MY START WITH FTR

by Laura Fong-Yee

I thought I would share a funny story of my beginning with FTR. I signed up for my first hare scramble in 2017 after I had only been riding a dirt bike for ten months. I was on a Honda CRF150RB and I looked like a circus bear on that bike. I had no idea what to expect at the hare scramble because I did not know anyone who had participated that I could ask for advice.

My first race was CFTR (Bartow) in Women B. I didn’t even know there was a Beginner class because I probably would have done that instead. I remember being miserable after the practice lap, so I planned to only do one lap in the race. Well, I did not know where to exit after my first lap, so I ended up starting a second lap. A short while into the second lap I found a track worker at a water crossing. Of course, I fell over twice in the water trying to get to him. I told him I only wanted to do one lap and wanted to exit the track. He called on the radio for someone to guide me back to the pit area.

Determined to do better, I entered another hare scramble. It was Hog Waller and I finished fourth. I felt accomplished and hungry for progression. Here I am into my fourth season. I was promoted to Women A in the middle of last season and even bought a toy hauler for the races.

To think I almost quit hare scrambles after my first one. I’m glad I stuck it out because FTR is a great organization. I’m happy to have met so many good people. Great memories made and good times had. I look forward too many more seasons braapping with FTR.
