After all, if we don’t, who will see that the pristine waters, forest covered paths or historical landmarks of Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA) are protected for generations to come? Your commitment to become a “Friend of the Park” will leave your personal footprint. The Friends of CNRA is a group of people who love the park and want to support the National Park Service in their mission. The annual dues raise funds to support special projects, such as maintaiing the bison interpretative signage, cleaning trails, promoting public appreciation of the park and fundraising for the park’s special needs. The Friends of Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, which means all donations are tax-deductible and every dollar is used to conduct the mission of the group. A Barn Quilt Trail… We’re Just Getting Started Do you love quilts? Quilts, with all their bright colors and geometric patterns, can’t help but make any day brighter. So why not display those cheery designs outdoors for the whole world to see? That is the idea behind barn quilts and the revival of decorating barns. Barn quilts aren’t actually quilts of course. They are paintings of quilt blocks. Originally, the barn quilts were painted directly on the surface of the barn. Today, however, they’re quilt block designs painted on wood or metal and hung on barns. A full-size barn quilt is 8’ X 8’, but many are 4’ X 4’. The appropriate size, combined with brilliant colors, make the squares visible to anyone passing by. Extremely popular back east, barn quilts are just starting to make a showing in Oklahoma. A group of quilt-loving citizens in Murray County are in the beginning stages of creating a barn quilt trail. These coordinated and mapped out trails are a collection of quilt blocks mounted on location that make a driving or walking tour possible. These painted patterns are not limited to barns but may show up on homes, she sheds, businesses or mounted on posts and displayed in yards and parks. If you live in Murray County (Sulphur, Davis, Dougherty area) and want to get in on the fun, contact us. Turner Falls Park

Turner Falls Park, with its 77 foot waterfall, abundant natural beauty, and unique geological formations, has been enjoyed by generations of visitors since 1868. Today’s guests still appreciate the splendor of God’s handiwork and an opportunity to escape to the great outdoors. Whether a day trip or a week of camping, Turner Falls will refresh you. A recent improvement to ticketing at the park has made admission easier. Online purchasing of tickets is now available (and highly recommended) through the park’s website - www.turnerfallspark.com. This assures your admittance to the park. You must have a valid ticket for every day you occupy the park, for every person in your vehicle. Fees vary for weekdays, weekends and holidays. Fees are reduced in the winter. Camping fees are additional. Swimming in these spring-fed creeks has always been the most popular activity at the Falls. The refreshing water keeps the Oklahoma summer heat at bay. You may enjoy wading in the shallow areas with little ones, letting time drift by on your floatie or diving into the deep pools. Turner Falls mandates that all children under 12 MUST wear a Coast Guard certified floatation device. The Park does not provide or rent these devices, so plan ahead. In the slower season, enjoy the beauty that fall brings and a quieter time for a stroll. Trout fishing is offered from November thru February. A new feature that is not to be missed is the Laser Light Show, with the falls as a backdrop, set for December. Dual park tickets will be available to give access to both Turner Falls and Cross Bar Ranch Off-Road Park. This gives guests an opportunity to double up on the fun! Keep in mind that off-road vehicles are not allowed on the lower level of Turner Falls Park. Turner Falls Park is open 7 days a week. Day Admission is from 6:00am-8:30pm. Campers must be checked in by 10:00pm. In some areas, parking fees are charged. To obtain more information on fees, see page 22 or check the website (above).

Things are Cranking Up at

Cross Bar Ranch

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt. – John Muir Although Mr. Muir was probably not thinking of taking that path in an off-road vehicle, if he had visited Cross Bar Ranch, he might have changed his mind. Especially under the management of Midground Creators. Wake up off-roaders – things are about to get interesting! Midground Creators is a management team with vision. Early in 2017, they took on managing, promoting and developing 6,500 acres west of Davis, known as Cross Bar Ranch Off Road Park. The park is in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, south-central Oklahoma’s ancient mountain range. It is the largest and most centrally located off-road recreation area in the region. Cross Bar offers a diverse terrain that varies from flat, wide, open spaces to loamy hills with hardwood timber, as well as muddy bottoms and steep, rocky, hill climbing sections. In addition, the pan-

oramic views from mountain tops, crystal clear streams and brilliant star-filled night skies are like scenic icing on the rugged cake. Midground’s goal is to develop all of this into a premier outdoor recreation destination in the Central US. Every type of off-road vehicle will find their place in this challenging mountain range. Since 2017, Midground Creators has steadily made improvements to the main road, creating more trails and trail signage. They desire to provide a family-friendly atmosphere and do so by having security and a very hands-on management team. Safe, fun events are huge at Cross Bar. In June, the Red Dirt Jeep Crawl will be held. This is a fund raiser for Supporting Kids Foundation, a group working with families dealing with childhood cancer. In September, the Outlaw Off Road Race brings their national competition to Oklahoma. Whether participant or spectator, this race is pure fun! Watching gargantuan vehicles, with tires as big as your kid, climb straight up sheer rock cliffs… well, it’s pretty much unforgettable. Other events are in the planning so check the website. Midground Creators has a vision for further development. Future plans include cabins, additional full hook-up RV sites, concessions and a lake for swimming. It’s All About the Water Whatever its form, water has always been the attraction at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Freshwater springs attract a variety of wildlife. Mineral springs were once sought for medicinal qualities. Travertine Creek and Rock Creek beckon waders and swimmers. Veterans Lake calls to fishermen to test their skills. Lake of the Arbuckles, the park’s dominant feature, provides excellent motor boating, skiing, sailing, fishing and swimming. Archeologists believe that this area may have been inhabited for as long as 7,000 years. The ancient people called this place “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters.” They believed in the healing power of the strong-smelling mineral water.

White pioneers gradually drifted into the Chickasaw Nation and built a community in the late 1800's. A town formed around what is now Pavilion Springs and was named Sulphur. Fearing the springs might suffer from uncontrolled use, the Chickasaw Nation agreed with the Federal Government to create a national park. In 1902, 640 acres were transferred to the United States and given the name of Sulphur Springs Reservation. In 1906 the area was renamed Platt National Park in honor of Senator Orville Hitchcock Platt. During the 1930's, the Civilian Conservation Corps built pavilions and roads, laid out trails, engineered waterfalls and planted half a million trees and shrubs. In 1976 Platt National Park was combined with Arbuckle Recreation Area and additional lands to create a new national recreation area in honor of the land’s longtime inhabitants: the Chickasaws. Load the family into the car and set out on a safari adventure at Arbuckle Wilderness. This scenic drive-thru animal park will give you a close-up of a variety of exotic species. In addition, everyone will enjoy the walk-thru park and petting zoo. This excursion is a great opportunity to be amazed, create memories and laugh at the antics of the animals.

Journey into the Wilderness

Your journey through the park, Arbuckle Wilderness with the Arbuckle Mountains as 6132 Kay Starr Trail, Davis your backdrop, just off Interstate 35 at exit 51, south of Davis will showcase the www.arbucklewildernesspark.com expected and the 1-800-PETPARK (738-7275) very unexpected. The usual “characters” are here to give you a peek into their day. Keep on the lookout for camels, zebras, bison and ostriches. A little heads-up here: the ostrich and his camel friend are fairly certain you picked up a bucket or two of feed at the gate…and they are coming for it! Have your camera ready because pandemonium is about to ensue. Screams and laughter are guaranteed. Arbuckle Wilderness has quite an offering of the more unusual animals. Watch for the stunning white tiger, the beautifully marked and elegant giraffe, the watusi cow with its huge, awkward horns, and the rare Przewalski’s Horse. Add in the prehistoric-looking rhino, the mischievous hyena, and the Alpaca with their quirky, but oh-so-cute, grin. This list of possibilities is just getting started. After your drive, stop at the walk-thru park and petting zoo. Let the kids work off some energy at the moon bounce. Take a gander at the exhibits in the reptile house or go for a pony ride. Everyone should try their hand at the gem-mining exhibit. The walk-thru park opens on Memorial Day weekend and remains open through the summer, weather permitting. Safari bus tours are available for school and family groups, corporate outings, birthday parties and more. A minimum of 20 guests are required. Take the exotic journey together and up the fun level! Arbuckle Wilderness is located just off Interstate 35 at exit 51, south of Davis, OK. The park is less than two hours from the DFW Metroplex and about an hour south of Oklahoma City. General admission price is $16.99 for adults and $14.99 for children ages 3 to 11. Children under 3 are free. This includes the safari drive-thru and the walk-thru area. A military discount with ID and a Senior (over 55) discount are offered. Viewing the animals up close is spectacular but please remember – animals are unpredictable! Very often, treasures are carefully tucked away. But a good hunter usually reaps a great reward. That is the case with the 3 Sister’s Bakery and your reward will be sweet! In historic downtown Sulphur, there is a little gem you will want to seek. The sign above the door reads 3 Sister’s Boutique and, on a stroll through the store, you will find reasonably priced women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, children’s clothing, and a section of Christian gifts. But the minute you step in the door, the aroma tells you there is so much more. Mmmm…what is that smell? Fresh cinnamon rolls? A pina-colada cupcake? Warm chocolate brownies? Fresh-from-theoven cookies? Just follow your nose but please don’t trample anyone getting there. In the back of the store, Carol Allmon is turning out sinfully delicious baked-goods. A New Place to Play Looking for some wide-open space to run and play, picnic, camp... or just relax under a big shade tree? Want to avoid the crowd? Maybe it’s time to consider a new place to play. Fun Valley Park and Campground is that place. Fun Valley Park & Campground is 350 acres of playground with beautiful Honey Creek flowing through and the Washita River bordering its northern edge. This allows for great water sports, whether tubing, kayaking or canoeing. Be sure to bring your own equipment. Fishing is allowed in designated areas only. The park’s lake has a beach area for swimming and relaxing. There is no lifeguard on duty and life jackets are required for children 12 and under. This is a great place to cool down on those sweltering days. Camping is a big draw to this location. The RV park (formerly Deer Creek) is located between the cabins and park entrance. Full hook-ups, a shower house and laundry are available. A pecan orchard within the park offers shady spots for primitive tent camping. Water access, picnic tables and some firepits are provided. There are trails for ATV riding, hiking and biking. Admission to the park is $10 per person, per day. Camping fees are additional. There is so much natural beauty and activity opportunities at Fun Valley that it is quickly becoming a destination for visitors wanting to enjoy the outdoors.

There you are, cruising on I-35, and you enter the Arbuckle Mountain range. If anyone in the car looks up from their electronics long enough, they realize that this super-slab is slicing right through solid rock, providing a clue as to how the Earth was formed. Just south of the slices are thin rock formations jutting up from the ground in almost perfect rows... in row after row. What is that all about? And how did all those slanted layers come to be? These geological folds are a wonder and well worth a look. Better yet, take a tour and gain some understanding of what is laid out before you. Dougherty, Dougherty, OK lies deep in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains on the Washita River. The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said, “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!” The history of this burg is a tale of pre-statehood settlement by pioneer-ranchers, including Mazeppa Turner, the namesake of Turner Falls Park. In 1887 the railroad and post office were established and 1899 brought the first church. A school was chartered in 1908. Early day Dougherty was supported by rockcrushing plants, 2 cotton gins, farming and ranching. Today’s Dougherty has a different story. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here… and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. America Yesterday & Today In 2021 the railroad depot that established the town is taking on new life. In the ‘80s the Santa Fe Depot was bought by the Hale family. In 1991 it was sold to the Haines family and moved out of Dougherty to Hwy 7, outside of Sulphur. In early 2021 it was once again cut in half and carefully moved back home. It is now across the tracks from its previous location and back in the hands of the Hale family. Future plans are not yet solidified, but local folks are happy to see a piece of history return. Two forms of lodging are available here. Rock Creek Retreat offers tree houses for big people with all the modern conveniences. Enjoy comfortable beds, kitchens or kitchenettes, and a sitting area. All cabins have TV/DVD but it is highly recommended that you ignore them and relish your surroundings. Enjoy a bird’s eye view on your deck for wildlife watching or relaxing. Or join other guests around the firepit in the evening. An historic bridge sits on the property and makes an amazing back drop for ceremonies and pictures. The second lodging is Canyon Hill Cabin and is a great family gathering place. Situated on 30 acres and built with logs cut

New Visitor Center Opens Summer 2021 A new visitor center will open its doors in mid to late 2021. A variety of exhibits are offered, including orientation maps and videos, wildlife and natural habitat displays, interactive games and seasonally changing exhibits. A stop at the center before your tour through the refuge will equip you to better enjoy your time. Start at the orientation map to choose hiking trails, scenic drives, historic features and unique habitats you would like to visit. Streamline your wildlife search using exhibits featuring recent wildlife sightings and activities. Birders

delight in the over 300 species that may be sighted here. Pick up a check list to see how many you can find. Learning and laughter pair up at the Sounds of Nature, an exhibit with a karaoke feature and other interactive habitat exhibits. Kick your brain into gear with the “Who Lives Here” game, matching animals to their habitat. Move on to the “Have You Seen…” wall that changes seasonally and highlights visitors‘ recent sightings. Center staff are on hand to answer questions and give you guidance before you strike out on an exploration of the refuge. At the end of your tour, drop back in and report your experience using the exhibit tokens to record what you have spotted. Spend Some Time at Blue River Blue River is 3,367 acres of Postoak and Blackjack timber and beautiful waters broken by the occasional waterfall. Located just 8 miles northeast of Tishomingo in Southeast Oklahoma, this area offers spectacular views, great hiking, picnicking and wildlife watching.

A couple of not-to-be-missed events for trout fishermen are the trout derbies. Held on President’s Day weekend and Veteran’s Day weekend, these are well-attended tournaments. Registration information can be found at Scotty’s Blue River One Stop’s Facebook page or by calling 580-371-9288.

Well -known for its winter trout fishing, opportunities to make a great catch abound at Blue River. From November 1st through March 31st, the river is stocked with rainbows about every week. This area is managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, so make sure you have an updated fishing or hunting license, or a conservation pass for day/ weekend use. Purchase passes and licenses at the Chickasaw Information Center, Main Street in Tishomingo. Fishing license can also be bought at Scotty’s Blue River One Stop.

In addition to great fishing and hunting that Blue River provides, this is a beautiful location to just get out in nature. Huge granite outcroppings are an unusual site for most visitors and are magnificent upon close inspection. Grab a picnic lunch and plan to make a day of hiking, exploring and relaxing. All camping is primitive and is allowed only in designated areas. There are two entrances to Blue River -South entrance - 4 miles east of Tishomingo on State Hwy 78, 6½ miles north on Bullard Chapel Road or North entrance – 9 miles north of Tishomingo on U.S. Hwy 377, 1 mile east on State Hwy 7.

What? You have never witnessed a Fish Fight? Somewhat like a fist fight, only slimier. It is quite entertaining, especially for the younger set, and a regular comedy if you are fortunate enough to catch the fish in action AND the kids watching! And you can catch this show for a buck-fifty… that’s right… $1.50. What should you expect for this outlay of cash? Expect to witness huge catfish (almost) throwing punches to get at the fish nuggets you are tossing their way. If you don’t have kids, stand by and wait a minute until some come along. Offer to buy them a cup of food or two. Then stand back and watch the merriment. The water will boil with monster-size cats, climbing on top of each other to get to the nuggets. But mostly you will see a lot of fish lips. Yep, fish lips! You would think these whiskered lake lurkers haven’t seen food in a week. But upon close examination, you are assured that this must play out several times a day. And you are correct. Where is this action taking place? At the walkway to Lake Murray Marina. (see pages 45 & 47) It may sound like you are just feeding fish, but don’t miss the joy in this simple (cheap) activity.

Lake Murray: Site of the New

Murray Harbor Marina & Resort Oklahoma’s newest marina resort will officially open as Summer 2021 peeks over the horizon. Murray Harbor Marina and Resort, located on the east side of Lake Murray State Park, is a large-scale, full-service marina offering both wet slips and dry storage. This is only the second marina in the 83-year history of the state park. Murray Harbor is a partnership between Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation and Starboard Marina Partners. It is the fruition of a vision of Jerry Winchester, Oklahoma Tourism Executive Director and native of nearby Dickson, OK. Starboard Marina Partners has a proven history of award-winning marina developments at Skiatook and Keystone Lakes in Oklahoma, as well as Missouri’s Table Rock Lake.

In this first phase of development, the marina has 240 slips, a world-class ship store, boat rental, Blackbeard Marine sales and service and RV/Boat storage.
