Fairmont State will mix experience on offense with youth on defense under second-year head coach Jason Woodman in 2014. Cooper Hibbs was steady as a freshman last season throwing for 1,604 yards with 12 touchdowns, and he’ll be protected by postseason honors candidate Chris Barfield at left tackle. The Falcons graduated all three of their top tacklers from last season, but welcome back All-MEC performer Jacob Jean-Charles in the secondary. The Shepherd Rams have been picked to repeat as Mountain East Conference football champions after a vote conducted by the league’s coaches. Shepherd collected 95 points in the poll and was picked to finish first on seven ballots. Concord was picked second with 91 points and collected three first-place votes. Charleston was chosen third with 84 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Glenville State placed fourth (67), followed by West Virginia Wesleyan (60) and Urbana (58). There’s little doubt three games into the 2014 season that the success of Fairmont State’s football team this fall will be predicated on the offense’s ability to pass the ball. Saturday afternoon sophomore quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 25-of-36 passes for 384 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Falcons to their first victory of the season, 40-36, over rival Glenville State at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Hibbs was intercepted once and sacked a season-high four times, but his ability to spread the football around the field to eight different receivers with an array of both short and long passes kept the Pioneers’ defense off balance and was a big key to the victory. i*O UIJT POF FWFSZPOF EJE UIFJS KPC BOE QMBZFE their role and I can’t say enough about how NVDI UIBU IFMQFE VT HFU UIJT XJO w TBJE )JCCT i8F WF HPU TPNF HVZT PVU XJUI JOKVSJFT CVU we starting to see some younger guys step up, get comfortable with what we’re doing and contribute for us which is what we have UP IBWF w i%BOJFM .BSD 4FBST TUFQQFE VQ BOE DBVHIU a pair of big touchdowns for us, Nick Alvaro had a huge one late for us and also did a great KPC PG CMPDLJOH UP IFMQ VT PQFO VQ TPNF QPQ screens that we threw. Ask any current Fairmont State University football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.
They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game. Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Patriots won their first league championship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all. Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life. He went on to star at Richlands High School in baseball, wrestling and football where he attracted the attention of Division I coaches. He signed with WVU in 1988, redshirted and played for the Mountaineers from 1989-92 starting his final three seasons at center. 'ARON "ELSER #ENTER OF !TTENTION 3EPTEMBER By Duane Cochran for fightingfalcons.com
Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few offensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.
Yet it’s likely that most Falcon fans have no idea who Belser is. That’s fine. Belser, you see, takes it all in stride. He’s very familiar with the term anonymity and has been for quite some time. He understands his role on the team and does it week in and week out to near perfection.
here who really made an effort to help me feel comfortable starting as a true freshman at quarterback. He’s always supporting me and picking me up even when I play bad. Take our opener for example. I threw four interceptions and he was still patting me on the back saying ‘It’s okay, you’re fine put it behind you and let’s go.’
