A Contemporary Shopping EXPERIENCE You expect to see something new every time you walk into Rodes. But, on your next visit, you will find a whole new approach to shopping—a special menswear section curated for a contemporary lifestyle. The world has gotten more casual, and men—whether they are 25 or 52—are spending less time wearing suits. The 450-square-foot studio houses everything a modern man needs to look good, including shoes and accessories. This curated menswear section evolves as seasons change. The studio puts together some of Rodes popular contemporary brands, such as Adriano Gold-

schmied, Joe’s, Hudson, J Brand, Boglioli, Eleventy, Michael Bastian and more, to help our customers explore small departures from their usual styles. “These are all brands that we’ve been carrying, but this section allows us to show them with a new spin and a new attitude,” says Jim Porter, Rodes’ style advisor and men’s buyer. “We aren’t going to be trendy, but will be fashionable. There won’t be anything our guys are afraid to buy—tasteful but a click different from the traditional sportcoat and trousers.” Visit Rodes and put a new spin on your look.

Pick Pockets When it comes time to update your fall and winter wardrobes, versatility is a virtue. For men whose schedules demand their outfits truly take them from day-to-night, workday-to-weekend, the five-pocket trouser is the answer. Because the styling of these pants is less preppy than chinos and more formal than jeans, five-pocket pants work for a variety of personal styles. They can be mixed and matched with sweatshirts and sneakers as well as with blazers and loafers. Cotton fivepocket pants are great for transitional weather because they’re lighter weight than denim. But as the temperatures drop, move on to wool stretch or even cashmere. This season, PT05 created soft-brushed cotton five-pocket pants in several cool autumnal shades, such as golden khaki, and a fine, tight cream and brown check pattern. Both styles are available at Rodes, and Porter suggests pairing them with a sweater and sneakers. We love the versatility and elevated casual look of five-pocket styles, but we wondered what is that tiny fifth pocket for? It turns out the little pocket is a relic from the late 1800s when men used it to hold their pocket watches. While today’s man is more likely to sport a wristwatch or smartwatch, the little pocket serves as a distinctive detail.

An interviewee should dress conservatively, in either navy or charcoal, solid or with a subtle plaid or stripe. And fit is important, so your suit should be properly tailored and pressed. Alex and Mike Faherty left their corporate careers to create a successful brand.

Oh, BROTHERS! In five years, twins Alex and Mike Faherty have catapulted their apparel company to national success. By Brian Scott Lipton

8

Just as young authors draw from their own lives as inspiration for a first novel, then-30-year-old twins Alex and Mike Faherty looked no further than their own clothing needs back in 2013 when they gave up their careers in finance and design to launch an eco-friendly men’s swimwear collection. Five years later, Faherty has evolved into a fast-growing men’s and women’s contemporary apparel business, with $25 million in gross revenue (almost all of the profit goes back into the company). Retails range from $55 for a T-shirt to $400 for a cashmere sweater, with the average item costing about $120. “There’s no question the brand is an extension of us,” says Alex. “Mike and I think of ourselves as regular guys, so we make clothes that we—and our friends—want to wear. Of course, we’re always trying to give them a little extra style or a fresher color palette. Newness and modernity are definitely among our key words.” Adds Mike: “While other new brands worry about being the coolest guys on the block, we’re more worried about comfort. We know that’s what the majority of our customers, especially guys, look for—not how ‘beautiful’ the clothes are. We develop our own fabrics in China and India. When people feel our clothes, they immediately notice the softer hand. It helps us stand out.” As the brothers readily admit, their journey has been largely trial and error. “We had no idea what we were doing at first,” confides Alex. “We had our mobile store-cum-trailer that we drove around the country to do in-store appearances. We basically fought and clawed for the first two years to make our way in an industry that isn’t always welcoming to new brands.” What helped them most was their strong belief in customer service. “It sounds corny, but customer satisfaction is what we live for,” says Mike. “It’s why we offer a lifetime guarantee. Nothing eats us up more than if we get a complaint. And I think people respect the fact that we’re still very hands-on. We spend time in the stores; we respond to our own Instagram account; there’s a level of authenticity to our business that our customers seem to appreciate.”

Fall 2018 fashion tips for him

Q

After years of wearing suits most days, I’m ready to go more casual. What are the key pieces for a business casual look?

A

If you aren’t ready to start showing up to the office in a pair of jeans, opt for a pair of 5-pocket chinos. They have the cut of jeans making them a great transitional piece to ease you off the suit. Pair a zip-front sweater with either a bold color or plaid button-up shirt, and you’ll have the essential basics for a business casual wardrobe. Invest in a pair of leather Chelsea, heritage or chukka boots to complete the look.

Q

A lot of the guys who work for me wear soft blazers, jeans and sneakers to work. Are there any pointers for how the boss can pull off this look?

A

In today’s casual world, relaxed sportcoats, denim and sneakers are appropriate office attire for men of any age and rank. Think of your shirt as the focal point of the look. You can use bold prints or bright colors paired with a neutral, unstructured jacket. A great denim shirt is a super versatile option that can be dressed up or down. As the temperatures dip, long-sleeve knit shirts look refined and casual at the same time. When selecting a jacket, there are

10

many styles that look more polished, such as the Boglioli K-jacket. As for sneakers, Nike and Vans are far from your only options. In fact, many luxury brands are doing leather trainers, which have both sophistication and maturity. At Rodes, we carry Common Projects sneakers that are a mix of utilitarian design, luxury materials and a hybrid of casual and polished styles in shades of black, gray and olive.

Q

What outerwear and layering pieces will take me through fall and winter?

A

Let’s start with outerwear. There are great options for casual and tailored looks. A puffer will become your go-to in a few months. This year, try sporting one in a color other than black and matching it with a simple beanie made from luxury wool. We also are seeing check and plaid overcoats as a subtle statement-making top layer. For fickle fall weather, trenches are still very much on trend and can be layered over a vest to be more cool weather appropriate. Leather bomber jackets add a rugged touch. As for layering, the cardigan is having a moment (again) and looks great over a shirt and tie or layered under a sportcoat. Wearing a turtleneck may feel dated, but layering a turtleneck—especially one in a neutral color—under a sportcoat is very modern. For a more casual, yet still upscale look, wear a cashmere hoodie under a blazer or even a denim jacket on the weekend.

Ask SUSAN

Fall 2018 fashion tips for her

Q

I want a go-to look for work this fall that is versatile and chic. What are the must-have business casual pieces?

A

For a polished and chic business or casual look, the suit is back! Not quite back to the days of the 90s power suit, but rather a sophisticated plaid with ankle-length pants. We have seen striking plaids from head to toe creating a beautiful silhouette. The jacket paired with jeans is another great look. There are no rules when it comes to the jeans, whether it’s clean or deconstructed, acid washed or dark rinse, denim paired with a jacket is on trend for the season. We also love a long flowing blouse hanging below the jacket to soften the structured look or the simplicity of an unstructured jacket paired with a basic T-shirt and a long necklace for ease and comfort. This style flows easily from day into evening. By changing to a bold earring and a sexy pump, you are ready for happy hour, any night. (Denim is a must, come to Rodes to choose from your favorite brands including Hudson, Paige, Joe’s, J Brand, Parker Smith and Cambio)

Q

White after Labor Day, is it a rule or a myth?

A

Fashion designers for the last few seasons would like us to embrace white as a year-round color. So where did the rule of wearing white only from Memorial Day to Labor Day begin? I have been contemplating this arbitrary rule

22

just for you! These two holidays are unique to the U.S. European women are not confined by these dates so they are not as compelled to put away their whites for the colder seasons. I am convinced that the tradition started with white Mary Jane shoes, worn for the Easter holiday then placed back in the box until Memorial Weekend or until the snow melted. If white shoes were really to come back into fashion I may not wear them much into the fall season, but why not wear white jeans? During the winter months of black and gray, mixing in bright white on a sunny day gives a beautiful, striking contrast. Don’t shy away from whites to brighten your day.

Q

If I want to update my fall outerwear, what type of coat or jacket should I have?

A

I love outerwear! The fall 2018 outerwear will not be disappointing! The winter coat has become the fashion finisher and not just meant to keep out the cold. We love the Vince trench featured in basic colors or a fun plaid. Milly is fur-ocious with a faux fur coat in cobalt or cheetah! I’m loving leather in every form from Vince, Joie, and a new leather line, AS by DF, offering fresh motos in distressed rose gold and metallic gray. Remember that Churchill Downs is hosting the Breeders’ Cup in November. We have beautiful classics from Cinzia Rocca with pressed baby alpaca coats and cashmere wraps that are perfect for the occasion. The must have for the unpredictable track weather is the reversible hoodie from Diomi. Then, for the perfect stretch run, top it off with a beautiful felt hat from Christine A. Moore.

FOOT Loose! A modern man’s guide to building a footwear wardrobe. By Karen Alberg Grossman No one knows more about shoemaking than the Blanco family, for shoemaking is in their DNA. Here we chat with Magnanni’s third generation, Pascual Blanco, about the perfect shoe wardrobe for fall 2018. Can you give us a little background on your company?

Shoemaking has been part of the Blanco family for three generations. It began when our grandfather, Sebastián Blanco Aldomar, started his own workshop on the ground floor of his house in Almansa in the region of La Mancha, Spain. His small home-based operation employed only five shoe artisans. Our grandfather’s only son, our father Pascual Blanco Sr., started studying shoe design at age 14 and quickly became the head designer of his father’s company. My father was inspired by the romance and feel of early-American cinema, so he created more refined and elegant shoe designs that define the Magnanni aesthetic. We are now in our 64th year and Magnanni continues to be family-owned and operated by my five siblings and me. Our youngest brother,

Luis, is our head designer; he is continuously improving and evolving the shapes and lines of our shoes while implementing new technologies. Our oldest brother, Miguel, is in charge of creating new hand-antiquing methods and new colorways to highlight and complement Luis’ designs. We each have a role that reflects our strengths.

What are the key styles men must have in their footwear wardrobes for fall 2018?

The Magnanni Man has an elevated taste level and a worldly lifestyle, so my top picks from our autumn/winter ’18 collection would be: a comfort dress shoe, a contemporary fashion monk strap in perhaps a tobacco shade, a dress sneaker (why not cognac?), an athleisure sneaker, a fashion dress shoe, a dress/casual hybrid, a fabulous boot (we love gray!) and a formal shoe, perhaps in navy. But which is the must-have shoe this season?

It’s hard for me to pick just one, but I absolutely love what we’ve been able to create with our new Diversa comfort dress shoe line. Diversa means “diversified fit and feel from your

{ “My father was inspired by the romance and feel of early-American cinema.” average dress shoe.” Our goal was to create a collection of dress shoes with all the Magnanni DNA (beautiful lasts, modern designs, unique colors) but with the feel of a sneaker. After a long road of research and development, we’ve achieved this, which is so rewarding. This is the most comfortable dress shoe I’ve ever worn! Your thoughts on the now-ubiquitous sneaker trend?

Magnanni has embraced and intertwined the sneaker into our overall selection for the customer by offering many subcategories: dress sneakers, retro runners, modern hybrids and fashion high-tops. Sneakers have become a go-to item for men in both work and casual lifestyles. What type of shoe works best with a suit? With jeans?

The style that best works for a suit depends on the suit’s intended purpose. For example, if we are starting with a classic navy blue suit with a tailored fit, we would recommend pairing with a fashion dress style. The shoe will accentuate the lines of the suit from top to bottom. I would choose a shade of brown or tobacco; for a more formal setting, a cognac shade really makes the navy

34

Well Heeled: The right dress shoe (nothing too formal) adds a touch of class to dark denim.

pop. However, if our starting point is the same suit paired with a casual tee, a sneaker like our Elonso Lo Cognac would be perfect for a modern, laid-back feel. The same thinking applies to denim: If I’m wearing a sportcoat with a dress shirt to the office, I’d wear a dress/casual shoe; if I’m going to a fútbol match with my son, I’d wear our Merino sneaker with my jeans. What mistakes do men most often make when coordinating footwear with apparel?

For me, traditional rules no longer apply. Dress shoes and sneakers in today’s fashion climate are now interchangeable and can be worn with everything from suits to denim. My only steadfast rule is to make sure I’m dressed appropriately for the occasion. Why are shoes so expensive these days?

Shoe prices are derived from many variables including R&D, design, marketing and production costs like raw materials and labor. Our family’s approach has always been to control every aspect of the business to enable the best product, at the best price, while providing tremendous value to the end customer. It is said that women judge men by their shoes: What are they looking for exactly?

A man wearing a great pair of shoes gives women insight into his taste level, attention to detail and sense of style. However, no matter what shoe a man wears, it has to be polished and well maintained to show he knows how to take care of the finer things in life.

BEAUTY IS A BEAST Engineers loaded the Aston Martin DB11 with a monstrous V8 engine that takes you from 0–60 in four seconds—because you can’t get by on good looks alone. Leave it to Aston Martin to figure out a formula proving that eight isn’t always less than 12. The legendary British automaker has reinvented the mighty DB11, creating a lighter, easier-tohandle (who knew that was possible?) alternative to the previous 12-cylinder model. The new DB11—as well as its drop-top Volante trim—is powered by a German-made, 503-horsepower V8 engine that does the 0-60 mph sprint in a blistering four seconds—only one-tenth of a second off its sibling’s pace. And, of course, it’s packed with all the gadgets associated with the Aston Martin brand. Spoiler alert: This car is expected to make a bang in 2019’s Bond 25.

Choose Aston Martin Q, the bespoke treatment that will outfit the car with soft textured surfaces, patterned stitching, custom colors and more.

Say goodbye to chrome! Dark exterior trim, including the black detail of a purselipped grille, is a style 180 for Aston Martin.

The lightweight design of MercedesAMG’s twin-turbo V8 engine—tuned to Aston Martin’s specs— ensures the new DB11 has as much pep as its V12 sibling (though 503 horsepower also comes in handy).

The engine, combined with a new and unique exhaust system, creates the glorious roar that exotic sports car owners crave.

Luxurious details cover every square inch of the interior, from fullgrain leather seats to an automated up-andaway steering column. Even closing the door is an event, thanks to suede pulls.

Radio and climate controls are adjusted through the MercedesBenz COMMAND infotainment system. In addition to the 8-inch display, the car’s other electronic highlights include a 360-degree camera and Wi-Fi.

A pair of hood vents and a black bezel around the LED headlamps are two of this beauty’s distinguishing features.

This performer is also practical. Folding side mirrors are fully automatic and have hidden LED indicator lamps.

If this car isn’t sexy enough, opt for the Volante V8. It has the same ride and features—in a convertible.

The DB11’s sculpted body is matched by the various cuts and styles of its 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels.

Whether the lights are on or off, smoked-out blade taillights give followers an aggressive stare.

Detroit IRON Vintage models, historic town, classic cars. By David A. Rose

T

here was a time when automobiles were considered just a means of transportation. They were normally black and constructed sparsely. As these machines evolved to include covered wheels, fixed tops, windscreens and comfortable interiors, they also began to come in various colors. After World War II, American auto makers even initiated two-tone paint jobs. Thus began the heyday of automobile design. All cars back then came with white wall tires and were adorned with lots of chrome. At the end of the 1950s came fins, as Detroit capitalized on the country’s fascination with jet airplanes and rockets being launched into space. These days, we have automobiles which, for the most part, all look alike. Car buyers used to anx-

38

iously await new models from car makers, but today the models barely change from year to year. Granted, current cars boast exceptional technological features, remarkable performance, handling, safety and comfort. But something seems lacking in design. For those of us who have warm memories of automobile splendor from the past and wish to revisit the icons, there are nearly 100 U.S. automobile museums and numerous private collections where they may still be seen. One of the newest, The Newport Car Museum, focuses mostly on what car folks affectionately refer to as “Detroit Iron.” This museum also happens to be located in one of the country’s most colorful and historic towns: Newport, RI. It’s best known for its grand mansions, its jazz festivals and its colonial history. Now, add cars to its long list of

“I have had an interest in cars since I was very young,” says Gunther Buerman, who with his wife Maggie founded the Newport Car Museum. “I remember before the days of television how I used to listen to Yankees games on the radio, and afterward I read magazines. Whenever I came upon an advertisement for a special car, like a Mercedes 300 SL, I would draw it. When I was a teenager I inherited a Mustang convertible from an uncle of mine, and as time passed I kept adding cars to my collection. “Years later,” he says, “while Maggie and I were sailing our boat, I said to her, ‘We’re spending most of our time sailing, so we should either sell the cars or open a museum.’ Her instant response was, ‘Yes, let’s open a museum!’” The building the couple chose, a former Raytheon campus on 17 acres, boasts a 50,000 square foot exhibit area plus 5,000 square foot event space for corporate banquets and cocktails. “We’ve been open for less than a year and have already had more than 22,000 visitors from 25 different countries,”

“Our goal from the beginning was to present visitors with a different kind of experience than they were expecting. We don’t have velvet ropes around the cars; we let people get close to look inside.” Buerman reports. “People appreciate the museum’s design, especially our mid-century furniture, which is from the same era and complements the cars on display.” On average, visitors spend two hours exploring the museum’s six galleries and experiencing its racing simulators. Its casual feel mimics the surrounding resort-town attitude, so most people come dressed in T-shirts and ready to have fun. The biggest draws are primarily the muscle cars from the 1950s and 1960s. With the Audrain Automobile Museum already in Newport, car aficionados now have two compelling reasons to visit. Jay Leno is reportedly moving to Newport, adding his own magnificent autos to the town’s growing collection. “Our goal from the beginning was to present visitors with a different kind

of experience than they were expecting,” says Buerman. “We don’t have velvet ropes around the cars; we let people roam the area on their own and they can even get close to look inside the cars. Once a month we have what we call ‘hoods up’ so gearheads can come to admire the engines of these machines. What gives us pleasure is to know that despite the divisive world we now live in, when people come here they can all enjoy the experience. We love to hear them say, ‘Wow!’” The Newport Car Museum was named as one of the “Top 10 Best New Attractions in America” by USA Today (2017) and “Best Specialty Museum” by Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England (2018). fashion’s future is

SUSTAINABLE

By Laurie Schechter

2018 has proved to be a benchmark year.

Sustainability, according to the Business of Fashion and McKinsey & Company report The State of Fashion 2018, is an ever-increasing driving force for innovation in the fashion industry. The vigor hails particularly from the luxury sector, by individual brands and large conglomerates alike. Abundant energy and resources are being applied in ambitious efforts toward a more sustainable fashion world, on many levels and with varying degrees of focus, including supply chain traceability and transparency; efficient use of water, energy and chemicals; low-impact material use and a reduction of material waste; promotion of economic health; and employment for workers. AG, for example, takes the denim manufacturing challenge, a typically notorious water, chemical and energy waste offender, and attacks it on multiple fronts. Ozone Technology minimizes chemicals and energy while cutting water consumption by 50 percent. Fabric yardage is maximized in cutting patterns to reduce fabric waste while scraps are recycled; up to 1,400 pounds per week are repurposed as home and car insulation. Eton’s belief: “The first step to a more sustainable clothing industry is to promote durable and timeless products.” In practice they closely control their supply chain, nurture long-term relationships with select manufacturing partners, employ uncompromising efforts to foster fair labor and utilize fabrics with less environmental impact and prolonged life. Fabrics they oftentimes source from high-quality finishing suppliers, certified by Sustainable Textile Production (STeP), an independent certification system for sus-

tainable manufacturing processes in the textile industry. Many brands aim to include a human as well as a merchandise aspect. Their philosophies, policies and actions integrate environmental, social, human and economic goals, bred into their company DNAs. Two notable Italian brands are among them: Brunello Cucinelli and Ermenegildo Zegna. Ermenegildo Zegna founded the brand with the view that high-quality product was closely tied to the beauty of the environment and the wellness of the people involved. This ideology lives on through Fondazione Zegna, promoting international humanitarian initiatives conserving environmental and cultural resources, cultivating sustainable development in local communities near and far, supporting scientific and medical research, and educating and training young people. Their Peru by the Fondazione Zegna provides water and improved eco-sustainability for the area where the treasured Vicuna are raised. Even Zegna’s global stores, designed by Peter Marino, include blonde wood interiors reconstituted from sawdust. Oasi Cashmere brings a new dimension in eco-sensitivity for Ermenegildo Zegna. The collection features colors derived from a sustainable dyeing process using only natural elements such as flowers, herbs, wood, leaves and roots. Inspiration came by way of the company’s Oasi Zegna, a 100-square-kilometer natural pre-

serve founded in 1993 in the mountainous region surrounding Trivero. Brunello Cucinelli’s early life in the countryside without running water or electricity, working the land with his family, planted the seed for his future sustainable pursuits and formed the very tenets of his business. “The great dream of my life has always been to work for the moral and economic dignity of mankind,” says Cucinelli. His company’s emphasis on cashmere reflects not only its focus on high quality but also cashmere’s ability to last, the symbol of its value. “It is something you can pass on to your children,” he says. Along the way he has created a corporate culture that emphasizes the community and enhances the quality of life wherever his work takes him. Whether revitalizing an entire Italian village close to home or cultivating the hyperlocal production, handcraftsmanship and sustainable sourcing of the cashmere from Mongolia and Northern India, Cucinelli is practicing his “humanistic capitalism.” Why should we care? Fashion’s status as the second-most polluting industry after the oil industry, for starters. Studies also report over 60 percent of global Millennials would spend more on brands that are sustainable. Cleaning up the fashion cycle, closing the loop from design to disposal and making it sustainable, is good for our future and good for business. So why not embrace an enhanced-value, sustainable and fashionable lifestyle when luxury designers make it easy by doing the work for us? Your future fashionable self will thank you.

In truth, the ancient practice has never been just for women. Now a new, tougher type makes that super clear.

or many men, working out means pushing ever harder, building strength and muscles and sweating a lot. That’s why so many are taking up yoga. Yoga’s physical benefits are well documented. They include better sleep, improved cardiovascular function, heightened immune-system performance and weight loss. Oh yes, and increased sexual stamina. Still, for years, fitness aficionados regarded yoga as a “feminine” practice. “For many, the idea of yoga has had an airy-fairy, stretchy, skinny, dancer, female-body connotation,” says Virginia Gallagher, founder and owner of the Hot Asana Sweat & Soul chain, which has locations in North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire and Colorado. “While a yin-style practice does have a meditative quality, a yang-style targets the muscles and blood and is a more ‘power’ approach. That’s the entry door the U.S. male population needs to get into yoga.” And ever more yoga studios are finding ways to open that door. Fierce Grace is a new yoga system that blends strength and flexibility and has taken off in the U.K. It recently opened its first U.S. studio in New York City. The hot yoga classes are geared to either gender and any age or ability level, says Kelly Isaac, co-owner of the New York studio. “Still, knowing that a lot of guys feel intimidated about attending a yoga class, we made our branding a bit macho and tongue-in-cheek—for example, photos of tattooed guys in leather doing yoga poses,” she says. “Our space is cool, open, not too pretty, and our practice is strong, and that is more appealing to guys.” Military personnel make up a big chunk of participants in Hot Flow and Heated Power Vinyasa classes at Hot Asana’s Southern Pines, N.C., studio near Fort Bragg. Gallagher also created the 21Day Power Yoga Course for Men’s Health magazine at the behest of one of her devoted clients, a sergeant in the Special Forces. “For military personnel, our approach is intense enough that it doesn’t feel unmasculine in any way,” Gallagher says. Warrior Sculpt, “a soulful yet fierce fusion of yoga and weights” offered at the national fitness chain Life Time, was also created with a holistic approach in mind. “This class filled the space in between kinds of workouts people tend to gravitate to,” says Katie Haggerty, group fitness national brand manager, who developed the program.

“There are people who wouldn’t dream of entering a yoga studio, and people who do yoga or related exercises but don’t ever get their heart rates above a certain level. In Warrior Sculpt, we have cardio and core conditioning but also yoga breath, body awareness and flexibility.” Participants are guided through equal-length segments, with a music playlist curated to motivate and inspire. “By the end, you’ve had all the benefits of mindfulness and breath-body connection—and you’re a sweaty puddle,” says Haggerty. Indeed, sweating and heat are common themes in the power yoga movement. Sweat provides the physical evidence of exertion some fitness fans crave, and heat facilitates stretching and dilates the vascular system. “Vasodilation lets blood flow more easily through the body, which is the way the body delivers nutrients to all its tissues,” Gallagher explains. Temperatures in hot yoga studios vary, but the ideal heat index—which is a calculation of the room’s air temperature and percentage of humidity—is around 110 to 112°F, Gallagher says. (The American Council on Exercise recommends drinking a lot of water and wearing comfortable form-fitting clothing that allows easy movement. Some conditions—heart or lung disease, for example—may make hot yoga inadvisable; check with your doctor.) Perhaps counterintuitively, all that exertion leads to a calmer, more peaceful approach to the rest of the day. “One woman wrote me a note telling me how her husband had changed since he began taking Warrior Sculpt,” says Haggerty. “He used to come home from work and be strict with the kids and harp about things in the house, but through the class he learned awareness and how not to bring a stressful job home with him.” Fierce Grace’s Isaac says she has seen similar effects in the executives in her own classes. “If only we could get every member of every board of every corporation to do yoga before meetings, board meetings would be much more productive—and nicer,” she says. Similar benefits are reaped by military personnel at Hot Asana, Gallagher reports. “They do incredibly challenging work, and yoga has a huge impact on the mind and spirit as well. It’s a holistic approach that, even if it can’t be articulated, is deeply felt.” Bottom line? “Drop your bias and give yoga a go,” says Gallagher. “I just turned 49, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen guys at the back of the room look at each other like, ‘Mind blown. This woman is handing me my butt, and I didn’t expect that.’”

It’s gritty. It’s grimy. And it may be just what you need to remove impurities from your skin, hair and teeth.

H

ere’s the kind of “facial” a guy can face: Charcoal, known for the briquets with which you barbecue and the sticks artists use for sketching, is being boosted these days as a skin-saving health and beauty treatment. Charcoal that’s “activated”— that is, heated with oxygen added—is said to absorb up to 200 times its weight in impurities, and that has inspired a craze several Hollywood celebs have embraced. Many spas, for example, offer a treatment that incorporates crushed black charcoal in a soft powder mask. It employs a black,

44

pudding-like substance that is applied to the face with a brush and left there for 15 or 20 minutes. It is believed to remove toxins, unclog pores, clean out blackheads, peel away dead skin cells and leave you feeling super refreshed. Scientific proof of the efficacy of this stuff? So far, it’s more or less in the spirit of Tug McGraw of the ’69 New York Mets, who said, “You gotta believe.” But dermatologists seem to agree that it does no real harm, and media folk who’ve tried it report they did come out feeling rejuvenated. There are medical precedents of a kind, as emergency room doctors sometimes administer a charcoal paste for certain types of overdoses, relying on the porous charcoal to trap toxins and keep the body from absorbing them. And some studies have shown that activated charcoal supplements may help reduce indigestion and intestinal gas. Fans of charcoal’s “beauty” benefits praise the cleaning and exfoliation effects of charcoal masks, and of course—this being the age of specialization—there are different treatments with different emphases: a mask aimed primarily at absorbing oil, for example, another that’s all about optimal skin texture and a third that’s a big-time acne cop. (If you have facial hair, you’ll want to exempt those zones of the face.) And the treatments require no downtime afterwards. Does the hot trend stop with the skin? You know it doesn’t. Some blogs insist that sprinkling a bit of black charcoal powder on your toothbrush before you brush can actually make teeth whiter. There are charcoal-fueled shampoos for shimmering hair, deodorants to banish B.O., and carbon peels to reduce disfiguring spots of pigmentation. (You’ll need to consult a dermatologist here.) Is charcoal worth the fuss? They say “beauty”—or rugged handsomeness—is only skin deep. But after all, it’s your skin— and hair and teeth—that people see.

LIVING

Self-help from 2,000 years ago. By Christian Chensvold

When we complain that our educational system

doesn’t equip young people with the skills they need for life, we usually mean pragmatic things. You know, stuff that reflects the ever-fluctuating needs of the job marketplace and innovations in technology. And since there’s only so much time in the school day, it usually means cutting back on the arts and humanities, because, as many argue, what good does that stuff do in the real world anyway? It turns out quite a bit. You can have the most mar-

48

ketable business skills in the world, but it won’t matter if you can’t manage life itself. It’s the game we all have to play—a kind of decathlon of work, love, friends, family, meaning, purpose, etc.—and being great at one and terrible at all the others won’t bring you peace and happiness. Fortunately, there’s a life manual written nearly 2,000 years ago with some of the most timeless wisdom ever committed to parchment. It’s the one self-help book everyone should own, and a powerful argument for the value of what was once known as a liberal education. The wise sage is named Epictetus (pronounced epicTEET-us), and he lived in the Roman Empire during the second century AD. He’s associated with the school of thought known as Stoicism, which encouraged one to take a detached attitude toward life, withstand adversity and pursue the highest virtues. Its chief shortcoming is an emotionless means of coping with worldly attachments. Lost your wife in a tragic accident? Well, she had to go sometime, and you can always find another. You get the idea. But at its best Stoicism provides the kind of practical everyday advice that will keep your temper intact, blood pressure low and digestion running smoothly. And nowhere is it better expressed than in the precious thought of Epictetus, which was taken down by one of his pupils. A few years ago, the work was given a freeform interpretation by Sharon Lebell under the title The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness and Effectiveness. Consisting of pithy tidbits of wisdom, it’s the perfect book to keep ever-handy and take a minute to read each morning before venturing out into the world. Here are some samples: Things themselves don’t hurt or hinder us. Nor do other people. How we view these things is another matter. It is our attitudes and reactions that give us trouble. As you think, so you become. Most of what passes for legitimate entertainment is inferior or foolish and only caters to or exploits people’s weaknesses. Avoid being one of the mob who indulges in such pastimes. Your life is too short and you have important things to do. Regardless of what is going on around you, make the best of what is in your power, and take the rest as it occurs. As you see, the crux of Epictetus’ thought centers around one very simple premise: taking responsibility for that which you can control, and letting go of that which you can’t. Epictetus’ belief that while you can’t control external events, you can control your internal reaction to them, would resurface in Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the line, “Nothing’s good or bad but thinking makes it so,” and in the middle of the 20th century would become the foundation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the field of psychology. So take charge of your life and give Epictetus a try. It should quickly become clear where you should be spending your time and energy.
