“To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.” William Blake
Human-beings are creators of gardens in the same way that they are storytellers.
A garden is an enclosed place. A garden needs a frame if it is to be called a garden. The garden is the moment when a space becomes a landscape. The garden is the germ of a settlement: the village, the town, the city and the nation.
The garden, we might be inclined to say, is neither completely natural nor fully human. It is an ancient longing, a feeling we search for within ourselves and seek in the physical world.
The students of Advanced Digital Photography class have collected moments that are always suspended but never decisive, as though tiny doors have opened onto eternity. They built their own gardens in order to give real substance, whether passing or enduring, to a lost world within themselves that fills the mind with longing.
These photographs embody the delicate tensions that occur in space and time; depict the space between two hands; a ray of light on a twisted branch; a twig caught in a wire fence; or the softest and most simple melody of home that welcomes us.
