The event was compered by the wonderful Daphne Skinnard from BBC Radio Cornwall, who brought her charm and wit to the stage. As the winners were announced across eight categories, the room was filled with anticipation and applause. This year, the prestigious title of “Cornwall’s Farmer of the Year 2023,” sponsored by Stephens Scown Solicitors, was awarded to the Richards family of J H Richards & Sons (Richards of Cornwall Farm Shop). A heartfelt congratulations to the entire team, both front of house and behind the scenes. This award is a testament to their hard work and unwavering commitment to their business. One of the highlights of the evening was the auction, expertly hosted by Bridget Whell, the NFU Cornwall Chair. With her infectious energy and quick wit, Bridget helped raise over £2,000 through the auction, with a total of over £5,000 raised for the farming charity. This incredible amount of money will directly support British farmers in need, such as Sarah and James Hoskings, who received housing assistance after James fell ill with sepsis. It’s heartwarming to see the farming community come together to support one another in times of need.

The awards themselves showcased an exceptional lineup of nominees, each deserving of recognition for their contributions to the industry. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up in each category, including the Richards family for their win in the Best Commercial Farmer category. Other notable winners include Georgina Roberts of Hunrosa, Trye Farm, who took home the title of Best Woman in Agriculture, and the Semmens family of J R Semmens & Sons, who were crowned Best Mixed Farmer. The sponsors played a crucial role in making the awards a success, and their support is greatly appreciated. Without their generosity, this extraordinary celebration of British farming would not have been possible. The Addington Fund extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors, as well as the guests who attended the event and contributed to the auction and prize draw. The Cornwall Farm Business Awards 2023 was a night to remember, filled with joy, pride, and a true sense of unity within the Cornish farming community. It showcased the incredible talent, dedication, and innovation that exists within the industry. As we celebrate the winners and their achievements, let us also remember to support and uplift all farmers who work tirelessly to provide us with the food we enjoy every day.

Keeping it in

THE FAMILY Ever thought - ‘wow, wouldn’t it be great to run a business with my family? We could work the hours we want, build our dream empire from our living room, and be our own bosses.

Or does the idea fill you with absolute dread? We spoke to three members of the Made in Devon scheme about their experiences and what advice they have for those embarking on - or already enjoying this brave and exciting journey.

My husband Tim and I co-founded BarBuoy Cocktails together in 2020. Since then, we’ve given up our day jobs and run the business together full time.

1. Do you have different roles within the business? How did you decide on those? It’s always been pretty clear who does what and who has which skillset for each element of the business. Tim is technically the ‘BarBuoy’ with a background in the drinks industry and events. He created our cocktail menu and was very clear on the ingredients he wanted to use and how he wanted to mix them. He also has great attention to detail for the brand and its execution. But most importantly, underneath his creativity, he weirdly has a love of numbers and spreadsheets which is essential for cash flow. I pick up a lot of everything else: customer orders, marketing, admin, health & safety, HR (we now have two employees) …the list is endless in a small business but the variety keeps it fun and fresh.

2. What advice do you have for running a business with your partner/ family member? RIA BALL WORKS WITH HER HUSBAND TIM - Barbuoy Cocktails

It feels impossible to not talk about work when we’re at home. And it’s often essential for being prepared for the next day. I used to think we had to try and leave everything BarBuoy-related at the front door but now I don’t actually think it matters to have the odd work chat in the kitchen. In fact, some of our best ideas have come from a conversation we’ve had at home or on the beach away from our desks. We’re also quite partial to an ‘end of the week’ Margarita together on a Friday evening and it’s a great moment to reflect on what went well and what didn’t. Thankfully there’s no danger of letting it take over everything though as we have two children with pretty busy social lives themselves so there are plenty of topics of conversation in the house that involve very different subjects to cocktails! I would say though that the hardest part of us working together is both being in the same place at the same time when it’s out of school hours. When we’re invited to an evening event or want to exhibit at a trade show or food festival that involves an overnight stay, my first thought is always ‘Who will help with the kids.’ We are both very grateful to some key friends and family who step in to have our backs. That said, some of the events we’ve been lucky enough to attend together through work have been really special and a great excuse for a ‘date night.’

3. Would you recommend it? I know it wouldn’t be for everyone, but if you are a couple that can work together, I really would recommend it. It’s like having the ultimate business partner because everything you’re working towards in each aspect of your life is aligned.

4. Anything else?

madeindevon.org.uk

If I was brutally honest, I’d like Tim’s appetite to be more like mine. When it comes to lunchtime, I always seem to get hungry first, so I go and make something / buy something and I feel obliged to offer to get Tim something too (and he always accepts!). I think if he was a work colleague that I didn’t live with I’d be more likely to leave him to sort himself out! He just seems to have an ability to go until 2 or 3pm without breaking whereas from midday onwards I’m on borrowed time before I get hangry!

www.powderkegbeer.co.uk My husband John and I started Powderkeg Brewery in 2014 and have run it together ever since.

1. Do you have different roles within the business? How did you decide on those? Very much so. John was already a brewer and in the industry — he wrote the business plan while I was working freelance to support the family and looking after our two small children. So naturally he took on the brewing and the facilities management and is very much the business brain. I have juggled the branding, art direction, marketing and PR, as well as keeping accounts and doing some HR and customer management. We tend to work together on strategy as it’s crucial to bounce things off each other.

2. What advice do you have for running a business with your partner/ family member? It works for us because we are not argumentative people, we get along well. If you have a fiery relationship it’s probably not for you, as the business could suffer, and any staff would end up in the middle of it. I enjoy the pride our kids take in the business – they love to wear the branded hoodies and are always telling their teachers they should be drinking Powderkeg!

3. Would you recommend it? Yes and no. It’s amazing having a shared vision and creating that together. When we won our first couple of big awards it felt so exhilarating, after all that hard work. But when you add that on top of having a family together, it can be a real stretch to manage everything. It can be hard not to talk shop at home – because generally, you both find it really interesting. And being together all day, every day, means you don’t get that enjoyment from meeting at dinner to ask about each other’s day – you already know everything that happened! That’s why at the beginning of the year I accepted a part-time Arts Manager role at Exmouth Town Council (the kind of job I was in before). The business had reached a point where we had a great team so I could cut back my hours there, and it’s refreshing to have my other line of work back up again but still be involved in Powderkeg. I guess the answer is that balance is key, and business and family needs change over time so you have to constantly adapt.

www.fireworkglassstudio.co.uk We are a very small family: Izach is the Glass Blower and Steve and I are his business partners and general dogsbodies! Shaka, Izach’s real dog is the face of the business and our mascot. We are a new business, just 10 months in operation.

1. Do you have different roles within the business? How did you decide on those? Izach is the glass artist, so he has all the hard work of creating and making the blown glass and sculpted pieces. All the rest, the general admin, marketing, sales, invoicing etc., are my responsibility along with learning to be Izach’s studio assistant. Steve is the reliable postie - making regular trips to the post office! After many years in a big corporation, it was obvious for me to handle the business side, while Steve does all of the running around.

2. What advice do you have for running a business with your partner/ family member? For Steve and I, it’s a real joy to be able to not only see Izach at work, but also to help out as much as possible. After spending several years in the US, it was Covid that brought Izach back to the UK and lockdown that spurred us into setting up the studio in the garden. So, for mum and dad, having our son home is great. For Izach I’m sure working with parents daily brings its own special frustrations! He’s the boss and isn’t shy in letting us know how he wants things run - the tables have truly turned when it comes to who’s telling who what to do! We are all learning new skills, it’s the first time we have run our own business and definitely the first time to be a glass blower’s assistant for me - a world away from my former office job!

3. Would you recommend it? After nearly a year, in the most difficult operating environment (cost of living crisis, fuel prices), we are still here and having fun. We are building a good reputation, are seeing repeat customers, and receiving positive feedback, which makes it all worthwhile. It’s hard work, but spending this extra time together is a bonus we didn’t expect when we spent so long apart in different countries.

4. Any other advice? Building a new business is not a sprint - it’s a marathon with an obstacle course thrown in. It takes all of us to keep it going and to keep a positive frame of mind that we will be successful in the long run.

Members of Made in Devon are all independent, Devon-based businesses, so naturally, many are family-run. One of the huge benefits of being part of the scheme is that it provides peace of mind that things are being done right - and no doubt saves a few arguments around the breakfast / boardroom table. All applicants go through a valuable audit process which includes advice from a government-employed Trading Standards Officer to help a business ensure it is legally compliant. They can answer questions about everything from sector-specific legislation to customer complaints and insurance. Ongoing access to this advice is free, along with other benefits including promotional opportunities and membership of a network of like-minded businesses. Made in Devon is part of the national Buy With Confidence scheme which gives consumers the reassurance they are buying from local, legal, and honest companies and gives businesses an accreditation that they are Trading Standards Approved. www.madeindevon.org.uk

There are a myriad of footpaths and green lanes around Woolsery village to explore. Just a few miles away, and within walking distance for seasoned hikers, the South West Coast Path, within the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers a breathtaking landscape of wild coastal cliffs, spectacular waterfalls, rocky coves, sand dunes, beaches, wooded combes and valleys with sheltering villages. There are variety of walks to choose from, and guests can customise their walking itinerary to suit their preferences and fitness levels. A typical break might be as follows: Day 1: Woolsery Familiarise yourself with the village of Woolsery, and North Devon, by completing 2 walks - one before lunch at The Farmers Arms, and one after. These walks vary in length, between 1 mile and 4.5 miles. Day 2: Bucks Mill Exploration Embark on the walk from Bucks Mill. The start point is ten minutes from The Collective at Woolsery. About The Collective at Woolsery The Collective at Woolsery is an extraordinary destination in the wild and unspoilt countryside of North Devon where luxury accommodation and exceptional dining intertwine. It was created by Michael and Xochi Birch out of their genuine love and connection to Woolsery, the ancestral home of Michael Birch. Nestled in remote countryside that’s off the beaten track, and far removed from Westcountry hotspots, this hidden gem also offers seven stunning places to stay, each exquisitely designed where you can indulge in whimsical eccentricities, with every detail reflecting a deep connection to the village’s history and heritage. ‘In the South West and across the rest of the UK, the dining scene is evolving; there’s no question about it,’ says Michael, a leading light on the South West food scene who owns Michelin-starred Lympstone Manor in Devon, The Cove at Maenporth in Cornwall, and Mickeys Beach in Exmouth. ‘Browse the pages of the Trencherman’s Guide edition 31 and you’ll find, more than ever before, the diverse ways that chefs and restaurateurs are extending their core business to incorporate a variety of dining experiences that don’t compromise on quality. ‘From wood-fired pizzas served on hotel terraces to family-friendly beach bars and fish shacks in pub gardens, authentic South West dining experiences are reaching an even greater audience, which is fantastic for everyone – including the region’s food and drink producers. The ceremony of multi-course meals and starched linen still holds huge appeal to those chasing a real sense of occasion – but it’s time to expand our perspective on the definition of the most exquisite dining experiences.’ The annual epicurean bible for the region launched its latest edition on Monday September 25 at Ugly Butterfly by Adam Handling in Carbis Bay with a champagne reception and exquisite four-course lunch. This year’s guide, which covers the entire South West region from Land’s End to the furthest reaches of Dorset and the Cotswolds, features 106 restaurants that have surpassed the strict Trencherman’s entry criteria. This year’s members range from formal restaurants to dining pubs, bistros and bottle shops.

At the helm of the guide is new editor Abi Manning, who describes it as ‘a true celebration of the best places to eat in the South West – in their many guises. The concept of fine dining isn’t dead, but there’s certainly a movement towards a more casual restaurant experience, as shown in the guide. This is the direction the industry is now taking – as a result of food and energy prices putting pressure on restaurants, as well as the cost-of-living crisis for consumers. However, quality is still key and we believe a casual meal using hyper-local ingredients cooked extremely well is equally as valid as a multi-course tasting menu. Abi points to the 25 new additions to the guide: ‘It’s evidence of the talent that continues to flourish in this food-rich corner of the UK,’ she says. ‘The guide – and the independent dining scene – is moving into a new era. We’re incredibly lucky that we have such an abundance of incredible chefs paving the way, and along with their teams are finding innovative methods to use the rich produce of our land and sea to create memorable dining experiences.’ The guide launched in style at the event in north Cornwall, attended by Trencherman’s members and guide partners Dole, The Eco Laundry, PKF Francis Clark, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, Navas Drinks and Trevethan Cornish Craft Distillery. Event suppliers included Yallah Coffee, Matthew Stevens Cornish Fish, Philip Warren Butchers and Otter Valley Farms. A sumptuous four-course banquet was created by four chefs who appear among its pages: Ugly Butterfly chef-patron Adam Handling (and this year’s Champion of Champions on Great British Menu), Guy Owen of The St Enodoc Hotel in Cornwall, Harriet Mansell of Robin Wylde in Dorset and Nicholas Balfe of HOLM in Somerset. Each chef sought to highlight the bountiful produce of the South West, with ingredients including Somerset lamb, Cornish duck, Dorset dandelion root and Cornish seaberry. Famed as some of the best in the world, Luscombe sources Sicilian oranges and lemons from farmers growing them in Sicily’s rich soils. Having spent nine years living in Sicily, Luscombe’s founder Gabriel knows the long days of glorious sunshine give the fruit an intense sweetness to balance their natural acidity. At their home in Devon, Luscombe then expertly blends the juices with their own source of Dartmoor spring water, bringing a rounded depth to the zesty infusion of fresh citrus. Bursting with flavour and leaving the palate feeling refreshed, Sicilian Citrus Crush is exquisite paired with seafood, calamari, Dublin Bay prawns, shellfish, smoked salmon and egg dishes such as scrambled egg, frittata and omelette. Originally created in honour of Gabriel’s grandmother’s favourite non-alcoholic tipple of orange juice and bitter lemon, Sicilian Citrus Crush is extremely versatile. Simply serve chilled over ice and enjoy, mix with your favourite premium spirit or use to elevate cocktails. Royal Warrant Holder, Luscombe’s Sicilian Citrus Crush can be purchased from luscombe.co.uk in single serving bottles (12x27cl bottles, £26.50) or sharing bottles (6x74cl, £27.40). At Visit South Devon, our unwavering commitment to sustainability fuels our desire to make a positive impact on our local community and the environment. With this objective in mind, we initiated a beach cleanup event. We sought the expertise of The 2 Minute Foundation to help with this event, an exceptional charity dedicated to the idea that even two minutes of effort can bring about significant change.

Our beach clean took place on a warm September day at Blackpool Sands Beach, nestled near the picturesque maritime town of Dartmouth. At first glance, the beach appeared relatively free of litter. However, it wasn’t until we actively started searching that we discovered a surprising amount of debris. Among the items we found were coffee cups, sugar sachets, tin foil, cigarette butts, and crisp packets, but the primary culprits were minuscule pieces of waste known as micro-plastics, likely carried onto the beach from the sea. Interestingly, we also stumbled upon some more unusual items, including underwear, plastic toy parts, and cable ties—illustrating the diverse range of objects that can end up on the beach, either discarded by individuals or washed ashore by the tide. We were fortunate to have the support of several outstanding local businesses that sponsored our event, including Salcombe Brewery, RFS Marketing, Stagecoach, Stoke Lodge Hotel, Cofton Holiday Park, and Sea Kayak Devon. Additionally, a significant number of community members joined us, driven by a shared commitment to making a positive impact.

Following our beach clean, we invited our event sponsors to participate in a sustainability workshop hosted by The 2 Minute Foundation at Kendricks Restaurant in Stoke Fleming, part of the Leonards Cove family. During this enlightening session, we gained valuable insights and practical tips for leading more environmentally conscious lives. The workshop commenced with a thought-provoking discussion about the numerous plastic-based items we use in our daily routines, such as hairbrushes, showers, and car keys. It was eye-opening to realize the extent of our plastic consumption. While some items like cars or phone chargers are difficult to eliminate entirely, there are undoubtedly numerous ways to reduce our everyday plastic usage. Here are some fascinating facts we learned from The 2 Minute Foundation: •

Beach cleans trigger the release of all four of your happy hormones: serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin.

The misconception that plastic takes hundreds of years to break down is debunked. In reality, plastic never truly decomposes. Instead, it breaks down into smaller particles called micro and nano-plastics, persistently finding their way into our water, food, and even the air we breathe - a concerning revelation.

Plastic production and pollution rank as the leading cause of global warming, followed by agricultural farming and transport.

Recovering all the plastic currently in existence would obviate the need to produce new “virgin” plastics.

45

M A G A Z I N E

If possible, take a moment to reflect on the extent of plastic items in your own home. Then, dedicate a mere two minutes to brainstorm ways to replace these items with more eco-friendly alternatives—a philosophy closely aligned with the core values of the 2 Minute Foundation, where small efforts can catalyze profound change. Simple adjustments, such as switching from a plastic toothbrush to a bamboo one or preparing your own lunch for work rather than buying single-use meal deals, can make a substantial impact. For business owners, consider implementing initiatives that encourage your employees to adopt greener practices. Initiatives like cycle-towork programs, carpooling schemes, or providing reusable coffee cups and water bottles can significantly reduce the consumption of singleuse items among your staff. The workshops we attended prompted profound self-reflection, both personally and within our business operations.

If you’re interested in participating in a beach clean, The 2 Minute Foundation has established litter-picking stations at numerous beaches, green spaces, and towns in South Devon and beyond. We invite you to join us in taking this small step toward helping our planet. And, remember to tag @VisitSouthDevon in any beach clean photos you share on Facebook, Twitter (X), or Instagram!

Loving Your

Stepchildren Why loving your stepchildren differently is perfectly normal Being a step mum is a beautiful yet complex journey, filled with unique challenges and rewards. As someone who has experienced both sides of the stepfamily dynamic, as a stepchild and now as a step mum, I’ve come to understand that the love we feel in blended families is not a one size fits all emotion. It’s a complex, evolving, and deeply personal experience.

In a world where celebrities might claim to love their stepchildren as much as their biological ones, let’s be real, it’s rarely like that. This doesn’t mean you don’t love the. It simply means your love is different, just like your family set up. I will always be there for my stepchildren, laugh with them, cry with them, and celebrate their milestones. But I also recognise that my own children grew inside me, and my husband and I have had the privilege of parenting them in a way we wanted. Stepchildren have had their own journey with their biological parents. I support mums, especially those navigating the complexities of blended families. As an Empowerment Mentor for burnt out mums, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles and triumphs that come with being a step mum. It’s a role that requires resilience, understanding, and the acknowledgment that love takes different forms within a blended family. So, to all the step mums out there navigating blended families, remember this; your love is special, true, and valid just the way it is. Embrace the uniqueness of your family and cherish the moments you create together. Perfection isn’t the norm. Your love, in all its forms, is a powerful force that shapes the beautiful tapestry of your blended family. Kirsty Parsons Empowerment Mentor Peridot Coaching www.peridotcoaching.co.uk

We live in a world of high bills, fast paced life, kids, holidays, social media pressure, career positioning and a whole host of other things. The question is,

“How is the brain supposed to cope with it all?” Did you know that in the UK, mental ill health is the single largest cause of disability, ahead of cancer and even cardiovascular disease? This tells me that the brain is just simply not coping with it all. Life is just too much at times. There are many techniques to de-stress and calm the mind and in the last decade there has been a surge of tools that have been made available to help people. With the cost of living crisis, I have always wanted to provide products that not only give joy and increase mental wellbeing, I have always wanted to provide something that was either free or low cost. Zen Seeta is my hobby business in which I create unique hand drawn adult colouring books, which are available on Amazon. I ensure that I talk about the scientific data behind adult colouring for mental wellness. Every human has two Amygdala within the brain and colouring has been shown to reduce the activity of these two almond shaped nodules. These small structures are the fear centre of your brain and so it is important to find ways to reduce their activity. A study in America once showed that 13 minutes of adult colouring can induce a state of meditation.

Consequently many women feel very concerned, feel they have few choices but to medicate when they may prefer not to, and very often just dread it. Our experience is this is not the case. Yes it is a time of change, but it is a natural process that you can positively influence by taking important steps, allowing you to pass through the menopause with ease. It’s also worth remembering that 25% of women have no symptoms at all during this time.

PLANNING The menopause is a transition from one normal healthy state to another normal healthy. Knowing yourself and your hormones can make this transition go more smoothly In general the more level and healthy your hormones are, the better you will transition through menopause. If you are struggling with difficult, painful or irregular periods it is a good idea to try to sort these out as the chaotic nature of hormones at menopause can make this a more difficult time than is necessary. The key to passing easily through this time of change is hormonal balance. The body is changing the way it balances and can have chaotic days or periods of time, but it is always trying to achieve balance. Spotting early symptoms and getting them balanced will help things run smoothly. It is not unusual for women to experience menopause like their maternal relatives. So find out the experience of your mother, aunts, sisters, cousins – what kind of age, what symptoms and how long they took to pass through this stage is useful knowledge to have. You can then be on the look out for early indications. There are many natural approaches to help balancing hormones, which some people prefer to try first. These include herbal supplements, vitamin and mineral supplements, homeopathy, acupuncture, Bush flower remedies and diet among other things. Doing some research into what you prefer, what may have worked for you in the past, other people’s thoughts and views is a good idea. It is better not to wait until a “crisis” of melting hot flushes or anxiety when it is harder to spend time and energy trying to sort it. Information is power. SYMPTOMS Contrary to popular belief, the menstrual bleed is often one of the later symptoms. Mental and emotional changes may be early symptoms which in a busy life can be harder to spot. These can include: Increased anxiety Depression or mood swings Increased PMS Foggy brain, memory not very sharp Exhaustion Later symptoms can be : Difficulty sleeping Hot flushes Change in bleed, which can increase dramatically Weight gain It is worth pursuing natural ways of addressing these as they will encourage the body to pass through the menopause, and the more balanced the hormones, the fewer the symptoms.

HRT HRT is usually given for a limited time and has both risks and benefits. Unexpected changes in health, such as a blood clot, will mean that HRT has to be withdrawn, and if you are reliant on this to relieve symptoms your menopause symptoms will return. Your body will still need to pass through menopause, and it won’t do this while the body is using HRT. One of Anne’s patient ‘s in her late 70s when taken off HRT, immediately had hot flushes again! Learning more about yourself and your body, what sort of alternative approaches work for you, and what dietary changes and supplements make you feel good, has a positive knock on impact for control of your longer term health. If you have chosen HRT as the best option for you, always have a Plan B to fall back on if you change your mind or something happens which means you are unable to take it. BONE HEALTH Many women worry about their bones becoming thin and brittle. Its true oestrogen has a protective effect on bones, but the good news is that adding weight bearing exercises really helps. By causing the muscles and tendons to pull on the bones stimulates the bone cell growth. Even if you aren’t a gym bunny you can do things that help, like walking. Balancing on one leg for a couple of minutes at a time – you can even do this while cleaning your teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil – also helps bone health. Yoga postures such as the “plank” or “warrior” or a sequence such as the “salute to the sun” are very useful. If you aren’t familiar with yoga there are many online classes Adding impact into weight bearing exercise has been shown to be even better. Jogging is also an option, although make sure you have correct shoes. Join a low cost running group for beginners if you are just thinking about starting out now. Bouncing on a mini trampoline at home is excellent for bones. If you like going to the gym, the use of dumbbells and multigyms increases weight impact to exercise ratio and help build healthy bones. The key thing with exercise is to pick something that you like doing and can incorporate into your life. Perhaps a sport that you previously enjoyed and that you can return to. Don’t set yourself up to fail. Contrary to popular belief we don’t always need calcium – our diet is calcium rich. The difficulty is absorbing calcium. Our bodies need Vitamin D to absorb calcium so a Vitamin D supplement is a good idea. Vitamin E, Vitamin K, magnesium and boron are also useful, and many companies sell this as a combination mix. FEAR OF CHANGE There is a famous saying “there is nothing to fear but fear itself”. There are a lot of negative stereotypes about ageing. Many women fear they are “losing themselves”. You have little choice about the fact that this is happening. However, you do actually have a lot of choice about how you approach the experience and thrive through it. There is a sense of clarity and purpose that comes with menopause as oestrogen changes. Hormonally, you return to the person you were before the veil of hormones descended. It’s like you are a child, but with 40 years experience! This can be an extremely creative time of life. It’s true, as oestrogen reduces it can make you less forgiving, but this can give rise to better decision making and more willingness to try new things for yourself. Alison took up belly-dancing, put on art exhibitions then started an MPhil research project on women entrepreneurs.

Menopause and professional women

Investing in present and future self Leading Through Another Type of Change - My Message is More Than Menopause it’s about professional women “Investing in their present and future self” keeping women in business. Writing in the first edition of Funky Magazine I shared my personal story about how I had to learn to lead through a new type of “Change” due to the “Clash of my Change & Career Curves” – my menopause. In this 4th edition I want to share with you how my message is more than menopause. My message is about professional women investing in their present and future self” as I learn to lead through another type of “change” after receiving the news I have myeloma, an incurable rare blood cancer. Yes I have another “M” word to manage alongside menopause.

REVIEWING MY BUSINESS AND BODY STRATEGY It was always the plan to take a step back after completing my bodybuilding show in April 2023 to review both my body and business strategy. My aim was to explore how I could further assist professional women with my Menopause Resilience System® while extending my teaching to professional men via my Andropause Resilience System™. This review took time as I worked with my team and my network to adapt our services to suit the evolving needs of professional women as 32% are still leaving their corporate careers or businesses due to their hormonal changes which is not acceptable. I also invested in my body by undergoing private blood work reviews to see how my body had recovered after my bodybuilding show. However the private blood work raised some concerns that required consultations with NHS professionals to understand why my hormones were so very low and why my red blood cells were abnormal. I want to share that both of these were not as a result of bodybuilding but were underlying existing conditions. SAYING NO TO ANTIDEPRESSANTS FOR A SECOND TIME The interesting part is that my GP wanted to prescribe antidepressants before looking at my private blood work! To say I was angry was an understatement as that was the same 13 years ago when I went to the GP after my “meltdown” that was early menopause and not “burnout” that was misdiagnosed as depression. After pushing back and saying no to antidepressants for a second time, I was given an NHS blood test and discussed the results and how I was truly feeling with a female doctor. She listened and understood, helping me with a solution for my hormones and sent me for further tests to investigate my red blood cells as she was concerned the abnormality was getting worse. Thank goodness she did, as it transpires that the abnormal red blood cells have given me another “M” word to deal with - Myeloma, a rare incurable blood cancer impacting my bones and kidneys. After a very stressful time having a biopsy and scan I was told that it is currently stage one. I am working with an amazing team both locally and in London on a treatment plan as my bone density and kidneys are actually holding up strong! My consultant said to me “you practise what you preach and what you preach works”.

I PRACTISE WHAT I PREACH AND WHAT I PREACH WORKS What I have “practised and preached” for the past 13 years is my Menopause Resilience System ®. The consultant team looking after me confirmed that my lifestyle, food, strength training and sleep have kept my immune systems, bones and kidneys strong as my body “deals” with the impact of the myeloma cells on my body. My Menopause Resilience System® is one balanced system that focuses on our physical, mental and emotional resilience focusing on the body, mind, relationships and taking ownership:

✓ Body | Feel Stronger • Food: Eat to perform for optimal performance as our body changes • Move: Movement to keep our changing body functioning and moving • Snooze: Sleep to repair and rejuvenate as our body changes

✓ Mind | Think Clearly • Calm: Managing our thoughts and keeping calm as our body changes • Clarity: Keeping focused with our intention and energy • Confidence: Building confidence so we can lead in a new way

✓ Relations | Manage Relationships • Me: Self Leadership and the relationship with ourselves • We: Group Leadership and the relationships with our family and friends • Thee: Enterprise Leadership and the relationships with our workplace and networks

✓ Leadership | Take Ownership • Vision: What is our True North - our purpose • Mission: What will we do to go North our outcome focused goals • Strategy: How will we go North - our own map with actions

MY UNEXPECTED OPPORTUNITY So this unexpected “opportunity” broadens the scope of my message way beyond menopause and hormonal changes. My message advocates that professional women invest in their present and future selves to manage not only their hormonal transitions but any unexpected situations they face like me. I want women to really understand their bodies and “push back” if they are not happy with the response from their healthcare providers and not accept antidepressants or a less stressful role as the default solution offered to midlife women. So, this isn’t a choice I would have made. But my lifestyle has saved my life making me even more passionate about professional women really investing in their own health like they do their business or career. It really is about consistently using the principles of food, move and snooze, building that muscle for life. My Summary Please own your blood work, understanding what the results are saying for both your hormones and overall health. If you don’t feel great, challenge your health care provider with your blood work and how you actually feel. Do not take antidepressants or “change your professional career” as the first answer. Find the confidence and tenacity to push back and say no I want you to help me understand what is going on with my body like I did for both my misdiagnosed early menopause and myeloma diagnosis. Use my Menopause Resilience System® focusing on your food, move (including strength training) and your snooze to invest in your present and future self building that strong body to deal with your hormonal changes and anything else that life throws at you. As professional women I want you to stay in business as the rate of women leaving their role due to a menopause is 32% and with a cancer diagnosis that increases to a staggering 58%! We must have both resilient bodies and resilient businesses or careers.

PERSONAL CLOSE So for me, it’s another “M” word, “Menopause Matters” and now “Myeloma Matters”. The current version of “Adelle” has definitely looked back and thanked her for investing in her future self. As I work with my consultant team to understand what the next 10 years look like for me dealing with myeloma, my focus still remains on empowering professional women to be smart, sassy and strong through change and growth. I will be back in the next edition talking about the importance of bone density. Until the next edition please invest in your present and future self. A Thought For Your Day... If you could do ANYTHING, what would you do? Take a moment and think about that… What would you be doing if you had infinite resources, and unlimited potential? Now, what if I told you that you already have everything you need to do that? You already have infinite potential, and the resources will arrive exactly when you need them. I can hear the scoffs and doubt from here! But let me explain… We are all more powerful than we realise, our minds simply aren’t tuned into our power! But when we learn how to tune into that power anything becomes possible. We can pursue our dreams. Reach the success that we want. Have the bank balance we want. Help the world in the way we want. Live the life we want to live.

How? The first step is to simply IMAGINE what it is that you want to do, have or be. Build a detailed image in your mind of what you want and really feel it. Use all of your senses and build an image of the things you want in your life. Get emotionally involved with the picture, focus on the happiness or pride you will be feeling when you reach that place. The second step is to BELIEVE that you can achieve it! The Wright brothers BELIEVED they could fly when everyone else told them they couldn’t. Edison BELIEVED he could create the lightbulb and he did after 10’000 failures. J.K. Rowling BELIEVED that her books would become household favourites and never stopped trying as she received rejection after rejection… Whatever you can see in your mind, you can create in the world. Ignore any thoughts that tell you why you can’t, focus on the FACT that you can!

Natural Healing & Holistic Therapies at Plymouth’s

Te Tao Chinese Medical Centre Are you looking for a natural and holistic approach to health and healing? Discover the ancient wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine at Te Tao Chinese Medical Centre, which offers the most comprehensive TCM services in Plymouth to support your journey to better health and help you achieve balance and well-being.

Fundamental concepts of Chinese medicine Yin & Yang 陰陽 In Chinese medicine, “yin” and “yang” are like two opposite but interconnected forces that describe the balance in our bodies and the world around us. Imagine yin as the cool, calm, and quiet side, while yang is the warm, active, and energetic side. These two forces are always present, and they exist in a delicate balance. Good health in Chinese medicine depends on keeping the yin and yang in harmony. When they are balanced, you feel well and full of energy. But when one becomes too strong or weak compared to the other, it can lead to health problems. For example, if you have too much yang, you might feel restless or agitated. On the other hand, if you have too much yin, you might feel tired or sluggish. Chinese medicine treatments, such as acupuncture and herbal remedies, aim to restore the balance between yin and yang in your body. So, yin and yang are like the dual forces of balance in Chinese medicine, helping to keep you healthy and in harmony. Qi 氣 “Qi” (pronounced like “chee”) is a vital energy or life force that flows through our bodies. Think of it like the energy that keeps everything in your body working smoothly, much like electricity powers your devices. Chinese medicine believes that good health depends on the balance and free flow of qi in your body. When qi is flowing smoothly, you feel healthy and full of energy. But if qi becomes blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to health problems or discomfort. Practices like acupuncture and herbal medicine in Chinese medicine aim to help balance and restore the flow of qi, promoting overall well-being. So, qi is like the invisible force that keeps your body in harmony, and Chinese medicine focuses on maintaining and restoring it for good health.

How does Chinese medicine solve health problems Chinese medicine treats illness and enhances health by focusing on the following two main principles: 1. Balancing Yin and Yang: Chinese medicine believes that good health means keeping the two forces of Yin and Yang in balance. When you’re sick, it often means there’s an imbalance. So, Chinese medicine uses treatments like acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary changes to bring yin and yang back into harmony. For example, if you’re too hot and restless (too much yang), they might use herbs to cool you down and restore balance. 2. Tonifying and Cultivating Qi: When your qi is weak or blocked, you can get sick or feel tired. Chinese medicine uses various methods, such as acupuncture, herbs, and exercises like Qigong, to tonify (strengthen) and cultivate (nurture) your qi. They might prescribe specific herbs or acupuncture points to boost your energy or remove blockages. So, in simple terms, Chinese medicine helps you get better and stay healthy by making sure yin and yang are balanced and by strengthening and nurturing your vital energy, qi. This balance and vitality are essential for overall well-being according to Chinese medicine.

Q A

Some female artists have been taken off the BBC Radio 1 playlists because they are over thirty. I was asked recently do I think there are some radio stations that are prejudiced against women when it comes to age and how ‘relevant’ they are seen as? Personally I haven’t experienced this as the radio support I’ve had worldwide has been amazing. I feel radio stations are under immense pressure to reach big audiences, and sometime decisions are made on RAJAR results to meet demographics and listener targets. That would affect who makes the playlist. It is a concern to hear that woman over thirty are being taken off, as some of the best artists we have are in that category and above and have been making worldwide hits for decades! I have been very lucky with worldwide airplay on thousands of stations now and its been amazing to see my last single grow organically as an independent artist especially in these challenging times as as a female artist!

Writing Avalon Legal... helping you a Will find the optimal solution

Were you aware that approximately 60% of the adult population of England and Wales do not have any provision for their loved ones on death and the majority of those who have not made a Will are in the 56+ age bracket.

86

E M P O W E R I N G W O M E N . H O S P I TA L I T Y . R E TA I L

M A G A Z I N E

The fundamental question is WHY? The laws surrounding Wills pre-date the modern legal system…even William Shakespeare left a Will, in which everyone know he left his wife the second-best bed and even before William Shakespeare’s death in April 1616 a Will could and would occasionally be written even in the most extreme circumstances. The most famous one in Devon is Childe the Hunter, legend has it that Childe was in a party hunting on the moor when they were caught in some changeable weather. Childe became separated from the main party and was lost. In order to save himself from dying of exposure, he killed his horse, disembowelled it and crept inside the warm carcass for shelter. He nevertheless froze to death, but before he died, he wrote a note to the effect that whoever should find him and bury him in their church should inherit his Plymstock estate. His body was found by the monks of Tavistock Abbey, who started to carry it back. However, they heard of a plot to ambush them by the people of Plymstock, at a bridge over the River Tavy. They took a detour and built a new bridge over the river, just outside Tavistock. After which they were successful in burying the body in the grounds of the Abbey and inherited the Plymstock estate. The current law regarding Wills and the disposal of one’s estate goes back to the Wills Act 1837, written during the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign, states in plain English that a person is free to give his or her wealth to anyone and that anyone may benefit from such wealth provided the provision is written and executed in accordance with the law. The majority of the Wills Act 1837 is current today as it was when first placed on the statute books and has only been amended four times in last 180 years, the last time in 1995.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME? …THE COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ARE: A. I am married and everything goes to my spouse – It is sad to say that unfortunately we are not immortal and cannot take our possessions with us, but why do I need a will, surely my family will get everything anyway. The law sets out clear rules what will happen to your Estate – property, personal possessions, and cash if you die without a Will. Passing away without a Will is known in legal terms as dying Intestate and the rules that govern the distribution of the Estate in such circumstances is known as the Law of Intestacy. Under the Administration of Estates Act 1925 the spouse and children do not automatically receive everything in the deceased’s Estate. Invariably the surviving spouse is treated harshly because the widow’s entitlement is limited to the sum of £250,000 plus personal effects and any accounts held in joint names, with limited interest in only half the balance which remains after that which may pass to any children. If there are no children, surviving siblings or parents then the surviving spouse or civil partner under the Guidelines of the Civil Partnership 2004, takes the sum of £250,000 and one half of the balance, with the other more remote relatives taking the other half. The surviving spouse or civil partner can only take the whole estate if there are no surviving children, siblings or parents. B. So why make a will? It is clear from recent government statistics and in conjunction with the Chancery Division of the High Court, Probate Registry that many of the population die each year without making a Will, creating much heartache and anguish for the loved ones they leave behind. The most common time for families to fall out is at a funeral when emotions are already running high and the event is further charged by distant relatives or indeed close members of the family asking the question “well what did the deceased leave me?” Indeed, it is quite common for a high percentage of litigation cases to involve disgruntled relatives following the death of a loved one. The most recent example being Gill v RSPCA 2010 which could have some serious consequences and escalation of serious costs which will be borne by the Estate or the parties involved in legal action. Your Will may be as simple or as complicated as you like, however the outcome will be the same, leaving what you have to whom you would like to receive it. In the first instance a consultation is normally beneficial in the comfort of your own home so that the I may discuss your requirements. The information you give will be drafted into a document so that you can define where and to whom your estate can pass.

C. So why should I regularly review my will? If you made your Will some time ago it might be time to review it especially after the changing of personal circumstances such as marriage, divorce, new addition to the family, death of a family member or a move. A change to your financial situation, an increase in your property value and even new tax laws and legislations can also make an update to your Will necessary. A valid Will is vital if you want to avoid any misunderstandings after your death and will avoid costly and lengthy litigation. If you remarry for instance, your current Will is no longer valid, and you die under the rules of Intestacy and the State will decide who will benefit from your Estate. If you remarry you will also need to make a new Will that specifically takes into account your new marriage particularly if you wish to leave your Estate to children from your previous marriage or to your new partner on the provision that your Estate reverts to your children on his or her death. A review helps you to be sure that the people or charities you want to benefit from your Will will continue to do so. Often changing your Will can be as simple as drawing up a codicil (an addition or change to existing) that can be signed and kept with your existing Will.
