FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State fell short on Saturday afternoon against the Hilltoppers of West Liberty, 27-21. FSU had two possessions inside West Liberty territory in the final 3:23 of the game.

The Falcons outgained the Hilltoppers 306-233 on the afternoon. Fairmont State also had nine more first downs and held a four minute advantage in time of possession. The West Liberty defense limited Fairmont State to 33 yards rushing and forced three turnovers in the victory. Cooper Hibbs completed 21-of-39 passes for a season-high 257 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the afternoon. Hibbs also had three interceptions in the game. Daniel Monroe played in his first game of the season and rushed GPS KVTU ZBSET PO DBSSJFT 'BCJBO (VFSSB IBE OJOF DBUDIFT GPS ZBSET and a touchdown to lead the FSU passing attack. Nick Alvaro added six catches for 60 yards. Dylan Lagarde went 12-of-23 for 164 yards and a score in the victory for West Liberty. Dylan Potts led the WLU receivers with six catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. Isiah Moody led the West Liberty ground attack with 18 carries for 50 yards.

Garrett Davis became the all-time leader in solo tackles at Fairmont State with his six solo tackles in the game. Davis had nine total tackles to lead the FSU defense. Jake Kelly had two sacks and a forced fumble for the Falcons.

Marquis Bradley had a game-high 10 tackles (eight solo) to lead the WLU defense. Josh Quinn had two of West Liberty’s five sacks. Rod White, Andrew Faraimo and Jovontae Johnson each had an interception for the Hilltoppers. West Liberty scored on the opening possession of the game with a oneyard touchdown run by Marty Bishop. The scoring play was set up a 65-yard pass from Lagarde to Potts. Late in the first quarter, Hibbs found Daniel Marc-Sears for a 55-yard touchdown to tie the game.

On the next possession, West Liberty regained the lead with 13-yard run by Shavonta Craft to cap a 3-play, 40-yard drive. After the teams traded punts, Hibbs found Sharmarte Banks for a nine-yard touchdown to send the teams to the locker room tied at 14-14. The Hilltoppers scored the only points of the third quarter with a 44-yard field goal by Bryan Arbes at the 3:09 mark. Early in the fourth quarter, Arbes added a 42-yard field goal to give the Hiltoppers a 20-14 advantage. On the next possession, FSU failed on a 4thand-2 to give West Liberty the ball at its own 40-yard line. FSU cut the lead to 27-21 after Tyler Pate found Guerra for a 16-yard touchdown with 5:47 to play. After a three-and-out by West Liberty, FSU would get the ball back and reached the WLU 45 but a sack on a 4th-down attempt gave the ball back to the Hilltoppers with 2:06 to play. The FSU defense held the Hilltoppers once again to give the FSU offense another opportunity with 1:41 to play. FSU worked the ball down to the WLU 48-yard line but an offensive pass interference penalty backed-up the Falcons. Two-plays later, the Falcons failed on a 4th-and-21 attempt to wrap up the 27-21 victory for West Liberty. Score

Ask any current Fairmont State University football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.

They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game. Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Patriots won their first league championship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all. Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life. Not even the offensive linemen he was preparing to coach.
