Dear Friends of the Arts: Welcome to another year of performing and fine arts at Fayetteville State University (FSU)! A great deal of work and thought was put into selecting artists, musicians, theatrical performances, and dance troupes that will make this one of the best seasons in history. We are certain you will be pleased with what is on tap for you. As you peruse the pages of Ovation, there is no doubt in my mind that you will come across a performance or an exhibit that you will consider a must-see event. What’s even more impressive about this year’s lineup is that all these features are of little or no-cost. We did this with the goal of not only making the arts affordable, but also to allow access to our campus for the citizens of Fayetteville and surrounding communities. While you are here, take a tour and observe our beautiful and historic buildings, visit one of our picturesque landmarks, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll. It is my sincere hope that you appreciate and enjoy all that we have to offer this year. Sit back, relax, and at the end of the performance, exhibit or dance, I hope you stand to your feet and give a resounding ovation to what you have witnessed. I look forward to seeing you at a performance! Sincerely,
James A. Anderson Chancellor

Mr. Johnathan Chestnut
Interim Chair for the Department of Performing and Fine Arts As Interim Chair for the Department of Performing and Fine Arts for academic year 2018-2019, I am pleased to be able to facilitate our department’s goal of promoting Fayetteville State University as a cultural center and destination in the Cape Fear Region of North Carolina. We hope this year’s events inspire longstanding and new visitors to attend events in the 2018-2019 Fine Arts Series. This year’s scheduled events celebrate the contribution of women in the arts in music, dance, visual art, and theatre. A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, my higher education began locally at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where I obtained an Associate Degree in Commercial Art and Advertising. While attending Fayetteville State University, in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts, I was able to develop my voice as an artist and earned a BA in Visual Art. After graduating from FSU, I earned a Master of Fine Arts in computer graphics from the Memphis College of Art in Memphis, in Tennessee. After graduate school I was employed as a graphic artist by Booz, Allen and Hamilton - a U.S. government contracting business in Washington, D.C. One of my duties was to create the design layouts for publications in the office of the Deputy Secretary of Defense. This career path allowed me to gather experience in photography and computer graphics, as well as 3-D modeling before beginning my career as a teacher. Circumstance brought me back to Fayetteville where I was employed by Belk Department Store designing advertising publications as well as internal corporate materials. I left corporate America to teach in the Cumberland County
Schools for five years, before coming to Fayetteville State University. The city of Fayetteville, FSU and the arts have always been an important part of my life. My father, a restaurateur businessman, had an interest in art, various crafts, photography, metal work, and even early technology. He created a family environment filled with intellectual exploration, problem solving and even risk taking. All of his influences directly lead to my own creative direction and how I approach teaching the art students at FSU combining classic artistic ideas with the technology and innovative ways to change our relationship with material. Excited to be back at my alma mater, I have been a Professor of Digital Art at Fayetteville State University for fifteen years and was awarded the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year. For the past fifteen years I have been engaged in service and my own scholarship. One of my greatest contributions to FSU has been my leadership role to enrich, develop and apply new technology in the arts for our students as part of their career path. Another full circle for me is the theme of celebrating women in the 2018-2019 Fine Art Series. I am truly excited by this year’s theme as I reflect on the powerful women that helped shape and guide my life and those that continue to do so. So, thank you Erdeen Zimmerlee (my mother), Edith Grissett (my grandmother), Wendy (my extraordinary wife), Lillian (my daughter), and Soni Martin (my mentor and colleague). Enjoy the season!

10/6/18 - 11/17/18 Art Exhibit- Heroic Women: Comic & Pop Culture Location: Rosenthal Gallery Opening Reception 10/4/18 6-7:30 pm Presentation 10/11/18 2:00 pm Tickets: FREE 3/7/2019 - 4/13/2019 Art Exhibit: Stop It! Rosenthal Gallery Opening Reception 3/7/2019 6-7:30 pm Tickets: FREE To celebrate the year of women, Rosenthal Gallery is presenting Stop It! An International Mail Art Exhibition, March 7 – April 28, 2019. The exhibit is by women addressing their concerns for any local, national or international issue that needs to be stopped. Mail Art is a mainstream global art movement. Original works are created on a small scale which go through the postal system. Artists do not create a work then put it into an envelope; instead the work of art itself must go through the postal system and have been properly stamped by the postal office. Mail art is considered art once it is mailed. Mail artists appreciate the challenge of a limited size work of art and the inclusive scope of the exhibition (anyone who can afford postage). As well, mail artists appreciate interconnection with other artists and having an art platform that promotes an egalitarian way of creating that sidesteps the art market, museums and galleries.
14
The work of art can be likened to a post card one sends through the mail, except artists in this exhibit might choose wood or metal as a substrate to send through the mail. Due to the democratic character of mail art and the scope of mediums available, the materials and techniques to create the work of art is open ended. Although there will be much variety in materials and images, the one unifier for the exhibit is women from around the world who choose to participate and have their voices expressed about what needs to be stopped. Students and local artists are encouraged to participate and be part of an international exhibition in Rosenthal Gallery. All work must be delivered by the postal service and arrive at Rosenthal Gallery no later February 22, 2019. Written by J. Nicole Brooks Directed by Jeremy Fiebig
HOME written by Samm-Art Williams (Butler Theatre). Directed by Phoebe Hall. Produced to great acclaim by the Negro Ensemble Company, this brilliant inventive, lyrically expressive play deals with the coming of age of a young black man from rural South Carolina. On a small farm that Cephus Miles, an orphan, has inherited from his family, Cephus is young and strong, content to work the land—until his childhood sweetheart rejects him and goes off to college. Not believing in the Vietnam war, Cephus is imprisoned as a draft evader for refusing to serve. By the time he is released, Cephus has lost his land to the tax collector so he heads north to a new life, a good job and a slinky new girlfriend. The big city is exciting and rewarding, until the dream begins to fade—Cephus loses his job and becomes involved in drugs and prostitution. Finally, he returns to South Carolina and settles back on the land with his old sweetheart. Despite all, he has never lost his joyous goodwill, his indomitable spirit and the belief that one day his quest for fulfillment will be rewarded.
Fayetteville State University Theatre’s season opens with an explosive retelling of Phaedra that would make Euripides, Seneca and Jean Racine blush. This story of power and lust is set in a re-imagined Haiti that stands as the world’s greatest superpower. Fedra attempts to seduce her stepson, but things quickly fall apart, and enemies are quickly made. Only the fiercely mischievous pen of J. Nicole Brooks (Black Diamond) could so ignite the hidden power of this enduring myth. Mature audiences only.

Historic and current topics broached include fatherlessness, the women’s liberation movement, gang violence and relationships. Civil Rights and the Hip-hop Generation expands on these ideas to include other topics concerning all AfricanAmerican youth today, and has been dubbed, “not your parents MLK show”. Providing thousands of acts over the years, many great performers and famous names have graced the stage. Seabrook Auditorium is basked in university history. The building, originally constructed in 1954, has seen its fair share of famous performers and speakers. The building, which held 1,200 people, was originally called College Auditorium. The name changed to J.W. Seabrook Auditorium in honor of Dr. J. Ward Seabrook, the president of Fayetteville State Teacher’s College from 1933-1956. Seabrook not only hosts performances for students to enjoy, but is also a cornerstone of entertainment in the community.
