In the spring of 1993 Compton was selected in the third round of the NFL draft as the 68th overall pick by the Detroit Lions. He played eight seasons with the Lions, who made five playoff appearances during that span and he helped pave the way for NFL Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders.
Compton came from humble beginnings. He was born in Richlands, Va. and raised in a double-wide trailer in McGuire Valley, Va. He went on to star at Richlands High School in baseball, wrestling and football where he attracted the attention of Division I coaches. He signed with WVU in 1988, redshirted and played for the Mountaineers from 1989-92 starting his final three seasons at center. His senior season he was a consensus All-American selection and a first-team Academic AllAmerican.
