DIVA / IDEAS STUDENT SESSION I FINAL EXHIBIT FALL 2018

CORRIDOIO FIORENTINO DIVA Corso dei Tintori, 21 Firenze Opening Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 6:00pm

Photographs from the students of the Fall 2018 - Session I - class of “Landscape and Architectural Photography”. Instructor: Marco Gualtieri. Intermediate level students advanced their knowledge of the principles of digital photography and acquired the foundation of their visual vocabulary. Students applied the techniques developed during the course to a specific photographic genre: Landscape and Architectural Photography. Making the most of the exceptional environment that Florence and the Tuscany region have to offer the students explored the urban and natural landscapes in order to create a cohesive photographic portfolio. In this exhibit we present a selection of their achievements.

ELEMENTS Stories of matter “In the visible world, the Milky Way is a tiny fragment; within this fragment, the solar system is an infinitesimal speck, and of this speck our planet is a microscopic dot. On this dot, tiny lumps of impure carbon and water, of complicated structure, with somewhat unusual physical and chemical properties, crawl about for a few years, until they are dissolved again into the elements of which they are compounded.” - Bertrand Russell. Photography has the ability to capture the extremely small and the extremely large with various degrees of detail. The challenge landscape photographers are always facing is how to reproduce the reality that they see in front of them: clear and sharp, or hazy and opaque? The students in the Fall 2018 intermediate level Landscape and Architectural Photography class, taught by Professor Gualtieri, have explored the space around them, both natural and urban, and recorded the elements of the atmosphere created by the light, with its changing and ephemeral qualities. The viewers will engage in a visual journey that will make them feel part of the landscape.

ESSENCE My aim is to showcase my perspective of the city of Florence. Being an outsider in a foreign country, I want to explore the feelings and moods that accompany travelling and being away from the familiar. I aspire to leave fragments of myself and my thoughts in my images. I have a questioning personality and I hope these images will leave the audience asking their own questions. Specifically, I want to target the strange feelings of belonging and alienation, and how both these emotions can be felt simultaneously. I want to explore the realm of realizations as well as understanding one’s own place in the world. In the end, I would like my work to be a unification of several emotions that are shared by all of us. I plan on capturing the essence and aura of a city like Florence and blend that with emotions felt by someone who feels like an outsider.

ALTERNATE REALITY THROUGH ARCHITECTURE I want to explore the creative photographic experience of composite imagery using architectural elements combined to form an alternate reality. I may put windows, doors, graďŹƒti, lights, fi xtures, etc. in places that they normally wouldn’t exist. With this technique I may warp, bend, shrink, enlarge, or alter the images to create an abstract view of an alternate reality. This work will be an extension of my previous series by expanding on the scope of my psychedelic style. Donald Blair was born in 1978, and has been traveling the planet since early childhood. For the past 3 years he has traveled non-stop, studying art in prominent universities around the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. His artistic style has been heavily influenced by traveling the world, and also by his abundant psychedelic experiences that opened the vale of this reality into a spiritual cosmos of undefined wonders. Being raised by his mother who is also an artist, graphic designer, photographer and more, Mr. Blair has lived in a world immersed in the arts and a life of creative experiences since his birth.

FLARE The objective of my final project is to capture images around Florence under specific lighting fi xtures. The source of these lighting fi xtures will be from the sun. Optimally shot an hour before sunset, all the images will possess a flaring quality. The ultimate goal of this flare is to create a luminous and godly eect on the subject matter.
