FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State’s rally fell short in overtime as WV Wesleyan picked up a 40-37 victory on Thursday evening at Duvall-Rosier Field. FSU scored 10 points in the final 4:20 of the game to force the extra session. With the victory, WV Wesleyan improves to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the Mountain East. Fairmont State falls to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in the MEC.
The Falcons outgained the Bobcats, 535-471 and also held a nine-minute advantage in time of possession. Fairmont State also held a 30-24 advantage in first downs but committed 11 penalties for 109 yards. WVWC had just 51 penalty yards in the game.
Cooper Hibbs had his best performance of the season, completing 23-of-31 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown. Daniel Monroe had a season-high 170 yards and two scores to lead the FSU rushing attack. Dawrence Roberts chipped in 71 yards on 15 carries and scored a rushing touchdown as FSU racked up 267 yards on the ground. Nick Alvaro led the FSU receivers with 10 catches for 122 yards in the loss, both of which are career-highs. Jeremy Mussleman completed 17-of-30 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bobcats to victory. Mike Anderson had a game-high 224 yards on the ground for WV Wesleyan. LaVaughn Hughes hauled in seven catches for 95 yards and a score to lead the Bobcat receivers. Garrett Davis had 12 tackles (nine solo) to lead the FSU defense. FSU failed to record a sack or an interception in the game. Mike Savage and Ed Hasis each had nine total tackles to lead the Wesleyan defense. Hasis also recovered a fumble in overtime.
On the second-play of overtime, the Falcons got the ball down to the 11-yard line but a fumble recovery by the Bobcats set the visitors up with a chance to win the game on the second possession of overtime. After three runs by WVWC, Kasper Bernild hit a 41-yard field goal to wrap up the victory for the Bobcats. Score

West Liberty (3-3, 3-2 MEC) scored 21 points in the opening 11:58 of the game and went 6-for-6 from inside the red zone in the victory. The Hilltoppers also racked up 485 yards of total offense and 233 yards on the ground. Fairmont State (2-4, 2-4 MEC) had 413 yards of total offense, including 331 through the air. However, the Falcons were just 2-of-6 in the red zone and turned the ball over three times.
Cooper Hibbs led the FSU offense by completing 27-of-42 pass attempts for 331 yards and a touchdown. Hibbs also threw three interceptions. The Falcons had two receivers go over 100 yards in a game for the first time since the 2012 season, led by Fabian Guerra with 12 receptions for 131 yards. Dakota Conwell had 252 yards on just 13 complete passes and tossed a trio of touchdowns to lead the Hilltoppers to victory. Conwell also had 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Anton McCallum was on the receiving end of three receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Potts crossed the goal line twice and hauled in three receptions for 27 yards in the game. Isiah Moody had a team-high 60 yards on the ground for West Liberty. Marcus Porter led the FSU defense for the second straight week with 11 total tackles (seven solo). Calvin Pringles chipped in four tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception for the Falcons defensively. Alec Wood had a game-high 12 tackles to lead West Liberty on defense. Josh White recorded three solo tackles and had two interceptions for the ‘Toppers.
West Liberty took the ball 58 yards on six plays to score on the opening drive of the game after Conwell crossed the goal line from three-yards-out. After the teams traded three-and-outs, Fairmont State attempted a fourthand-short that was unsuccessful to give the Hilltoppers possession inside Fairmont State territory at the 48. Five plays later, Conwell found Potts in the back of the endzone to give West Liberty a 14-0 lead. The ‘Toppers added seven more just two minutes later when an interception by White set up Potts’ second score of the day from 11 yards out.
After adding two points on a safety early in the second, WLU went ahead 30-0 following an 85-yard hookup from Conwell to McCallum.
The Hilltoppers put three on the board on their first possession of the third quarter before Hibbs found Pate to cap a 14-play, 73-yard drive to make the score 33-10 after three quarters. White added a second Fairmont State touchdown early in the fourth to cut the margin to 33-16 following a missed two-point conversion. However, the Falcons were unable to score the rest of way and the ‘Toppers added a late touchdown to make the final margin, 39-16. FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit to edge Urbana, 35-31, on Saturday afternoon during the 2014 Homecoming Game. Fabian Guerra scored the go-ahead touchdown at the 6:56 mark of the fourth quarter on a 32-yard pass from Cooper Hibbs.
The teams combined for 410 penalty yards on 41 accepted penalties in the game. The national record for combined penalties in a game is 42. Despite all the penalties, Urbana racked up 449 yards of total offense while Fairmont State totaled 392 yards. Cooper Hibbs completed 23-of-37 pass attempts for 332 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the come-from-behind victory. Devon Garnett hauled in eight passes for 78 yards and Guerra caught five passes for 77 yards and a score. Daniel Marc-Sears also had a big day in the passing game with four catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Austin White led the FSU rushing attack with 16 carries for 46 yards and a score.
Cale Burdyshaw went 25-of-46 for 338 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon. Karim Jones Jr. had six receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Marcus Porter racked up 10 total tackles, including seven solo and two for a loss before leaving the game with an injury. Emanuel Ivey had seven tackles out of his safety spot and broke up five passes, including two on the final Urbana drive of the game. Three touchdown passes by Burdyshaw and 17 penalties for 160 yards by the Falcons helped Urbana build a 28-7 halftime lead on Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Feld. In the second half, FSU tied the game at the 3:26 mark of the third quarter with 21-unanswered points. The Falcons scored less than three minutes into the half when Marc-Sears caught a 55-yard pass from Hibbs less than three minutes into the half.
After pinning Urbana deep and forcing a punt, FSU took over at the Urbana 38 later in the third quarter. Daniel Monoe found the end zone five plays later from four-yards out to cut the UU lead to just seven points. On the next Urbana possession, Burdyshaw was picked-off by Jacob JeanCharles and was tackles just shy of the goal line to set the Falcons up with first-and-goal from the one-yard line. White tied the game with a one-yard run for the Falcons to tie the game.
Urbana regained the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter after a 24yard field goal by Ross Snodgrass. However, Hibbs found Guerra at the 6:56 mark to give FSU the lead for the first time in the game. The Blue Knights were threatening inside the FSU 10 on their final drive of the game, but a pass break-up by Ivey on fourth down turned the ball over to the Falcons and allowed the offense to run out the clock. Fairmont State’s defense, much maligned during the 2014 season for allowing the most points (37.3) and yards per game (481.3) in the Mountain East Conference, came up huge Saturday afternoon in the second half of the Falcons’ thrilling 35-31 come-from-behind homecoming victory over visiting Urbana University Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.
After allowing the Blue Knights to score four touchdowns on their first six possessions of the game, FSU’s defense stiffened in the second half and permitted just one field goal on seven Urbana possessions in the final 30 minutes. Falcon sophomore cornerback Jacob-Jean Charles also intercepted a Blue Knights’ pass and returned it 28 yards to set up a game-tying TD in the final half and Fairmont made a huge goal line stand in the waning minutes to secure the victory after Urbana achieved a first-and-goal at the Falcons’ eight-yard line. i8F DBNF UP QMBZ JO UIF TFDPOE IBMG w TBJE '46 sophomore safety Emanuel Ivey who finished with seven total tackles and a team-high five pass breakups, two of which came on Urbana’s final four passes inside of the FSU eight-yard line with just over three minutes remaining in the game. i0VS NPUUP JT TUBSU GBTU BOE mOJTI TUSPOH 8F certainly didn’t start fast today, but we did finish strong. i8F WF KVTU USJFE UP TUBZ UPHFUIFS BT B VOJU %VSJOH the bye week we ran gasers, 200 yards five times straight with no break. The Falcons and Blue Knights combined to have 41 penalties for 410 yards in the contest and all, for the most part, were warranted. Ironically, Urbana also holds both the MEC singlegame record for penalties (24) and penalty yards in a game (219). That was set last season in a Blue Knights’ victory over West Liberty. Fairmont had 17 penalties for 160 yards in the first half of Saturday’s game with Urbana. In the second half the Falcons cleaned things up and suffered just three flags for 35 yards. For the season Fairmont is averaging 9.5 penalties per game for 91.9 yards per outing. That ranks the Falcons 10th in the 11-team MEC. Ask any current Fairmont State University football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.
They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game. Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Patriots won their first league championship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all. Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life. Not even the offensive linemen he was preparing to coach.

And he does it equally with all of his offensive linemen from his starters all the way down to a true freshman who is destined to be redshirted.

Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few offensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.
Yet it’s likely that most Falcon fans have no idea who Belser is. That’s fine. Belser, you see, takes it all in stride. He’s very familiar with the term anonymity and has been for quite some time. He understands his role on the team and does it week in and week out to near perfection.
