always do research before signing any type of modeling contract. MMG is amazing too (However, this is the modeling company which I have recently turned down a contract with).

What are some of the most questionable experiences you have had in your career of modeling in your area and what did you learn from it? From a beginners perspective, I was always thrilled when a photographer would contact me and want to do a shoot. However, very quickly, 34/F-STYLE CHICAGO

35/F-STYLE CHICAGO

you begin to realize that some people want to take advantage of you. I remember a few months ago, a photographer wanted to fly me out of state, and pay me $3,000 to do a “high end fashion shoot”. However, after beginning research about him, it was brought to my attention that he was not a professional at all and he always would try and solicit women into doing questionable favor for him. The best thing I have learned, is that if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is. What are some of your most memorable accomplishments in the industry? I volunteered at a fashion show (to help back stage), and was pulled to walk for THREE different international designers. One of the first times I was published in a magazine, has definitely been memorable. What new projects do you have coming up? I have a a lot of new projects coming up within the next few months! Since I am starting school again in the fall, my schedule will be very tight. I have a few surprises up my sleeves :) What do you like to model? Fashion, Swimwear, Artistic, Commerical etc? I LOVE modeling swimwear and fashion. I do not shoot implied or boudoir. if we were to come and shoot in your area where would you suggest the best

36/F-STYLE CHICAGO

place to shoot? Depends on what the agreed upon theme would be. I know of a lot of great abandoned warehouses and factories. What would you tell a young you about the industry and market you are in if you could? I would say, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” My young self would acknowledge

and comprehend what I meant. Especially after being bullied all through middle school and high school

We all have someone that does what we do that we admire. Its okay to watch them to see how and what they are doing that might work for you. Dial yours up or back a notch depending on how you want to come across in your business. Don’t be afraid to copy their strategies for yourself. Conversation with the Director

I

n this industry there are so many talented Directors that really need to be seen in more of our mainstream media. Darryl Kimbrough is one of Chicagos best and we are honored that this busy director had time to stop by and have a very long and very insightful melding of minds, hearts and passion. With all that he and his family have done in the industry he is still the most humblist and passionate directors of Chicago and someone we definatly need to watch and follow.

This current production has been a labor of love because its the first script i ever wrote and completed and i have been through so many disappointments ups and downs and it has just been a 15 year struggle were i almost gave up on my dream. I really didnt have any mentors i just watched a lot of television behind the scenes things that went on in a production enviorrment. I mentor young men and women that want to get into this business on and off the set. What gives me the drive is when i did the first stageplay with my cousins and i saw the works that they put in to make the production a success and when i saw the end result of their hard works 3000 people filing into the theater and the name of the show in lights on the marquee is was blown away. I saw how they worked and everything went like clockwork and i was ALL IN... The struggles i see in Chicago market is that as filmmakers and Directors we really dont get the ssupport from the community and our peers it seems that everyone is out for self to tell the truth. They hey lets do something together but never follow through. If all these Directors get together in a think tank a figure out what we can do to overcome these struggles we we make an serious impact . I would say think outside the box dont be afraid to be original. I would say dont listen to what people say they are going to do watch what they do. What id like to see change in the market is to see more African American Writers and Directors Crew on major motion pictures and get the credit our white counterparts get when some of us have more experience and vision for filmmaking The best way to connect to me on facebook twitter cell or email..

IndieBy DIRECTOR Lawrence Lee Wallace

Hi everyone! Today’s review is on the film/DVD Area 51, a sci-fi, fantasy horror film written and directed by Oren Peli whose credits include Paranormal Activity and Insidious 2. Area 51 is a found footage film about a man who suddenly becomes obsessed with aliens and Area 51 and talks his friends and a stranger who shares his beliefs into breaking into the secret military base. Of course things go wrong and terror ensues. The film is produced by paramount’s Insurge Pictures a fairly new division that creates micro-budget (under 3 million dollar) films so you could, for all purposes call this and indie project because it sure looked like one. I am a big fan of sci-fi and horror and I really don’t have an issue with the found footage genre like many critics do. But the issues with this film went far beyond the normal issues found footage movies are typically plagued with. Very slow moving-There was a lot of set up for this film and weirdness that did not make sense nor added any intensity to the film we were almost halfway through the movie before they actually got to Area 51. 60/F-STYLE CHICAGO

Realism-for a top secret military base with aliens on it, the government sure did a piss poor job at securing it, barely any guards, doors that open right up with no keys and no locks and no camera’s, it was very hard to enjoy the fantasy of this movie when other film include all these things to help bring a certain sense of challenge and realism to the story. Effects-the special effects where cheesy at best, almost out of a horror movie from the 80’s and the monster alien was very fake looking and not scary at all. Actors-One good thing was the acting, it was on point. All the actors were fairly unknown and you could tell they were really doing their best which also bothers me because Hollywood will more than likely blame the failure of this film on not having any “big names” instead of what’s really to blame…poor writing, producing and directing. This film is something I would expect form a director and studio with a budget of about $100,000.00 the film looks as if it’s trying to set up for a series in the same fashion as paranormal activity but I don’t think its strong enough for that. Not even a good time waster. I give the film 1 star out of 5 Lawrence Lee Wallace www.deepproductionstudios.com https://www.facebook.com/deepproductionstudios Twitter-@blacklaw77 Instagram-LLW777

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT

AQUAPONICS A typical aquaponic system features a fish tank connected to an irrigated growbed. Water is circulated back and forth between the two; in the fish tank, fish effluents fertilize the water, while in the growbed these waste products are broken down by nitrogen-fixing bacteria and then absorbed by the plants. Fish fertilize the water for the plants and the plants remove nitrogenous wastes before they can build up to toxic levels for the fish. Aquaponics is more than just a clever way to combine fish and vegetables; scientists believe that it could hold the answers to two of the most significant problems facing the next generation of farmers in America and around the world. The first lies in its water efficiency. Population growth and climate change are projected to make fresh water an increasingly scarce and valuable resource in the coming century. Aquaponic systems are recirculating, meaning that the same water goes through the cycle again and again. This makes aquaponics the most water-efficient farming technique on earth – requiring as little as 5% of the water required for soil-based agriculture.
