Boy of an innocent smile that had t olive a suffering that you did not look or ask for. Girl that had to experience a deep pain before you got the chance to enjoy a love so deep and real. Children that found the feeling of loneliness before the love of a family. Innocent angel, you cry for those huge expectations that you had when you where coming on birth and were met by an emptiness that didn’t allow you to say mother or father here I am. You find a feeling of understanding in those who have shared your same pain. Even though there are the ones that fight and work for you, we don’t fully grasp your feeling, but we are here to tell you, here we are for you and for you we have worked. This letter is dedicated to our orphan children, a Project of Fundated and the Ingrid & Lars Hannell foundation. A project that has as a target helping these children and creating for them the opportunities to dare dream be loves and reaching their dreams.

ORPHANS, BUT NOT ALONE

It’s for us a privilege and a joy to present a small part of this program that without a doubt it has change the lives of these children which society calls orphans because they don’t have one or both parents, but we consider them part of the Fundated family and that why we say they are not alone. May you our dear reader be welcome to another edition of FUNDATED NEWS were we hope to tell you the story of these orphan children from the words of Professor José Maria Sipac. Surely you will also find other articles and stories that will be of your delight and interest.

Editor’s Letter

This edition of Fundated News has an interview with Professor José Maria Sipac, in which he speaks about the scholarship and orphan programs.

FUNDATED NEWS had the pleasure to sit and talk with the professor José Maria Sipac, coordinator for Fundated; he assists in both the scholarship and orphan program. He gave FUNDATED NEWS and interview and he spoke about his experience in the program throughout the years, this is what he had to say:

FN: Professor, Which are the projects in which you are involved with Fundated?

“We have 53 children that get a grocery bag in order for them to fight malnutrition”

Professor Sipac: At the present moment I am in charge of two programs, one regarding education and the other in health. The group of scholars is the one in education; the other group is made out of orphan children in which there are also students and others that are very small, we could say they are from 1 year up. At the present time we have 53 children that get a grocery bag in order for them to fight malnutrition, at the same time they get medical attention that Fundated gives with a doctor that is in charge of checking them and giving a medical prescription, after that the medicine is bought by Fundated. FN: How is the scholarship project professor?

JOSÉ MARÍA SIPAC

FN: How long have you been in charge of these projects? Professor Sipac: Well in the project of scholarships it’s more or less 11 years, if I’m not mistaken we started in the year 200. Now, in the orphan project I have around 6 years. FN: What changes have you seen in the children and teenagers that are in both programs from the moment they start to when they are in a more advanced stage of the program? Profesor Sipac: In the orphan children we started taking the small ones, and progressively we started to attend to them, first only with a grocery bag. Later together with Fundated the idea came up of giving them medical attention. Like I have said, these children have or had malnutrition or other diseases. So, through the grocery bag we started to see a positive change, because in the bag we give them; milk, sugar, supplements and everything that can benefit their health, one year later we started seeing the real changes in this children, they were recovered from malnutrition and to the present date around 30 have finished the program.

Professor Sipac: At present moment we have more or less 67 in high school level, 42 are freshmen, and a small group that we call “special” that we give them 80 quetzales and there are 2 that get 100 quetzales each month. We call them special because in a way we have seen that they are in great need, so with the person in charge from Fundated she being the psychologist Lily Armas, we formed this group that I thing is of great benefit.

Nevertheless we don’t leave them completely, because if they are studying we pass them to the scholarship program to help them with their studies. The vision of the program is that on the long run they obtain a degree. At the present time there is 1 young lady that began the program at age 6 and now she is in the fourth year of her career. No won the scholarship program sometimes some quit because they don’t win their school year. But, thanks to God we have successfully seen 150 more or less finish school and they have careers, such as: nurses, accountant, teachers, etc. There are several young men and women that have obtained their degree. FN: Professor, What do you feel when you see this Young children enter the programs and see their progress and hat they are able to obtain a objective like getting a degree as a teacher, nurse, etc? Professor Sipac: To be honest, i feel satisfied, like I tell them every time we meet, I speak to them about how education was before. In our time education was very rigid and there were not many opportunities. Nevertheless, we stood strong and here we are. I tell them my story so that they can take into account how important it is to study. I feel very satisfied because I come from a family of low resources and my parents, may they rest in peace, they couldn’t give me the

I feel that many people go through “I will continue the same thing, so when we got forward as long called to start this program in scholarships I said to myself: Well as God gives now that I have retired it’s me life and important to help people and that I until the have done, and it pleases me to see this young kids graduate and institution can to see that they have listened to help …” their parents and thanks to the counseling given from Fundated and other talks that they get inviting them to continue their studies. Some take it very seriously and they even go to my house to say thank you for attending to them and to thank Fundated. Like I tell the director of Fundated; “I will continue forward as long as God gives me life and until the institution can help these people” FN: Professor, What motivates you to keep moving on this struggle, in which you already have 11 years of dedication on helping with these projects? Professor Sipac: I have always said that I wanted to help young children to have a change; maybe it’s a Little difficult for all of Patzun to have a change. But with what we are doing I think it motivates generations to be changing. Like I said

chance to study and I didn’t pass 6th grade, but they along the way I said I will not stay like this. So I decided to continue with great effort and when I was working I started again my high school and with the help of my wife, me a married man with the help of my wife, she helped me finish. So when I was old I graduated from school.

Like I tell them, before there was no electricity here, it was with a candle or gas. Nevertheless, there are retired teachers that graduated on those conditions and now with so many opportunities the young children don’t take advantage of it, but we will continue in this in order to see Patzun overcome the illiteracy that it has now.

previously, If God gives me life and Fundated wants, I will continue to support the children, I wish there were more children, but the negative side is that sometimes children don’t collaborate on their part. In freshman as well as in more advanced grades they start very well but later when the exams come, they come down and that discourages a bit But I have told them to give it their all to their studies, especially now that there is so many things like computers that make it much easier, not like before.

According to some studies done by the joint of supervision and control of narcotics, organization of the United Nations, in Central America the profit of the drug cartels is so big that in some cases, they are bigger than the entire economy of the country they use to transport the Money from Mexico to South-America and the United States, which puts in danger the security and stability of the politics of each state.

To this situation violence joins specially in Guatemala,

Honduras and El Salvador, which they are calling “The Northern Triangle, where gangs are operating in each country have made alliances with criminal international organizations, registering in this triangle, the highest rate of murders in the world.

The drugtraficking phenomenon is not new in Guatemala, its geographic position and its border with Mexico has made it a preferred stop for drugs that have as a heading the United States. Also the Money that is sent because of the drugs that are coming from South-America pass through the Caribbean and central America heading to Africa, where later they are introduced in the European market.

The crimes committed by this cartel are well planned and have messages for both the authorities and people, for which fear is starting to have an effect. There are attorneys from the public ministry that are resigning and others that are asking transfers to safer zones, and if that was little, the government has said that it can’t protect the judges or public servants, which reveals its weakness.

Recently the president of Guatemala received a list of 12 names of judges and attorneys that are involved in the fight against organized crime and to which the mafia had already put a Price on their heads. The president called his minister of government, who valued the situation, and a few days later declared to the press: “The estate doesn’t have the capacity

In the case of Guatemala, it’s a country with such a weak economy where government can’t attend to all the social demands and the fulfillment of these in several communities, so its passing to the hands of organized crime, who are building schools, health dispensaries and give jobs to countrymen in order to gain the acceptance and sympathy, and also to be able to laundry money that is coming from drugtraficking. But, if Central America is becoming an important step for drugs into the United States, that country also has a high grade of responsibility, especially because it’s the buyer of 85% of the drugs that are parting from the region in airplanes or in the back of containers. It’s also responsible that the makers of weapons in the U.S. are producing armament that every time becomes more sophisticated of military traits for

Another action that has to be set in each country of the region where criminal organizations are already filtered in public and private structures, is top urge the police force and its justice systems, with the purpose of creating an environment of trust with the population, because at the present moment, the police causes fear and its preferred not to tell on crimes or sometimes to take justice into one’s own hands, like in the case of Guatemala, where 98% of crimes go unpunished or are subject of lynching. On the other hand, with the purpose of avoiding expansion of drugtraficking, some political analyst and organizations of civil society in the different countries of the region, consider the legalization of drugs as a radical measure and with rules, stating that, it would lead society to learn to live with drugs, like it has done with substances like alcohol and Tabaco.

One of the factors that makes it complex to face this criminal organizations, is that they are already filtered in public and private structures in each country of the region, whose governments have recognized being weak and it is because of it that the countries in Central America, Mexico, Colombia and the United States, recently made in Guatemala “The international conference of support to the strategy of Central American security, with the hope that the international cooperation will finance this regional efforts to fight crime, which plan has a cost of 900 million dollars.

To Guatemala, September 11th will be a very important day, and this is because the Presidential Elections 2011 are celebrated. This is an event that happen every 4 years and where we elect the maximum government authority. In this elections many will go to vote, or is what we have in mind, are many the candidates for the presidency, between them are Eduardo Suger, presidential candidate for the political party CREO (Compromise, Renovation and Order); Otto Pérez Molina, presidential candidate for the political party PATRIOTA with its slogan “Urges strong hand”; also search the presidential election on 2011, Harold Caballeros, candidate for the political party VIVA (Vision with values); Manuel Baldizón presidential candidate for the political party LIDER, Juan Gutiérrez presidential candidate for the political party PAN; among others. The Guatemala will elect the person that not only will represent us to national and international level, but also will have in his/her hands the power to guide adequate political strategies to lead the country. THE VOTE IMPORTANCE

Is time to be conscious; of our vote depends not only our future, but the future of our family and friends. Before you emit your vote do it in a conscious way, for a person who knows what he/she does, for someone with experience and above all someone who knows how to lead us, some that has independence and above all the solution to all the injustices that exist in our country. That’s why the next September 11th we will vote with conscience, because of our vote depend the future of everyone. Vote in the election 2011.

Politic and

That's why I encourage you to make a conscious vote, without being carried away by surveys or comments; a conscious vote is to know who is the best candidate to lead the country and not with archaic ideas or trying to pursue policies that led us to crises in earlier times.

Many campaigns have made this question. Being the women the half of the electoral population of the country, is evident that their electoral weigh is significant. We have to remember that in our country, in difference with others, the voting tables are not differenced by gender, which does not allow knowing the results of the election of men and women in a separate way. But that’s why I ask, for whom would you vote if elections were held tomorrow? Do you already know if your presidential candidate is the ideal?

Women constitute half of the world population, they have they have been entering the public world, entering productive work, community service and more slowly, into politics. The absence of women in popular elections is because of cultural factors as because of the own dynamic of political groups. To this situation we have to add the lack of education in schools, the judgments, marginalization and the fear of political career. These days in Guatemalabecause of the election process, the participation of women is being stimulated, giving them importance as a voice that has national spaces. Women have an important roll, it has been observed that they have a bigger particiation in politics, this means; the right to vote, be elected and to have spaces in which they express themselves. Nevertheless, the participation of women in elections in Guatemala traditionally has been much smaller than men’s, now it has been getting a bigger roll, extending itself to social spheres. In the last election years, the vote of the Guatemalan women has had a small presence in the urns, but this year it had 51% in the enrollment process to vote, that is equivalent in 3 million 720 thousand, a figure that

WOMEN WITH VOTE, BUT‌

The election process of 2011 in Guatemala will set precedents in favor of women; therefore it’s them who lead the election process in terms of voters, also its women who present a bigger percentage to aspire to popular places in government, in comparison to other years. The vote of Guatemalan women will be decisive in the coming elections; also, it shows that women have an interest in political issues. A tendency that has prevaled in several countries in Latin America, and now it’s showing in Guatemala. The participation of women has increased itself in the country, in the current election process its common for them to aspire to be president or vice-president of the republic, it’s a historical fact in which women aspiring to positions show that advancement in relation to the participation. But, still there is still the doubt in how the female voter will react with this women aspiring to positions in government. Space has not been equal for women in politics, but they are in a rise in the political life, in the search for a position in the political light.

A PIECE OF SUBSISTENCE…

Here in the city or in urban places, we are worried sometimes for superfluous things; well, the ones who have a work and can cover our basic needs. Because the city is not free of this extreme poverty, that affects those who live in this sacred land. I must admit that is not often to me think how lucky I am and the grateful that I must be because I count with the means to procure a subsistence.

If the education provides possibilities to man and woman, to the joy of life, to the reach of their objectives, to their own realization, this is possible in the mark of the culture that is constituted permanently. This suggests that culture is an expression of the human being itself, this particular set of experiences, typical of men and women: like falling in love, like the ceremony of marriage, how they are related and constitute a family. During the work meeting that you had the whole day, your ideas and comments didn’t were very assertive, therefore, the calls of attention to your labor actions were constantly and you felt frustrated and mad, when you arrive at home, your son approaches to you insistently to play with you for a short time; before you emit some restriction instruction to your son, you must reflect making the question to yourself that if your son in some moment has the guilt got the bad work day that you lived through, and that will depend of you attitude the strengthening or fading of the relationship with him, so you decide to play a short time with him and forget everything about the work troubles; at evening and after watch many programs on the television you think and reflect about the way you act with your son and feel a great satisfaction for your role as father and your commitment to strengthen your relationship with the family. At the end the morning will be a good day to search solutions to the work troubles…..

By: Larry NG La nutrigenómica es la ciencia que estudia como los The nutrigenomic is the science that studies how the components of the diet can affect the regulation of the expression of genes. The food that we ingest in diet not only provide us nutrients to a better physiological function, but also those nutrients can “turn on” and “Turn off” specifics genes.

On that sense is the nutrigenomic try to provide tools to understand these biological processes. Due to a big amount of pathologies have been associated to a bad function of one or many genes, this science try to understand the

relationship that exist between the nutrients and certain diseases like, the obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer and Parkinson.

Gene Expression – How do genes to “Turn on” and “Turn off”? To understand the regulation of the gene expression is necessary to remember that the genetic material or deoxyribonucleic acid, commonly called DNA, is in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells which are formed by a membrane composed by lipids and proteins, which keeps the cellular components within the cell. This cellular compartment, delimited by a porous membrane, where we found not just DNA but also ribonucleic acid or RNA and specific proteins that houses the cell organelles that perform most of the cell's

NUTRIGENOMIC - NUTRIGENETIC

Nutrients – Regulation of gene expression The advances in molecular biology technics open a new stage in the Medicine Area as well as in Nutrition. Today, nutritional genomics study the relations between the genes and the nutrients. Particularly, the nutrigenomic try to understand the influence that has the “try to understand nutrients in the regulation of the influence that genes expression, while the has the nutrients in nutrigenetic study how the individual genetic variants the regulation of condition the clinical answer in genes expression” front of nutrients.

Gene – Nutrient Interaction (Nutritional Genomic) The components of diet may alter the genomic expression acting like union element to specifics proteins that favor the synthesis of certain receptors, like fatty acids, and likewise may alter metabolic routes, altering the concentration of substrates or intermediaries.

The diet components can also directly affect the transduction routes of signals, like the green tea for its polyphenols contain and the rice that inhibit the growth factor. Therefore, the fact

metabolic reactions. A deregulation of this so complex mechanism may lead to alter the process called Cellular Cycle, where the cells first duplicate their genetic content and then divided. When this process is not controlled the cells begin to divide indiscriminately forming aberrant cells with the consequent formation of tumors.

Nutrigenomic The principles of Nutrigenomic suggest that the diet components act direct or indirectly over the regulation of genes expression. At the same time, the diet can be not just a risk factor, but can play a role in the beginning, incidence and/or progression of a disease in some individuals and under certain circumstances. Due to the genetic variability that exists between the individuals, the degree to which diet influence on health and disease may depend on individual genetic constitution. Any dietetic intervention based in the knowledge of individual nutritional needs, the nutritional state and genotype will be useful to prevent, mitigate or cure chronic diseases. Nutrigenetic

Try to understand how the genetic variations or polymorphisms of each individual are capable to consider a clinical answer in front of nutrients. The nutrigenetic offers the possibility of personalize the nutrition according with the genetic constitution of the consumers, having in count the knowledge of genetic variants that affects the nutrients metabolism and the nutrients targets. Genetic Variations – Disease Recent evidences show interactions between genotypenutrients, determine that individual genetic variations in human populations may affect the efficacy of medications and severity of undesirables effects. It is in that sense that

that some diet components play a key role in the regulation of genetic expression is out of questions. The important to note is that the genes regulated by diet may be involved in the beginning, progression and severity of diseases.

The individual genetic variations may alter the way in which the nutrients are assimilated, metabolized, stored or excreted by the organism. Due to the above mentioned is that nutrigenomic and

nutrigenetic progress will be linked to the utilization of personalized diets to retard the beginning as well as the progression of diseases and at the same time optimize the maintenance of human health.. “personalized medicine” is extending to the field of nutrition. The nutrients alter the molecular process such as the DNA structure, the genetic expression, and the metabolism, and each one at the same time may alter the beginning, develop or progression of diseases.

It was almost a year ago when my experience as a SPOR SOUTH-SOUTH participant took place in my life. However, in this article I do not want to focus on everything that was this experience was about, I rather focus in the coming back part of it. I remember when I first entered my house after 5 months out, I had a feeling of being in a dream, because I was in that house that just dreamed about, since i didn’t take pictures of her with me. I felt like I was seeing everything for the first time, I remember one of my first thoughts of surprise, was "stepping stairs of a house to a second floor, what a luxury, and we take it for granted." I looked around, trying to find that Ileana who once lived there, but this Ileana would never come back. The trip changed me, I like to think it was for good, the first few weeks I felt watched

THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY

While to many people, this may seem somewhat uncomfortable, sincerely, is something that I miss, and also that saves much water as the bath is measured by the one bucket you carry to bathe. In the case of my African family, we filled several buckets with water and put them under the kitchen sink so you could go an take a bucket, either for bathing, washing clothes or the toilet.

Having been in Tanzania definitely changed my life and in every aspect of it, which I like because it tells me that I really benefit from the experience. ¿Were there things I would have liked to do and did not? Of course I do, however, God willing, within a few years I will return to my African home and hopefully not with empty hands, because what this family gave me during my stay, it is something that money cannot buy; However I hope that it’ll help them achieve the dreams that they shared with me. by my family, as if waiting for something that didn’t occur, a conduct, or perhaps even the fact of having me back with them. I remember my friends and family even joked about my preview style of bathing, since I had spent four months bathing "to basin" style, as we Guatemalans say, this meant the fact draw water from a bucket using a basin to bathe.

One of the biggest issues that has changed in my life is to appreciate the beauty in the simplicity of life, being able to live in Mwanga that time, made me see how far we have allowed our society to be contaminated with technology , this does not mean that technology is bad, but any excess is bad, and we add the misuse of it, we cannot be in awe at the coolness that has grown up among humans, as for example, send an email instead of calling that person we call a friend or family, or simply going to the door of his or her house and spending time with him or her having direct contact. Another aspect that was very much enjoyable at my African home, was the selfsustainability, during my stay we planted two trees, an avocado and a papaya that eventually will provide to my family food, as they do now with the chicken house, which not only provides them with eggs, but also meat when a special guests comes to visit.

opening a guest house specifically for teachers in different schools, and thereby ensure that schools having teachers who should not be paying excessive rent for living in Mwanga.

This allowed me to be able to learn to live in the simplicity of life, appreciate the beauty of it, live it, apply it, teach it to others. A major factor that was a big support to me, was to write in my blog; this helped me to organize many of the ideas and thoughts I had in my mind, of the experiences that happened around me because I must admit that acclimatize to another culture is not an easy thing to do, but with the right attitude and your mind focused on all that the experience can give you ... it can represent a change in your life.

Ancestral voices that tell about The existence of a hidden city under a firm lake Villagers with their tradition feed Three volcanoes that Eden shows Reserve buried by tears of fire That a furious giant shed, Legends related by souls That not even time disappeared. Angels rest in the surface That surprised by God Now escape over the bulk surface And the wind lifts their voice. A shipwreck colored day from a far follows his beloved, a boat that in silence paints Soft waves with the brush of its soul Resonant peace of calm, Sentinels that guard you jealously Therefore, the sun over you makes its bed While the moon looks from the corner of its eye
