F o rewo rd This semester’s project goal is to encourage students to reflect on their personal growth and learning path during their study abroad experience at FUA. I have no doubt that you will have gained a deeper appreciation of your talents, your passions, and – why not – even your fears, as I am equally sure that you have relished the thrill that comes from overcoming a challenge all on your own, or gaining new friends in the process. It is my sincerest hope that you have enjoyed the unique pleasure of sharing a life-changing experience with another person, and that you are emotionally richer because of it. Each of you has expressed something about their experience in Florence in their reflections, and although everyone has had their own personal passage through Florence, I hope you will all continue to seek a life of inspiration, pursuit, and fulfilment. I would like to thank all of the students from the Stony Brook program, in particular Student Representative Christina Bogdani, for their contribution to this project, and for all that their experience has brought to FUA. Although the Spring 2019 session has come to a close, you are all forever part of the FUA community, and I hope that your path through life brings you back to us one day. Spring 2019 Florence, Italy
Oluwaseyi Dorcas Afolayan Major: Anthropology and Global Studies Home University: SUNY Oswego My point of reference in Florence is … My point of reference so far would have to be the Duomo. Whenever I feel lost, I just know to look up and I can see it almost anywhere in the city. It is the magnet of my internal compass and it’s a beautiful sight to see. Simply knowing that one of the most beautiful places in the world is a comfortable place for me, is surreal.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I began to learn my way around the city so that now I feel completely safe. Also, volunteering at the St. James Episcopal Church has just been a great experience that made me feel right at home.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) I truly enjoy all of my professors because they all have taught me so much but I guess my favorite would have to be Eduardo Sanin. He is my international human rights professor and while the class is a lot of work, and a bit exhausting topic wise, I love what we learn and his teaching style.
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: To step out my comfort zone and I believe I did that by volunteering and going to events with my friends.
Katherine Behlok Major: English and Communications Home University: University at Albany My point of reference in Florence is … My point of reference in Florence is the Ponte Vecchio. When I first arrived in Florence and didn’t know the city, I knew that as long as I could get to the Ponte Vecchio I could figure out how to get home. Walking over the bridge every day is one of the things that I will miss the most after going back to the U.S.
I became a Florentine when... I really started to feel at home in Florence once I started to get to know the city. I know where to get good coffee and gelato, how to use public transportation, and how to get from point A to B without a map. Learning how to navigate life in the city is one of the biggest parts of feeling like a Florentine.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class at FUA was the intensive Italian course. I love that I am able to use the Italian that I learned throughout the semester in my everyday life. It also made living in Florence easier because I can understand more of the things that are happening around me.

Christina Bogdani Major: Psychology/ Pre-medicine Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is … Arcetri. The first time I arrived to the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory my breath was taken away both by the uphill walk and the phenomenal view. At the top, I was able to see the beautiful inner city of Florence to the left and the rolling Tuscan hills to the right. I made that a part of my running route. The gorgeous view made the difficult run worthwhile. The top became my favorite place to go.
I became a Florentine when... I felt I was a Florentine when I was able to navigate through the city with no GPS. I was able to go to all my favorite places. I could go to the supermarket and know exactly what brands to get and where they were found. When I spent the weekend with an Italian family that barely spoke English, and I could understand some things that they would say.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) My favorite class was Philosophy and Science in Early Modern Italy with Martina Ghiandelli. She is a great professor that always captures my attention. There is not a moment where her class isn’t interesting. She takes us on walks around the city and teaches us things that open one’s eyes to many different aspects of the world. She forces you to think in ways you haven’t before.
Christopher Bunce Major: Business Management Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference throughout my time in Florence has been Via Venezia 2B since the moment I arrived. If any other particular spot has meaning to me it is Tavernetta del Battistero. All my roommates and I ate there the first day and have been regulars ever since. They treat us like real friends there and even give us free food or drinks at the end of every meal now.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine the very moment our plane touched down. Since the first time I set foot in Florence the experience has been nothing but amazing. No particular moment or place stands out to me because I have done nothing but make friends and memories since the very second I got here.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class/instructor at FUA is too early to be determined because they have all been good and were all still continuing to get to know each other. It would be disrespectful of me to single out any specific one because there is still so much time remaining and so much left to experience.

Gianna Cacamese Major: Business Management Home University: Farmingdale State My point of reference in Florence is … Piazza Santo Spirito has been one of my favorite places in Florence. Living on the Oltrarno of Florence seemed daunting at first because it’s far from the main city center, but Piazza Santo Spirito has made me feel at home. Every morning, there is a market of local vendors. Here, you can interact with the locals and truly experience the life of a Florentine. Piazza Santo Spirito has a lively nightlife and great restaurants.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I visited the flower market in Piazza della Repubblica and bought a variety of plants speaking only Italian. I do not know how to speak Italian, but I used the words and phrases I’ve learned through my experiences living in Florence to communicate with the vendors. I felt accomplished and accepted by the locals after that experience.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) My favorite class is Contemporary Italian Art with Professor Giardino Lucia. I went into that class with not a good view on contemporary art, but after several lectures with Professor Lucia I have learned to appreciate and somewhat understand the different art style. I have a new perspective of art, allowing me to be more open minded.
Madeleine Camillieri Major: occupational therapy Home University: University of Buffalo My point of reference in Florence is… A place that has specific meaning for me was the Santo Spirito church area. It was one the first things I saw here because my apartment is very close and I had to walk through it every day. My roommates and I have eaten dinner in that square many times and there are always so many people there. It also is not touristy and it was my first experience of a non-touristy part of Florence. I became a Florentine when... When I was able to order a coffee and have a conversation in only Italian. Also, when I felt I was able to blend in and not stick out like a tourist.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) My favorite class was my food anthropology class because I have never taken a class like that before and it was super interesting.

Francesca Casale Major: History Education/Sociology Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… Santa Croce. Santa Croce was the first place I stumbled across, my first day here, trying to find my way. When I saw it, it was really put into perspective that I was actually studying abroad in such a beautiful, culture-filled city filled with amazing monuments and historic places. It’s right down the block from where I lived, so I always knew if I could find Santa Croce, I could find my way home.
I became a Florentine when… I began to travel outside the city center to volunteer in the Florentine school districts. Commuting out of the city made me realize that Florence has so much more to offer than just the touristy parts. The kids that I got to teach were so interested in learning all about American culture, and as much as I taught them they taught me, about Italian language and culture.
My favorite Italian word/phrase is (and why) is… Ci vediamo. It reminds me that there’s not always a goodbye, just a see you soon.
Caitlin Clonan Major: Illustration and Film Home University: Fredonia My point of reference in Florence is… One of my favorite places in Florence is Le Cascine park. I discovered this park one early morning. I decided to go for a walk along the river, and just kept walking until I came across this park with trails going through the trees and along the river. There were a couple people running or walking their dogs, but mostly it was empty and calm, a relief from the busy center of the city.
I became a Florentine when… I feel at home in Florence any time I sit along the Arno river or in front of any of the churches with my sketch pad and pencils, drawing and feeling part of all of the culture around me. The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why)
My favorite class at FUA is street photography, because I love photographing and bringing to light the everyday happenings in Florence that not everybody notices.
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: The items checked off my Florence bucket list are seeing the sunrise at Piazzale Michelangelo and seeing the artwork I had only seen in textbooks and pictures in real life.

Emma Cusick Major: Communications Home University: SUNY Cortland My point of reference in Florence is … The Piazzale Michelangelo is definitely a special location that is special to me because it’s one of the first places I’ve visited since I’ve been here. Also, it’s a beautiful view of the whole city and it helped me figure out where I am in relation to other things.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I started taking my Italian language classes because now I can speak a bit of Italian to store owners and the locals.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) Francesca who teaches the first portion of the Italian 6 credit class and Tommaso who continues the second half of Italian. They’re the best instructors I’ve had because they make me feel comfortable and at home.

My favorite Italian word/phrase (and why) is... “Allora”, because all my teachers say it all the time.
Bailey Davis Major: Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing and Finance Home University: University at Buffalo My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Ponte Vecchio. Living in the Oltrarno, I am lucky enough to be able to cross over a bridge that has so much history every single day. Even though most of the time it is filled with people, when you cross it early in the morning or later at night, you are able to take in the beauty that it holds.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I started taking the bus to and from my internship because it is outside the city center. There was one time where I got up out of my seat for an older woman. Even though I don’t speak much Italian, I could tell when she was thanking me and saying how appreciative she was.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) My favorite class and instructor at FUA was my Italian class with Francesca. She always has a smile on her face and is passionate about teaching. She also likes to fill us in on smaller sights to see in Florence, and what is happening in the local news. You can tell that she cares about the experiences we have while in Florence.
Liam Dole Major: Communication Home University: SUNY Geneseo My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference is at Piazzale Michelangelo. Not only does it offer an unforgettable view of the city, this is a common place that myself, and a few friends that I have made here in Florence, hike up to weekly to take in the view. We look forward to going up there every week simply to relax and forget about any worries we have.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I decided to volunteer my time at St. James Episcopal Church. Putting myself out there and working at a food bank was an eye-opening experience for obvious reasons, and I truly felt welcomed by the church staff. Getting the opportunity to give back to the Florentine community was something that I did not imagine myself doing while abroad.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class and instructor at FUA is Cultural Perspectives with Dario. In this class, I learn all about Italian culture from an upbeat, kind, and funny professor who is clearly passionate about Italian culture. I look forward to attending this class every week because Dario cares so much about his students integrating themselves into the way of life of Italians.
Nicolle Feldman Major: Psychology Pre-Law Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Basilica di Santa Croce. We live in the St. Croce neighborhood, so on the very first day of exploring our new city this was the first landmark we encountered. Looking up at something so historic, beautiful, and grand really made us appreciate our new home.
I became a Florentine when … I became a Florentine when I referred to Florence as “home” when I was traveling to other cities. The familiarity and love I developed for the city definitely made me feel like a true Florentine. I ended up comparing all of the cities I travelled to, to Florence and this made me realize how accustomed I became to my Firenze.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class I took at FUA was one that combined my interest in reading and my field of study, psychology. The course is Bibliotherapy and taught by Melissa Rossi. It discussed how certain books and reading in general provides healing benefits and can be used in clinical and nonclinical settings. I enjoyed being able to take what would’ve been an upper division psychology class back home, abroad.

Michael Finkelstein Major: History Ed. Home University: SUNY Cortland My point of reference in Florence is… The Duomo has a special meaning in my experience so far. When I first arrived here it was one of the first buildings I saw when I accidentally bumped into it walking late at night. I still can’t believe every time I walk past it on my way to class that a building of this size and detail exists. It makes me think, “Wow I am really experiencing living in Florence right now, it’s incredible.”
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I traveled and for the first time after the trip was over I thought, “I can’t wait to go home”. When I thought of home I didn’t think of the U.S. I thought of being back in Florence, back at my apartment, back to what was familiar and comfortable to me. I think when you start thinking of a place as your home that is when you have adjusted.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class/instructor at FUA has to be my Cultural Introduction to Italy class taught by Dario. I think this class is great because we get to learn so many different things about the Italian culture. Also, Dario is a really funny professor and he is able to make the class exciting and fun.
Samantha Gallasch Major: English Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My professors took our class to Il Giardino dell’Orticoltura which has since become one of my favorite places. I have always been surrounded by greenery and that access to nature is something that I crave. Being in such an urban environment is amazing in its own ways, but finding a green space has made Florence feel like home.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I discovered places around Florence that I can bring my friends to. Being able to find bars, restaurants, and beautiful locations that I want to share with other people has made me feel like I have some small bit of stake in the city.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) I have greatly enjoyed all my instructors here at FUA. They have a deep love for teaching and respect for the students and I have loved speaking to and getting to know all of my professors.
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: I have seen the David and a few of the beautiful vistas and I’ve also found a lot of great little shops and cafes.
Nicole Gatto Major: Theatre Studies and minor in music Home University: SUNY New Paltz My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is Piazza Santa Trinita. This is the Piazza that I hang out in and pass by every day when I walk to my Theatre Internship at St. Mark’s Church. There, I have the opportunity to dress up and go onstage as an extra in the opera “La Traviata”.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I ordered just “caffè” at a bar fully in Italian.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best instructor at FUA was Dario because his classes are fun and informative at the same time. He also is an amazing dancer!
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: Piazzale Michelangelo, Duomo, David, sandwich at All’Antico Vinaio, gelato at Gelateria dei Neri, seen Italian opera, ordered a cappuccino and cornetto, and visit Tuscan countryside on a wine tour.
Erin Hannan Major: Digital Media Management and Journalism Home University: SUNY New Paltz My point of reference in Florence is… The Piazzale Michelangelo best reflects my life so far in Florence. It is easy to isolate yourself into the one neighborhood you live in, or stay on the same side of the Arno. The first time I decided to venture up the countless stairs to the Piazzale Michelangelo I finally felt at home in Florence. Seeing the entire city from a unique and beautiful perspective allowed me to fully appreciate my life here.
I became a Florentine when… While I don’t believe I have yet become a Florentine, the first time I started to feel a part of this community is when I went to the local Oblate Library. I decided to leave the comfort of the FUA facilities, and I found myself surrounded by Florentine’s all of ages. As intimidating as it was to feel like the only foreigner, I began to appreciate my time there amongst the locals.
My favorite Italian word/phrase (and why) is... My favorite word is andiamo. I hear it all the time and view it as encouragement to seize the day.

Jan Marren Ignacio Major: Business Management Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Arno River. I find the Arno to be an iconic and essential part of Florence. Although the city center seems to revolve around the Duomo and its grandeur, the Arno is a timeless element of the region. The colorful buildings surrounding the Arno just compliments its beauty and, to me, represents the charm of Florence.
I became a Florentine when... I didn’t have a sudden epiphany of becoming a true Florentine, however I did gradually adapt to the ways of locals. I started dressing more in layers and even in warmer weather, would keep my coat. I adapted to the Italian diet, often having pastry and cappuccino in the morning and eating dinner at a later time. I now even find myself always ordering pasta with dinner and can’t do without it.

Kristen Inkpen Major: Horticulture Home University: Farmingdale State College My point of reference in Florence is … I like Santa Croce because it’s relaxing to hang out there and eat and talk to your friends.
I became a Florentine when... I was able to start speaking basic phrases and sentences to other Italians. It also became easier to go grocery shopping.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) Grow Green and Learn Italian is the best class because we get to walk around the city and learn new things and new places to go. We also learn basic Italian words and phrases which is helpful.

Lindsay Kasprzyk Major: Public Relations Home University: SUNY Fredonia My point of reference in Florence is: The Ponte Vecchio because I walk past it every day to get to the other side of the river and the view still amazes me after living here for more than a month. Every time I walk past it, it makes me realize how lucky I am to be able to have this opportunity to study abroad in this beautiful city.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I was at a restaurant and a woman asked me for some good recommendations for bars and places to go to eat.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class/instructor at FUA was Sandra Nannini because she has so much experience from owning her own fashion company ‘Nannini’ and is able to share her knowledge in the two of the classes that I take with her.

Dean Kousmanidis Major: Business Administration Home University: SUNY Geneseo My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference so far has to be the Piazzale Michelangelo. My buddies and I have made it a Tuesday tradition to get a sandwich from All’Antico Vinaio, and have a few drinks at the Michelangelo. The view is incredible and there is a good slice of Italian culture always waiting for us up there.
I became a Florentine when... I am my most Florentine when I am in my gym. My gym is literally all locals other than myself, so communicating with them every day makes me feel the most assimilated to the Florentine culture.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best instructor at FUA for me is definitely Dario. He is very funny, and easy going. His classes are very laid back, and I learn a lot in this kind of environment.

Marco LaRocca Major: Communications Home University: SUNY Geneseo My point of reference in Florence is… The Medici Chapel. Many people notice the famous Duomo of Florence, but about a quarter of a mile north there stands a second dome, the Medici Chapel. Waking up every morning to a breathtaking view of this monument amazes me. I know that wherever I am in Florence, all I need to do is look up and find the towering Medici Chapel to make me feel at home.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I began playing soccer every week. Playing soccer my whole life, I have always imagined what it was like to play in a different setting and culture/ To finally be able to do that in one of the most influential cities in the world really made me feel like I was one of them.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class at FUA is the intensive Italian language course. I feel that the instructors of this course are extremely helpful and teach American students the most useful things to get around. What has allowed me to flourish in this Italian culture is directly influenced by my professors Francesca and Tomaso.
Heath Larssan Major: Business Administration & Information Systems Home University: Binghamton University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Duomo! The Duomo has become a landmark in my personal map of Florence and a point of reference practically. It’s enormous dome and captivating façade and detailing captures my attention even though I walk by it almost every single day. Additionally, it’s in the center of all the places I often go to in Florence, making it a practical asset and point of reference in the city.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I studied in a café for the first time. To simply do work with a cappuccino by your side and amazing atmosphere, was when I first felt like I was partaking in Florentine culture. It is a very casual thing to just stroll into a café and sit down for work or for a chat, so I finally felt like a Florentine the first time I did this.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class/instructor at FUA was Catia Ballerini, my Elementary Italian Professor. Catia is the most understanding and helpful professor I have had here at FUA. Catia is really sweet, and eager to help you with any questions you may have, which is really important when studying a new language for the first time.
Qin Quan Lin Major: Information Systems Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Italian family’s place where I stayed in my first week. Going to America, staying with different relatives, coming abroad. I don’t get homesick. But I felt it when I left the family and moved into my apartment. It was the most serious homesickness, and it hit me like Vitas’ 7th element. Quinn, you will see them again. You live 20 minutes away. Walk.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine the first morning here. For many people, coming here meant being away from family. I started a new one. Every morning the father would come into my room, saying “Buongiorno” and opening the window. Waking at 8 became easy, knowing it was another day of class, grocery shopping with my Italian father, lunch with him and my Italian brother, dinner with everyone. I felt like I was born again in Italy.
Jenna Lyle M y point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the church in Santa Croce square. To get to class I have to pass this church and I often find myself compelled to sit on the steps of the church and listen to the violinist in the square. I find this is the place where I can sit and reflect upon my time in Florence and appreciate my life here, and the beauty of the city.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I stopped moving out of the way when bikers pass me on the street. I think that not stopping and allowing them to maneuver around me is a sign that I am becoming more comfortable in this city and understanding how to navigate my way around like the rest of the locals.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class at FUA is my culture class, because I enjoy the city walks after class and my professor Dario is extremely funny. Even though the class is long, I never feel bored or like it takes too long because Dario keeps the class interesting and entertaining.

Jessica Macci Major: Business Administration and Management Home University: SUNY Plattsburgh My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is Piazzale Michelangelo. Every time I go up there I am always reminded how lucky I am to be able to study in such a beautiful city for a semester. The view at the top of Piazzale Michelangelo has taught me to appreciate the whole city and enjoy every second of it while I can.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I started shopping at local markets because all of the locals do that. The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best instructor at FUA is Marco DiManno. He is my professor for my Food, Culture and Society class. He gets so excited when he is teaching about the different kinds of Italian food, especially during the cooking labs!

A few items that I am able to check off my Florence bucket list are: climb the Duomo; shop at a local food markets; and try aperitivo.
Samantha Madden Major: Math Major/Women & Gender Studies Minor Home University: SUNY Geneseo My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Santa Croce Basilica. I visited Florence during my senior year of high school and the beauty of this piazza is what helped me decide to study here. The constant livelihood of the square combined with the quaintness of the surrounding restaurants really conveys the environment of Florence as a whole.
I became a Florentine when... The first time I felt like a Florentine was when I was aimlessly wandering the streets of Florence after class and managed to find my way home without directions for the first time. The streets started to finally feel familiar and I had a sense of belonging, as I was no longer the tourist with her eyes glued to her phone trying to find where she needed to go.
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: So far, I’ve crossed watching the sunset from the San Michelangelo Piazzale, climbing the Duomo, and visiting the Boboli gardens off my Florence bucket list.
Emily McGuire Major: Communication Home University: SUNY Fredonia My point of reference in Florence is… Florence has been a great experience for me so far, it feels like a home to me. The place that has a specific meaning to me is the Pitti Palace right across the street from my apartment. It’s such an amazing thing to see, just like this entire experience studying abroad.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I learned how to order most of my food in Italian and was able to understand the locals when they would talk to me.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class/instructor at FUA was Dario who instructs my cultural perspectives class because the class is fun yet we are still learning so much each week. We learn more of the language, more about the history in the city and the culture of the Italians.

Sarah McNulty Major: Studio Art Home University: SUNY Cortland My point of reference in Florence is… Piazza della Signoria because one day I had to go out and draw for class; I went there and drew for hours and it was very calming.
I became a Florentine when... I guess I feel like I became part of the local community when I stopped being nervous to go to the grocery store.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) I have 2 favorite professors/ instructors. Andi Nufer is my drawing professor and I have learned so much from her. Not only how to draw, but also how to think about life and how to appreciate it. Gaia Poli is my instructor for my experiential learning, and she is amazing! I call her my go-to Italian. She’s always there to listen and help!

Gianna Meola Major: International Studies Home University: SUNY Oneonta My point of reference in Florence is… The Duomo is my reference that will forever leave an imprint on my heart. I have never experienced a building give me an empowering feeling. “I’m actually here,” I thought to myself. Since our arrival I have been using the Duomo as my main reference, admiring it more and more every time I pass by. If I could find the Duomo, I could find my way home.
I became a Florentine when... I become a Florentine when I went to Piazzale Michelangelo to write in my journal. I was looking down on the city I would call home for the next three months. Underneath the David on the circle of steps I began writing in my journal. Looking around at people, admiring children playing tag, watching people ride bikes, it was the first time it felt like home.
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: Going to an aperitivo, climbing the Duomo, visiting Piazzale Michelangelo (as well as watching the sunset), taking in the view at the Ponte Vecchio.
Jacquelyn Minassian Major: Political Science Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Duomo. I walk past this building every single day on my way to class and seeing it has become a regular part of my day.
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I could speak to locals in Italian. After a month of living here I finally became comfortable asking and ordering in Italian.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class at FUA I am taking is my Italian language class. It has been a tremendous help in my transition to the Italian culture.

My point of reference in Florence is … Piazzale Michelangelo. I like to climb these stairs and look at the view any chance I get. I like to go alone and with friends. I like to look around, admire the city and look at everyone’s interactions with one another. I love going when the sun is setting.
I became a Florentine when... When I was able to go into the grocery store and not get a bit of anxiety. When I was finally able to get to most destinations without my phone and the GPS. When I was able to help an elderly couple get to Santa Croce with directions.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) Bibliotherapy because it is so interesting to me and pertains to my major at home. I feel useful in class and knowing that I can take this information and put it towards my future studies as becoming an educator helps me enjoy the class thoroughly.
Caleb Murthy Major: Economics Home University: SUNY Geneseo My point of reference in Florence is… My favorite reference point in Florence is the Medici Chapel. This is because it’s next to my house and I pass it every day on my way to class. It symbolizes being home for me and it helped me know where I was when I first came here
I became a Florentine when… I became a Florentine when I was able to communicate with Cafe owners who didn’t speak English. Also, when I began to be able to find my way around without directions.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) My favorite class and instructor was Italian with Tommaso. This class was very fun and Tommaso helped us really understand the Italian language.

Zoe Palminteri Major: Sociology and Education Home University: Hunter College My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the magnificent Duomo; I still stop to admire it each time I pass by it even after a month here. A place that has special meaning to me (and probably many other people) is Gelateria De Neri because my friends and I go there way too many times per week. My friends and I love to wander around the city and eat gelato.
I became a Florentine when... I think that I became a Florentine when I started to regularly speak Italian when out in stores, ordering food and in other situations. When I first got here, I knew some Italian, but was self-conscious about speaking it; but since I’ve been here and have been working hard in my Italian classes, I am much more comfortable and challenge myself to always speak Italian when with locals.

Sophia Peluso Major: Psychology- Child Development and Italian Language Minor Home University: SUNY Purchase College My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Terzo Giardino park. I love being able to walk here and sit on the Arno. I live by a river at home so I feel at home being near the Arno. It’s quiet and never has tourists, usually people walking their dogs or painting. I feel like it’s my secret spot.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I started going to the same bar every morning and now they know my name and order.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best instructor I’ve had is my Italian professor, Francesca. She’s so sweet and funny, she makes it worth getting up for an 8am class.

My favorite Italian word/phrase (and why) is... I don’t have one, I enjoy just being able to talk in Italian.
Luca Ricciardi Major: Marketing Home University: University at Albany My point of reference in Florence is… My experiences in Florence has been shaped by several places, people, and events. I think seeing the Duomo for the first time is what really blew me away, as the structure is so large and detailed. It made me feel like I was in a whole new world, and although seeing it every day doesn’t have the same effect anymore, it still reminds me of where I am and why I am here.
I became a Florentine when... One experience in particular that made me feel like a Florentine was shopping at a small and petite grocery store right by my apartment. There were fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as a counter that was full of cheeses and olives. The store wasn’t fancy, and didn’t have everything you could need, but it felt authentic and made it feel like home which I appreciated.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) My favorite instructor is my art therapy teacher. The class overall has been an eye-opening experience as I have learned how to understand self-awareness through art in a nonjudgmental atmosphere. The instructor promotes discussion and self-awareness, while also teaching us the importance and usefulness of art therapy. Her non-judgmental and accepting attitude makes everyone feel safe to express themselves.
Melina Roussos Major: Early Childhood Education Home University: SUNY Cortland My point of reference in Florence is … My point of reference in Florence is the Ponte Vecchio. I walk through the Ponte Vecchio every single day. It is so beautiful, and each and every day I take it all in, always in awe that this is my home for these next few months. Whenever I’m walking back to my apartment, whether it is from class, traveling, or a night out, whenever I reach the Ponte Vecchio, I feel safe and at home.
I became a Florentine when... When somebody came up to me and asked me for directions. I’m usually the worst at directions, especially with unfamiliar places, so when I was able to help other people navigate themselves around Florence, I realized Florence is truly my home away from home.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class and instructor at FUA is by far the cultural perspectives class with Professor Dario. Not only is it so fascinating to learn all about the language and culture from a country we are currently living in, but Dario always makes sure to keep us interested and even constantly laughing.

Jared Solero Major: Secondary Education (History) Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the restaurant Beer House Club. Whether it was to grab food before or after class, hangout with friends, or watch the soccer games, the guys at Beer House always made it feel like a home away from home. I will definitely miss the delicious food and great hospitality but I am glad I got to spend a lot of quality time with such genuine people.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I started volunteering at Pirandello Middle School. In order to get there, I had to take public transportation outside of the city center where there are virtually no tourists. The interactions I had with locals as well as the students who were true Florentines were some of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced. Although I have trouble speaking Italian, they were patient with me and never made me feel overwhelmed.

Juliet Sullivan Major: Biology Home University: Stony Brook My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is Santa Croce because it is on our street and was the first big site we saw upon arrival. Whenever trying to find my way home from anywhere in Florence, if I come to Santa Croce, I know I am only a stone’s throw away from my apartment, so it has become very familiar. It’s also where I attend mass.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I had to go grocery shopping. At the grocery store is where I think I find the most locals. Additionally, going grocery shopping isn’t something you would typically do while on vacation, but rather at home to fulfill your everyday needs that aren’t served to you.
Items checked off my Florence bucket list: Climb to the top of the Duomo. After learning all about its construction in my architecture class, I was so intrigued to actually go inside to see it in person.
Kaitlin Sullivan Major: Health and Human Services (Early Childhood Concentration) Home University: University at Buffalo My point of reference in Florence is… Santa Croce. This has easily become my favorite spot in Florence to spend time. It was at Santa Croce that my friends and I had first brought lunch to and sat on the benches and took in the busyness of the city in the afternoon. I always feel that there is so much to see in this little spot, and I love walking here after class with some of my friends.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I was finally able to walk to my classes and the grocery store without using my phone for directions. My first few weeks in Florence felt very hectic as I tried to find my way around the busy city, but it began to feel much more like home when I was able to find my own way around.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class at FUA was my Cultural Perspectives class. Dario teaches us so much about Italy during this class period, from the history of Italy, to basic communication skills, to current events, I always enjoy going to this class and I feel that I truly get a lot out of it.
Stella Thomas Major: English Home University: University at Albany My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference so far in Florence is Santo Spirito. I love the energy of both the square and the church, and the various restaurants/café’s surrounding it. It feels very removed from the more touristy points of Florence, and allows me to get away from the crowds that I usually encounter. Also, living on the Oltrarno side of the river, it allows me to take advantage of my neighborhood being less common.
I became a Florentine when... I felt most like a Florentine when my friends and I visited a Jazz Club. We got to listen to authentic jazz music from very talented locals. We were by far the youngest people there, but we didn’t feel out of place. Everyone was there for the same reasons, and I felt very integrated into the interests of the Florentine community.

Devin Timpone Major: Graphic Design major Home University: SUNY New Paltz My point of reference in Florence is… My point of reference in Florence is the Ponte Vecchio, which I cross everyday to go to class or come back to my apartment. I’m still blown away by the view of the Arno even though I’ve seen it a thousand times. It reminds me how lucky I am to be somewhere so beautiful and somewhere with so much history.
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when I traveled to other parts of Italy for the weekend and found myself missing Florence. That’s when I knew Florence had become a second home for me.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) The best class at FUA has been my words, painting and emotion class. It’s really opened my eyes to the psychology of art and how being creative can be a spiritual experience that both motivates and challenges artists around the world.
My favorite Italian word/phrase (and why) is... My favorite Italian word is Allora because of how often it’s used.
James Toomey Major: Political Science Home University: Stony Brook University My point of reference in Florence is… About halfway between my apartment and the Duomo is Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. This is the reference point I used to help me find my way back to the apartment for the first couple weeks of the trip. It also serves as a meeting point for our roommates and a nice spot at to meet locals and listen to street music on Friday and Saturday nights
I became a Florentine when... I became a Florentine when all of our roommates became friends with the staff at Tavernetta Del Battistero. After going there several times, we became very good friends with the waitstaff, owner and chef. Whenever I pass the restaurant they always say hello and we talk, it makes me feel part of the community.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) Martina Ghiandelli is my favorite professor because along with her class being very informative, she sends us emails about free things to do if staying in Florence over the weekend. Also she is a local and has given me recommendations on restaurants and where to shop.
Gabrielle Westfield Major: Sociology Home University: Stony Brook My point of reference in Florence is… Every day I pass by San Lorenzo. Same can be said about the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio. I’ve learned a lot about the architecture in Italy. Now I also use these beautiful landmarks to make sure I’m walking in the right direction.
I became a Florentine when… Honestly, I don’t think I have. I’ve stopped trying to dress like a Florentine since the weather got warmer. It’s hard to think of being part of the community when I don’t act like the Florentines I pass on the streets.
The best class/instructor at FUA was (and why) I have to be a little biased here since 2 of my 4 teachers are Dario. He’s a fun guy and makes both of my classes with him fun (History of the Italian Renaissance and Cultural Perspectives). He doesn’t just lecture at us, he shows us videos and makes us do presentations. For classes though, I love my Survey of Italian Art class. It’s allowed me to see places I probably wouldn’t have alone.
