It’s a common football adage that the most improvement a team makes is between weeks one and two. For Fairmont State University’s defense that pretty much rang true on the road Saturday afternoon against No. 22 Concord University.
In a week one 59-34 loss to West Virginia State, Fairmont’s defense was beleaguered and battered. The Falcons allowed 509 total yards, including 279 on the ground and 230 through the air and permitted seven touchdowns and a pair of field goals to a team which had scored over 20 points KVTU PODF JO
were redshirt freshman outside linebacker Jerry Iweh and true freshman safety Stephen Turner. “We were pretty disappointed with the way we played in our opener and the coaches pushed us hard this week to respond with a better effort and I think we did, said Turner, who finished with five tackles and returned a blocked punt six yards to help set up the Falcons’ lone touchdown of the game. “We lost and we don’t like that, but I think we all feel like we made strides in the right direcUJPO UPEBZ 8F WF KVTU HPU UP CVJME P¸ PG UIJT BOE keep it going. Iweh, who also finished with five tackles, agrees.
This past Saturday against Concord, a team which returned eight offensive starters from its 2014 team which made it to the NCAA Division II Playoff Semifinals and ranked first in the Mountain East Conference a year ago in scoring (42.4 points), second in rushing yards per game (201.4) and third in passing yards per game (275.5), the Falcons’ defense performed admirably to say the least.
“We knew Concord had a very strong running game and all week we really focused on trying to TUPQ UIBU BOE EP B CFUUFS KPC BT B VOJU PG TXBSNing to the ball and tackling, said Iweh. “We faced a lot of adversity in our opener and were pretty upset with our performance. We wanted to deal with that adversity this week and get better and I think we took steps in that direction.
The nationally-ranked Mountain Lions recorded a 27-10 victory, but Fairmont’s defense kept it respectable by holding Concord to a season-low 308 total yards of offense, including 139 on the ground and 169 through the air.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys playing and we have a new defensive scheme this year and I think you saw signs today of it coming together. As a unit we spend a lot of time together and we take pride in what we do. We have made a lot of mistakes in our first two games, but I think we can correct those and I think we have the potential to get better every game.

One area first-year Fairmont State defensive coordinator Zach Crissup would like to see his unit improve upon is in the red zone. Opponents have made 10 trips into the red zone against Fairmont in the first two weeks of the season and have scored on all 10 trips. Opponents have nine touchdowns and one field goal on those red zone possessions.

The Falcons hope to have some other receivers step up in the coming weeks to aid in the passing game. To date, Guerra has over twice as many receptions as anyone else on the team. Johnson has punted eight times for an average of 39.4 yards per punt. His long punt this season was a 47-yarder against West Virginia State and he’s had two punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.
FSU’s defense will face another difficult test Thursday night when West Liberty (1-1) pays a visit to Duvall-Rosier Field for a 7 p.m. MEC contest. The Hilltoppers upended Concord, 29-28, in week one, but lost 50-27 Saturday to McKendree (Ill.) University. West Liberty’s offense is averaging 28 points and 457.5 yards of total offense after its first two games, including 159.0 on the ground and 298.5 through the air. === 5VSOPWFST IBWF CFFO BO JOUFSFTUJOH TVCKFDU GPS Fairmont State this fall. The good news is FSU’s offense has yet to suffer a turnover after the first two weeks. The bad news is the Falcons’ defense has yet to create a turnover. Prior to this season the last time Fairmont’s offense didn’t suffer a turnover was Sept. 13, 2014 in a 56-0 loss to Shepherd University. The last time Fairmont’s defense didn’t create a turnover prior to this season was Oct. 31, 2013 in a 40-37 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan. ===
