A Message From the Board of Trustees Chair and the Head of Schools Dear Gulliver Community, The theme for the 2015-2016 school year was “connect” and it was exhilarating to see all the ways our entire community took on the challenge! We saw major enhancements in our collective support of Gulliver’s mission to create an academic community devoted to educational excellence with a personal touch that fulfills each student’s potential. Our incredible families, alumni, Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, and friends in the community helped us to achieve significant progress towards this goal, all of which enhances the experience of all of our students. In this spirit, the 2015-2016 Annual Report of Giving celebrates our collective accomplishments while recognizing the Gulliver community for their ongoing commitment and generosity. We are pleased to report during 2015-2016, we raised approximately $1.1 million to advance the mission of our dynamic school, with Annual Fund contributions growing 10 percent over the previous year. We sincerely appreciate the generosity of our 1,200-plus donors, including 430 first-time donors, for helping make these accomplishments possible. We would also like to recognize and congratulate the 14 Gulliver divisions who achieved 100 percent participation in this year’s Annual Fund efforts. Our faculty and staff are one of our greatest resources, and their widespread support shows confidence in Gulliver’s mission. We also owe a great debt of gratitude to our Annual Fund volunteer chairs for their leadership and commitment to our goal.

Our goal is a 21st century curriculum, campus and leadership structure, one that ensures that Gulliver students will continue to be “future ready,” and we are already planning major projects in support of this for the coming year. We are celebrating the completion of the renovated North Playground, the renovation of classrooms on all campuses, including new furniture, the implementation of curriculum mapping, and the launch of a new Signature Program in Marine Science field studies. These are just a few examples of the continuing spirit of innovation, which you can learn more about in this report. Our school community remains committed to building on a tradition of excellence. Our staff consistently demonstrates a commitment and dedication to the success and advancement of Gulliver’s mission. Our faculty and students continue to excel in unprecedented ways, receiving national and international recognition. Our alumni are leaders in fields including business, education, medicine, art, law and more. Current Gulliver students and alumni/ae are also making a difference in the world outside of the school through significant service work addressing such areas as education, hunger, cancer research, and housing. They are improving and enhancing their communities and trying to improve the quality of life for others.

With more than 50 countries represented in our student population, the Gulliver of today is a diverse community full of positive energy, momentum, progress and pride. Over the past year, our entire school has responded with immense generosity – be it volunteering with the Parents’ Association or Alumni Association, providing classroom support, making connections with business institutions, or contributing to the Annual Fund. We have counted on you, and we are so grateful for the strong show of support our community has displayed for the work we are doing today and for the possibilities that lie ahead of us. A Message From the Board of Trustees Chair and the Head of Schools

This year, in accordance with our newly-adopted Strategic Plan, we have continued to review our academics and curriculum; to assess the ways in which we can better serve our students and their families, and the faculty and administration; to conduct a safety and soundness evaluation of our campuses; and to review how to improve the physical and technological infrastructure of our school.

Every year, the Annual Fund builds and sustains Gulliver’s one-of-a-kind educational experience, giving students the best opportunities to fulfill their incredible potential. The Annual Fund is fueled by support from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students, all of whom are passionate about our school and the immeasurable value of a Gulliver education.

Thanks to your dedication and generosity, the Annual Fund continues to exceed its goal. Over the past seven years, since its launch, donors have cumulatively given more than $4.2 million to the Annual Fund. Together, our Annual Fund gifts go to work immediately throughout all areas of the school, enhancing the Gulliver experience for our students of today and tomorrow.

Last year your Annual Fund dollars were designated and invested in the following ways: • Alumnium table benches (bases) at all campuses • Academy – Marian C. Krutulis Campus north playground • Memorial Wall at the Academy • Specialty Node Chairs furniture for select Middle School social studies and foreign language classrooms • Recording equipment for Raider Seminars • Installation of glass classroom space in the Shah Family Library Media Center at the Preparatory Campus • Equipment and supplies for new maker space at the Montgomery Drive Campus • Equipment for Athletic teams 2016-2017 Projects to be funded by current fundraising efforts: • Installation of Naturescape/sensory garden and outdoor study area at the Academy – Marian C. Financial Report Gulliver Schools is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation committed to operating a financially stable, constant and reliable organization that carefully focuses on the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission and strategic plan.

The school is committed to fiscal compliance, financial accountability and disclosures as applied to nonprofit organizations. Please refer to the charts indicating the source and application of funds. Gulliver operates from a fiscally sound economic base that minimizes debt and tuition growth. The school has implemented a system of internal controls designed to reasonably safeguard its assets and ensure the proper authorization, execution and recording of its transactions. Additionally, the school engages the services of Verdeja, De Armas & Trujillo, LLP as independent accountants to audit its financial statements and express an opinion concerning said statements. Their audits include reviews and tests of the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s internal controls to the extent they believe necessary to determine and conduct the audit procedures that support their opinion.

An endowment is a permanent fund that provides perpetual, annual support for Gulliver. Gulliver is committed to building its endowment to help develop and ensure the school’s longterm financial security. Endowment funds are important to Gulliver because they relieve the school from having to raise every single dollar needed every year, providing an income source on which the school can depend. As of June 2016, endowments totaled $9,828,773. As an endowment fund donor, you may decide to designate your gift to one of our established endowments or inquire about initiating a new one. Initiating a new endowment has a threshold amount of $250,000, which enables you to create a lasting legacy in your name or in the name of someone you wish to honor or memorialize. The initial gift will never be touched, and since it is invested, it will grow each year. Only interest income from the endowment will be used for the purpose you designate.

Leadership Society: Celebrate and Connect Gulliver began a new tradition in fall 2015, hosting a Leadership Society Reception to thank contributors who generously donated $10,000 or more for their support during the previous school year. This inaugural event, held on October 1, 2015, brought together parents, alumni and corporate donors for an intimate celebration at the home of Gulliver Head of Schools Frank Steel and his wife, Betsy. 5th Annual Donor Reception: A Celebration of Generosity

Gulliver Hosts Fifth Annual Donor Reception: “A Celebration of Generosity” On October 28, 2015, Gulliver held a special reception to thank and honor donors who contributed $2,000 or more to Gulliver during the previous school year. The celebration was a chance to recognize these donors for their support and generosity, and it brought together parents, alumni, faculty, staff, community and corporate donors for an intimate celebration at the Shah Family Library Media Center. BNY Mellon Wealth Management generously supported the evening. “It was truly BNY Mellon’s honor to once again host Gulliver’s annual Donor Reception,” says Libby Witherspoon ‘87, a current Gulliver parent who is a senior director and portfolio manager with BNY Mellon Wealth Management. “We applaud

the generosity of Gulliver’s lead donors and each donor’s support of the School and, most importantly, the students. Their commitment to Gulliver truly makes a difference in the experience of each and every student.” Witherspoon notes that Gulliver taught her the importance of giving back, and she is grateful for it. “I am lucky to work with a company where we consider philanthropy and community service to be part of our heritage and our identity, and each employee is encouraged to give back to our community through volunteer work,” she adds. “Our support of Gulliver is just one way BNY Mellon puts our commitment to the community into action. Gulliver Field Studies Program

Beyond Giving: Gulliver Field Studies Program In Gulliverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effort to offer a well-rounded, dynamic curriculum that forms a solid bridge to college, and eventually, the workplace, we proudly debuted a new Field Studies Program, Marine Science Field Studies. This two-year program is the first of its kind in the United States and allows students to combine hands-on activities and experiences with the more traditional classroom and laboratory settings of the science curriculum.

Year Two focuses on the heart of Marine Science, utilizing BioRock, a newer coral restoration technique, and collaborating with Island Dolphin Care and Gulliverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own engineering department. The culminating year applies research techniques to both marine and terrestrial environments. Additional concepts include environmental policy driven by scientific research, and restoration efforts and invasive species management.

Year One of the program has students focus on coral ecology and restoration techniques, as well as basic fish identification using the Reef.org educational program. Additional aspects of the first year of the program includes: coral anatomy and physiology, coral reef management, coral restoration programs and techniques, marine research basics, conservation training modules, and monitoring the Harbour Village Nursery using underwater cameras.

Completion of Year Two is dependent on students demonstrating knowledge and properly applying their acquired field studies techniques. They must participate in science competitions and conferences, document their research, and showcase their findings in a variety of formats.

To successfully complete the first year of the program, students must complete the PADI Coral Restoration Specialist certification course, complete and develop a community outreach program, complete a minimum of five entries to the Teens4Ocean blog, and submit a research proposal to begin Year Two studies.

Not only does our latest field studies program prepare students for future careers in Marine Science before they even set foot inside their chosen college, it lets them directly help conserve one of the global communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest assets: our natural world.

This summer, Gulliver proudly partnered with Breakthrough Miami, an award-winning, eight-year, tuition-free academic enrichment program that provides motivated middle-school students from underserved communities with the tools they need to achieve their most ambitious goals in life. Its students-teaching-students internship engages outstanding older students as teachers, mentors and role models, so that participants enter and thrive in college-prep high schools and enroll in college. More than 95 percent of participants attend public middle- and high-schools in Miami-Dade County, while participating in enrichment activities on six independent school sites, including Gulliver Prep. For eight weeks, Gulliver provided 60 students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds with classrooms and educational facilities at its preparatory campus to help them learn, grow and achieve their fullest potential while preparing to succeed in college. A typical day for the students included icebreaker activities, word-of-the-day and math-problem-of-the-day group discussions, and academic and elective courses.

Each year, many low-income students must overcome significant challenges to graduate from high school on time or pursue a college education. Breakthrough Miami, which currently serves more than 1,100 fifth through 12th-grade students from MiamiDade County, provides an academic enrichment program that uses a peer-mentoring model to ensure that these students have access to excellent educational opportunities.

During the past five years, more than 80% of Breakthrough Miami graduates have entered four-year colleges, compared with 22% of low-income students nationwide. We are especially proud to participate in a program with a direct impact on our local community, a direct reflection of Gulliverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s community values of effort, caring, problem-solving and leadership through service.

Curriculum Mapping

Beyond Giving: Curriculum Mapping This past year, Gulliver embarked on a long-term schoolwide curriculum mapping project, with the goal of defining the content, skills, assessment methods and research-based standards that all grade levels and disciplines use to ensure student learning is scaffolded from grade to grade. By determining what we want students to learn and how we expect them to be able to apply it, and linking those concepts to external standards that are widely accepted by educators, we chart a clear path for all of our students, no matter the grade level at which they enter Gulliver.

She has served as an education consultant to thousands of schools and organizations nationally and internationally on issues and practices pertaining to creating 21st century learning environments, upgrading curriculum mapping and strategic planning. She is the author of several books on curriculum design and has served as an adjunct associate professor at the Columbia University Teachers College Department of Curriculum and Teaching since 1981.

The first and most universally supported initiative in the Board of Trusteesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Strategic Vision and Plan for Gulliver Schools aims to â&#x20AC;&#x153;position Gulliver Schools on the student-centered side of the 21st century teaching and learning continuum.â&#x20AC;? It is this point that led to our declaration of what we want our school to become, and began our curriculum mapping journey.

As an independent school, we are able to select the standards that are best for our students. This freedom allows us to choose which benchmarks work best for us, as well as seek ideas and input from the Gulliver community throughout the mapping process. In addition, curriculum mapping helps to address academic gaps, assist in differentiation and investigate where the curriculum is or is not aligned to 21st century standards.

To help streamline this undertaking, Gulliver partnered with Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs, a world-renowned expert on curriculum mapping, to help collaboratively design our curriculum and determine which types of experiences will best support

Articulating and defining a curriculum takes tremendous work, but this comprehensive collaboration has the potential to unify Gulliver in ways that we have only begun to imagine.

North Playground Renovation

Beyond Giving: North Playground Renovation A major capital project commenced in the 2015 2016 school year, the long-awaited renovation of the Academy Campus North Playground. Gulliver found the perfect partner to help our students learn, grow and play in Kompan, a European company started 40 years ago by an artist who observed that children would rather play on his sculptures than look at them. Now the world’s number one playground supplier, Kompan carefully designs and develops their equipment from the perspective of the child, adhering to three core pillars: health, learning and environment. Research shows Kompan’s playgrounds provide gains in health, learning and social inclusion, with an emphasis on safe, student-centered play, specifically helping children to actively and constructively deal with reallife experiences. It all comes full circle at the end of a playground’s life cycle; the products are easy to separate into different materials and recycle or dispose of responsibly, adding the element of sustainability to the process. Highlights of the new North Playground, all installed over rubberized safety surfaces, include: • Explorer Dome is a climbing net structure is designed to appeal to children’s imaginations, as there are no prescribed climbing routes. Various ropes and ladders encourage children to stretch, jump, sway, balance, hang, bend, and twist.

• Supernova works for individual, competitive or cooperative play by harnessing the effects of gravity with a unique slanted ring. When one child engages the Supernova, it reacts to their movements and multiple games can occur, like attempting to reach the top while the ring rotates to send you back to the bottom. Each additional child causes a change in the dynamics, so children can operate the rotational speed and direction by moving relative to each other. • Spica is a piece of rotating play equipment that requires much experimentation to master and control its speed. First, a child steps onto a triangular plate and pushes off with their foot. Then they must use their arms to pull their body toward the support handle, causing them to spin faster! As they move their center of gravity away from the handle, they slow down • Zip Line lets children glide through the air down a sloped line, specially designed to ensure a soft landing, making for a breath-taking experience. • Spinner Bowls, originally designed for the purpose of experimental sand play, allow children to climb inside for a spin of their own. The Spinner Bowls provide the physical benefits of vestibular stimulation combined with excellent balance training. After watching the construction over the course of 15 months, our students began enjoying their new playground in December 2016.

6th Annual “Make a Splash” Swim-A-Mile Event: A Day of Family Fun This year’s “Make a Splash” Swim-A-Mile event was another day of fun in the sun! The Gulliver Prep Aquatic Center welcomed more than 180 participants and attendees of all ages. Swimmers dove in and swam up to 72 laps in the pool, raising more than $38,000. Proceeds from the event support the school’s Annual Fund, benefiting the Gulliver Booster Club and the performing and visual arts departments. In addition, a special gift of $5,000 was made to the KiDZ Neuroscience Center at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Before the swimmers hit their lanes, Frank Steel, Gulliver’s head of schools, recognized and thanked our student and parent chairs. Coach Jeff Poppell, Gulliver’s aquatics director, and Mark Schusterman, Gulliver’s athletic director, thanked the participants for their commitment to the event. This year’s Make a Splash included the first-ever Miami Children’s Smiles Relay Race and, for a second year, a Water Polo Shootout. Both were a hit with our event guests. Our top fundraiser, for the second year in a row, was Luca Patterson ‘26, who won a new GoPro camera. Second-place winners were Awwal, Kamal and Kayaat KayRamos, and Sam and Anthony Legaspi. The Holiday Marketplace: A Shopping Extravaganza The Holiday Marketplace, held on November 17, 2015, was an exceptional day of shopping and generated more than $23,000 to support Gulliver’s Annual Fund. Parents, students, faculty, staff and guests were invited to stroll throughout the booths to find unique gifts, edibles, nautical art, personalized children’s items, college and team gear, homemade honey and candles, kids’ toys, stylish hats and handbags, beachwear, jewelry, clothing, plants and more! New this year, guests could stroll down our food court to purchase delicious items such as fine chocolates, organic cold-pressed juices, and natural and organic food – including omelets, wraps and salads – that was made to order. Also new was an afternoon outdoor yoga session. Everyone enjoyed a full day of browsing our vendor offerings, mingling with friends, and watching the Academy band, orchestra and chorus perform. This year’s event was held before the Thanksgiving break, allowing guests to begin holiday shopping earlier in the year. With more than 60 participating vendors, our shoppers were able to find something special for everyone on their lists! 14th Annual Golf Classic and 7th Annual Tennis Tournament The 14th Annual Golf Classic and 7th Annual Tennis Tournament, presented by AA Uniform, took place on January 11, 2016, at the Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club. This year a second tennis round was added, increasing the total spots from 32 to 65 players. Both tournaments were huge successes, raising more than $51,000 to benefit the Booster Club, which supports athletics schoolwide. While taking pride in a winning tradition, Gulliver’s athletic program develops character, builds self-esteem and teaches the values of teamwork and good sportsmanship.

On Saturday, March 12, 2016, more than 400 supporters arrived at the Prep Campus for our annual Signature Event: A Night to Connect, which paid tribute to this year’s school theme of connection. The evening’s festivities kicked off with a cocktail reception that featured a large-scale silent auction, which was open throughout cocktails and dinner. Guests were welcomed with a specialty drink and had the opportunity to take a photo in a photo booth – complete with a backdrop sponsored by Princess World Jewelers and Mr. and Mrs. Kishin Mirpuri and family. Frank Steel, head of schools, welcomed guests with opening remarks during the dinner program and thanked our honorary chairs, Swapnil ‘94 and Erika Shah, and philanthropic chairs, Mr. and Mrs. Kishin Mirpuri, for their commitment to the Gulliver community. He also acknowledged the event co-chairs, Teresita Haskett and Monica Schwyn, for their countless hours of hard work alongside our event committee, and for their commitment to ensuring a beautiful and successful evening. Lady Raiders Executive Lunch The Gulliver Alumni Relations Department held its first ladiesonly networking lunch at BNY Mellon Wealth Management on April 20, 2016. The lunch included a featured discussion on work-life balance by Monique Catoggio. Marisa Alvarez ‘90 and Faequa Khan ‘05, both attendees of previous Raider’s Edge Networking Lunches, enjoyed the new format – especially the

The Gulliver Alumni Association traveled to Atlanta on September 25, 2015, to host a complimentary evening of cocktails and appetizers, live entertainment and a chance to see a film on the biggest screen in town. All alumni from Georgia were invited to take part in the Martinis & IMAX event at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, hosted by Ted Schwartz ‘85 and Joel & Granot Commercial Real Estate. Guests enjoyed a mix of culture and cocktails in a casually cool setting that was perfect for reconnecting and networking with Atlanta-area alumni. The social also provided a great opportunity for alumni in the area to meet Gulliver’s head of schools, Frank Steel. He provided updates on school-wide enhancements and shared a few short-term goals for the Gulliver community.

San Francisco Bay Area Social The Gulliver Alumni Association traveled to California on February 26, 2016. Alumni from the Bay Area were invited to a complimentary evening of cocktails, appetizers and networking at The Battery San Francisco. The social also provided a great opportunity for alumni to meet Gulliver’s head of schools, Frank Steel, and the Miller Drive Campus principal, Melissa Sullivan. Attendee class years ranged from 1982 to 2010. Thank you to co-hosts Doug Mandell ‘87 and Scott Rodrick ‘83.

Alumni gathered at sunset on June 24 to kick off the 2016 Gulliver Alumni Reunion at the newly renovated Eden Roc Miami Beach Resort. Classmates from years 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 2006 gathered around the photo booth, sipped on cocktails and reminisced about the old days at the Prep. The reception took place on the stunning spa terrace overlooking the ocean. Monica Pardo Event Concierge beautifully decorated the terrace with flowers donated by Richards Perdomo ‘04 and The Queens Flowers. Raffle winners Matt Cicero ‘86 and Edidiong Ikpe Ekpo ‘96 were excited to receive a Gulliver swag bag. The laid-back atmosphere allowed alumni to reconnect with classmates they hadn’t seen in years, and the combination of classes offered a unique opportunity for alumni across generations to laugh and bond over similarities as Raider family. The Saturday afternoon pool party welcomed more than 80 alumni plus families, who enjoyed free mimosas in a private section of the ocean garden. DJ Tavin Reiter ‘96 set a relaxing vibe while guests cooled down in the pool, played volleyball

and soaked up some sun. DJ Brooke Grabow Frenz ‘96 also jumped on the turntables to conclude a picturesque afternoon by the ocean. The Saturday evening festivities began with delicious cocktails and South Beach-inspired appetizers. Anniversary classes were entertained during dinner with photos and tunes that took them back to their high school days. Presenting sponsor, Justin Firestone ‘95 and Wheels Up, presented a special award to Richard Shugar ‘86, who traveled the farthest to attend the reunion. Richard, a first-time reunion attendee, spoke about his fond memories of Gulliver and how happy he was to reconnect with his fellow Raiders. Justin shared an important message about supporting Gulliver as a volunteer, hosting interns or guest speaking at the Prep. His message about reengaging with the school offered insight into the trend of Alumni Association programming. Soon after, music filled the ballroom and party sticks were thrust into the air and dancing ensued. The fun continued late into the night.
