The work of the Fine Arts students will be exhibited in Corso Tintori 21, at Corridoio Fiorentino. Though all their pieces are made by different artists who explore different mediums, draw inspiration from different concepts, and create in unique ways, their art draws on the same themes. The pieces all center around Leonardo da Vinci and the overarching theme of humanism. Ranging from classes in interior design, digital and fashion photography, to graphics and darkroom work - the students of Fine Art have come together to put on a thematic and cohesive exhibition. The students themselves have described their works as tender, graphic, and inspired. The mind of Leonardo da Vinci and his impact on both the artistic and scientific worlds inspired the work of the young artists. The balance that these artists are able to strike, between the scientific process of creating a piece of art and the creative process that follows, is done perfectly. Understanding both their own respective mediums as well as pulling from their own creativity and the inspiration of Leonardo makes these artworks truly innovative and inspired. Exhibiting these works together, which are tied by a synthesis of innovation and inspiration, is the aim of this entire collection.
Apre mercoledì 5 dicembre durante l'AperiArt di Ganzo, il creative learning lab di Apicius, la mostra finale degli studenti di Fine Arts del semestre Fall 2018. Dagli allievi di livello principiante alle classi più avanzate, durante questi mesi tutti hanno avuto il privilegio di apprendere in una città come Firenze, dove è facile ispirarsi all'infinita arte e architettura che li circonda. Tutti i progetti esposti hanno come tema Leonardo da Vinci e l’Umanesimo. Una selezione completa delle opere di studenti di Intermediate Drawing, Advanced Drawing, Intermediate Painting, Mixed Media and Watercolor/Tempera Gouache è stata raccolta dalle classi per creare la ricchissima mostra finale. I pezzi spaziano da autoritratti a gruppi di acquerelli astratti e collage di mixed media, tutti incentrati sulle tecniche e le idee del maestro del Rinascimento italiano Leonardo da Vinci.

Piera Bernhard Sierra Nevada College Incline Village, Nevada, USA Always Beginning 50x70 cm Charcoal Leonardo’s Humanism shined a light on reflecting what is inside ourselves instead of forever seeking solace outside oneself or in the Church. Renaissance Humanism brought focus to those beautiful contributions the common man provides in his daily life and activities. Always Beginning is a portrait of Peter Bareis; an elderly man who has worked endlessly all of his life and consistently starts new projects. He is a force so powerful as light.

Leonardo was constantly searching for the right mark and his strokes, his calligraphy, have become iconic. Through the process of automatism, I attained confidence in meaningful mark-making. Gesture emanates the spirit, which in full is universal.

Leonardo connected scientific discovery with spiritual nature, both literally and metaphysically. This print unites the present moment with the inevitable future. Gesture emanates the spirit, which in full is universal.

Nick Hill Tulsa, Oklahoma University of Tulsa Modern Vitruvian Man Oil on canvas 70x50 cm Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man encompasses the ideal proportions of man, according to Vitruvius who applied the correlation to architecture. The implications in this painting apply these concepts to not only the man, but to the community in which he or she resides and works in. The outer world of an artist is a direct representation of his or her inner conscience.

Sarah Livingston Chicago, Illinois Columbia College of Chicago Untitled 40 X 30 cm Oil Painting Da Vinci was known for studying human anatomy. I am interested in altering his images with a false or warped narrative. Adding movement or a new face will allow me to capture something beyond what the human eye can see. I believe there is a front people show the world, a mask so to speak. These paintings are meant to reveal something different than what is shown to our peers. Whether that means a new face or some abstraction of the figure I want to express this in my work.

I tried to convey the historical and cultural heritage of Italy of the high Renaissance.

Today, many researchers and art lovers of the Renaissance try to unravel the meaning of the picture, the secret messages of Da Vinci. The Basilica of San Lorenzo depicted in the background is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, the family temple of the Great Medici family. The Basilica of San Lorenzo is unique in its beauty. How many secrets and stories they carry in themselves.

Sarah Livingston Chicago, IL Columbia College of Chicago Untitled 55x40 cm Graphite Pencil on Paper I am interested in exploring the human face and the relationship between the features of two people in love. Often times couples look similar even if they have completely different heritages and basic features such as skin tone or hair color. My parents share many similar features from their eyes to their lips. Here I illustrated it in a sketchbook style study. I kept it lose and compared their individual features similarities or differences. I want to further explore human attraction and our subconscious draw towards people that look like ourselves.

Ka i t l y n Swa t r h o u t Medway, Massachusetts University of Massachusetts Amherst New Life Pen on paper 40x30 cm This piece is a copy of one of Leonardo da Vinci’s womb drawings given a contemporary Florentine context, set within the Baptistery of San Giovanni. After visiting the Baptistery, I was inspired by its stunning interior in relation to the building’s main function as a place to welcome and bless new life. The marble and gold-leaf clad decoration in combination with the sense of divine light that exudes from the row of windows below the dome create a truly beautiful experience only fitting for welcoming a precious child into the world. It seems that da Vinci was more interested in understanding and accurately portraying human anatomy than he was in human practice and experience. This piece considers both.

Maureen Gillespie Chicago, Illinois St. Norbert College Study of the Human Hand 70x50 cm I started with sketches of hands in my sketchbook of both my own and others I observed. I started the drawings by placing some of those sketches, as well as more of my own hand in different motions. The writing I did as I went was a way to jot down my thoughts as well as to mimic Leonardo Da Vinici’s sketchbook style. I shaded and added color to show the depth of the hand in the darkest shadows. Adding the pen in the last one was to show more of a sketchbook look. My drawings are based off of Leonardo Da Vinci’s sketchbook pages, particularly his study of the neck and shoulders. I chose to do a study of the hands, but with a pop aspect using unexpected color.

Luna Pellicciari Anatomy of the Invisible Mixed Technique on Paper 35x50 cm We experience more emotions than we can name those: we lack words to represent our feelings and our states of mind in their subtle nuances and mixtures. Mirroring the passion of Leonardo da Vinci’s artistic as well as scientific explorations on the rules and mysteries of the visual world, the WPE course students have focussed their creativity into formalizing a graphic language to document and represent their states of mind, feelings and emotions, as they surface and flow away during the day: in doing so, they have tried to make visible the invisible. Catching the emotions right before they fade away, recording them with analogical signs and symbols, creating what we have named an “Emotion Graph Score” that might capture their ephemeral impact on life, has been the goal, both theoretic and artistic, one that has spanned over the weeks, helping students extend their artistic and linguistic sensitivity over their unknown inner world as a subject of art.

A n e l Tu l e g e n ova Kazakhstan, Almaty Home university: DOS education Lady with an Ermine Gouache and watercolor on paper 48x36 cm My work is a concept to the work of the "Lady with an Ermine" by Leonardo da Vinci. After studying the history of the creation of this portrait, I realized what thought came to me first. I admired the portrait, I was struck by the subtle features in the appearance of both characters, between them harmony. I decided to portray the lady from a different perspective and against the background of Piazza Del Duomo in Milan.

Abigail Sanford Greeley, Colorado Colorado State University Da Vinci in Architecture Watercolor and Tempera on board 31x46 cm I am currently taking an Italian Architecture class as well as a watercolor class. It has been very interesting to me to be able to learn about Leonardo Da Vinci in both classes. Da Vinci dipped his hands in a lot of areas including architecture. He developed a 3D perspective of drawing which transformed the way future architects could depict their buildings. He also greatly appreciated the idea of the central floor plan; he considered the circle the perfect shape. I combined one of his central floor plan designs with his famous “Renaissance Man,” to emphasis Da Vinci’s infatuation with proportions and the fusion of art, science, and architecture.
