VB-76 is a mysterious Russian shortwave radio broadcasting station that has been transmitting a strange signal 24/7 since the early 80s. Its original location has been narrowed down to somewhere within the grounds of a mini-military city near the village of Povarobo near Moscow, but may have moved since. It generally emitts a series of creepy beeps and buzzes but every few weeks or so it switches to a series of coded numbers and names.

he signal has been listened to by shortwave radio enthusiasts for many years. More recently tech entrepreneur Andrus Aaslaid has been relaying the broadcast online and has had hundreds of thousands of listeners. Through August and September 2010 the signal went haywire, first producing a series of knocks & shuffles. It then began to air snippets of an orchestral song from the ballet Swan Lake. On Sept 7th the same year a male voice announced the renaming of the station to MDZhB and at the same time released a completely new set of names and numbers.

he purpose of the station has been speculated on by all sorts of people, from shortwave experts to former military officials. Although never officially being confirmed, popular opinion suggests that the station is used to relay encoded commands to Russian spies or military personnel. Another, much more harrowing possibility has been suggested; that the signal is in place so that in the event of a Nuclear attack from the USA (and therefore the demise of the broadcast), the Russian military would know to launch a their own nuclear counter attack.
