ATHENS, W.Va. -- Concord forced three second-half turnovers to pull away from Fairmont State, 34-17, on Saturday afternoon in Athens.

Concord improves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Mountain East games. FSU falls to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Concord outgained the FSU offense 406-226, including a 238-119 margin on the ground. The teams combined for 22 penalties in the game.

The Falcons got on the board first when Hibbs took the ball into the end zone from two-yards out to give FSU a 7-0 lead with 00:27 remaining in the first quarter. Andy Ellington put the Mountain Lions on the board with a 23yard field goal on the next CU possession to cut the FSU lead to 7-3.

Jones broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run at the 7:34 mark of the second quarter to give the Mountain Lions their first lead of the game. Late in the second quarter, Roberts ended a seven-play, 80 yard drive with a twoyard touchdown to give the Falcons a 14-10 lead at the half. The score was set up by a 50-yard pass from Brandon Ashenfelter to Kenny Washington. FSU got the ball to begin the second half but its drive would end on an interception by Carey at mid-field and returned to the FSU 31. Two plays later, Jones carried the ball 24 yards for his second score of the day. On the next FSU possession, the Falcons tied the game at 17-17 with a 27-yard field goal by Johnny Dearstine.

The Mountain Lions regained the lead for good when Ellington nailed a 48-yard field goal attempt with 14:50 to play in the game. After a Fairmont State punt, Novak found Tony Miller for the 33-yard touchdown pass to give Concord a two-possession lead. Late in the fourth quarter, a Concord punt was muffed and recovered by the Mountain Lions at the FSU 43. Novak scored three plays later on an eight-yard run to wrap up the scoring and give Concord the 34-17 victory. Score

Ask any current Fairmont State University football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.

They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game. Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Patriots won their first league championship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all. Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life. Not even the offensive linemen he was preparing to coach.

Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few offensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.

Yet it’s likely that most Falcon fans have no idea who Belser is. That’s fine. Belser, you see, takes it all in stride. He’s very familiar with the term anonymity and has been for quite some time. He understands his role on the team and does it week in and week out to near perfection.

here who really made an effort to help me feel comfortable starting as a true freshman at quarterback. He’s always supporting me and picking me up even when I play bad. Take our opener for example.
