What: Join Julia Zimmerman, Dean of University Libraries, for a complimentary reception and lecture by Dr. Andrew Frank of FSU’s Department of History. This is a rare opportunity to conduct a white-glove inspection of antique books and maps from the FSU Libraries’ Special Collections! Where: St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum 81 Lighthouse Avenue 904-829-0745 When: Friday, August 27, 2010 5:30-7:30 p.m. Who: This event is hosted by the Florida State University Libraries with support from: • FSU Alumni Association • St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum • St. Johns County Public Library, Anastasia Island • St. Augustine Local Planning Committee • Ex Libris Special Collections Committee Visuals: St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum (http://www.staugustinelighthouse.com/): The current lighthouse was completed in 1874. Constructed of Alabama brick and Philadelphia iron, the lighthouse is St. Augustine's oldest surviving brick structure. The St. Augustine Lighthouse rises 165 feet above sea level and contains 219 steps. At the top, a first order Fresnel lens serves the beacon. The St. Augustine lens consists of 370 hand-cut glass prisms arranged in a beehive shape towering twelve feet tall and six feet in diameter. FSU Libraries’ Florida History Collection (http://www.lib.fsu.edu/about/special-collections/index.html): The Florida History Collection features guidebooks and books about the natural environment, government, industry, and native peoples.
