FSU Picked Ninth In MEC Preseason Poll
Fairmont State will mix experience on offense with youth on defense under second-year head coach Jason Woodman in 2014. Cooper Hibbs was steady as a freshman last season throwing for 1,604 yards with 12 touchdowns, and he’ll be protected by postseason honors candidate Chris Barfield at left tackle. The Falcons graduated all three of their top tacklers from last season, but welcome back All-MEC performer Jacob Jean-Charles in the secondary. The Shepherd Rams have been picked to repeat as Mountain East Conference football champions after a vote conducted by the league’s coaches. Shepherd collected 95 points in the poll and was picked to finish first on seven ballots. Concord was picked second with 91 points and collected three first-place votes. Charleston was chosen third with 84 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Glenville State placed fourth (67), followed by West Virginia Wesleyan (60) and Urbana (58). Notre Dame and West Liberty were predicted to finish in a tie for seventh with 44 points, and Fairmont State (33), UVa-Wise (15) and West Virginia State (14) rounded out the poll. 2014 Mountain East Conference Preseason Poll 1. 'ARON "ELSER #ENTER OF !TTENTION 3EPTEMBER By Duane Cochran for fightingfalcons.com
Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few offensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.
Yet it’s likely that most Falcon fans have no idea who Belser is. That’s fine. Belser, you see, takes it all in stride. He’s very familiar with the term anonymity and has been for quite some time. He understands his role on the team and does it week in and week out to near perfection.
here who really made an effort to help me feel comfortable starting as a true freshman at quarterback. He’s always supporting me and picking me up even when I play bad. Take our opener for example. I threw four interceptions and he was still patting me on the back saying ‘It’s okay, you’re fine put it behind you and let’s go.’

He saw action in six games as a true freshman and ended up starting Fairmont’s final two games of the 2011 season at tackle. The following spring he took over at center and has been a mainstay there ever since for FSU. “Center is where I’m most comfortable, admitted Belser, who is listed as being 6-3 and 275 pounds, but likely doesn’t weigh that much. “It’s where I’ve always played since I was little.
