A Vacation in the Country.... HOW DO I LOVE YOU?... LET ME COUNT THE WAYS!
The number of reasons to spend a vacation in the country are almost endless. At the top of that list is simply this - a slower pace! If you feel like your life moves at the velocity of a Nascar Race, jump off the speedway and take a slow cruise to the country. Friendly folks, small town charm, a deep breath of country air, no one pressuring you: now that is a prescription for peace. About that drive, imagine coasting down the back roads, forsaking the super highway. Instead of skyscrapers and traffic jams, you are passing long stretches of green pastures, grazing cattle and smiling people waving from their front porch. You take a refreshing dip in cool spring waters. Enjoy a family meal at a mom-and-pop diner. Your choice for an overnight stay? A cabin in the woods, a stay at a sweet guest house or a B&B with gracious hosts.
1,000 WelComes!
All of the villages in the Fun Times Magazine coverage area would be considered “small town” by most standards... and we are great with that. We have a way of life we enjoy and love to share. Come and stay awhile, be a little bit country for a few days. No cowboy boots required. While you are on your rural holiday, use the Fun Times as your go-to guide. It has been created to assist you on planning and enjoying your time in this land we love. References to services, maps to cities and parks, listings of attractions, informative stories and invitations from businesses are all here for you, our guest. Take a deep breath. Switch gears from RACE to STROLL. Now, doesn’t that feel better already? Celebrate a few days of delighting in your surroundings and just being! We extend a very warm welcome to you.

It’s All About the Water Whatever its form, water has always been the
attraction at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Freshwater springs attract a variety of wildlife. Mineral springs were once sought for medicinal qualities. Travertine Creek and Rock Creek beckon waders and swimmers. Veterans Lake calls to fishermen to test their skills. Lake of the Arbuckles, the park’s dominant feature, provides excellent motor boating, skiing, sailing, fishing and swimming. The springs are formed when water passes through underground rock formations. The water is then forced upward through fissures in the rock layer. Some rock layers contain sulfur and bromine. Water coming through these layers collects the minerals and becomes mineral water. Water passing through rock layers that do not contain these minerals remains fresh.

Archeologists believe that this area may have been inhabited for as long as 7,000 years. The ancient people called this place “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters.” They believed in the healing power of the strong-smelling mineral water. The Caddos, Comanches, Chickasaws and Choctaws came later for the refreshing liquid. In 1855, the lands became part of the Chickasaw Nation.
White pioneers gradually drifted into the Chickasaw Nation and built a community in the late 1800s. A town formed around what is now Pavilion Springs and was named Sulphur. Fearing the springs might suffer from uncontrolled use, the Chickasaw Nation agreed with the Federal Government to create a national park. In 1902, 640 acres were transferred to the United States and given the name of Sulphur Springs Reservation. In 1906, the area was renamed Platt National Park in honor of Senator Orville Hitchcock Platt. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built pavilions and roads, laid out trails, engineered waterfalls and planted half a million trees and shrubs. In 1976 Platt National Park was combined with Arbuckle Recreation Area and additional lands to create a new national recreation area in honor of the land’s longtime inhabitant: the Chickasaws. GET OUTDOORS AT TURNER FALLS PARK Turner Falls Park, with its 77 foot waterfall, abundant natural beauty, and unique geological formations, has been enjoyed by generations of visitors since 1868. Today’s guests still appreciate the splendor of God’s handiwork and an opportunity to escape to the great outdoors. Whether a day trip or a week of camping, Turner Falls will refresh you. A recent improvement to ticketing at the park has made admission easier. Online purchasing of tickets is now available through the park’s website - www.turnerfallspark.com. This assures your admittance to the park. You must have a valid ticket for every day you occupy the park, for every person in your vehicle. Camping fees are additional. Swimming in these spring-fed creeks has always been the most popular activity at the Falls. The refreshing water keeps the Oklahoma summer heat at bay. You may enjoy wading in the shallow areas with little ones, letting time drift by on your floatie or diving into the deep pools. Turner Falls mandates that all children under 12 MUST wear a Coast Guard certified floatatio device. The Park does not provide or rent these devices, so plan ahead.
Turner Falls Park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Day Admission is from 6:00am-8:30pm. To obtain more information, check the website (see above) or search the Park on Facebook or call 580-369-2988. The Park is located between I-35 exits 47 and 51 on Hwy 77 (5 miles south of Davis)

AGRITOURISM IS GROW SOUTH-CENTRAL A
gritourism is defined as “a commercial enterprise at a working farm, ranch, or agricultural plant conducted for the enjoyment of visitors that generates supplemental income for the owner.” That sounds a little stuffy, so we like to think of it as a different way to have fun on the farm! In this region of our great state, there are several opportunities to add a “country experience” to your get-away.
Lodging
Do you dream of waking up to a quiet morning, birds singing and the obvious absence of sirens and traffic noise? Well, you have options and they all offer a peaceful respite. Choose from a cabin on a working cattle ranch, a tree house in a pecan grove, a luxury inn secluded in a pastoral setting or a spa resort surrounded by an orchard.
Maybe it’s time to revisit the childhood fun of a tree house. Consider Rock Creek Retreat’s cabins in the trees near Dougherty. This lodging combines a lofty, leafy view with the expected adult amenities. Most have full kitchens, comfortable beds for up to 6 and decks that give you a birds-eye view for wildlife watching. Pam and Cara, your hosts, usually have an evening camp fire going for guests to gather around. Nearby are pecan trees, some believed to have been planted during the Lincoln years.
Thinking a quiet night’s sleep followed by a huge country breakfast might do your soul good? The place for you is the Cedar & Stone Bed & Breakfast in Tishomingo. Luther and Vicki Harbert are the hosts on this ranch that has been in the family for 61 years. Luther’s love for the land and Vicki’s fabulous cooking skills combine to make this an unforgettable get-away. The quaint cedar and stone cabin, built in 2016, is outfitted with every creature comfort. But you may find your favorite place is rocking on the front porch, gazing across the peaceful, green pasture.

Shiloh Morning Inn is the luxury version of a rural retreat owned by David and Jessica Pfau. Choose from a stay in a suite in the main house or cottages spread over the 73 acre property east of Ardmore. All have hot tubs or whirlpool tubs, fireplaces and restful king-size beds. Start the day with homemade breakfast, then catch a chair on the porch or by the pond and just let time pass. Combine your lodging with an on-site massage or spa treatment, a walk through the orchard and a gourmet breakfast. You may want to finish the day with dinner in the Van Horn’s 5-star restaurant at Echo Canyon Spa Resort, Sulphur. Take a dip in the pool or relax in the mineral water Jacuzzi. This luxury inn has a private fruit orchard and berry vines that provide produce for the dishes they serve. Enjoy a stroll on the serene 27 acre property.

miles of mountain range are covered by the Arbuckle Mountains, surrounded by rivers, lakes and verdant prairie land offering recreational activities like fishing, camping, hunting, farming and country stays.
L OKLAHOMA Activities
In the Arbuckles, you will find plenty of activities to keep your family entertained, but two area businesses make that strong connection to Agritourism. Have you dreamed of signing on for a taste of western culture and saddling up for a ride across the prairie? At Arbuckle Trail Rides, Sulphur, you will have all of the fun with none of the trouble of owning your own steed. Pete and Cheri Wolfe offer year-round guided trail rides for riders age 6 and up. Ride from 1-2 hours or up to a full-day excursion on well-trained horses with experienced guides. Riding instructions are available so no experience is necessary. If running off a little energy sounds like a good idea for your tyke or teen, make your way to the Brown Ranch Hay Maze, south of Ardmore. Note that this is a seasonal activity (usually October) but go ahead and mark your calendars now. Different ages, different games...and letting kids be kids. Expect (rubber) Chicken Chunking, the Hay Maze, obstacle courses, a 3-story hay castle and much, much more. Set on a working cattle ranch, the Browns enjoy seeing families making memories...and eating s’mores.

What’s Up With
Those Rows of Rocks? T
here you are, cruising on I-35, and you enter the Arbuckle Mountain range. If anyone in the car looks up from their electronics long enough, they realize that this super-slab is slicing right through solid rock, providing a clue as to how the Earth was formed. Just south of the slices are thin rock formations jutting up from the ground in almost perfect rows... in row after row. What is that all about? And how did all those slanted layers come to be? These geological folds are a wonder and well worth a look. Better yet, take a tour and gain some understanding of what is laid out before you. Arbuckle Geosciences LLC offers tours that will educate and amaze the participants. Dr. Bob Neman, your trip leader, has more than 40 years of experience in Arbuckle Mountain exploration. His tours include a variety of locations in South-central Oklahoma and are tailored to the participants’ objectives. At one point, the Arbuckles were as high as the Rocky Mountains and they are millions of years old. Over time, foldings, faultings and weather have made drastic changes in the structure. Arbuckle Geosciences’ tours explain these alterations and walk you through those years of our evolving Earth. Gather up your gang, lock the electronics in the trunk and have a day outside. We highly recommend booking a tour to explore the Arbuckles.
Sulphur/Davis
Reservations are required for the half - and full-day tours. Rates are $25/person for half-day trips and $40/person for full day, discounts for children under 12. Comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes are mandatory. Tours are available March - October. Contact Dr. Neman at: 580-310-4326 or 580-436-1626 or neman@cableone.net

DO GOOD WHILE HAVING FUN! Ready to get a little outside of your comfort zone, boost your confidence, and se spectacular views? Do all of that and more at Air Donkey Zipline, west of Davis, OK. Upon completion of your hiking, stair-climbing, blowing-through-the-breeze adventure, you will feel like a super hero. Truthfully, you are also a conqueror in another way. Simply by having fun, you have supported real life heroes. What you might not know is that Air Donkey Zipline is owned by Changing Course Foundation a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They have been changing the course of people’s lives since 1998. Their goal in purchasing the 102 acres and the established zip line business is to develop an Equine Assisted and Experiential Camp and Counseling Center. Revenue from the cabin rentals (Horseshoe Springs Cabins) and the zip line allows them to continue to work with those struggling with addictions and trauma. Changing Courses Foundation (CCF) works with a wide scope of individuals and groups, but a large part of their focus is our American Service Veterans. They support these heroes through traditional and experiential treatment on their path to healing. CCF combines sessions in-office, on challenge courses, and in the pasture with their horses. With every client or group, they offer a variety of approaches to meet them where they are and help them change their course!

Deep in the Heart of the Arbuckles Dougherty,
OK lies deep in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, on the Washita River. The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!”
Today’s Dougherty has a different story. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here… and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. A short distance to area attractions, a drive to Dougherty pays off in scenic beauty, whether by auto or motorcycle. Along with the beautiful countryside, Dougherty holds some interesting finds. Stay a few nights in a well-equipped tree house (Rock Creek Retreat) and be sung to sleep by Mother Nature. Stop by the only store in town (Dougherty Store) for local chit-chat, snacks or cold drinks. Should you encounter citizens of this burg, you’ll experience an uncommon friendliness. Seeking a step back in time? Maybe a slower pace? Peace and quiet? A relaxing drive? Turn your wheels towards Dougherty and enjoy the ride!

CHICKASAW HISTORY ON DISPLAY Tishomingo is the historic capital of the Chickasaw Nation and the county seat of Johnston County. The Chickasaw Nation’s connection with the area precedes 1856, the year Chickasaw citizens gathered at Pennington Creek to draft the tribal constitution. Visitors can experience the Chickasaw story while visiting the Chickasaw National Capitol, Chickasaw Council House Museum, Chickasaw White House and nearby Ft. Washita.
Chickasaw National Capitol
Fort Washita
Sitting atop a hill in Tishomingo, this stately three-story building served as the Chickasaw Nation’s Capitol until Oklahoma statehood. Built of locallysourced granite in 1898, the restored building now serves as museum of the Chickasaw people. Guided tours are available, free of charge. Chickasaw Capitol Building, 411 W. 9th St., is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., TuesdaySaturday, except for federal holidays. For more information 580-371-9835.
Built in 1842 as a United States military post, the mission of Fort Washita was to protect the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes from the Plains Indians. Fort Washita gives visitors the opportunity to explore the restored structures, see reenactments, and experience a yearly Fur Trade Era Rendezvous. Fort Washita, 3348 OK-199, is located 12 miles northwest of Durant on S.H. 199. For more information, call 580-924-6502.
Chickasaw Council House Museum Visitors will discover the first Chickasaw Council House built in Indian Territory preserved inside the Chickasaw Council House Museum. The quaint downtown, with its brick streets, has been named a Main Street City and is a Nationally Registered Historic District. The Santa Fe Depot is a significant part of Pauls Valley’s history. This 1905 structure was saved from demolition in 1989 and has gone from boarded up eyesore to a jewel of the downtown and serves as the Santa Fe Depot Museum. Now housing a collection of photos, memorabilia and pioneer artifacts, the museum also has a steam locomotive, coal tender and vintage red caboose just outside. Bald Eagles in South-central Oklahoma South-central Oklahoma offers year round activities and one of the most popular winter events is watching Bald Eagles. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area’s Arbuckle Lake, Lake Murray State Park, and Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge are all excellent locations to observe these majestic, once endangered, birds in the wild. Since 2007, Bald Eagles are no longer on the endangered list. Due to combined efforts of protection from many private citizens, elected officials, and government agencies, the eagle has come back from the edge of extinction. This increase in population allows us the privilege of viewing them in their natural state. Migration from the north is mid-November until mid-March. The eagle, as with most birds, looks for water to live by. Those winter months are the perfect time to search for the estimated 1,000 plus eagles that call the Sooner State home during the season’s peak. There are approximately 80 pairs that are year-round Oklahoma residents.
In the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), there are 2 park-led Eagle Watch events each year in January. Attending these activities assures bird-watchers will have access to the area’s optimal viewing spots, usually on the east side of Arbuckle Lake. At Lake Murray State Park, there has been an increase in sightings since 2014. At the south end of the lake, numerous mature eagles and several small, younger birds have been observed. The terrain and availability of water draws the birds for long winter stays. Sightings are quite common near the dam. During the recent winter season, Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge had 28 Bald Eagle sightings and has confirmed 2 nesting pairs. The Refuge is a birder’s paradise with 300 species documented in the beautiful Cumberland Pool area.
For more information on in-season Eagle Watches, contact the CNRA at 580-622-7234 or www.nps.gov/chic . For Lake Murray State Park information, 580-223-4044 or www.oklahomaparks.com. For Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge information, 580-371-2402 or www.fws.gov/refuge/tishomingo.

History on Display History is BIG in South-central Oklahoma and if you love history, you better pack a bag; you’ll need to stay a while to see all the great museums in the area. A total of 12 museums are featured in the Fun Times Magazine. Plan ahead because they are all worth a visit. Information on admission (if any), hours, and addresses will all be found on pages 20-24.
Davis 1 2
The Davis Museum is located in the Santa Fe Depot in downtown Davis and is managed by the Arbuckle Historical Society. Some of the unusual displays include a talking Buffalo Soldier, a model of Fort Arbuckle and an antique print shop. You will see why the railroad was important to Davis and how the settlement developed their schools, churches, farms, businesses and fire/police protection. There are Native American artifacts and the museum gives a nod to the unusual geological formations the Arbuckle Mountains are known for. On the south edge of Davis, is the Forgotten Wheels Museum. What started as a fascination with vintage Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, has morphed into a love of antique wheels of all kinds. In the early days, it was the small bikes, called “Hummers”, that piqued the interest of Tom and Sandra Webb. It didn’t take long before they started acquiring pieces of history on wheels. Over the years, that collection has taken on a life of its own. Motorcycles dating from 1940, automobiles from 1922 to 1956, and other memorabilia are on display. Check out the BSA Military Bike, the 1960 Panhead, Cushman Scooters and so much more. Out front, a Model T that looks like it carried the Clampetts to town; inside a 1956 pickup that has been in the Webb family for 4 generations. Open March-Nov, Wed-Sat 580-369-2764 or 369-8406. (Winter - call ahead or check Facebook)Their facility is handicap accessible. There is no admission fee but your donations help keep history alive. Find them at 1775 S. Hwy 77.
Sulphur 3
The old fire and police department building is the home for the Sulphur Museum. Many things remain from the structures former occupants. Be sure you step into the jail cell for a photo opportunity…then Facebook out a plea for bail money! There is a diorama of the settlement of Sulphur Springs, Indian Territory, dating prior to its removal in1903. You will find memorabilia of the popular Belleview and Vendome pools, the ranch of Gov. Roy Turner, as well as a tribute to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, who were married and made a movie in the area. The museum is operated by the Arbuckle Historical Society of Murray County.

Chickasaw Cultural Center featuring native musicians using traditional instruments
Also in Sulphur, and not to be missed, is the Chickasaw Cultural Center. The 109-acre campus is the place that the Chickasaw people are able to revitalize, celebrate and share their culture. A full story and information is on page 10 of the Fun Times Magazine.
Pauls Valley 5
Prepare for the FUN side of history at the Toy & Action Figure Museum. Here, the young and young at heart will step into the fantasy world of superheroes and comic books. For the small price of admission, you can become the conqueror that saves the day. Just being in the 6,000 square foot building, with all the explosive colors, is a visual treat. Viewing the exhibits will take you back to long-forgotten heroes and there are rooms where families can interact. Be sure to check out the life-size diorama of an adult collector’s bedroom. This is also home to the Oklahoma Cartoonists Collection.

The Santa Fe Museum is located in the 1905 depot. The exhibits tell of the early-day settling of the area with photos, school memorabilia and pioneer collectibles. A steam locomotive and coal tender that once traveled these tracks has found a permanent home here and a vintage red caboose rests behind it. Days and hours are seasonal so call ahead. at 204 E. Paul, downtown.

7-10
Four important sites are in or near Tishomingo: Chickasaw National Capital, Chickasaw Council House Museum, Chickasaw White House and the near-by Fort Washita. All tell of the rich history, government and culture of this group of people. Complete information on each site can be found on pages 46 & 48 of the Fun Times Magazine, as well as pages 20-24.

A visit to the Greater Southwest Historical Museum will open a door into South-central Oklahoma’s history. Housed in Ardmore’s former Oklahoma National Guard Armory, you will find exhibits detailing the area’s st ry from the mid-1800s to the present. When you think of the days of the pioneers, an image of covered wagons, one-room schoolhouses, general stores, log cabins and a simpler way of life comes to mind. There are exhibits throughout the 30,000 square foot building, ranging from the Eaves-Brady Cabin, built in 1892, to one of the first electric cars used in this region. A new exhibit, Tools of Our Land, shows th agricultural side of our history.

To visit the Military Memorial Museum is to gain a greater sense of the sacrifices our military men and women make for our freedom. As you walk through the exhibition halls, you will view memorabilia from as far back as the War with Mexico (1847) thru the Persian Gulf War. On display are rare uniforms, medals, weaponry and other military artifacts. The collection of relics is unbelievably vast for what first appears to be a small spa e. Particularly touching exhibits are the formal dinner setting, termed the “Table for One”, honoring POWs and MIAs and the Fallen Soldier tribute. This one consists of a warrior’s rifle with attached bayonet stuck in the ground, boots next to it, topped with thei helmet as a way to memorialize a fighter killed during service The Military Memorial Museum shoulders the responsibility of honoring, educating and reminding us of the price that has been paid for us.

Celebrating the Cowboy Way of Life By Leslei Fisher
The Cowboy Way Jubilee is so much more than a simple festival! It was founded with the mission of celebrating the Cowboy Way of Life. This wholesome alternative to current societal value trends is taught through entertainment and example. Completely ‘G-rated,’ it’s the perfect family event! It kicks off on Thursday at 5:30pm with a Kids’ Parade down Main Street. The parade ends with a campfire style Sing-A-Long (lyrics provided). Friday & Saturday runs from 9am to 9pm, Sunday 9am to 5pm with a final event banquet 5:30 to 9pm. Fans of Westerns (film and television) come from all over the world to meet the Hollywood Celebrities, ask them questions, and pose for
photos. The fans enjoy sharing their childhood memories and heroes with new generations. Old Western episodes and films are shown with backstory details rarely found elsewhere, creating a unique shared experience. Cowboy music and poetry (the Western part of ‘Country & Western’) are an equally large part of the three-day event. Award-winning performers from across North America volunteer to entertain while introducing new generations to timeless cowboy music and contemporary works true to the genre — steeped in bluegrass, a bit of jazz and a lot of old-fashioned storytelling. It’s happy music, recognized world-wide.

Workshops and demonstrations showcase master “cowboying” skills and provide a direct teaching experience for all ages. Cowboy skills like roping, yodeling, fiddling, horseshoeing, and hitching are all featured cowboy arts. Children play timeless games, see demos, and meet livestock up close and personal in the Kid’s Korral. Cowboy artisans display and sell their wares as part of the Cowboy Crossroads Market encompassing fine art to beading and quilting, silversmiths to weavers. It all takes part the first weekend of May each year in Downtown Ardmore, OK. Check their website, www.CowboyWayFest.com for details and address.

Arts and Entertainment for All at The Goddard Center By Cory Blankenship
