FIGHTING FALCONS SEASON PREVIEW
Witsaman
Smathers
Bias
A PREVIEW: The Fairmont State volleyball team will open the 2014 season with high expectations following its runner-up finish in both the MEC Regular Season and Tournament last season. However, the Falcons will have to replace four impact seniors that graduated. The Falcons will have seven newcomers joining nine returning players this season, five of which have played significant time for the Falcons over the past two seasons. “We are not looking to replace the fantastic seniors that we lost, but to create a new style with our talented, experienced returners and our immediate impact freshman class,” said head women’s volleyball coach Courtney Materazzi. “All 16 players fight every single day in practice to improve individually and as a team. We are lucky to have such depth and a high level of play in our gym every day.» Seniors Tiff Smathers and Tabbie Bias have begun to move their way up the FSU record book for digs and assists and will be the senior leaders for the 2014 Falcons. Smathers is currently in fifth place in school history with 1,600 career digs and needs just 605 digs as a senior to become the all-time record holder at Fairmont State. Smathers also earned first team All-MEC honors a season ago and earned honorable mention All-Atlantic Region from the AVCA after finishing atop the MEC and 30th in the country in digs. Bias was sixth in the country in assists a season ago and is currently in sixth-place in FSU history with 2,316 assists. Last season, Bias recorded the second-best, single-season in school history with 1,460 assists to earn first team All-MEC and AVAC All-Atlantic Region honors. She was also named to the
MEC All-Tournament Team for her performance in Wheeling. “We have five returners who have seen significant playing time and garnered individual and team success with their time at Fairmont,” said Materazzi. “All nine returners made huge improvements during the spring.” “Tiff, Kaitlyn (Witsaman) and Tabbie have done a great job leading this team on and off the court as team captains. Tiff is a force in the back row, while Tabbie is really working hard to perfect some offensive changes we are making, Materazzi continued. However, with all the additions in the offseason, paired with several key losses, the coaching staff will be looking for several freshmen to step in and contribute right away. “This freshman class has been a joy from the recruiting process to the first practice,” said Materazzi. “Beyond being talented, they have really helped create the culture we want and have going in our gym.” “We expect contributions from each of them this season and look forward to the start of their collegiate careers here at Fairmont State.” The Falcons will open up the 2014 season on Saturday afternoon at the East Stroudsburg Tournament against Wilmington. This seasons schedule features six matches against teams that made an NCAA Tournament appearance last season. “This seasons tough schedule shows our confidence in the girls and we’re excited to get it started up at FSU,” said Materazzi. “Our goal of making it to the NCAA Regional Tournament is heightened after not getting a bid last season; but we continue to work towards success in the MEC.” WWW.FIGHTINGFALCONS.COM

Head Coach
Assistant Coach
Courtney Materazzi is in her first season as head coach of the Fairmont State volleyball program after serving as an assistant coach for five seasons with the Falcons. Materazzi is just the second head coach in the 30-year history of Fairmont State volleyball. Materazzi was with the Falcons from 2008-10 as an assistant coach, then spent one season at Stetson before re-joining the Falcon program in 2012. She was intricately involved with all aspects of the Fighting Falcon program including game day strategy and management, practice planning, recruiting and fundraising activities. In 2013, Materazzi helped lead the Falcons to a 27-7 overall record and runner-up finish in the inaugural MEC Volleyball Tournament. The 27 victories last season are the most at FSU since the 1995 season. Materazzi also helped mentor four first team All-MEC players last season, including Bri Swann, who also earned second team Capital One Academic All-America honors. Two seasons ago, Materazzi helped coach Fairmont State to a 24-9 overall record with three FSU players earning postseason honors from the WVIAC. In 2011, Materazzi served as an assistant coach for the indoor program and the inaugural sand volleyball team at Stetson University. The Hatters sand volleyball team finished with a 9-8 record, finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, and had a pair compete at the AVCA Championships. Julia Bassett was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year. In her first stint at Fairmont State from 2008-10, Materazzi helped the Falcons increase their win total each season with her on the bench, culminating with a 20-10 overall record and a runner-up finish in the WVIAC standings in 2010. That season, two players earned first team All-WVIAC honors, the first from FSU to earn that honor since 2005. Materazzi came to Fairmont after a stellar career at Cal State Monterey Bay. As a senior for the Otters, she was a team captain and second team allconference selection. She was also named player of the week during her senior season and was named to the league’s all-academic team. During her career, the volleyball team was twice selected as the women’s team of the year. She and her husband, Christian, were married in the summer of 2010.
Jackie Buchanan begins her first season as Assistant Volleyball Coach at Fairmont State University after joining the program in the summer of 2014. Buchanan was a three-year standout on the volleyball team at Ohio State University-Newark, earning all-conference honors as a defensive specialist. Prior to arriving in Fairmont, Buchanan spent the last six years coaching high school volleyball, most recently at Greenville High School in South Carolina. Buchanan also has several years of experience coaching volleyball at the college level. As an assistant coach at Lander University and Limestone College, Buchanan helped lead the teams to conference championships. During the 2004-05 season, Buchanan was the Head Volleyball/Softball Coach at Union College. Under her guidance, the volleyball team had a record of 15-19 overall and a 12-8 mark in league play. Buchanan’s coaching career began in 2002 at her alma mater, helping the volleyball team to a 15-7 record as the team’s assistant coach. Buchanan has also coached Junior Olympic Club Volleyball on the national and regional level for the past seven years and has experience organizing and assisting with volleyball camps. Buchanan earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University in 2002 and obtained a master’s in K-12 education at Union College in 2005.
