Stony Brook University FLORENCE ITALY SPRING 2016 PROGRAM
Introduction STO NY B ROOK UNIVERSITY PROG RAM S p r in g 2 01 6
This semester’s project is a reflection on the experience at FUA as a journey of discovery and growth. Each perspective is unique but each student expresses a desire for exploration through this experience, both internally and externally. Despite different perceptions, a common thread is the engagement with both the community and with FUA. I would like to thank all of the students from the Stony Brook University program for their contributions to the project and for all that their presence has brought to FUA. Although the Spring 2016 session has come to a close, you are all forever part of the FUA community. I hope that your experience has broadened your vision of life and I wish you all the best for a bright and dynamic future. In bocca al lupo!

Alessandra Spada Major: History Home University: Binghamton University
My greatest discovery in Florence was being able to find my way home by myself at the end of the day. I never thought that I would be able to know the city, as well as being able to get around alone. I became a Florentine when I went into a store across the street from my apartment and the man who worked in the store recognized me as his neighbor. It was interesting because it made me feel that I was really a part of my neighborhood, and that it has become my home. My favorite class at FUA was three-week intensive Italian with Dario D’Ambrosio. Dario made it really interesting and easy to sit through class for so long and so early in the morning. I also learned a lot of valuable information for my first few weeks in Florence.
Alexa Fitzgerald Major: Nursing Home University: Farmingdale State
My greatest discovery in Florence was learning that I’m able to live in this beautiful city by myself, away from my family and cultural norms at home. The city is so welcoming and bright that I didn’t feel out of place once. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: climbing the Duomo, shopping in the fresh markets, buying leather goods My favorite Italian word/phrase is “mi piace il gelato e la pizza!”.

Alexis Ortiz Major: Sociology Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence was jogging down the Arno and ending up in San Jacopo Al Girone. I didn’t know where I was going or where I’d end up, but that was the most exciting part. Sports night has the most meaning to me because I get to connect with my life back home through football and it helps me integrate with Italian culture. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: jogging to an unknown place, trying Gusta’s pizza, playing football with Italian locals at Piazza Massimo D’Azeglio, watching a Fiorentina football match My favorite phrase is “va bene” because it’s the first phrase I used with my Italian mother as part of FUA’s Italian Family Club.
Alison Van Glad Major: Sociology Home University: University At Albany
I discovered that I feel safe and at home in the Florentine community. Doing everyday things, such as going grocery shopping or going for a walk in the park, makes me feel more like a local. Marta Russo is one of the best professors I have ever had, including those at my home university. She cares what everyone one in the class has to say. She is very open to talking about Italian and American culture and history and comparing the two. I feel like her Cultural Prospectives course is very useful for real life situations. She is very fair with her assignments and loves to include everyone in discussion.
Amanda May Major: Environmental Studies Home University: SUNY Cortland
I became a Florentine through my particpation in Italian Family Club through FUA’s Student Life Department. I went to my Italian family’s house and we cooked a traditional Italian meal. It was something I always wanted to do. We went shopping for fresh foods first, then we cooked for hours. We made vegetables, pasta, and beef, but my favorite was the tiramisu. The meal was delicious and I loved the whole experience. The best instructor I had at FUA is Fiona Gillespie. I am taking her Sustainable Tourism class which counts towards my major. The class is very interesting and challenges me intellectually. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: watched the sunset, explored the Oltrarno, became part of FUA’s Italian Family Club, had interesting conversations with a local cafe owner
Amie Bicocchi Major: Criminal Justice and Psychology Home University: SUNY Plattsburgh
The best class/instructor at FUA was my International Organized Crime class with James H. Lynch. I fell in love with this class from day one. It is so interesting learning about organized crime in Italy compared to the US and other countries. My professor is involved with the government so we hear about his personal experiences as well. My favorite Italian phrase is “buongiorno”. It is simple, but I like it because it’s more of a proper saying than “ciao”. Most of the café workers reply more enthusiastically when I say this in the morning rather than just “ciao”.

Anna Nicole Sandler Major: Psychology Home University: SUNY Plattsburgh The most important thing that I have learned during my time in Florence is how to coexist with locals, tourists, and everything inbetween. My favorite class at FUA was Cultural Perspectives with Marta Russo. Marta is so sweet and personable. The best part is the Monday night walks which show us different historical areas in Florence. That class is not only interesting but also very useful for learning about where we live, the norms here, and the city’s past. My favorite Italian phrase is “grazie mille!” I don’t speak much Italian so I appreciate being able to express my gratitude to people..
Anthony DiClemente Major: Business Marketing Home University: Stony Brook I became a Florentine when I went to go play basketball by the river one day. Three guys a little older then me came to play a little after. They all spoke the slightest of English. I spoke as much Italian as I could. We ended up all playing together for an hour or so, laughing, and having a good time even with the language barrier. My best class was Italian Product Knowledge with Vittoria Vismara. Considering it was mainly for culinary art majors, I had little experience and was slow picking up on basic information. I took the class because it seemed interesting, and regardless of my lower skill level they made me feel right at home. The class had complete patience while walking me through what was probably a beginner lesson for them. I couldn’t have asked for more.
Anthony Marrano Major: Accounting Home University: University at Buffalo
The first time I felt at home in Florence was during a class field trip to Calcio Strorico. This event was similar to rugby and soccer except that there are much less rules. For the first time since I left home I was in the moment, and I was completely intrigued with what was going on around me. My favorite class is Sports Management with Fabrizio Polloni. His entertaining stories and experience in the sports world makes the class very enjoyable and fun. My favorite Italian phrase is “quanto costa? mainly because I use this so often.
Ariana Naim Major: Accounting Home University: University at Buffalo
My greatest discovery in Florence so far has been my appreciation for the culture and the architecture. Santa Croce is a spot with particular meaning to me because it is located near my apartment and it is a magnificent church. Within the first 3 weeks, I would have considered myself at home in Florence. I love the local culture in this city and the amazing food everywhere I go. Once I was able to live a normal life after my initial adjustment period is when I considered myself more of a Florentine. Fabrizio Polloni is my favorite instructor at FUA because he teaches a very hands-on course that I take. We are in the process of planning a marathon through the city of Florence for the students at FUA. This has been my most enjoyable class experience.

Ashley Andreaggi Major: Business Management Home University: Stony Brook University I became a Florentine when I played pickup soccer with Italians. I went to Piazza Massimo D’Azeglia with a couple friends to kick the ball around, and we ended up playing pickup with the Italians that were already using the field. They were all really talented and it was definitely a fun time. I think by the end they respected us more because we won a fair amount of games! The best class would have to be my Shoah: History of the Holocaust class because of how much I’m learning and how interesting the topic is. I’m glad that the class delved deeper into parts of the Holocaust that have not been thoroughly talked about in classes I’ve taken in the U.S. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: have Italian gelato, play soccer with Italians, meet my Italian relatives, see the Duomo
Bianca Rosa Major: Biology Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence was myself. Being on my own in a foreign country in a culture I am not familiar with truly made me figure out who I was. I was meant to be here studying abroad to figure out who I am as a person. I became a Florentine when I was accepted into FUA’s Italian Family Club. Having a group of people in Florence that I can call my family really made me feel like I fit in here. They treat me like I am part of the family and it makes me feel really special. My favorite Italian phrase is “La vita è bella”... life is beautiful!
Brianna Licari Major: Nursing Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence was the Piazzale Michelangelo. Here, I was consumed in how grateful I was to be here, and all of the adventures to be had during the semester. My best class at FUA is Cultural Perspectives with Marta Russo. She makes the class exciting to attend and we have learned things that greatly influence our time here. The city walks on Monday classes helped me learn to navigate Florence more easily and gave me knowledge to share with those who come to visit me here, as well as with my family and friends back home. My favorite Italian phrase is “in bocca al lupo” which means good luck.
Brittany Hayes Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University My favorite class at FUA was Love Sex and Marriage in Renaissance Italy with Martina Ghiandelli. What I enjoyed about this class was going on many walking tours rather than just sitting in class being lectured at. I am a visual learner, so being able to see what we are learning about first hand is amazing to me. For all of my college career in the U.S., I’ve been used to seeing powerpoint after powerpoint with teachers reading off the slides. I can see in the way Martina talks during the tours just how passionate she is about the history here. She is incredibly helpful when it comes to questions or concerns about the class and projects. She is more than willing to help and wants you to do well. I will miss her class the most. Some items checked off my Florence bucket list are: learning new Italian words/phrases, traveling, integrating into Italian culture, and stepping out of my personal comfort zone.

Cara McBride Major: Criminal Justice Home University: SUNY Albany The time I’ve spent in Florence has taught me a lot about myself. It has shown me that I am capable and strong enough to live on my own. It has also taught me how to budget my money and spend it wisely. I became a Florentine when I had to go food shopping for the first time. It was the first time that I felt like I was part of the local community. It was a very confusing experience the first time around, but now that I go at least once a week it has become a lot easier. I get to socialize with the workers and the other shoppers in the store who are part of the community. My best class by far at FUA is International Organized Crime class with Professor James Lynch. He makes the class interesting and entertaining, especially for a 9am. He always keeps the whole class engaged and does his best to portray the information we need to know in a clear cut manner. His work load is very reasonable. I enjoy going to his class every Wednesday morning!
Caryn Byllott Major: Contract Home University: SUNY New Paltz I became a Florentine when I enjoyed an evening with a group of Italians, preparing a large feast of sausages and ribs, enjoying a glass of wine, and conversing about our cultures in the home of an Italian friend whom I have become close with while here in Florence. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: going to the various historical museums, enjoying traditional Florentine dishes My favorite Italian phrase is “posso accarezzare il cane per favore” which means “can I pet your dog, please?”
Cassandra Goldman Major: Biology Home University: SUNY New Paltz My time in Florence has taught me that I can live a much more simple life than I do back in the States. Being confined to one suitcase for my whole semester has limited me to the bare necessities, and that has really helped me as a person. I have become less attached to material items and more focused on my everyday life and the experiences that I have throughout the day. I am very fond of the Italian word “prego. I like that word because it is used all the time for different situations, like answering the phone. I always enjoy words that have multiple uses and meanings.
Catherine MacLeod Major: Economics Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence so far was the top of Piazzale Michaelangelo. It was amazing to climb up the hill and see the entire city laid out in front of me. Whoever has come to visit me, including my family and friends, I have taken to Piazzale Michaelangelo to share the amazing view of the city! My favorite instructor at FUA is Marta Russo. Marta was always so excited to teach us about Italian culture and language in class. She was very willing to help with anything we needed with regards to fitting in and learning about Italian culture.
FLORENCE SPRING 2016
STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
Chujing Chen Major: Art History Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery is that Florence is a Renaissance city that still maintains its historical value to the people who live here. History seems stopped, but the culture produces a contradiction between old and new, and new ideas and value emerge within the antique surroundings. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: discovering the Duomo, trying T-bone steak (bistecca fiorentina), seeing Michaelangelo’s David, exploring the small streets everywhere in the city, seeing Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo della Signoria
Constantine Diakakis Major: Business, Specialty in Marketing Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence is understanding how to live life to the fullest. Living life the Italian way, I learned how to relax and live a little less stressful. I realized that life isn’t just about succeeding for the future, but also enjoying the present every step of the way. I became a Florentine when I went a whole day without speaking English to anyone besides my friends. From ordering food and a cappuccino for breakfast to a threecourse meal for dinner, I felt part of the Florentine life as I practiced their lifestyle and spoke Italian language. It was a little difficult, but I managed and felt as part of the community.
Dana Schechner Home University: SUNY Oneonta My greatest discovery in Florence was just this past weekend, it was 75 degrees and as we were walking, we found a sandy area filled with locals along the Arno river. At that exact moment, I noticed how in love I am with the city of Florence and how I hope to live here in the future. I became a Florentine when the place I regularly visit for lunch started calling me “Miss salad” because I only order salads. The best class/instructor at FUA was Celcia Ricci because she is a great professor and extremely compassionate. The (Mediteranean Diet) class is also includes food tasting every week, what could be better than that?
Danielle Ashley Raymond Major: Business Management with a concentration in Operations & Supply Chain Home University: University at Buffalo My greatest discovery in Florence is my new found sense of independence. I became a Florentine when I traveled for the first time outside of Florence and when I returned, it truly felt like home. I finally knew my way around the city and appreciated Florence as a place where I was comfortable living. My favorite Italian phrase is “mi manchi” which means “I miss you.”

Danyelle Ketring Major: Antropology Home University: SUNY Plattsburgh My favorite instructor at FUA is Umberto Gori. I have never met anyone like Umberto. He is such a pleasant teacher and he doesn’t have to say anything funny, I just have a huge smile on my face every class. He forces us to walk outside, and I have never learned this much in such a short time. He is delightful and my absolute favorite. I look forward to his class every week. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: went to a silent film, found a secret bakery, had the best gelato ever
Emily Thomas Major: Linguistics and Italian Studies Double Major Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence was learning that I am a lot more independent than I ever thought I could be. I am capable of going out alone and exploring a city and culture completely new and foreign to me and loving every second of it. It’s hard to pick my favorite class at FUA! I love my history class because I love looking up every day and seeing the Medici coat of arms and knowing what it means, or looking out my window at San Lorenzo and knowing ow much history is inside. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: eat a sandwich at Antico Vinaio, Basilica di San Lorenzo, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Ponte Vecchio, Mercato Centrale
Erin Krug Major: Business Economics Home University: Stonybrook program (SUNY Cortland student) My greatest discovery in Florence would have to be Piazza Michelangelo. I resort to this place when I am feeling stressed or need some activity in my routine. This view is quick to put this entire experience into perspective. With the entire city of Florence visible, it is here that I recognize just how wonderful this opportunity is. The best class that I have taken is definitely my Italian Culture and Perspectives class taught by Marta Russo. She is truly a gem. Marta’s eagerness to teach our class about the history, and culture of Italy is so genuine. I love the authenticity of her love for Florence and Italy in general. My favorite word is “Ciao!” Although simple, this word is useful in many interactions. Meaning both “hi” and “bye”, this word can basically be said in any context.
Erica Koplitz Major: Art History/ Visual Arts with a concentration in Drawing and Painting Home University: SUNY New Paltz My greatest discovery in Florence was realizing how much better at drawing I have gotten. After having to draw sculptures over and over again and visiting museums such as the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, I am constantly surrounded by art here and I have noticed a major impact on my work because of it. The best class I’ve taken at FUA is my Water color and Tempera Gouache Techniques class under Professor Andrea Mancini. He is incredibly talented and works one on one with his students with a very personal approach to teaching. My favorite Italian word is “prego” because I love its ability to be used in many circumstances, and it is also polite.

Gabrielle Palumbo Major: Advertising Marketing & Communications, Minor in Economics Home University: Fashion Institute of Technology One big discovery of mine was that the Academia Gallery is 10 steps away from where I live in Florence. I learned that I appreciate art and history more than I thought I did. This city is home to so many amazing discoveries that are sometimes right under your noise. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: going to mass, seeing all of the churches, visiting the museums, and shopping at the fresh markets My favorite Italian word is “cucchiaio” which means “spoon” but it took me forever to learn how to pronounce it so it is a little “go me” moment everytime I do.
Gina Gardini Major: Marketing Home University: Binghamton University My greatest discovery in Florence so far are the Boboli Gardens and its beautiful landscape. I love discovering new parks and small towns outside the city center to appreciate views and landscapes that I would not be able to see at home. My favorite class is Food and Culture: Anthropology of Food with Francesca Bocci. She makes the material exciting and she wants us to learn and understand the information to become more familiar with Florence and Italian food and culture as it relates to other civilizations. I’ve learned valuable information that puts my experience in historical context. My favorite phrase is “ciao ragazzi!” I hear this all the time when my friends and I leave any restaurant or establishment and it makes us feel like we were treated as guests.
Hannah Robins Major: Business Psychology Home University: Binghamton University I felt like a Florentine when I went shopping for fruits and vegetables at the Sant’Ambrogio market near my apartment for the first time. I went alone and there were no tourists. Most of the vendors spoke little English, so I had to figure out how to tell them what I wanted. My favorite class at FUA was Introduction to Nutrition taught by Karin Pantzer. I’m glad I chose this class in Italy because it’s interesting to learn about nutrition from the Mediterranean perspective. I love the way that Italians relate culturally to food and this class has been a unique way to learn about this in a formal setting. My favorite Italian word is “Allora!”
Hayley Weimann Major: Community Health Home University: SUNY Cortland My greatest discovery in Florence was when I climbed to the top of the Duomo and realized that I am living in an amazing city. Now I love to go sit on the benches near the Duomo because it always reminds me how lucky I am to be here, and how this experience has allowed me to grow as an individual. I became a Florentine when I attended a Florentine soccer game! I felt like I really became a part of the culture when I got to experience an Italy soccer game which is something Italians really love. My favorite Italian phrase is “La coca-cola con la cannuccia corta corta” which means “coca-cola with a short straw.” When pronounced it sounds really funny.

Ilona Kvasnitska Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University When I first arrived in Florence, I was definitely part of the tourist community, but a few weeks in I slowly transitioned into a Florentine. I think I officially became part of the community once I learned all the streets and the directions. Now that I know the city and how to get around, I don’t feel lost anymore, and I feel like I am part of the community. I have enjoyed all my classes in FUA. Choosing the best one is hard because each instructor in great in their own way. Every instructor is extremely passionate about what they teach and it is great to be in this kind of atmosphere.
Jacqueline Carnaxide Major: Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management Home University: SUNY Plattsburgh The best class/instructor at FUA was my Cultural Perspectives class with Marta Russo. I loved coming to this class and really enjoyed the Monday night walks as part of class. She is so educated and teaches us in a fun way and knows what she is talking about. Everything she has taught us has stuck to my brain and I really feel like I am learning something. I would recommend this class. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: Ponte Vecchio, Gusta Pizza, Santa Croce, Piazza Repubblica, Piazzale Michelangelo, and going to a Fiorentina Game. My favorite Italian word or phrase would have to be “non parlo Italiano” (I don’t speak Italian) and “Arrivederci” (see you later). I love using these two.
James Ayres Major: Business Management Home University: SUNY Stony Brook I went to the AC Fiorentina game against Napoli. I’ve always been a fan of soccer, but the experience of watching a game live surrounded by passionate fans was truly surreal. Cheering and chanting alongside other Florentines, I felt part of something bigger than myself. Soccer is cherished here in Italy, and it was amazing to see the deep relationship that Italians have with the game in person. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: climb the Duomo, go to an AC Fiorentina game, eat a lamperdotto sandwich, buy a pair of leather shoes, see Michelangelo’s David, and visit the Secret Bakery My favorite Italian phrase is “La Squadra Del Cuore.” It means “favorite team” but it has much more meaning and emotion.
Jennifer Moore Major: Speech Therapy Home University: SUNY Buffalo My greatest discovery in Florence was that getting out of my comfort zone can be a good thing. Also, being totally immersed in the Italian culture made me appreciate a different way of living but it also made me realize some things I take for granted back in the States. The best class that I had taken at FUA was the Florence Food and Culture Experience (one of the three week intensive courses). In this class we learned about traditional Italian cuisine, and the best part of the class was that we got to eat what we had cooked and baked!

Jillian Anzalone Major: Psychology & Criminology Home University: SUNY New Paltz My greatest discovery in Florence was how diverse the people are who live in the city. Even people I have met from other countries were open-minded and easy to get along with. The best instructor at FUA was Dario D’Ambrosio. He made my Italian class so fun and entertaining with the passion and energy he brought to it every day. Dario made our class smile so much, and made it a class that we looked forward to attending. My favorite Italian phrase is: “Che sarà, sarà.”
Jillian Hughes Major: International Studies Home University: SUNY Cortland My greatest discovery in Florence was realizing how successful I can be while embracing my independence. Staying four months in a place that seems so foreign to my home country was extremely overwhelming, at first. Once I became aware of my capabilities here, such as learning the language, finding my way around the city, and making new friends I was truly able to enjoy and absorb the Italian experience. Studying abroad has pushed me out of my comfort zone in so many positive ways, and I will forever be grateful for these memories. The best class I took in Florence was my Intensive Intermediate Italian course. Prior to coming to Italy, my Italian was not horrible, however, it was not great either. Within just a few days of taking this course I noticed my Italian speaking and reading skills enhance tremendously. I truly enjoy trying to speak Italian. My professor, Monica Ferrari, was a great teacher. She explained all of the lessons in an organized and understandable manner. Our trips to the markets were a fun way to learn the language and also experience Italian culture.
Joshua Fraass Major: Environmental Design and Studio Art Home University: The State University of New York at Buffalo My greatest discovery in Florence has been how much being an artist means to me. My best class at FUA was “The Mind Map of Creativity: Words, Painting, and Emotion” with Nicoletta Salomon. She really promotes individualism in art and lets us be free to do whatever we are inspired by. Art is a very important for communication and she teaches us how to make the most of it. My favorite Italian phrase is “in bocca al lupo” which means good luck, but translates to “in the wolf’s mouth.”
Julia Sciortino Major: Finance Home University: Binghamton University My greatest discovery in Florence has been to learn how to be adaptable to new people, cultures, and experiences that can be different from what I am used to. Being Italian – American and spending an extended amount of time in Italy has helped me to redefine what my identity means to me. I can see how traditions have translated over the years from the time my grandparents left Italy to immigrate to the U.S. I became a Florentine when I attended my first aperitivo with local Florentine students! Aperitivo can be associated with “Happy Hour” in the United States but with more emphasis on friendly conversation and food. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: attending a Fiorentine soccer game, going to the top of the Piazza Michaelangelo, visiting the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia di Belle Arti, and sharing a Florentine steak with my dadne steak with my dad

Leanora Karnath Major: Communication and English double major Home University: State University of New York at Geneseo One of my greatest discoveries in Florence has been learning how curiosity is such an important part of life, especially in making study abroad a more enriching experience. Living in Florence and interning at the J-school has sparked many questions about Italian culture. It has been rewarding to interview locals such chefs from Florence’s restaurants and instructors at FUA. My internship has helped me connect to the city which is very fulfilling. My favorite class instructor is Cecilia Ricci. I have enjoyed learning about Italian culture through the course Italian Vegetarian Cooking. She is extremely knowledgeable about ingredients and makes the class interactive by visiting local markets. I’ve been pushed out of my comfort zone to try new foods and develop a greater appreciation for the traditions associated with eating in Italy. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: finding my favorite panini place, eating finocchiona, seeing the Statue of David, ordering in Italian, the Mercato Centrale
Lena Menia Major: Child Care Management Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence is without question the Parco delle Cascine, a large park along the Arno River. I have fallen in love with this spot in Florence. I made sure to go to Cascine Park every day that I was in Florence. In Cascine Park, I feel a sense of tranquility and peace; the area is beautiful and allows you to lose yourself in its boundaries. I enjoyed people watching especially. You see people of all ages and walks of life and to me the Cascine Park is simply magical. The best instructor at FUA was Francesca Peruzzi because she cares about her students and took the time to get to know us. I loved that she took the class to a Museum on International Womens’ day! She showed an interest in making a mark on our experiences in Florence not just in the classroom.
Mariam Aminalhaq Major: Psychology Home University: Geneseo I felt like a Florentine when I experienced the food here. In Italy I learned that food is more than just a meal, but an experience you have with all your friends. Everyone here takes the time to enjoy the food and the great company it brings. Adding on to that, I have learned to go outside and experience the amazing culture the streets of Florence bring. My favorite class at FUA has been Cultural Introduction to Italy. My professor is energetic and creates a welcoming atmosphere for students to learn. We take city walks which makes class so much exciting and more hands on. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: experiencing authentic Florentine food, the amazing street artists and music the city has to offer, and going to countless museums
Matthew Cohen Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University I became a Florentine when I attended the Fiorentina vs. Tottenham soccer match. It was a great experience and I actually felt like I was part of Florence and the community. The best instructor at FUA was Fabbrizio Polloni. He taught me so much about the sport of soccer that I knew nothing about. He shared many stories that he has heard and has witnessed, and he has given me a newfound love for the sport. My favorite Italian phrase is “molto bene!

Max Slepian Major: Business Undeclared Home University: Binghamton University My greatest discovery was the ease of the city. I come from New York City, a very busy and active place, where it is looked down upon to take your time anywhere. Florence has made me appreciate slowing everything down and just enjoying where I am. I became a Florentine when I stopped rushing at meals. In the United States, I eat very fast and it is all about finishing the meal and not enjoying th e company you are with. The first time I went out for a meal and spent 2 hours on my main course is when I became a Florentine. My favorite Italian word is “bellissimo” - no one says “very beautiful” as much as Italians do.
Naomi Root Major: Communication Home University: University at Buffalo My greatest discovery in Florence was finding my way back home at the end of the day. I never thought I would learn my way around Florence and I am proud to say that I have. The best class at FUA was Mediterranean Cooking, specifically a lesson about Orecchiette pasta. The chef spoke to us about freedom, relationships and more. The absolute best class was that day. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: Piazza Michelangelo, find the best panini, get a heart shaped pizza from Gusta Pizza
Nicole Mastrocinque Major: Political Science and Economics Home University: Stony Brook University I became a Florentine when I went to the Florentina vs. Tottleham game in my purple Florentina shirt and chanted with other Florentines. We were cheering and chanting for our team together as a community. My favorite class instructor at FUA is Fiona Gillespie. I had her for my Sustainable Tourism class and she vastly expanded my knowledge on tourism in Italy. I was able to use what we learned in class and relate it back to Florence and other places I traveled to. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: climbing the Duomo; seeing Michelangelo’s tomb, Giallo’s tomb, and Dante’s tomb; Basilica di San Miniato Monte, Santa Maria Novella Church, and Michaelangelo’s David
Neil Hall Major: Computer Information Systems Home University: Stony Brook University The best class at FUA was Italian with Dario D’Ambrosio. He was hilarious and made a 9:00 AM class enjoyable. I learned so much from him and he took us on journeys to speak to local people which helped us get to know the culture. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: feed the birds, go to a soccer game, go inside the Duomo, do community service in the neighborhood, cook traditional Florentine meals, and eat at Ganzo, the FUA creative culinary lab My favorite Italian word is “ganzo”.

Normaliza Paucar Major: Sociology Home University: Purchase College Deciding to study abroad and being far away from home was a huge step for me. I’m the type of person who likes to play it safe in my little bubble. I commute back at my home university so I guess you can say haven’t had that ‘college experience.’ I’m learning that sometimes you need to do things on your own. You got to learn how to be confident and know what your capable of and be your own motivation. To be out there and not not be afraid because fear holds you back from you experiencing something to the fullest. I became a Florentine when I started interact to more with the community and started learning the actual history about Florence in class. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: I work at an Italian deli as a part time job and I was able to taste the food and cheeses here and compare them to back home, are not the same (must be something in the Italian air).
Noah King Major: Accounting Home University: University at Buffalo I found my greatest discovery in Florence to be when I was climbing to the top of the Duomo. In a way it symbolized this entire journey abroad. There was a lot of anxiousness and stress climbing up this incredibly cramped, and claustrophobic little staircase for 30 minutes, such was the case in prepara tion for Florence. But once I arrived at the top (Florence), the overwhelming joy and beauty made it all worth it. I became a Florentine when I was able to get a very successful haircut at a barbershop where all of the barbers and customers spoke nothing but Italian. I’m a bit of a neat-freak when it comes to my hair so being able to communicate and enjoy the experience of portraying the right haircut using no language was memorable. My favorite Italian phrase is “ciao amico!” Every time I visit my favorite shops around my apartment I say this to the workers. It is now our routine greeting and always comes with a big smile!
Rachel Squier Major: Business Administration Home University: University at Albany I felt like a Florentine most when I would sit and have a cappuccino and a croissant. Italians are known for taking their time when eating, so I try to do the same. I enjoyed trying out new cafes in Florence and always tried to find ones that a lot of locals go to. I feel like a real Italian when I’m leisurely sitting in a café sipping on a warm cappuccino. My favorite class at FUA was Exploration of Wine Culture in Italy taught by Christina Kambanella. Not only was this class so much fun, but also really interesting. We learned about the history of wine, how it’s produced, and the Italian regions and their wines. I also enjoyed the wine tasting at the end of class. What could be a better place to learn about wine than in Italy? Items checked off my Florence bucket list: I have been to the San Miniato al Monte church, where you get one of the best views of Florence! I’ve also tried so much Italian food, especially gelato and pizza!
Quinn Hennessy Major: Accounting Home University: Binghamton University My greatest discovery in Florence is that I will forever be a world traveler. My time here has been nothing but a positive experience that is both culturally and intellectually stimulating. I now see the benefit of traveling to different places and living as they do. There isn’t a specific moment that has defined this feeling, rather a constant state of happiness while being here. The best class at FUA is my Introduction to Italian class. It is extremely helpful to be able to learn the language of the country that I have been living in. Even if I don’t come away from this class fluent in Italian, we learn a lot about social norms and what is appropriate and inappropriate to say to people. I feel as though I can better assimilate with the culture because of this class. My favorite Italian phrase is “buona serata.”

Samantha Vallarela Major: B usiness Management Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence was the Giardino delle Rose, close to Piazza Michelangelo. The garden is about 3 miles from my apartment but I like going for morning runs there. In the morning I find that it’s not crowded and actually very peaceful, especially at the top of the garden area. While here, I’ve learned that I’m comfortable with exploring by myself. Being in Florence has taught me to be more independent as well as outgoing. I became a Florentine when I was away traveling and realized that I couldn’t wait to get home, referring to Florence. Florence is a home-base for me because it is a place I’ve come to know well. I feel comfortable walking around and finding my way without maps. I have my favorite places for a cappuccino in the morning, and I know the best panino spots for lunch. Florence is a place that I will be very sad to leave in May because it has become a part of who I am. My favorite Italian phrase is “tavola rasa” which means clean slate.
Rebecca Farrell Major: Health Science Home University: Stony Brook University I became a Florentine when I started shopping at the fresh market at Mercato Centrale instead of the supermarket Conad! I started buying fresh pasta and fruits alongside the locals, and conversed with all the Italians at their stands. I realized that this is what I should be doing all the time, in order to fully embrace the Italian lifestyle and culture. Also, the food is so much better and cheaper! Marta Russo was my favorite instructor at FUA because she was always in a good mood and kept the class interesting and fun. She seems like she truly enjoys her job and always looks so happy to see her students! My favorite Italian phrase is “La vita e’ bella.”
Sara Coan Major: International Business Management Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence so far is Piazza Santo Spirito because it’s an area that is rarely filled with tourists and whenever I go there, I am surrounded by locals. I learned that I like feeling a little out of my comfort zone because I learn more about myself and the Italian culture. I became a Florentine when I was able to help people with directions, explain and describe the history and architecture of buildings around the city, and order food without having to speak English. The best instructor I’ve had at FUA was Alessandro Giudice who was my professor for Business Strategy and International Business. He was very knowledgeable about the subjects he taught, explained concepts clearly and well, and made the class very enjoyable.
Samantha King Major: History/International Studies Home University: SUNY Cortland One thing I have learned about myself so far in while living in Florence is just how independent I am. I have noticed in the way I am comfortable being around and interacting with people from all walks of life. Living on the other side of the Arno, I get to cross the bridges every day and the view never gets old. Crossing them has shaped my experience through just allowing me to take a moment to take in the experience. The best class/instructor at FUA was a hard choice to make. All of the professors I had at FUA were amazing. They are all so informed and great at teaching, but they also immersed us in Italian culture (telling us where to go, what to see, etc.). Without professor Martino Traxler telling me where to get my coffee, or Doctor Karen Giacobassi teaching us Italian body language, I would not have been able to fit in so well here.

Spencer Gordon Major: Accounting Home University: Binghamton University So far, Massimo Coppetti and his Food and Wine Pairing class have been excellent. He is an extremely informative, and PASSIONATE professor. He really cares about the subject and wants to have an effect on all of the students in the class. He even gave me recommendations for great restaurants for my trip to Venice. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: Fiorentina Soccer Game, climb to the top of the Duomo, a bar (café) owner knows my name My favorite Italian phrase is “Alè Viola!” in support of the Fiorentina soccer team.
Shaye Alviene Major: Visual Arts Home University: SUNY New Paltz My greatest discovery in Florence was when I first successfully found my way around town with no help. I felt a new sense of accomplishment of being able to navigate a foreign city by myself. I felt at home in Florence when my friends and I discovered a soccer field in one of the nearby parks. We wanted to play but there were already people playing, so we asked if we could join in. We played the sport that is so popular here with locals and got to know them while doing so. I felt as if I was a part of Florence and that this was my home as well as theirs. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: play soccer with locals, eat great food and taste great wine, see beautiful views of the city, make friends with locals, and learn some of the language
Taylor Mormile Major: Marketing Home University: SUNY New Paltz The best class and instructor at FUA was Beginner Intensive Italian with Dario D’Ambrosia. Items checked off my Florence bucket list: watch the sunset, walk over Ponte Vecchio, eat over 10 different flavours of Gelato, go to a wine tasting
Taylor Christopher Major: Business Management, Specialization in Finance, Minor in Accounting Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest discovery in Florence was catching the sunset over the city. A friend and I took a hike one day with our favorite-cheeses and a Panini. Turns out we left at the perfect time! We got to watch the gorgeous sunset and enjoy our meal. I love walking around the city everyday to my destinations and finding new surprises. I really enjoyed my Marketing Professor Paolo Fiorini. He uses real life examples, which helped to understand the concepts in a clearer depth. He asks the class questions to keep us listening and involved. He is also approachable and easy to reach when needed. My number one Italian phrase is “senza glutine”, because it leads to a delicious gluten free meal I can eat!

Timothy Rowland Jr. Major: Multidisciplinary Home University: Stony Brook University I became a Florentine when my adopted Italian family through FUA’s Italian Family Club embraced me as one of their own. They taught me lessons of the Italian culture, and showed me the ways of an Italian family. They even taught me some cooking to bring home to my immediate family. The best instructor at FUA was my piano instructor, Carlotta Forasassi. Piano was very frustrating for me especially being an absolute beginner with no music experience. I could not read music, and struggled terribly with understanding the length of each note. I get easily frustrated but she calmed me down and allowed me to believe in myself, and as a resault I improved my skills tremendously.
Theodora Petre Major: Psychology Home University: Stony Brook University My greatest experience in Florence was climbing up to the top of the main cathedral, otherwise known as the Duomo. The best class and instructor I had at FUA was Cultural Perspectives with Marta Russo. She made the class fun and interesting while teaching us a lot about Italian culture and language. Her in class activities and presentations helped us to venture out in Florence and communicate with local Italians. My favorite Italian phrase is “ciao bella!”
Zoe Katz Major: History Home University: SUNY Binghamton I live on Via Maggio, which is across the Arno river, and each day on my walk to class, I am grateful that I have the ability to explore Florence from different routes and perspectives. The Ponte alle Grazie is a spot that has meaning for me because it’s the place where I can stop and see the beauty of the city. I feel apart of the local community when I go to the same coffee shop on my corner every morning and they greet me with a “Buongiorno. They always remember my order which makes me feel at home. The best instructor at FUA is Martina Ghiandelli because she knows how to make her students interested while having fun. Her class, Go Green and Learn Italian, was crucial in my struggle with the language barrier in Italy. She taught us how to say specific fruit, vegetable, and basic phrases in Italian. She also made her class entertaining through trips to the market or natural gardens.
