Florence Italy Fall 2018

SUNY PROG RAM December, Fall 2018

F o rewo rd This semester’s project goal is to encourage students to reflect on their personal growth and learning path during their study abroad experience at FUA. I have no doubt that you will have gained a deeper appreciation of your talents, your passions, and – why not – even your fears, as I am equally sure that you have relished the thrill that comes from overcoming a challenge all on your own, or gaining new friends in the process. It is my sincerest hope that you have enjoyed the unique pleasure of sharing a life-changing experience with another person, and that you are an emotionally richer person because of it. Each of you has expressed something about their experience in Florence in their reflections, and although everyone has had their own personal passage through Florence, I hope you will all continue to seek a life of inspiration, pursuit, and fulfilment. I would like to thank all of the students from the SUNY program for their contribution to this project and for all that their experience has brought to FUA. Although the Fall 2018 session has come to a close, you are all forever part of the FUA community, and I hope that your path through life brings you back to us one day. I wish you all the best for a bright and fruitful future. Grazie e in bocca al lupo!

Alice C in i Resident Director SUNY University Florence Program

During this semester, I have had the pleasure of studying alongside and assisting my fellow SUNY students. From our very first group meeting to hiking up Mount Etna together, I have truly seen the growth in all of us. I am so thankful to have met such an incredible group of students, who have encouraged me to live my best life; I know I will return home with this new-found perspective, and I hope you all do as well. I believe Florence will always hold a special place in all of our hearts, as it has impacted us in so many ways. This experience would not have been made possible without the amazing staff and faculty at FUA. They have shown their constant dedication to help us in any way possible, and for this, we are forever grateful. To my fellow students, I hope you take the same pride I felt in becoming a Florentine back home with you, and know that you will always have a home in this city. Alla Prossima!

STUDENT PROFILES

Nicole Rose Avana Major: Communications Home University: SUNY Cortland MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS... In the center of Florence, The Piazza della Repubblica surrounds itself with historic buildings and beautiful ancient scenery. Walking the narrow streets of the Borgo degli Albizi takes on it’s own unique appeal with some of my favorite restaurants on it. Once you hit the piazza, the shops, illuminating carousel, people strolling and enjoying the street musicians along with the amazing art is just breathtaking. I find myself wanting to pass through here everyday to admire its beauty, especially at night. It overwhelms me with joy and has impacted my experience in Florence greatly.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN...

The first time I felt like a Florentine, was sitting in a restaurant with my roommate and a group of American tourists asked for recommendations on attractions they should visit while in Florence. As we sat there with them, we were excited to elaborate on our amazing experiences thus far. We recommended restaurants, and amazing historical sites to visit. Given my short time here in Florence, it made me feel like I have lived here forever.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS‌ Upon my arrival at FUA, it was unclear as to what my career path was going to

be. I took many different courses, all within my major in communications. One course, in particular, was Introduction to Public Relations with Professor Nannini. Not thinking that I would pursue a career in public relations, taking her class and learning about her experiences in detail, I am now considering looking into internships that involve this course of work.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: Hiking the Michelangelo and seeing the David, Gucci Gardens, Shopping, especially buying a leather bag, Exploring Florence, Riding a Vespa, Traveling through Europe, Speaking Italian, Meeting new friends, Trying authentic foods.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Ushna Azeem Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS... When you’re walking the stone cobbled streets in Florence it’s almost as if you’re going back in time. One of my favorite moments was when I was sitting in Gilli drinking coffee and listening to a musician playing the violin in Piazza della Repubblica. There were people riding the carousel, and artists selling their paintings. It was one of those moments where I felt like I was truly in a European movie.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I always feel at home in Florence

when its time to eat. Back home we also take pride in our food and can spend hours talking on the dinner table. So I have always felt at home when it comes to food.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) I enjoyed my photography class the most as it pushed me to keep shooting and to explore different parts of the city. The exhibition in the end was also a great opportunity and experience. It allowed us to showcase our work and to get a glimpse at professionalism.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: A few items I had on my bucket list were: Gelato Piazzale Michelangelo Duomo

Gianna Boveri Major: Psychology Home University: SUNY Oneonta MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… Piazza Gaetano Salvamini – I love this piazza because it is in my neighborhood and now feels like home to me. I get my favorite gelato here, I go food shopping at Conad and I get my coffee and baked goods at the pastecceria and café. Our favorite bars surround the piazza as well as our favorite pizza place. I do not have to go far to find my favorite things or see the beauty of Florence.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I could navigate the side streets and avoid the touristy areas, I felt like I could finally separate myself from the tourists in the city. I also felt a sense of power when I could quickly get my

food shopping routine done at conad and use the produce sticker machine with ease.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS… Art Therapy w/ Nicoletta Salomon – A very genuine classroom where I could express my emotions while learning the practice of art therapy. She would show us her own journals and do activities along with us to show us that vulnerability is acceptable and encouraged. I was pushed out of my comfort zone for some of the assignments and this has urged me to grow as an artist and individual. I look forward to bringing art therapy to my home campus.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: Buy tomatoes at the market, drink wine at the Piazzale Michelangelo, journal in a garden, make eggplant parmesean

MY FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD/PHRASE (AND WHY) IS... Biondina – my parents and older relatives would call me this fondly as a child.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Benjamin D. Collis Major Physics Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE began at a local restaurant that my roommates and I ate dinner at within the first few weeks here. This specific restaurant is special because it was during our meal there that our friendships really took root. Additionally, it was at this restaurant that I really got to enjoy my first good taste of Italian cuisine. Thus, this restaurant holds several simultaneous but different origin stories for me.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... There is a local pizza place

that I like to go to during the day. Now, I knew absolutely no Italian when I arrived in Florence. However, over the weeks, I began to pick up certain phrases. One day at this restaurant, there were a bunch of other Americans there. I decided to order in Italian to see if I could blend in. Surprisingly, it worked. It was then that I became a Florentine.

THE BEST INSTRUCTOR THAT I HAVE HAD AT FUA WAS for my Italian language course. This professor was the best because she came to class every morning with an incredible amount of enthusiasm. Of

course, this alone did not overly enthrall me with her teaching. The fact that, surprisingly, she only got 5 hours of sleep every night is what impressed me into considering her the best teacher that I have had here.

ITEMS THAT I HAVE CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST include seeing the David, eating Florentine steak, and enjoying the incredible gelato here. M Y FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD IS… ‘prego’ because it seems that everyone always uses the word to mean anything they want.

Tracy Daley Major: Sociology Home University: SUNY Oneonta MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS... Visiting the Piazzale Michelangelo has definitely shaped my experience up to this point. Overlooking the entire city of Florence made me really reflect on the fact that I have been living in this beautiful city that is so entirely different than home and what I am used to, but yet I feel comfortable and as if I belong.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I became a Florentine when a local that I met took my friends and I out to dinner in a non touristy area. Here, I socialized with multiple locals who all accepted me right away as one of them. I used

the Italian phrases I learned in my Cultural Perspectives class to communicate and thought it was really awesome that I understood what they were saying and they understood me.

is Everything Chocolate: From Therapy to Pleasure. This is because it is a class so different than what I am used to back in the United States. It provides hands on experiences that really allows students to immerse themselves in the Italian culture through visits to different shops which allows us to communicate and expand our knowledge of the art of chocolate with locals.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Gabriel Dias Major: Business Management Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS... Via Guelfa. This is the street I find myself walking on most often and have come to be very familiar with the shops on it as well as the people that work in some of the shops. I walk along this street to get to my classes as Corso Tintori as well as Via Dell’Oriuollo, as well as to get to dinner or the supermarket. Also, the famous Academia is along Via Guelfa.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I went to a café and ordered completely in Italian the barista replied back to me in Italian. Times before this I tried ordering in Italian but the employee would notice me struggling and

speak to me in English, but this time was different and I really felt like I had become a local.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) Introduction to Photography with Simone Ballerini. I’ve always had an interest in photography and tried teaching myself how to shoot manually but taking this class has quickly expanded my skill set. Simone is a very passionate photographer and he understood we were novices and explained all the key concepts patiently, and made sure we understood what we were doing before moving on to the next concept.

Kennedy Dukes Major: Health Science Home University: Stony Brook University MY BIGGEST POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… Piazza Della Signoria

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) My favorite instructor

is Professor Nannini because I liked being able to present my ideas with the other students in the experiential learning component of my class. She also encouraged me to attend more school events.

“Perfecto” because it looks cool.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I started to understand why locals complained about tourists because they tend to stop in the middle of street. When I first had aperitivo I felt like a Florentine because I know that’s something that isn’t done in the states

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: So far I have been to Piazza Michelangelo and the garden below it. I still have to visit Florence Museums.

Lisa Jivin Major: Fashion Merchandising Home University: SUNY Oneonta MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… the Ponte Vecchio. I know that everybody says it, but for me it really is. When I go to this spot I feel a sense of security. It reminds me of the rivers by my house in the states, and it reminds me of the feelings I get when I am there. Right from the start this landmark has helped Florence feel like my home away from home.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN… Initially it was hard for me because the locals knew that I was an outsider from America, even when I would attempt to

use my knowledge of the Italian language. Over time, I have become more confident in the way that I can hold myself in the fashion of a local in multiple ways including my fashion, mannorisms, and in the way that I can say simple phrases such as ordering my coffee each morning.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) My best class is Visual Merchandise and Design. I am inspired by the way that this course is laid out, teaching skills and ideas that I would have never learned if I was not a member of this class. I

am learning techniques in the way that I see displays and use my creativity to create an experience for others.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: Items that I have been able to check off my Florence bucket list include: seeing the Duomo, walking to the Piazza Michaelangelo and watching the sunset, discovering my favorite coffee shops, learning how to get around on my own.

Kayla Kalsky Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My point of reference is the duomo, walking by it every day and seeing it from a distance has been very significant. The first time I saw it I was in awe and that feeling has just stuck. I tend to gravitate there when I walk around.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN… I felt like a real Florentine when I was able to know my way around and feel like I was home

MY FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD/PHRASE (AND WHY) IS... Essere al verde- to be on the green— Meaning you are out of money— This is how I feel after booking a million weekend trips and spending all of my money here.

Taylor Manfredi Major: Communications Home University: SUNY University at Buffalo MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My point of reference in Florence is the Great Synagogue of Florence. I chose this spot as my point of reference because Florence is predominately Catholic and coming from a Jewish background it’s nice and comforting to see something that relates to my roots. Every place you go in Florence is somehow tied into Catholicism and Christianity except for the Synagogue.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN

I visited Piazzale Michelangelo. When I visited this location, I looked out into the city I have grown to love and realized that I need to take in every moment while I’m here because it wont last

forever. In this moment, standing and looking over Florence, I felt home and apart of the culture I’ve been intertwined with.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) My best class so far at FUA is Everything Chocolate: From Therapy to Pleasure. I love this class because my professor is amazing and so sweet. Besides, the professor being so great, learning about chocolate and being able to try different chocolate is fantastic. Another great aspect of the class is being able to cook with chocolate and integrate it into different recipes.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST include, visiting the Duomo, going to a vineyard, visiting Piazzale Michelangelo and also eating classic Italian food.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Nicholas Marshall Major: Cinema Home University: Binghamton University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My favorite part of Florence is a park called the Strozzi Gardens. Almost every morning I wake up, go to class, get a coffee at a cafe called La Cité, get a sandwich at La Prosciutteria, then bike over to the Strozzi Gardens. The park is pretty far from the city center and out of the way for most tourists. It’s a beautiful park, and I go there very often to read and do work.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I felt as though I became a Florentine when I bought a bicycle at a local bike shop.

Riding it around the city has helped me get to know it a lot better and makes me feel as though I am one of the locals. I’ve been able to explore a lot of spots that I would never go to if I was just walking.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) I really enjoy introduction to darkroom photography. The darkroom at FUA is beautiful and the instructor, Marco, is a very good teacher. It’s very nice having all of the equipment I need to develop and print film, because outside of school it’s a luxury that I don’t have.

Amal. Amal is one of the many gelato places near my apartment. I often go to Amal to do my schoolwork and study. I consider Amal my point of reference because it’s somewhere I can go and spend time on my own and get some work done. I also enjoy the familiarity of the workers, who are extremely nice and give me and my friend extra gelato.

Marco Gualtieri. Marco’s photography lessons were easy to understand and his funny comments made the class interesting. He was also very helpful with offering open darkroom/lab hours and was even available after class most times. The darkroom experience with Marco Gualtieri is one that I will not forget.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Julianne Mirmina Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS... My point of reference in Florence is finding my local cafe/gelato spot. At home on the SBU campus I loved finding a place or study spot that’s unique and comfortable. At this specific little shop I found comfort and even started to get to know the people who worked there. This seemingly small addition to my daily life in Florence made my study abroad experience amazing.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I became a Florentine when I finally figured out how to

navigate the grocery store. Originally I found this weekly visit difficult and almost intimidating but, finally mastering it made me feel at home.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS… My favorite class would have to be my photography class, From Digital to Darkroom, learning how to take pictures with film and develop/enlarge them was especially fun and I loved every second of it. I had to step out of my comfort zone to fulfill certain assignments which ended up being a very positive experience. It inspired me to

continue film photography as a hobby in the future.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: See the Duomo, Going inside Santa Croce, Make an Italian Friend, Learn a little more Italian, and Trying new and different types of wine.

MY FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD/PHRASE (AND WHY) IS... My favorite Italian phrase is “cane che carino”, I love seeing all of the dogs walking around Florence.

Teresa Parisi Major: Psychology Home University: University of Delaware MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My point of reference has become the Santa Croce Basilica. I live on Corso Tintori, so seeing Santa Croce has become very comforting for me. Seeing the church on my walk home from the train station after a long weekend of travelling, or from the view from Bardini Gardens gives me a sense of home that I would not have if I didn’t live near Santa Croce.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I was able to give tourists help when they were confused in Florence. For example, I was in Conad once and an American woman was confused why the cashier wouldn’t allow her to purchase her apple. Even though it was a very small feat,

being able to explain what she did wrong to her allowed me to make a connection to the Florentine culture, while also referencing my American culture.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) My favorite instructor was Melissa Rossi. She was my instructor for both cross cultural and social psychology. Psychology is my major so obviously I love it, but she makes class interesting and relatable, and makes my 10 hour-straight class day so much more bearable. She can explain culture shock to us really well since she’s originally from America. I’ll definitely miss her back in the US.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: Eat lots of gelato, Piazzale Michelangelo, the Duomo, Boboli & Bardini Gardens, so much pasta! learned key Italian phases, learned my favorite places to get lunch (shoutout to Pino), travelled around the country and the continent, meet locals, travel outside city center in Florence, find amazing friends that will last a life time!!!

MY FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD/PHRASE (AND WHY) IS... Arrivederci! Before I left, my grandma got a cake and it said “Arrivederci.” It’s more fun way of saying goodbye than plain old “ciao.”

Danielle Pinna Major: Business Management Home University: Farmingdale State College MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS…

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN...

Piazzale Michelangelo, hiking up the Michelangelo and seeing the view holds a specific reference to me. Being able to see all of Florence out in front of you was surreal. Me and my roommates went there one of the first weeks here, and we didn’t take the view or our location for granted even for a second. We sat on the steps until the sun went down and just took in the amazing view of our new home.

I became a Florentine when I could walk around the city alone and without a map. This did take a while but I felt part of the community when I had a purpose and location. I love knowing my favorite restaurants and places to go while still having new places to try. I love having a regular breakfast or coffee spot. I love passing by a store every day and greeting the owners with “Ciao”.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) The best class is hard to choose for me. I’ve learned a lot about business from my Entrepreneurial Marketing Experiential Learning class. Although, my Retail Management class has helped lead me in the direction of my career path. These classes have helped me in many different ways about what I want to do in my career path in terms of business while teaching me in the subject from teachers who have business ownership experience.

Melissa M. Pistor Major: Agricultural Business Management Home University: SUNY Cobleskill MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My point of reference in Florence is actually FLY the fashion school in FUA. Coming from an agricultural background, studying fashion in Italy has been challenging for me. Marysol (FLY lab assistant) and my peers in class have helped make this experience exciting and rewarding.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I became a Florentine when my next-door neighbor helped my roommates and I. She was so friendly and welcoming and let us know if we needed anything else to knock on her door. It was nice to hear this, since it was during our first week and I was so nervous.

Rosa Portaro Major: Business Management Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My point of reference in Florence is a small area outside of the city centre Called Bellosguardo. It is a decent walk away, but is filled with beautiful scenery and an amazing park. Every day here in Florence is a new adventure, there are so many places to see and new people to meet. All within a short distance away.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... When I ate my first Lampredotto sandwich. A Florentine tradition, which is pieces of stomach of a cow on a roll. It was delicious,

and I felt like a true local while eating it.

Madeleine Porter Major: Communication major and Sociology Minor Home University: SUNY Brockport MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… On one of my first days in Florence, I went out of my apartment without relying on a GPS to navigate, I just wandered along to the Arno River. I found a small garden square and spent quite a bit of time there reading and writing. I found myself coming back to the park many times since that day, because it is a quiet area relatively close to my apartment, with an amazing view of the river and the mountains behind.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... Going to the Sant’Ambrosio market each week has helped me feel like a part of the local community, because I’m surrounded by native

Florentines and usually don’t hear any English around me. Being able to effectively communicate, even if its just understanding and responding to simple questions, has made Florence feel like home.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) Marco di Manno is my favorite professor at FUA, he teaches in a way that keeps class interesting yet fun at the same time. We’ve touched on Italian history, culture and traditions, gestures, geographical differences in Italy, and more. I feel like I’ve learned so much about Italian culture and language through taking the Cultural Perspectives class, and I’ve really enjoyed it each week.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: Experiencing the Duomo, the Boboli and Bardini gardens, visiting the fresh fruit and vegetable markets every week, and learning about the different neighborhoods in Florence through the city walks. I’ve also really enjoyed trying authentic Florentine food such as tagliatelle funghi porcini e tartufo, which has become one of my favorite dishes.

MY FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD/PHRASE (AND WHY) IS... Allora. It surprised me that it was the equivalent of saying “well…,” or “so,” because it sounds so much nicer, so I find myself saying it quite a bit.

It is a quaint, coffee shop with delicious pastries cappuccinos. I think also a reason why I enjoy going there so much is because it reminds me of the coffee shop I would sit at at home. I think I really enjoy this place besides the fact it reminds me of home, is because you are surrounded by local Italians in this cafe. It is just a very friendly, warm environment. I have gone their to enjoy coffee with friends,

Another point of reference that is true for everybody is the duomo. I have not been inside it yet, but it the center of everything and I find myself referring to it when I am in class, out to eat, or on my way to the train station. The duomo has been the center point of many of my exciting experiences here in Florence.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN… I finally realized the way this beautiful city is set up and no longer had to look on my phone

My professor for my Literature of the Grand Tour of Italy class, Simonetta Ferrini, is definitely my favorite professor because she finds ways to make the class interesting and often gives suggestions as to what parts of Florence and Italy are worth visiting.

Vorrei, it’s the word I’ve been using the most so far.

ITEMS CHECKED OFF MY FLORENCE BUCKET LIST: I got to see the David and visit Santa Croce, I haven’t gotten much done from Florence but those were two of the main objectives.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Rebecca Santoiemma Major: Sociology and Communications Home University: SUNY Oneonta MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS‌ My point of reference in Florence is the piazza della Passera. It is right around the corner from my apartment on Via Toscanella over the Ponte Vecchio. On sunny days, which we have been very lucky with so far this semester, I sit on the benches for hours, appreciating my life. There are usually live performers making it very lively and entertaining. Being that it is across the bridge from many of the tourists, it is very peaceful and relaxing.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I became a Florentine about half way through September when I finally started learning my way around and became comfortable with the area. I got used to the cultural differences and began adapting to the Italian lifestyle. The very mellow and easygoing vibes that locals present make me feel welcomed and homey.

These roads even lead towards the Duomo, which is another point of reference that I use to get around. It’s also always a great sight to see.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN… I felt truly involved in the local community as I began to be recognized at my local c a fé. I also felt ingrained in the culture when I had conversations with locals in Italian, and when I visit the different small markets around Florence.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY)

MY FAVORITE ITALIAN WORD/PHRASE (AND WHY) IS…

The class that I most enjoyed during my time at FUA was my Travel Writing class. In it we explored a lot of interesting histories and concepts, and I was encouraged to explore Florence and the surrounding area. I also got to write a biofiction which I thought of as a unique and fun assignment.

“in bocca al lupo” because of how much cooler the literal meaning is than the English equivalent.

MY PATH THROUGH FLORENCE

Ashley Chiara Searing Major: Sociology with a concentration in Criminology Home University: SUNY Oneonta State MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… The most magical place in Florence for me is Piazza Michelangelo. I love going up there and seeing the whole city of Florence. It makes me appreciate how lucky I am to study aboard in such an amazing city!

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN... I became a Florentine when I was able to give tourists directions on how to get to a specific point. But I felt most at home when I found local stores that I go to all the time.

Samantha Suriani Major: Italian Studies Home University: Stony Brook University MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN FLORENCE IS… My point of reference in Florence is definitely the Duomo. During the first weeks here, if I would ever get lost walking around the city, I would always find my way back by following the golden tip of the Duomo. There are so many different alleys and streets that lead to the Piazza del Duomo that make navigating your way around very easy. Regarding a place that holds a specific meaning to me, I would have to choose Piazza Santo Spirito. The entire piazza turns into an open market in the mornings but then becomes quiet enough to be able to pass an afternoon reading.

I BECAME A FLORENTINE WHEN...

I would say that I became a Florentine when some locals had mistaken me for being a native because I was able to converse with them. I always order and try to communicate with locals solely in their language because it is the best way to practice, and it also shows them that I respect their culture.

THE BEST CLASS/INSTRUCTOR AT FUA WAS (AND WHY) My favorite class at

FUA was my teaching internship. As an Italian major in teacher preparation, this internship was perfect for me, as I was able to practice my Italian with the children and further my knowledge of maintaining a classroom. Through observing

and assisting the teacher, I am confident that my Italian fluency has improved, and I have learned new methods on controlling a class.

once a week and every time we go the owner waits on us himself. Every week he gives us updates on his week, how his family is doing, his plans for the weekend, and we do the same. Having this personal connection and sharing our memories with a local has made me feel more at home here.
