It’s Alive! ALIVE! A team of scientists led by Craig Venter of the J. Craig Venter Institute have managed to create what amounts to artificial life. They were able to take some synthetically created DNA and transplanted it into a bacteria. The bacteria then replicated itself, thus creating a second generation of the synthetic DNA. They made certain that it was the synthetic DNA that was replicated by verifying certain watermarks they put into it to differentiate it from the DNA of the normal bacteria. This first venture was used as a proof of concept, and JCVI has many possible and useful creations in the planning process. Methuselopportunity The NASA rover Opportunity landed on Mars in 2004 for a three-month mission. More than six years later, it’s still going strong, gathering data and sending it
back to Earth. The Opportunity has now been on Mars over 2246 Martian days, beating the previous record of 2245 set by the Viking 1 lander for surface longevity. The Opportunity’s twin, the Spirit, landed on the surface three weeks earlier, but it got stuck in the Martian winter, and its solar panels could no longer generate enough power. Scientists are hoping that with the passing of winter, the Spirit will be able to get in contact again, but even if it does, it’s likely to remain stationary. Meanwhile, the Opportunity is on its way towards a crater called Endeavour, which it won’t reach for another two years. Aside from information about the type of meal, the food, and the recipe, the book also gives nutritional information for the recipes, and asides focus on some of the individual ingredients.
You see all kinds of different locations and statuses in the catalog when you look items up. In this section, we’ll explain what these messages mean.
Lost: A Lost item is an item that is in the system, but we don’t know where it currently is located. In most cases, this designation is given to items that are long past their due date. If the item you’re looking for is listed as Lost in the catalog, you can still try placing a hold on it, and it may just find its way back to the library. You can also try placing an ILL request for the title, with a note stating that our copy is currently Lost.
