From THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT

2018-19 Year in Review

This past year saw major strides forward toward our vision for the future of Gulliver. Our Year in Review acknowledges and celebrates the philanthropic milestones reached during the 2018-19 school year, while showcasing the successes of our students. You will read about numerous academic, artistic, and athletic recognitions and awards, which our students continue to build upon year after year. You will reminisce about the events we hosted for our community, including our Raider Fest family fun day, the annual Gala, and the many opportunities we gave our alumni to reconnect with their alma mater. You will see your dollars at work, enhancing the Gulliver experience every day. You will share in our pride for the Class of 2019 and their outstanding list of college acceptances, as they take their first steps out into the world beyond Gulliver. Our community continues to come together to grow our culture of philanthropy and we are proud to recognize the progress made last year. With your support, we raised more than $1.7 million in total gifts and commitments. This support also furthers our strategic goals in a wide variety of ways. Because of you, we introduced Certified Nature Explore Classrooms at the Academy, nature-based play and teaching spaces designed to help learning thrive. Because of you, awnings were installed above the bleachers at the Prep campus’ Sean Taylor ‘01 Memorial Field, providing a much cooler experience for fans just in time for football season. Because of you, we were able to enhance and upgrade the architectural aesthetics of the Academy courtyard, an initial step of our larger campus master plans. Because of you, our community is more engaged than ever before. On behalf of our Board, administration, faculty, staff and students – thank you for your leadership, vision and momentum. Together, we are bringing the Gulliver of the future to life for the next generation.

He recently broke a school record in shot put with a throw of 52 feet at the 2A regional track and field meet, and had an outstanding showing at districts, setting a personal best of 49 feet, winning the shot put district title. Also a standout on the boys’ weightlifting team, he won his weight class at the regional competition by lifting 400 pounds on the pause bench press and qualifying for states, becoming the first male weightlifter in Gulliver history to advance to the state championships.

PHILANTHROPY:

A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY By Camilla Gallagher P ‘24 ‘28

Organizations with an embedded culture of philanthropy inevitably share a common trait: fundraising is seen as a noble pursuit. As a non-profit school, Gulliver must foster a shared mindset that embraces fundraising fully to secure the ongoing support, and involved participation, of its leadership, staff, and beneficiaries in order to drive its mission forward well into the future. In the end, it is the quality of our bonds - and ability to thoughtfully balance our needs - that will enable us to achieve greatness collectively. A thoughtful process of strategically building a culture of philanthropy at Gulliver is already underway. Our Board of Trustees - a group of individuals who volunteer their time and experience to ensure the school’s success - has been instrumental in steering this change. “Gulliver is an exemplary school with a compelling mission and a long history of success. In the next chapter of the Gulliver story, philanthropic support from Gulliver’s community must play a significant role in propelling the school into the future. The board is in full support and alignment with this critical priority,” says Michalis Stavrinides, the Chair of Gulliver’s Board of Trustees.

2018-19

After nearly 50 years of growth as a highly successful for-profit private school in Florida, Gulliver became a non-profit institution in the year 2000. In its short history as a non-profit school, Gulliver has earned growing support across constituencies. The generosity of our community has helped to successfully set the strategic plan in motion and enhance all aspects of the school experience. Despite making headway in fundraising, however, Gulliver has a path to tread to realize its deeper and broader philanthropic aspirations to advance its long-term vision devoted to educational excellence, with a personal touch, while nurturing fundamental character elements such as honesty, resilience and grit, and graduating mindful students who take action for the Year in Review greater good.

A strong culture of philanthropy denotes a shared mindset, where everyone within the organization understands that fund development is essential to its ability to deliver; where everyone has a part in the process by acting as ambassadors and cultivating lasting relationships; where it’s understood that all gifts are important, even if the value of major donations is recognized for their far-reaching impact; where the community is intentionally engaged and participates as a partner with the school’s leadership; and where culture is not seen as trivial, but rather as an essential measure of our effectiveness. The more this attitude permeates across all corners of the school, the stronger the culture, and the more that culture can become a self-sustaining engine for growth. For a culture of philanthropy to prosper, it is essential to educate the community about the value and promise of a Gulliver education, and to more effectively engage parents, alumni, and other community members in the life of the school. This process starts with the school’s trustees, administration and faculty but, in effect, everyone within the Gulliver family has a part to play. Additionally, philanthropic gifts tend to be driven by a deep-seated, often very personal pursuit aimed at making a difference in a community - or the world. “At the core, philanthropy is a form of self definition. It allows us to define what we value and believe. In many ways it is a significant portion of our personal

legacy,” says Jay Goulart, Gulliver’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement. Once a true culture of philanthropy sets in, everyone is involved in the process of inviting donors to invest in our mission, and instead of feeling embarrassed, we take pride in asking, knowing we are offering people who share our values an opportunity to also enact their own. In fact, as long as we are meeting valued needs, it is our responsibility to raise funds to ensure our mission continues. Ultimately, our donors want to give not merely to “keep the lights on” but mainly to see the broader impact of achieving the school’s mission. This is also at the heart of why building a culture of philanthropy is so important. A strong partnership with community members is the fuel that propels Gulliver forward and elevates our capacity to deliver. When we volunteer, we feel vested in the cause and feel a shared sense of responsibility for supporting the school. And when fund development is widely viewed and valued as a mission-aligned initiative to achieve sustainability, everyone can promote philanthropy and articulate a case for giving. Moreover, gone is the discomfort that often underlies fundraising initiatives as fund development is understood to be a noble cause shared by all. In the long run, the more our entire community engages and participates as a cohesive ensemble to elevate our overall experience, the greater the benefits for all.

Giving

Three out of every four dollars raised through Gulliver Giving comes from a group of dedicated parents, alumni, and friends who make sustaining gifts each year. These donors are dedicated to ensuring that our students experience the fullest possible range of intellectual, athletic, artistic, and programmatic opportunities. These gifts make up 85% of The Gulliver Fund. Donors at these levels are true collaborators in a great enterprise, and they enjoy a special relationship with each other and with leaders of the School. Through their giving they help bring the School’s most important goals within reach, and through their example, they inspire other parents, alumni, and friends to support Gulliver.

Recognizing supporters Recognizing supporters whose lifetime giving to whose exceeds lifetime$100,000 giving to Gulliver

Gulliver exceeds $100,000

Those members of the Gulliver family who give $100,000 or more over time are welcomed to the 1926 Society. Their generosity strengthens our ability to create and preserve innovative academic programs, develop initiatives that improve the Gulliver community, attract and retain top-notch faculty, and provide scholarships and educational opportunities for deserving students.
