Harley-Davidson & Our Military

W ith Veteran’s Day around the corner, we find ourselves reflecting on the Military history of our great nation. Through it all, we fight and persevere. Harley-

Davidson has been honored to be a part of this history, even if just to assist our heroes. May we never forget those who have defended us. The first official order of Harley-Davidson motorcycles was in 1916 for General “Black Jack” Pershing during the US/Mexican border conflict. Pershing felt that all new tech was going to give the US an edge, and the agility and ease of use of the H-D bikes was a major asset. This new venture led to a decades-long partnership. During World War I, one half of HarleyDavidson’s production went to the military. Many types of new models were developed to suit the needs of the soldiers on the front lines. Harley-Davidson supplied the US and her Allies with bikes, including the WLA, a Navyspecific model adapted from the Model U, which was built for Shore Patrol. Almost 70,000 WLA bikes were produced! Harley-Davidson created the Quartermasters School exclusively for training military mechanics on H-D motorcycles in 1917. After the war, this would eventually become the Service School.

Harley-Davidson-WLA.jpg

Corporal Roy Holtz of Wisconsin was made famous for being the first American to enter Germany, only a day after the Armistice was signed. This historic moment was captured WWI 1 in a photo, which shows he was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Harleys were so well known for being a part of the Allied forces that the units that led the convoys into liberated cities throughout Europe became known as “Liberators.” CONTINUE ON PAGE 5

Welcome to November my fellow bikers. The summer has come and gone and we are off to a mild winter, I hope. The summer was filled with some excellent event and a ton of awesome rides. Every year the amount of rides and events seems to grow by leaps and bounds. We here at Full Throttle Magazine have been proud to sponsor many of the events and fundraiser and will continue to try and help the biking community with our support as we are able. If you have an events or fundraisers that you would like FTM to help promote please give us a call or email us and we will always set aside the time to discuss your event and see how we can help bring more attention and more people to your venue. We enjoy sending our crews out to our sponsored events to capture the day in pictures and post them on our Facebook site. Those pictures are always there for anyone to copy and share and we never stamp our logo on them so you may use them without that distraction or the worry to try and crop that out. So feel free to copy, share and enjoy all the pictures we post throughout the year on our Facebook. The St Louis Auto Show and STL Motorcycle Show are back at the America Center on January 24th -27th 2019. There is a new platform this year; the St Louis Auto Show and the STL Motorcycle show will be combined into one huge show. This gives all of us the opportunity to visit both shows and only purchase one ticket. This is going to be not only a huge show, but a fun and exciting show for the whole family. Check Full Throttle Magazine for discount specials. We will look forward to seeing you there.

For every New and unopened toy you bring, we will pass out tickets. We will be drawing tickets and giving away gift cards, t-shirts and other prizes throughout the day and evening. Please let us show these kids that bikers do care. Make sure you stop by on December 8th and help make a child smile. Please, let me see you there..

World War II began in September of 1939, but the United States joined the fray in the final weeks of 1941. This brought Harley-Davidson back into their partnership with the US Military. Production focus pivoted to Military needs, nearly halting civilian production completely. The Service School reverted back to the Quartermasters School and resumed the training of military mechanics.

Harley-Davidson-History5

In 1942, Harley-Davidson was the recipient of an Army-Navy “E” Award for “excellence in wartime production.” This would be the first of four “E” Awards that they would receive. World War II was the first time many servicemen encountered a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and the experience stayed with them upon their return stateside. Nearly 60,000 WLA models were created for the war effort during World War II, meaning many soldiers experienced the ride first-hand. This relationship developed into a special bond that Harley-Davidson and Military personnel maintain to this day. The Vietnam War saw the decline of motorcycles used in the arena of battle. The advances in technology depleted the need for them in the battlefield, even in reconnaissance where they were used so often in wars past. This did not stop the relationship between members of the Military and Harley-Davidson, however. The practice that took hold during World War II of soldiers returning to war and purchasing their own Harley grew with time. Many Vietnam veterans actively participate in riding groups that support charities and organizations, including providing a motorcycle escort for fallen soldiers and first responders. Harley-Davidson is dedicated to those who serve this great country. We are lucky to have veterans and current Military personnel riding in our ranks to this day. They are a major part of the Harley-Davidson family and we thank them for all that they have done and continue to do to for our country.

Bikers Helping Bikers

It’s all in the name! Our organization has been around for 30 years since Tom Hartbauer thought that the time was right for someone to “Help Our Own”. Through the years we have grown from H.O.G. Chapters supporting and helping fund us, to our Incorporation in 1997 and becoming a 501 (C) (3) NotFor-Profit recognized by the Federal Gov’t. in 2003. We are proud that our Officers, Board and all our Representatives are bikers and UNPAID VOLUNTEERS who do this out of the love of motorcycles, those who ride and the lifestyle, no matter what you ride, what you wear or who you are. If you encounter a True Hardship and are a Biker living within 100 miles of the Gateway Arch, we want to assist you financially with a “Hand Up…Not a Hand Out” when you need it most. Our application process is pretty straightforward, but some requirements are in place. We offer only financial assistance. To date we have disbursed over $300,000.00 to more than 600 bikers, and is some instances their family members. Hardships are not only due to motorcycle related injuries, but illnesses and loss due to floods, fires and other accidents. Our organization is officially named “The Hartbauer/McBride Memorial Foundation, Incorporated”. But through our “Biker Fund” we are: Bikers Helping Bikers You can view our history and almost anything you want to know about us on our Website shown below as well as our Facebook page.

Ride Safe and Thumbs Up.

WINTER RIDING

How’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest

and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Hope everyone had a great Summer and enjoying the cool air of Fall. The leaves are changing and the day light is getting shorter. Before we know it the leaves will be falling from the trees so be careful for any on the roadway as they will be very slick. With that in mind we want to make sure we can extend our riding season into the late fall and early winter and be comfortable doing so. Harley-Davidson has come out with many different ways to make this possible. First off lets get started on some different things to think about before you head out on your next ride in the cooler months. Always keep a battery tender on your bike so that way you know it will be able to turn over without any hesitation. Also check your tires before every ride. I know we say this a lot but the tire pressure drops a lot as the temperatures start to lower. Now the big kicker that a lot of people don’t think about is wind chill. A normal Fall day for us is in the low 60s. With this in mind on a 60 degree day and riding at 60mph that makes the wind temperature in the low 40s. So make sure to have the proper accessories on you and your motorcycle both. Lets talk about some of those available for you here at the dealership. For your motorcycle there are a few things you can do to help cut down that wind. One of the main things to help keep it off your core is to install a windshield or taller one for those rider that have a fairing on the bike. To help keep it off your legs Harley has hard fairing lowers for the touring family and also soft lowers. As long as you have an engine guard mounted on your bike the soft lowers will buckle to your frame and be supported by the engine guard. This combination will limit the amount of wind hitting you directly as your cruising down the road. Another great thing to have is heated grips and seat. When your out on a 65 degree day and really enjoying the ride then the next thing you know the sun is going down and the temperature is as well but you forgot your winter gloves and chaps. Both of these two items will be key to making sure your reaction time is what it needs to be and you make it home safely. Also since the sun is going down earlier each day make sure you can see and be seen by installing LED’s on the front and rear of the motorcycle.

Now for you the rider and passenger on the motorcycle. The best all year riding gear that

Page 24

www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

Harley has to offer is from the FXRG line and gives you multiple layers to add to keep you warm and dry. The base layer will help you regulate body temperature and manage moisture against your skin. These Airguide Channels work like spacers against a heavier top layer. They also have Isopads across the shoulders that hold warmth next to your body. The outer layer from FXRG is waterproof and will keep the heat in while all the vents are closed. When the temperatures start to drop below 60 and you need that extra warmth the mid layer comes into action. The FXRG thinsulate Mid-Layer insulates against the cold by trapping air close to the body for greater warmth and comfort to extend your fall and winter riding. For the lower half of your body FXRG has there Waterproof overpants that will attached to the outer layer jacket to help keep all the cold air from your body. Also they have a base layer to go under your overpants. Some of the other items offered in the FXRG line is Full Face helmets to keep the wind off your neck and face as well as waterproof gloves and textile style jeans. If comfort, protection and quality are what you are after the FXRG line has something for everyone. The best thing to me is that FXRG jackets and overpants are fully backed by a limited lifetime warranty so you will have peace of mind knowing you will always be covered for your next adventure on two wheels. The last items of under clothing I want to talk about is for those riders that want to ride into the winter months as the temperatures start to drop and the highs are in the upper 40s and lows in the 30s. If you are that person then Heated Gear is a must. I rode in this temperature once before I invested in some heated gear and couldn’t believe the difference. The Heated Mid-Layer Jacket, waterproof riding overpant & waterproof Gauntlet gloves all connect to each other and powered by the bike with a built-in temperature controller that has 3 LED coded heat-level settings. Harley also has the one touch liners available as well from glove liners to shirt and pants along with socks but in my experience the mid layers work way better at keeping the body warm in the coldest of temperatures when you need it most. The biggest thing for winter riding is making sure your tires are properly inflated and all your body parts are covered from the wind. Don’t miss out on all the events going on throughout the fall and winter. The winter riding seminar will be October 27th as we will talk more about what to do and not to do along with our chili cook off following. Then, on November 3rd we will have a day filled with thanks to all our great customers at our Customer Appreciation Day. To end the month we will have our Black Friday sale on November 23rd. Check out our website and Facebook page for all the details. Thanks again for taking the time to read this and please come into St. Charles Harley-Davidson and ask for me, Zach White or give me a call @ 636-946-6487 and also by email, zach@stcharlesharleydavidson.com to set up a consultation! I’m here to make all your Harley www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

Her ’s Now

W ell here we are again at a time of the year that most of us don’t like, especially you who read Full Throttle. We don’t want to let go of the warm nights and hot days. We want to ride or drive our toys all year long. Some of us call it Time For A Change others just call it a change. That brings me to the title of this story; “Her’s Now”. Now, don’t get too excited and think the poor guy lost his car; in fact, it was the total opposite. The owner of this beautiful 1970 Nova, Jerry Neuhaus was lucky enough to have a cool wife Lynn, who loves cars as much as he did. I’ve known Jerry and Lynn many years and I really don’t remember seeing Lynn drive the Nova, even the day we did the photo shoot I asked her to move it and she told me she doesn’t drive it. Recently they bought a second Nova, a 1964 SS, that Jerry intended to build for Lynn. As I was prepping for the story I asked if they had a name for the car, the answer was no. Although their daughter Ava is young she said “it is called Orange Betty” and the SS is called Black Betty. Since our photo shoot I have seen Lynn driving the ’70 at least 4 times now and Jerry in the SS, I told Jerry it’s Her’s Now. So it was given a temporary name. Jerry has owned this Nova since he was ten years old, in 1986. When he finally turned Page 36

16 he started driving it around in Red Oxide primer, working at Burger King trying to save the money for that first paint job. In 1996 it was time to start racing more seriously. Jerry was a machinist and he wasn’t going to pay anyone to work on his Nova so he did the Back Half modifications, added a roll cage and made room for the bigger tires he needed. But he made sure he was able to retain the back seat. Since he raced most weekends at the Mid America Raceway, the M. A. R., as we all know it; many of you remember the FAST end of the track was very dangerous. In the fall of 1998 (wow 20 years ago) Jerry met the guard rail. Not giving up, Jerry took on the project of repairing the car as needed and had it repainted the same Dark Teal Metallic. In 2001 when Jerry and Lynn met, neither one of them slowed down the love of racing until the track closed around 2004. Still in love with cars and racing, they just had to change where they did it, to the streets not the racing because that is just wrong. If you get caught! In 2007 they wanted a change, so Jerry did what a machinist do, he made the body perfect and for the first time, he painted a whole car. He used SIKKEN’S Sunset Pearlescent. That same year he converted the car to use E-85, better for the environment. Some of you may be wondering about the mechanical parts of this car too, sure it looks cool but…Jerry gave me some of the info but won’t disclose all of it, let’s say one of their favorite things is still the G-Force when you nail it. When you have a 496 cubic inch BBC, Turbo 400 with a Trans Brake with 4.30:1 Eaton Posi-traction and a ladder bar suspension you can use the 29-14.5X15” Hoosier Quick Time Pro’s. The wheels of choice are the 15X4 & 15X10 Center Line Warrior. Like most cars, you really can’t appreciate it fully until you hear it in person and this one is no different. When it fires up everyone takes notice and hopes no law enforcement is around when they take off. To answer some of you who might be asking, YES it is still carbureted.
