Season Preview Larry Hill will have high expectations as he enters his 30th season as the head coach of the Fairmont State volleyball team in 2013. The Falcons return every starter from the 2012 team that went 24-9 and finished fourth in the final WVIAC standings. FSU was recently voted to finish second in the first-ever MEC Preseason Poll behind Wheeling Jesuit University. The Falcons will open the 2013 season on September 6 as they host the fifth-annual Falcons Fest Tournament at Joe Retton Arena. Fairmont State will rely on the leadership of senior outside hitter Bri Swann, a two-time first team All-WVIAC and second team All-Atlantic Region honoree. Swann is considered by her coaches as a sixrotation player with one of the highest volleyball IQ’s on the roster. “I feel Bri is the top outside player in the region. She plays all phases of the game extremely well,” said veteran head coach, Larry Hill. Senior middle hitter, Amber Wilson, also returns coming off a strong junior season that ended with her being named second team All-WVIAC. Wilson provides a strong presence in the middle as a blocker and has worked to improve her offensive attacking in the past year. “Burr really worked hard in the offseason to be even more dynamic and explosive in the middle. She has large and aggressive goals for

the season and we’re excited to see her finish her career strong,” said assistant coach, Courtney Materazzi. Senior Leslie Giordon has been a blocking powerhouse out of her right side hitter position and looks to become a bigger offensive presence during her final season at Fairmont State. The Falcons will also welcome back a pair of juniors that are considered the leaders on the court. Setter Tabbie Bias led the FSU offense and became one of the fastest and most deceptive setters in the region despite battling an injury in 2012. Captain and libero, Tiff Smathers, finished the 2012 season with the fourth-most digs in a single season at FSU and was also second in the conference in that category to lead the Falcon defense. A trio of second-year players will also look to build off stellar performances during their freshman year as members of the FSU volleyball team. Kaitlyn Witsaman, a member of the 2012 WVIAC AllFreshman Team, will once again be a key contributor on the outside as a starter for the Falcons. Erin Harwood returns with an improved all-around game after being ranked in the top 15 in the country for aces per set a season ago. Courtney Kress also returns as a top offensive threat for the Falcons after earning a starting spot in the middle for the Falcons during the 2012 season. The volleyball coaching staff will also look for an immediate impact from a freshman class that will join the program for the 2013 season. Bre Blot, a 6-0 middle hitter from Miami, Fla., brings an incredible vertical and heavy arm to the team for the next four seasons. “Bre has an unbelievably large upside as a great athlete, but is still relatively new to the game,” said assistant coach, Camilo Guerci. A local newcomer also looks to make an impact this season. Alexis Williams joins the team after spending time on one of the top club teams in the state. Williams opened her coaches eye’s with her aggressive attitude on defense and powerful serve. f i g h t i n g fa l c o n s . c o m

Larry Hill Head Coach

Intro staff players review records

One of the most successful and consistent coaches in volleyball, head coach Larry Hill begins his 30th season at the helm of the Fairmont State volleyball program. He ranks eighth in NCAA Division II for victories among active head coaches with a mark of 606-478. The Falcons have had 20 winning times under Hill’s leadership and have posted 17 seasons of 20 wins or more, including each of the last three seasons. Coach Hill has led the Fairmont State program since its inception in 1984, and has been named WVIAC Coach of the Year four times (1985, 1988, 1990 and 1998). He has directed the Falcons to 20 winning seasons, including each of the last three years, and led the team to a school-record 42 wins in 1990. He has guided the Fighting Falcons to four WVIAC titles (1998, 1990, 1998 and 1999) and had players earn first team All-WVIAC honors 33 times. He coached three athletes who earned WVIAC Player of the Year honors in Jackie Burks (1988), Tracey Rowe (1989) and Courtney Fochtman (1994). Fochtman, Theresa Haggerty and Martha Ganoe are members of the Fairmont State Athletic Hall of Fame. Last season the Falcons posted their third-straight 20-win season and posted their highest win total since 1999 by going 24-9. Fairmont State finished fourth in the WVIAC with a record of 11-3. Bri Swann earned first team All-WVIAC honors for the second consecutive year, and was also named second team Daktronics All-Atlantic Region for the second year in a row. Additionally, FSU had a second team All-WVIAC selection in Amber Wilson and a member of the conference’s All-Freshman team in Kaitlyn Witsaman. During the 2012 season, Coach Hill celebrated yet another milestone posting his 600th career win against West Virginia State on Oct. 19. He became just the 14th coach in NCAA Division II history to reach the 600 win mark. In 2011, the posted a record of a 23-13 record. Fairmont State finished tied for fifth in the conference and Swann was a first team All-WVIAC and second team Daktronics All-Atlantic Region selection. In 2010, the Falcons notched a 20-10 record, finished second in the conference regular season standings and had a pair of first team All-WVIAC selections. Three seasons ago, the Falcons fell just one victory short of a 20-win season finishing with a 19-16 mark, but snapped a three-year skid finishing under .500. Hill coached second team selection Micah Bell, and helped develop Meagan Gibson into one of the more dominant players in the league as she led the WVIAC in kills and kills per game. In 2007, Hill won his 500th career match on Sept. 26, 2007, against Ohio Valley. In 2005, Hill led Fairmont State to its 16th winning season with a 2019 record and the team posted an impressive 14-4 record inside the WVIAC and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament. He helped Skinner earn first team All-WVIAC honors. 4

In 1998, Hill was selected as the Atlantic Region NCAA II Coach of the Year. That season, the Falcons finished first in the region with a 23-1 record and hosted the regional tournament. Another career milestone came on Sept. 12, 2000, as he garnered his 400th career win against Glenville. Prior to Hill’s becoming the volleyball coach at Fairmont, he was as assistant football coach for 13 seasons with the Falcons. Born in Weston, W.Va., Hill attended East Fairmont High School, where he participated in football and track and was named All-Big Ten and All-Marion County for his play. Hill then took his athletic talents to Fairmont State, where he was a fouryear letterman in football and was named All-WVIAC as a linebacker helping the Falcons to three, one-loss seasons during his career. He went on to serve on the coaching staff of the 1967 national championship team at Fairmont State. Hill received his master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1968. For the next two years Hill served in the United States Army. He returned to Fairmont State in the fall of 1970, and has been a coach and professor in the Division of HHP since that time. Hill also served as the head baseball coach for four years (1980-1983) and enjoyed a tremendous season in 1982 directing a team that went 21-13 (15-3 WVIAC) and won the Northern Division Championship of the WVIAC. Hill is married to the former Joyce Lynn Antolini.

Assistant coach

Courtney Materazzi is in her fifth season at Fairmont State as an assistant coach. Materazzi was with the Falcons from 2008-11, then spent one season at Stetson before re-joining the Falcon program in 2012. She is intricately involved with all aspects of the Fighting Falcon program including game day strategy and management, practice planning, recruiting and fundraising activities.

Camilo Guerci is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Fairmont State volleyball team. He is heavily involved with game day strategy and practice planning. FSU has posted 20+ wins in each of his two seasons with the program.

Last season Materazzi helped coach Fairmont State to the program’s most wins since the 1999 season as the Falcons went 24-9 on the year. FSU also had three players honored by the WVIAC.

Last season, Guerci was integral in helping the Falcons post a 24-9 record -- the most for Fairmont State since the 1999 season. He helped coach three players to WVIAC honors, including Bri Swann who was also named second team All-Atlantic Region.

In 2011, Materazzi served as an assistant coach for the indoor program and the inaugural sand volleyball team. The Hatters sand volleyball team finished with a 9-8 record, finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, and had a pair compete at the AVCA Championships. Julia Bassett was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year.

In his first season with the Falcons, Guerci helped FSU post its secondstraight season of 20 wins or more. In fact, the 23 wins in 2011 were the most for FSU in over a decade. He helped coach Swann to first team AllWVIAC and second team Daktronics All-Atlantic Region honors.

In her first stint at Fairmont State from 2008-10, Materazzi helped the Falcons increase their win total each season with her on the bench, culminating with a 20-10 overall record and a runner-up finish in the WVIAC standings in 2010. That season, two players earned first team All-WVIAC honors, the first from FSU to earn that honor since 2005. She also helped recruit several players on the current FSU squad, including all-conference honorees Bri Swann and Amber Wilson. Materazzi came to Fairmont after a stellar career at Cal State Monterey Bay. As a senior for the Otters, she was a team captain and second team allconference selection. She was also named player of the week during her senior season and was named to the league’s all-academic team. During her career, the volleyball team was twice selected as the women’s team of the year.

Guerci comes to Fairmont State after a successful career as a player at Mount Olive. A four-year starter for the Trojans, Guerci served as team captain for a squad that posted a 17-4 record and won a conference championship during his senior season. That year, Guerci was second in the nation in hitting percentage (.484) and 14th in the country in blocks per game. Upon graduation, Guerci coached club volleyball in North Carolina and Cincinnati before arriving at Fairmont State. A native of Miami, Fla., Guerci played high school volleyball at Christopher Columbus. There, he was a first-team all-county honoree and helped the Explorers to it’s first-ever district and regional championship, as well as the school’s first-ever appearance in the state tournament.

She and her husband, Christian, were married in the summer of 2010.
