EVOLUTION OF THE MOTORCYCLE AND ENTHUSIAST WHY ARE MOTORCYCLES ON ALMOST EVERYONE’S BUCKET LIST? Before we can dive into the understanding of the motorcycle enthusiast, we need to have a greater understanding of how this exhilarating machine came to be. Now, most everyone have a base understanding of the motorcycle and some of the history. But do you know how far back the history goes? Oh, some of you will say 1901 for Indian Motorcycles and 1903 for Harley Davidson. These two companies did indeed put the motorcycle industry on the map, no question. Let me digress just a bit; traveling back in time to Michelangelo. Some would say that it all began with him, the true inventor of the bicycle. He did not actually construct the bicycle, but merely put brush to paper drawing a body, wheels, pedals, and a chain. That was it. No handle bars or steering column. What this did was cause the minds of inventors to churn. In 1791, There’s Comte de Sirvac inventor of the ‘Hobby Horse”; consisting of two wheels, a body, and Lucius Copeland 1894 a steering bar, no pedals or chain. It was more of a conversation piece with no real functionality. Inventor after inventor came closer and closer to perfecting the “Bicycle”. In 1860, a blacksmith in Paris, Pierre Michaux, own the first company to construct a bicycle with pedals call the Velocipede. The first motorcycle can be traced back as far as 1867 when Pierre’s son Ernest Michaux fitted a Butler’s patent Velocycle small steam engine to one the ‘Velocipedes’. Moving forward in 1868, an American, Sylvester H. Roper of Roxbury Massachusetts, developed a twin cylinder steam velocipede, with a coal fired boiler between the wheels. In 1881, Lucius Copeland of Phoenix, Arizona designed a much smaller steam boiler which could drive the large rear wheel of an American Star high-wheeler at 12 mph. In 1887 the first successful ‘moto-cycle’ was produced. “Did you know that the first commercial design for a self-propelled bicycle was a three-wheeler called the Butler Petrol Cycle?” In 1885, German inventor, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach worked with Nicolaus Otto, an engineer who in 1876 developed the “four-stroke combustible engine”. Daimler took the idea of Sylvester H. Roper’s Velocipede and added Nicolaus Otto’s engine and hence came to be the first true adapReplica of the 1885 Daimler & Maybach tation of a gas powered “Motorcycle”, better known as “Motor Bicycle” Through the course of time, there were many inventors and companies that saw this self-propelled bicycle as the future. In 1901, the first motorcycle with a 239 cc engine was created. In 1902 the bicycle maker Indian 1911 Triumph decided to extend its focus to include motorcycles. A year later they became the largest manufacturer with an annual production of over 500 units. Other firms were Norton and Birmingham Small Arms Company began motorbike production in 1902 and 1910, respectively. 8
www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
Also in 1901, the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company was founded, eventually producing over 20,000 bikes per year. In 1903, William Harley, Walter Davidson and Arthur Davidson started the American company Harley-Davidson and by 1920 they were largest manufacturer with their motorcycles being sold by dealers in 67 countries. Through the decades more and more motorcycle companies came to be; BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, & Yamaha to name a few. Let’s rush forward to the 21st century. There are choppers, street rods, cruisers, small bikes, large bikes, bikes that are quiet, bikes that are Very Loud, and my personal favorite….” The Trike”. So here begs the real question. Why is this two or three 2014 Indian Chief wheeled form of transportation on everyone’s bucket list? People want to own one or at the very least ride one. Several years ago my aunt voiced that she really wanted to ride on the back of a motorcycle. So my husband and I went and picked her up. She got on the back of his bike with him and we took her for a quick 15 minute ride. When we got back to her house, she was grinning from ear to ear. She said that she can check that off her 2009 Harley Triglide list of things that she has always wanted to do. What is so fascinating with this machine? Is it because it’s uninhibited, a sense of freedom, an adrenaline rush? I would say yes and much more. It’s the feeling of exhilaration, the wind racing past you. When you are racing down the highway are 60, 70 or 80 mph and then you come to a stop, how your skin is tingly, the hairs on your body are standing on end. Your senses are heightened; everything from your reflex actions to your sense of sound and even smells. This spring, when the trees and flowers are in full bloom, take a ride and smell how the honeysuckle is so sweet in the air. You can never experience that traveling in a car. Or in the middle of a beautiful summer day H-D Serial Number One when you are riding down a curvy road and you come up on a glorious canopy of trees that shelters you from the hot sun and how the shade gives off a cool breeze. There is nothing to obstruct your views of Gods landscaping. Why would you not want to experience this? There are some that associate motorcycle riders as being Bad Ass. Some are and some aren’t. The one common thread that we all have is the love of the open road. There is a certain camaraderie between bikers. Now, not to say Harley –Davidson Softail Deluxe that some bikers want to have it out with other bikers, that’s just the nature of the beast. But, I would like to stay positive in all this. Most bikers will come together for a greater cause, such as local and national charities alike. What I think is the best part about being a motorcycle enthusiast sums it up in two words…”THE RIDE”. So the next time you decide to take “A RIDE” and you pass your fellow biker, remember to extend your hand add a wave saying, “Yeah, I know what’s on your mind”. Remember to Live Free, Ride Hard and always be safe. C. Blanton

“TRIKE” is not “REALLY” a motorcycle. Well, I’m here to tell you it is and more. Being a trike rider myself, I can firmly say that it is indeed a motorcycle. The only difference is the drive train system pulls two wheels instead of one. To name a few similarities, They both have the engine sitting directly below the gas tank. They both have handlebars with a clutch, a throttle and braking levers. You straddle them when they are driven. And they both can be very very loud. Trikes have been around for decades. If you recall the article a few pages back, i mentioned that the first commercial self propelled bicycle just so happened to be a trike. That was back in the late 1800’s. Harley Davidson is no stranger to trike production. Before 2009 when the “Tri-Glide Ultraclassic” was introduced in their lineup, Harley Davidson produced the “Servi Car” from 1932-1978. The Servi Car was designed back in the Great Depression when Harley Davidson was desperate to expand their product base hence increasing sale production. The basis of this design was to target the automotive service industries. The use of the Servi car was intended to be towed behind a vehicle that was being delivered to a specific destination. Once the vehicle was delivered the driver would unhitch the servi car and drive it back to the garage. In addition, it was used by small businesses and mobile vender’s such as milk and ice cream delivery. It also proved to be very popular with police departments and was still being used all the way into the 1990’s. t s been said that a
There are 2 different types of trike configurations. One being the least popular. The “Tadpole” design. Which is the two wheel in front and the single wheel in the back. This style of trike is not as common. The earliest production that I can find is back in the 1980’s. But that design still used a steering wheel instead of handlebars. Then there’s the Can Am Spyder. It’s production started back in 2009 by the Bombardier Recreational Products. The styling came from a modern snowmobile look and uses an ATV like chassis. Having the two wheels in front serves several purposes. One being more aerodynamic causing better fuel efficiency and more transversal stability. Having two wheels driving instead of one. 20
www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
Then, there is the most popular trike, the “Delta” design. Which is the single wheel in front and the two wheels in back. Many of you may remember those three-wheeler ATV’s. As soon as you apply the brake and turn the wheel, you tip over. Not very safe. In fact there was a ten year ban placed on the sales of the three-wheeler ATV in the United States back in 1988. So, as the production of the Motor Trike started becoming increasing popular in the late nineties and into the early 2000’s, people questioned the stability of these three wheelers. Are they going to tip over? The trike conversion companies like Lehman, Motortrike, Champion and DFT (Darn Fine Trikes) worked diligently to help prevent the tilting or tipping of the trike. Lehman has the patented “No Lean Suspension”. Motortrike has their Patented Ladder Bar Suspension. Champion and DFT both offer the independent rear suspension. These are just a few of the trike conversion companies out there. There are so many different and unique trikes out there today. Trikes today are a great way for those whose can’t ride a two wheeled motorcycle due to injury, age or even fear. I would not say that a trike is a womans bike. There are A LOT of women riders that own a two wheeler. Sufficed to say Trikes do allow woman and men to get out on the open road, which may not have occurred otherwise. I’ve been riding coming up on eleven years. I have never been able to even keep a bicycle upright. When I became increasing interested in having my own motorcycle, I attempted to ride a two wheeler. No such luck.(I hit a light pole during my training course. Don’t tell anyone, OK.) The first thing my husband told me was, “if you’re afraid of the bike, then don’t try to ride it”. He said that I just needed to stay on the back with him. I still wasn’t satisfied, Then came our first experience in Sturgis 2001! You know when you are watching TV and watch a scene where someone sees something that they have always wanted? You see a halo effect around that object and you hear the angels in chorus. Well, that was my experience when I got “THE A”TRIKE”TION”. I was doing a little happy dance and turning into a “Spice Girl” “I’ll tell you what I want, What I really really want.” OK, so I was scaring my husband just a bit. But, this was perfect. A way of getting me on my own motorcycle. It was about a year and a half later when I finally got my Trike. It was a 100th anniversary Harley Davidson 1200 sportster custom with a Lehman conversion kit on the back. I owned that for about thirteen months. I put about 13000 miles on it. I was ready for the big leagues. after my sporty, I upgraded to a Fatboy, With a Motortrike conversion. LOVED IT. I had that baby tricked out. Chrome, chrome and more chrome. It was decked out with custom paint and airbrushing, custom wheels with matching rotors. The works. It was amazing. After about six years, I decided it was time for luxury. I upgraded once more and now I’m a proud owner of a Harley Davidson Tri-Glide. I love the fact that I can be out there on the open road, having the control and enjoying every minute of it.
Well, that’s my story, What’s yours? I would love to hear all about your first A”TRIKE”TION. Email me a photo of your Trike along with your story. Who knows, you may just find your story in next months issue. editor@fullthrottle-magazine.com Thank you for being a part of such an elite club. Keep riding, Keep smiling and be safe. C.Blanton

Why does St. Charles Harley-Davidson put on Seminars and why should I attend them? Happy New Year and welcome to your first of, hopefully, many tech articles for Full Throttle Magazine. During the course of our days, Marshall and I spend a lot of time advising and counseling owners (new and seasoned) through issues, questions and subjects that they don’t even realize they already have the answers to. The answers too many of the common questions are usually right in your owner’s manual. Taking the time to read it can save time, frustration and sometimes embarrassment. From something as simple as checking the
position of your run/stop switch before trying to start you bike, to changing your security fob batteries before calling a tow truck.
So why have seminars? Pretty easy answer actually, but like most easy answers there are multiple layers to it. First: Building relationships with the St. Charles Harley-Davidson staff, specialists and other riders. It gives us an opportunity to meet you. Look you in the eye, shake your hand and, not only welcome you our home, let you know we really do care. Depending on the topic, if you attended, that means everyone else in the room probably shares something in common with you. Second: Education. It gives us an opportunity to spread information and share stories to larger groups of riders that will hopefully retain enough of the information to pass it on to a fellow rider in need someday.
From a basic New Riders Seminar, to a Hard Core Performance Workshop, you can see, touch, feel and learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the bikes we all love. Whenever possible we provide physical examples of our subject matter. We also take the opportunity to share the latest and greatest information we get from the motor company. As the fastest growing dealership in our district 5 years running, we have special access to guest speakers, updates, new vehicle models and parts. We get the front line information before it ever makes the forums. Finally, the reason we’re open for business; “Sales”. Did I mention we are also consistently the

number one dealer in new and used bike sales?
These seminars
not only provide the information, it’s our chance to make you special offers that are not advertised anywhere.
They are only offered to attendees as a way of thanking them, not only for coming in on a Saturday morning, but to really deliver savings to the bottom line price. When it comes to SHOWING you that we truly appreciate your business, we puts our money where our mouth is. Marshall and I look forward to, not only, exceeding your service and accessory needs through our seminars, but
making sure you get every moment of enjoyment out of your special vehicle.
Safe.
See you next month. Ride
Joel, Marshall and the St. Charles Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew!
Incredible Update: Marshall and I put this article together to let everyone know about the value and reasoning behind what we do in our seminars. Saturday January 11th we were in awe of the turnout for our first seminar of the year.
Over 80 riders came in for a 10am performance seminar. The very attentive crowd sat with us for a very infor-
mative hour of discussion regarding all things performance
related and then some.
Marshall and I had an amazing return, over 85%, of our surveys returned and I can confidently tell you, we heard you loud and clear. 90% rated our presentation Above Average or Excellent. 95% of attendees were current owners of motorcycles 48% own models 2012 and newer 83% have endorsements 88% found the presentation informative and a resounding 100% said they would attend another of our workshops Marshall and I are taking every suggestion made to heart, and he has every intention of making each seminar this year better than ever. Make sure you’re on our email and contact list so you know when our next seminar is and what we will be covering.
A massive and heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, and of course everyone who helped make it possible. We are humbled and grateful for each and every one of you. Joel Mercado and Marshall Tucker www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

Are

Daytona Bike Week has going on since January 24, 1937. It started out as the Inaugural Running of the Daytona 200 which, in the early years, was nicknames the “Handlebar Derby”. The event was discontinued in 1942 because of world war II. The American Motorcycle
Association felt “it was in the best interest of national defense “ to cancel the event. Even though the races were canceled people would still show up for the “Unofficial” party call Bike Week. The motorcycle races resumed in 1947 along with the Bike Week rally parties. But, that is not the only reason that everyone loves to gather to the warmer climates to kick off the riding season. This is a place that you can leave your inhibitions behind. To just let loose and have an amazing time. Below, I’ve listed several events that will take place during the ten day event.

RIDE THE LOOP
The Loop begins with a northerly trek at the foot of the Granada Bridge on John Anderson Drive in Ormond Beach. Going North, riders are greeted by a cathedral of trees up to the Highbridge Road where they hang a left (to go west) and go over the bridge and the Intracoastal Waterway (the Halifax River). There are several places to stop along the way and just enjoy the Florida countryside. After more winding turns, you’ll come upon Walter Boardman road where you will make another turn that takes you further west to Old Dixie Highway. When you reach
Old Dixie Highway, take another left (to go south) toward Ormond Beach.

CRACK UP’S The Heart Surgeon and the Motorcycle Mechanic
A Motorcycle mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a motorcycle when he spotted a well known heart surgeon in his shop. The surgeon was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc, can I ask you a question?” The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So, Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take valves out, fix ‘em, put ‘em back in and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over and whispered to the mechanic ... “Try doing it with the engine running!”
Hung
A babe and a biker were fooling around in a meadow. The biker falls into a mud hole and is sinking. He calls to the babe to go and get the farmer to help pull him to safety. The babe runs to the farmer but the farmer cannot be found. So she drives the farmer’s BMW back to the mud hole and ties some rope around the bumper. She then throws the other end of the rope to the biker, and drives the car forward saving him from sinking. A few days later they were in the meadow again and this time the babe fell into the mud hole. The babe yelled to the biker to go and get some help from the farmer. The biker said, “No, I think I can stand over the hole.” So he stretched his legs over the width of the hole and said, “Grab for my privates and pull yourself up.” So the babe grabbed hold of the biker’s privates and pulled herself to safety. The moral of the story: If you’re hung like a biker, you don’t need a BMW to pick up babes!
Too Little, Too Late
A guy is at the Pearly Gates, hoping to be admitted, and St. Peter says to the guy, “I can’t see that you did anything really good in your life, but you never did anything bad either. I tell you what, if you can tell me one really good deed that you did, you’re in.” So the guy says, “Once I was driving down the road and saw a gang of bikers assaulting this poor girl. So I pulled over, got out my car, grabbed a tire iron and walked straight up to the gang’s leader--a huge ugly guy with a studded leather jacket, bald head but with hair all over his body, and a chain running from his nose to his ear. Undaunted, I ripped the chain out of his nose and ear and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and, wielding my tire iron, yelled to the rest of them, ‘You leave this poor, innocent lady alone! You’re all a bunch of sick, deranged animals! Go home before I teach you all a lesson in pain!’” Impressed, St. Peter says, “Really? I can’t seem to find this in your file. When did this happen?” “Oh, about two minutes ago.”
Laid Off Biker
A laid off biker walks into the local welfare office, marches straight up to the counter and says, “Hi. You know, I just hate drawing welfare. I’d really rather have a job.” The social worker behind the counter says, “Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful nymphomaniac daughter. You’ll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he’ll supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You’ll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You will have to satisfy her sexual urges. You’ll be provided a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting salary is $200,000 a year.” The guy, wide-eyed, says, “You’re puttin’ me on!” The social worker says, “Yeah, well, your lie started it.”
