F-Styling For Editorial Shoots

C

reating and styling a editorial shoot can be a long and difficult process it you do not coordinate your shoot in order. To many times in the Urbane Fashion Industry, clients want things fast and quick but do not know how to plan for a good shoot. They maybe great at what they do creatively and in business but shoots are a different story. With this in mind here is a simple guide for new clients, models and other industry team members to review to plan out for successful shoots. We will expand on these guidelines more in future publications. First have a vision try to work with the end in mind ask yourself what does should the end process look like- this means create some type of vision board for the final look you want to achieve with the team. Make a story board of the shots and angels you are seeking to get and discuss this with your team. Pay attention and map out the following: -how long will the project possibley take to shoot factoring in hair and make up applications -lighting techniques and set up -color theroies -model posing expresions & emotions you -want to convey -the message of the editorial (storyboarding) how many images are needed to build the story. -textures -backgrounds -style of hair -and finally wardrobe Again this is just a brief overview of the process more to come.

Editor’s Note Your success is only limited by your ability to consistently THINK. Yes, I know that’s not how the saying goes. But the truth is- you need only the faith or belief in yourself to achieve that which you desire. Desire without expectation is simply wishing.

Marcus Fizer Editor-in-Chief

Desire connects you by an pull of expectation to that which you desire. Therefore your success, no matter what area of life you want to transform depends sole upon your ability to think and truly expect to be, do or have that which you desire. For it is the law- God’s law of the universe. It is your right to be happy and free If you can think of it, and then truly believe in it’s possibility, have faith in the impossible probability of it. You will think into reality. The impossible probability + the expectant attitude, is the equation of pushing past those habitual patterns of behavior that tell you to be fearful, tearful and in a state of uncertainty. Remember you are the life you have now and in the future. When you step outside of your comfort zone and dare to believe that you can go from Poor to Rich- Unloved to Loving- Unhappy to Joyful- Failure to Success. You can think into your life the results you want. The results you want are in the moments that you want to quit but your can’t because inside you feel that maybe just maybe this stuff is real and if it is . . . . you don’t want to be on the other side of wishing still wondering what if. In this issue I am very proud to bring a new format a new look as we grow and develop to the next phase of the publication moving into our TV showcase. I thank everyone who have been so patient as we continue to move forward to make a meaningful platform to showcase our talent and develop our crafts for the greater good of our community, homes and individual selves.

BLOW TO THE

Green! Cure

“The US Government has known since 1974 that Cannabis cures Cancer.” 16 f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013

Healthy You T he US Government has known since 1974 that Cannabis cures Cancer.

In ‘72 Richard Nixon wanted a larger budget for his war on drugs. He thought that if he proved Cannabis caused lung cancer like cigarettes do, he would get the support he needed. He gave the Medical College of Virginia 2 years to do a study on the effects of THC on the body. In ‘74 the study was completed. It turns out, THC when ingested in highly concentrated forms (such as eating Cannabis oil) will attack any mutated cells in your body while strengthening and rejuvenating the healthy cells. They found the PERFECT cure for Cancer. It worked fast, it worked well, it worked on many different forms of Cancer in ALL stages and it had ZERO harmful side effects. (Unlike Chemo which deteriorates your entire body and kills 1 in 5 patients. Not only that, but it dissolves ALL forms of tumors and can even combat super-bugs like MRSA.) When Richard Nixon saw the results of the study he was FURIOUS. He threw the entire report in the trash and deemed the study classified. In 1976 President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies, who set out — unsuccessfully — to develop synthetic forms of THC that would deliver all the medical benefits without the “high.”

Moorish Civic & Law We only found out about the study a few years ago thanks to dedicated medical and law professionals who filed Freedom of Information Requests. The Govt lied for many reasons.. One of the main reasons is Pharmaceutical Companies. They spend billions every year lobbying to keep Cannabis illegal because they make TRILLIONS off Cancer drugs and research. They are already well aware that Cannabis cures Cancer. They have a great con going at the moment. Cancer patients and their loved ones will spend their entire life savings or even sell their houses and businesses in order to pay for Chemotherapy and other Cancer treatment drugs. A lot of the time they spend all that money and their loved one dies anyway. If the public found out that the Government has been lying for over 40 years, that MILLIONS of lives could have been saved and that the dying could grow the cure they need in their backyard... The Public would be going APESHIT. PLEASE keep an open mind

about this. I realize it’s hard to believe but I PROMISE YOU, it’s true. If you want to know more, you should Google ‘Cannabis Cures Cancer’. You will see that there are thousands of published scientific studies, articles, books and documentaries on the subject. Id start with the film ‘Run From The Cure’. Its one of my favorites PS: I feel the need to be EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAR here because many people have attacked me for sharing this information. SMOKING CANNABIS DOES NOT CURE CANCER. EATING CANNABIS OIL DOES. There have been A LOT of skeptics about this. I highly suggest you actually RESEARCH THIS SUBJECT rather than demonize the people that have already actually researched it. Cannabis DOES CURE CANCER... This is not a rumor, this is not some internet hoax.. THIS IS A FACT. Every single person I know that’s tried this cure, has successfully cured their cancer. Do you get what I’m saying? I KNOW PEOPLE WHO WOULD NOT BE HERE TODAY IF IT WEREN’T FOR THIS CURE. DO NOT TRY TO TELL ME ITS NOT TRUE. I already know FOR A FACT, that it is. Plenty of people have posted proof in the comments on this post. Check before you doubt!!

FAT FLUSH

WATER I have had several of you ask me about what to eat for losing weight and staying fit. Years ago I was certified as a W.I.T.T.S. personal trainer but I have not practiced in a long time due to my schedule. This is my way of keeping current on health issues that I get all the time from new models. They never know what what to eat on the go when shooting or auditioning or practicing for long hours. Here is something I found that might really help out instead of grabbing that pop or red 40 filled juice. ENJOY!

You should drink at least three 8 oz glasses per day, they say the longer it sits, the better it tastes. You can eat them as well but they are intended as flavoring and still work, so that is a personal choice. The Vitamin C turns fat into fuel, the tangerine increases your sensitivity to insulin, and the cucumber makes you feel full. Try it for 10 days and see what you think! Ingredients per 8 oz serving Water 1 slice grapefruit 1 tangerine ½ cucumber, sliced 2 peppermint leaves Ice – as much as you like Directions Wash grapefruit, tangerine cucumber and peppermint leaves. Slice cucumber, grapefruit and tangerine (or peel). Combine all ingredients (fruits, vegetables, 8 oz water, and ice) into a large pitcher. Stir & Enjoy!

FREE COLLEGE! I read an article last night that talked about Oregon seriously considering making their public universities and colleges free. It’s called the “pay it forward” program. The only stipulation would be that the students would have 3 percent of their postgraduate paychecks deducted for 25 years. And that money would go into the fund to help the next students. Your thoughts?

DID you Know? Inexpensive

Protein!!!

Drinking too much cola may cause excess water to enter the bowels, which in turn leads to diarrhea, and loss of potassium, the researchers said. High amounts of caffeine can also increase urine production and decrease potassium re-absorption, the researchers said. Potassium plays a role in helping a person’s heartbeat, and low levels of potassium may cause heart rhythm problems.

I

have seen so much in the industry becasue I service many clients from many walks of life. More and more I have experience both younger and older models come to the studio with implants. I hear many stories and I see many jobs that are good and many not so good. I had to ask my dear friend/doctor /model LaTanya Morris PA-C about this. We decided to do an article on this so that more models and women in general know not only what to expect but also hopefully after reading this article if you have any further question you can contact LaTanya for more info before you make you decision for the best route to go with what you are seeking to do with your body. I learned a lot looking over this article and I trust you will too.

The BASICS

1.) Breast implants are used for reconstructive purposes following trauma, breast cancer surgery or birth defects as well as for augmentation to increase size and appearance in women not satisfied with their natural size. 2.) FDA has approved both salinefilled and silicon-gel filled breast implants. Though silicon may look and feel the most natural, saline filling is the most commonly used in the U.S. as it was previously thought to be associated with fewer complications and risk.

“No two patients will have the same experience with breast implants

The RISKS 3.) Breast implants DO NOT increase risk of developing breast cancer. In fact, research shows that women with implants have a lower incident of 30 percent reduced risk of breast cancer than women without implants. 4.) Though cancer risk appears decreased, implants obscure 15-50 percent of breast tissue, decreasing full breast visualization and signs early breast cancer detection through mammogram. However, it is still necessary to have imaging done as mortality of breast cancer is still decreased with appropriate screening. 5.) There his potentially a possible association between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a cancer of the immune system. Research is currently underway in linking this rare cancer with breast implants. 6.) Breast implants may impact the ability to breast feed affecting the production of milk. This depends greatly on the location of the incision and placement of the implant above or below the breast muscle. Leakage of the implant into breast milk is also a

f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013 27

possibility and it is unknown at this time how or if this will affect the baby. In SHORT No two patients will have the same experience with breast implants. Breast implants are NOT lifetime devices and more than likely will require additional surgeries at some time in the future for complications such as leakage, rupture, lifting, etc. It is important to communicate with the surgeon about short and long-term risk, warnings, precautions, complications and monitoring of breast implants. I encourage patients to do their own research starting with the Summary of Safety and Effectiveness Data (SSED) when considering augmentation or reconstructive breast implants. Despite any stigma of breast implants, studies show that the majority of women are satisfied with the results of their surgery. LaTanya Morris PA-C

Ingredients You

Never Want to See on Your Nutrition Label.

W

e all know that most of the food in our communities are not good for us, but many of use really do not know why and what effecticts most of this long and short phrased ingreditents are and what they do. Please take a look at this list and really understand what you are putting in your beautiful bodies and realize that for some, if you are constintly sick or have any other issues of health that it just might start with the basic things you go to the cornerstore or even your groucery store to eat that is keeping you in ill health. WHATS IN YOUR FOOD?

f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013 29

This preservative is used to prevent rancidity in foods that contain oils. Unfortunately, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) has been shown to cause cancer i n rats, mice, and hamsters. The reason the FDA hasn’t banned it is largely technical—the cancers all occurred in the rodents’ forestomachs, an organ that humans don’t have. Nevertheless, the study, published in the Japanese Journal of Cancer Research, concluded that BHA was “reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen,” and as far as I’m concerned, that’s reason enough to eliminate it from your diet.

2. Parabens

These synthetic preservatives are used to inhibit mold and yeast in food. The problem is parabens may also disrupt your body’s hormonal balance. A study in Food Chemical Toxicology found that daily ingestion decreased sperm and testosterone production in rats, and parabens have been found present in breast cancer tissues.

3. Partially Hydrogenated Oil

I’ve harped on this before, but it bears repeating: Don’t confuse “0 g trans fat” with being trans fat-free. The FDA allows products to claim zero grams of trans fat as long as they have less than half a gram per serving. That means they can have 0.49 grams per serving and still be labeled a notrans-fat food. Considering that two grams is the absolute most you ought to consume in a day, those fractions can quickly add up. The telltale sign that your snack is soiled with the stuff? Look for partially hydrogenated oil on the ingredient statement. If it’s anywhere on there, then you’re ingesting artery-clogging trans fat. 4. Sodium Nitrite Nitrites and nitrates are used to inhibit botulism-causing bacteria and to maintain processed meats’ pink hues, which is why 30 f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013

5. Caramel Coloring

This additive wouldn’t be dangerous if you made it the old-fashioned way—with water and sugar, on top of a stove. But the food industry follows a different recipe: They treat sugar with ammonia, which can produce some nasty carcinogens. How carcinogenic are these compounds? A Center for Science in the Public Interest report asserted that the high levels of caramel color found in soda account for roughly 15,000 cancers in the U.S. annually. Another good reason to scrap soft drinks? They’re among The 20 Worst Drinks in America.

6. Castoreum

Castoreum is one of the many nebulous “natural ingredients” used to flavor food. Though it isn’t harmful, it is unsettling. Castoreum is a substance made from beavers’ castor sacs, or anal scent glands. These glands produce potent secretions that help the animals mark their territory in the wild. In the food industry, however, 1,000 pounds of the unsavory ingredient are used annually to imbue foods—usually vanilla or raspberry flavored—with a distinctive, musky flavor.

7. Food Dyes

Plenty of fruit-flavored candies and

the FDA allows their use. Unfortunately, once ingested, nitrite can fuse with amino acids (of which meat is a prime source) to form nitrosamines, powerful carcinogenic compounds. Ascorbic and erythorbic acids—essentially vitamin C—have been shown to decrease the risk, and most manufacturers now add one or both to their products, which has helped. Still, the best way to reduce risk is to limit your intake.

sugary cereals don’t contain a single gram of produce, but instead rely on artificial dyes and flavorings to suggest a relationship with nature. Not only do these dyes allow manufacturers to mask the drab colors of heavily processed foods, but certain hues have been linked to more serious ailments. A Journal of Pediatrics study linked Yellow 5 to hyperactivity in children, Canadian researchers found Yellow 6 and Red 40 to be contaminated with known carcinogens, and Red 3 is known to cause tumors. The bottom line? Avoid artificial dyes as much as possible.

8. Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

“A Journal of Pediatrics study linked Yellow 5 to hyperactivity in children”

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, used as a flavor enhancer, is plant protein that has been chemically broken down into amino acids. One of these acids, glutamic acid, can release free glutamate. When this glutamate joins with free sodium in your body, they form monosodium glutamate (MSG), an additive known to cause adverse reactions—headaches, nausea, and weakness, among others—in sensitive individuals. When MSG is added to products directly, the FDA requires manufacturers to disclose its inclusion on the ingredient statement. But when it occurs as a byproduct of hydrolyzed protein, the FDA allows it to go unrecognized. Source: Post via Holistic Dad

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013 61

Paid Modeling

S

o many models always talk abut they want to get paid, but really have no clue of what to ask for or even what type of jobs are available to get paid from. Its very said that most new and old models only think of one type of modeling to get paid from and they put presures and anxities on themseleve to keep up with the industry to sale only one look. I hope this artticle opens your mindset just a bit of the possible earning potential that can be made if successfully planned out. The compensation that you can obtain as a model varies from employment to employment and it also changes as you get more and more jobs. The greater the demand for you, the greater your salary can be and you agent will adjust this price for you as they feel appropriate. Your agent is the best judge of what you can earn and should be earning and they will most definitely be on your side, because they will earn more too. Models can make lots of money and depending on thetype of modelingyou do. Plus size models also earn a lot of money as do male models and body models. For just using your hand or foot, you will get paid a astonishing amount for the day. Let’s glance at each type in more detail: Runway/ramp model - You can earn about$20 000 per show or an hourly rate of anywhere upward from $200. You will also get paid for fittings and rehearsals.

You can earn somewhere from$50 upwards for the day (about 5 hours) Range Showing Model - You will earn asalary based on how many days you workand this amount can be higher than some photographic shoots or ramp work. Lingerie Models - Due to the nature of thistype of modeling, you can earn one and ahalf to twice the amount of regularmodeling fees. For all of the above you can also earn bonuses for traveling, modeling in extreme weather conditions,or in unusual, dangerous places. You are also paidovertime rates if you are on set for longer than thespecified or allowed time period which is normally12 hours for adults and 3-6 hours for children.Other jobs in the modeling industry are those of photographer, hair stylist, makeup artist, andagent. The photographer will earn about the sameas a model by the hour or day of shooting. This is usually anywhere from $200 upwardsdepending on your experience and skills. You canalso get paid extra bonuses for working in difficultsituations and conditions.Modeling agentswill get paid a commission fromeach model’s job. This fee varies from agent toagent, but is usually between 10 and 20 percent. For lingerie modeling the agents can negotiate ahigher fee to give them a 25 to 30 percentcommission. The modeling jobs they get you withad agencies and fashion shows will earn 15 to 20percent, while film and TV work will allow them totake 10 percent.

Hand model or foot model - You will earnless than a runway model, but it will still beconsiderable at about $100 per hour. This job allows you to take on more work as youare not limited by a contract to work for just one product of a similar nature..

www.dcpchicago.org Developing Communities Project (DCP) was organized in 1984 as a branch of the Calumet Community Religious Conference (CCRC) that sought to impact the massive lay-offs and manufacturing plant closings in Southeast Chicago in the 1970’s and 1980’s. As an arm of CCRC, DCP initiated local action campaigns to improve the quality of life for residents in Greater Roseland. In 1986, DCP was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization under the leadership of its first executive director, then community organizer and now President of the United States, Barack Obama. DCP remained church-based with the mission to serve as a vehicle for grassroots leaders to impact decision-making around issues that affect their lives. For the past twenty-three years, thousands of residents have been mobilized to work for positive community change and equity through local churches and community based organizations. DCP accomplishes its mission by training and empowering residents with leadership, public policy, advocacy, and community organizing skills to address issues such as poverty, unemployment, urban violence, low educational achievement, public safety, environmental justice, and limited access to resources, especially transportation. DCP’s work is accomplished with a committed and diverse complement of volunteers, staff, and interns. Governance and oversight are provided by a Board of Directors comprised of community and business leaders and clergy and laity from member churches. In 2006, DCP received a ShoreBank Faith-Based Community Impact Award and honorable mention for the 2006 Chicago Community Organizing Award that is sponsored by four local foundations. The following year, DCP received the 2007 Chicago Community Organizing Award. 212 E. 95th Street Chicago, IL 60619 Phone: 773.928.2500 Fax: 773.928.2513 Email: info@dcpchicago.org f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013 65

GemStones a.k.a. Gemini A

t first I was really giving up on the so called Hip Hop Scene of Chicago and then when I heard this brother I was AMAZED!!!! Words can not discribe how talenting this brother is and I have heard a lot of these so called positive rappers. I will seek to interview and shoot him one day.

Gemstones, otherwise known as Demarco Castle, is a rapper and R&B singer from Chicago who is still to get well known in the gospel rap world but in the mainstream has forged quite a reputation as one of the finest urban music talents of his era. As a teenager the young rapper and singer came to the attention of the then unknown rappers Lupe Fiasco and the late Stack Bundles.

Check out his song Fire In My Heart and become a believer too!

hen I first met this young lady I knew she was specail. She was humble, but strong. She was witty but respectful. She was short but strong and she had Favor on her life which was seen by everyone who came in contact with her. Her back story was even more impressive as I found out she was a single mom not due to the typical boy leaving her but she was widowed. She did not let that stop her, she did not make excuses, she did not just rely on the goverment, friends and family. What did she do? She created a business. A cleaning service! Yes with two children, this brave little woman with a big heart and even bigger spirit moved in excellence and created her own business dispite the obstacles thrown to her. Its very rare for me to find truly genuine people in our industry but this young lady is one of those hidden gems that make you believe.

94 f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013

Many times I would call upon her wisdom to discuss issue with me. Confession (I knew she was tired) but she made sure she would talk to me and help me out with my issues. She was so patient with me and spoke with grace and a good heart. This is why I am proud and honnored to feature her in this issue of F-Style Chicago Magazine. Meika’s Cleaning & Organizational Service was her new baby and I had the opportunity to video tape her services for her commercial. I have to say, this young lady knows her stuff. She taught me much in one day about household cleanning and orgnaization. I was even more impressed with her business savey which was equally matched to her skill and talent for house hold cleaning & organization. As a busy photographer I have to say that one day soon I will definatly be honored to be one of her clients ( that is if my future wife will allow another beautiful woman in the house with us LOL)

f-Style Chicago Mag/ 2013 95

On a serious note, I full endores this young lady and I am really proud to see her expand her business as she makes plans to build a team to handle her growing business request.

Be on the look out for her business and service and if you are in need of her service be sure to check her out and see why I brag on her so much. you can contact her at www.meikainc.com
