Strozier Library Learning Commons Key Facts June 2010

The Strozier Learning Commons project was begun in May 2009 and opened to students in March 2010.

Renovations and library opening hours were carefully thought out and driven by the Undergraduate Conversations assessment project, which was conducted to determine students’ needs and desires for their study spaces.

The contractor was Albritton Williams and the architect was Rodney Lewis, Lewis + Whitlock. Key features include: o Card-access turnstiles at the entrance / exit (funded by the Athletics Dept.) provide the Library with visitor usage data as well as enhanced security. o 168 computers: 102 PCs, 50 laptops, 5 assistive technology PCs, and 11 multimedia workstations with scanners/enhanced software o Eight study rooms; can be reserved at library service desks o Checkout of digital cameras, video cameras, and projectors; expanded access to academic software; and an audio recording and editing studio o Furnishings with wheels and/or detachable desktops for flexible use o Upgraded assistive technologies (computers, software) and adaptive equipment (keyboards, mice, and adjustable tables).

FSU is the only state university in Florida to keep its main library fully functional with circulation, all floors available, reference and virtual reference available 24/5.

The University Libraries have had ongoing support from the FSU Student Government Association, which has provided funding for offerings including computers and enhanced academic software, digital media, popular fiction and DVDs, and tutoring.

2,104 Florida State University students were tutored in the Learning District at Strozier Library and Dirac Science Library during the spring 2010 semester. University Libraries coordinates the popular program, providing free evening tutoring in courses identified as particularly challenging for students. The tutors -- other Florida State students -- are funded by a gift from the Student Government Association. University Libraries also partners with organizations across campus to provide tutoring at other hours as well as a range of other academic support services such as academic advising and language chats.

New Starbucks @ Strozier summer hours: Monday - Thursday: 7:00am – Midnight; Friday: 7:00am - 6:00pm; Saturday: 11:30am - 6:00pm; Sunday: Noon – Midnight.
