Year-round Playground Getting away to the Arbuckles is a year-round possibility. The south-central section of the great state of Oklahoma is blessed with moderate weather in all seasons. Mother Nature a la Arbuckles dresses herself in splendor for visitors at all times. The most common time to visit the area is in the summer. Schools are out and family activities abound. If the going gets too hot, the hot get going to one of the many lakes, streams or rivers for a cool down. And there is always an air-conditioned adventure to be found just around the corner. Autumn in the Arbuckles is awesome! The temps are milder and the pace is slower. You will still find plenty to do, but the opportunity to stroll through a weekend instead of run and to enjoy God’s handiwork with fall foliage and changing scenery, is worth the effort it takes to “gear down.” Winter here has a beauty of its own. In nature, winter is a time when plants and animals rest and prepare for the spring. Maybe we should heed the advice. Even in the winter, temperatures are
still mild enough most of the time for a walk in our many parks and lake areas. Jack Frost doesn’t often come nipping, but on the rare occasion that he brings some white fluff, the contrast of dark, bare trees against crisp white snow with crystal clear streams running, leaves you awestruck. Many area cabins and lodging have fireplaces to curl up by. Toss some hot chocolate mix in your bag and come on! Finally…spring. The Arbuckles begin to awaken and bloom. While things begin to “green-up”, you could take the opportunity to cure that last bit of cabin fever with a getaway. The landscape seems to change daily with trees leafing out, the Redbuds (our state tree) begin to blossom deep pink buds and cover the mountainside and wildflowers pop up everywhere. Activities, attractions and lodgings are easier to get in to. A springtime sabbatical is probably just the tonic you need to regroup and refocus. As you can see, the Arbuckles can be your year-round playground. Come have some fun!

Happiness is Homemade Happiness is Homemade. For the RockHouse Bakery & Gifts, these words are not some contrived marketing phrase. It is the sentiment your taste buds are conveying to your brain after you have sampled the wares at this sweet establishment.
A stop at the RockHouse will delight your desire for freshly made foods, be it soups, sandwiches, salads or a little something from the sweet “food group”. Speaking of sweets, prepare for cookies, cakes, pies and all variety of special desserts. Many baked goods may be special ordered for take-home. The perfect partner for your treat will be a cup of specialty coffee or tea… and a little bit of unhurried time! This is a family-operated business and each member brings something different to the table. Betty Stephens has been feeding people beautiful meals for years, commonly being encouraged to do it as a business. So, upon retirement from her state job, she took on a new career. The family worked for 2 years to restore the rock house on Main Street, while weaving a vision of what the business would encompass. Daughter Theresa, a.k.a. “The Cookie Lady”, is a trained chef and turns out sumptuous cakes and cookies. Granddaughters Aelisha, Elizabeth and Abigail assist with business, retail, marketing and social media. Dad Danny is tapped for handy-man jobs…and tastetesting. Everyone has a part and the end result is to the delight of the guests. Betty states that the biggest blessing of the RockHouse is seeing folks slow down, savor the moment and enjoy some quiet time.
“It makes me grateful to see people take some time out and allow us to be their happy place” she says. A recent customer reported that he and his wife had found their special place. And that magic seems to happen for many of their guests. Plan for some time in the gift shop at the RockHouse. You will find home décor, kitchen accessories, T-shirts and treasures. All of the retail is hand-picked by the ladies with an eye to offering something different. Their sweet little tea room is also available for small group gatherings. RockHouse Bakery and Gifts is located in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, down curving, tree-shaded roads to Dougherty, OK. The scenic drive is part of the beautiful experience that awaits you. Finding them at 501 Main Street won’t be a problem because downtown Dougherty is only 3 blocks long. They are open Thur – Sat. Check their Facebook page or call 580-993-2117 or 618-4350 for hours.

Turner Falls Park Turner Falls Park, with its 77 foot waterfall, abundant natural beauty, and unique geological formations, has been enjoyed by generations of visitors since 1868. Today’s guests still appreciate the splendor of God’s handiwork and an opportunity to escape to the great outdoors. Whether a day trip or a week of camping, Turner Falls will refresh you. A recent improvement to ticketing at the park has made admission easier. Online purchasing of tickets is now available through the park’s website www.turnerfallspark.com. This assures your admittance to the park. You must have a valid ticket for every day you occupy the park, for every person in your vehicle. Camping fees are additional. Swimming in these spring-fed creeks has always been the most popular activity at the Falls. The refreshing water keeps the Oklahoma summer heat at bay. You may enjoy wading in the shallow areas with little ones, letting time drift by on your floatie or diving into the deep pools. Turner Falls mandates that all children under 12 MUST wear a Coast Guard certified floatation device. The Park does not provide or rent these devices, so plan ahead.

It’s All About the Water
Whatever its form, water has always been the attraction at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Freshwater springs attract a variety of wildlife. Mineral springs were once sought for medicinal qualities. Travertine Creek and Rock Creek beckon waders and swimmers. Veterans Lake calls to fishermen to test their skills. Lake of the Arbuckles, the park’s dominant feature, provides excellent motor boating, skiing, sailing, fishing and swimming.
The springs are formed when water passes through underground rock formations. The water is then forced upward through fissures in the rock layer. Some rock layers contain sulfur and bromine. Water coming through these layers collects the minerals and becomes mineral water.
Fun
&S un a t th e CN RA
Water passing through rock layers that do not contain these minerals remains fresh.
Archeologists believe that this area may have been inhabited for as long as 7,000 years. The ancient people called this place “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters.” They believed in the healing power of the strong-smelling mineral water. The Caddos, Comanches, Chickasaws and Choctaws came later for the refreshing liquid. In 1855, the lands became part of the Chickasaw Nation. White pioneers gradually drifted into the Chickasaw Nation and built a community in the late 1800s. A town formed around what is now Pavilion Springs and was named Sulphur. Fearing the springs might suffer from uncontrolled use, the Chickasaw Nation agreed with the Federal Government to create a national park. In 1902, 640 acres were transferred to the United States and given the name of Sulphur Springs Reservation. In 1906, the area was renamed Platt National Park in honor of Senator Orville Hitchcock Platt. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built pavilions and roads, laid out trails, engineered waterfalls and planted half a million trees and shrubs. In 1976 Platt National Park was combined with Arbuckle Recreation Area and additional lands to create a new national recreation area in honor of the land’s longtime inhabitant: the Chickasaws.

Experience Peace at the Canyon Hill Cabin
Wide open green pastures. Birds singing sweetly. A gentle breeze blowing across your resting spot on the deck. The total absence of traffic noise. These are a few of the first things you will experience at Canyon Hill Cabin. You may also realize that stress melted off as you traveled the long driveway.
Set on 30 private acres, the cabin offers a place to retreat to and leave the real world behind. A longtime family home, the current owners, Aelisha and Kelsey, are the third generation to be the passionate caretakers of the property. This is a special place with wonderful memories of family gatherings “at the Grands”, as her grandparents were known. The lodge now offers that tranquility to guests. With 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, it will accommodate up to 10 people. Most of the comforts of home are provided, including linens, an equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi and TV with streaming capability. Plan to spend some time on the large deck or down at the firepit. The back 20 acres have walking trails carved out by Aelisha’s grandfather. The logs for original construction of the cabin were cut from this land in the early 1930s.
When ask why she is sharing the family home with guests, Aelisha said “I love to give people a place to escape big city life and gather with their family, like we have done. This is a wonderful place to make lasting memories together.” She says this is a way to keep it in the family and they occasionally still come back for celebrations.
The Canyon Hill Cabin is just outside of Dougherty, a small community nestled in the Arbuckle Mountains. Lying a bit south of Arbuckle Lake, the route is a meandering course that encourages you to go at a slower pace and enjoy the view. Might as well adopt that attitude now and keep it for you visit. More information may be obtained at their website: www.canyonhillcabin.com.

e h t g Bikin Let’s roll!
Kick stands up and let’s roll! The winding roads through the Arbuckle Mountains beckon, bidding you to leave the day-today behind…escape. In this area, the eastern woodlands meet the desert-like, mixed-grass prairie and you will see the best of both. Take in the view, meet friendly people, see some sites and leave with a saddlebag full of memories. Riders love that almost meditative state that comes from the drone of your engine and the hum of the road that blows your worries away. “Riding is all about fantasy and freedom,” one rider confessed to me. “It’s easy to bail out of life, cut through the wind and enjoy God’s creation with no framework.” Freedom and fantasy – sounds like just the ticket. Art and Mary Young are frequent Arbuckle area riders. Their wheels of choice? A trike. Their favorite drive? What we laughingly call the “Mountains, Mineral Springs & Manure Tour”. Seems it’s all about following the 7s. “From Sulphur, go west on Hwy. 7 to Davis. Hop on Hwy 77, going south for about 22 miles to Springer. Go across there (on Hwy 53) to Hwy 177and head north back to Sulphur. Simple – 7 to 77 to 177,” explains Art. “You will see open fields of grazing cattle, curves and mountains and, at the right time of year, lots of color.” “Scenic heaven on 77” is a term the locals hear. The route Art laid out runs about 59 miles with plenty of interesting stops along the way. South of Davis, visit Forgotten Wheels Museum. Sit a spell on the front porch, have a cold drink and browse the antique and gift shop. The Webb family has quite an assortment of unique finds. A little further along 77, you will find the 777 Zipline. A quick zip will give you a bird’s eye-view of Turner Falls and get your heart pumping! “It doesn’t matter if it is the middle of July, it’s always feels cooler when you ride into the Chickasaw National Park,” remarks Mary Young. “Riding the Park is always refreshing, maybe it’s the springs. It is just slow and curvy and laid-back.” Scenic

Charlie Wright agrees that the National Park is quite a place. He speaks from experience as he is a rider and an innkeeper. He enjoys hosting all types of visitors to the area, but feels a special kinship to riders that lodge with him. His place, the Sulphur Springs Inn, sits across the street from the Park. The location is quite an advantage for folks looking for a sanctuary of peace, an opportunity to sit by the springs or walk a trail. “I believe I would have to say my favorite local ride is to Dougherty. The hills, twists & bends, the trees and color, the view changes with the seasons. There are so many different roads that lead in and out, you have all kinds of choices,” Wright stated. He is correct on that. For a community with a population of 250, there is one state highway (110) and 3 county roads that will land you in the one-block center of town. Stop at the one-and-only Dougherty Store for a break and to “chew the fat” with a local. If you are here on the right day, you will enjoy lunch and sweets at RockHouse Bakery. Make that break from reality, get lost on a twisting ribbon of road and have an experience that will leave a lasting impression on your heart.

Have No Fear... the Toy & Action Figure Museum At The Toy and Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley, the young and young at heart will step into the fantasy world of superheroes and comic books. For the small price of admission, you may depart from harsh reality and become the conqueror that saves the day… or learn about one. Visitors to the museum will find displays explaining how action figures are created, from concept to design through manufacturing. Just being in the 6,000 square foot building, with all the explosive colors, is a visual treat. Viewing the exhibits will take you back to longforgotten heroes as well as acquaint you with present day characters. Guests walk through a “skyscaper” to enter in to “Action City”. Action figures are hidden within the colorful shapes and your eyes will have to go on a scavenger hunt to see all the treasures. There are rooms where families can interact and become their

favorite superhero. Be sure to check out the life-size diorama of an adult collector’s bedroom and the cave-like room with an extensive Batman collection. The Toy and Action Figure Museum is also home to the Oklahoma Cartoonists Collection, a display of original art by individuals who have worked professionally in the field of comics. The artists of Dick Tracy, Broomhilda, Alley Oop, Batman and more have their work on exhibit here, and all have Oklahoma ties. For more information, visit the website at www.actionfiguremuseum.com, search for them on Facebook, or call 405-238-6300. The Museum is located at 111 S. Chickasaw in downtown Pauls Valley, just 2 miles off I-35 at exit 72.
Become a Friend of the Park Does your family have a long history of reunions in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), possibly dating back to the Platt National Park days? Or perhaps you are a “newbie” to the peace and serenity this Park offers. Either way, you are invited to join the Friends of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, or Friends of the Park, as they are commonly known. For the last two decades, Park Friends Groups have been created to assist National Parks all across America. These groups support needed park programs and projects that have been beyond the reach of appropriated dollars, especially in these days of cut-backs. One focus of the Friends of CNRA is the bison herd. Descendants of the current herd were brought to this park in the 1920s. A historical part of CNRA, the Friends are working to enhance the visitor’s experience in viewing them as well as their care. In 2016, an interpretive sign was placed at the Bison Viewpoint. This was a project co-funded by Friends and Leadership Murray County. We need your help. If you enjoy the special place that this park is and want to see the amazing beauty remain for generations to come, become a Friend. Celebrate the fact that CNRA does not charge entrance fees by joining the Friends Group. Annual memberships are $25. for individuals, $50. for families. Business and corporate levels are available. Your dues are tax-deductible and funds are kept local. Membership information is available on the Friends Group Facebook page where you may join thru PayPal or mail a check to P.O. Box 976, Sulphur, OK 73086. Information is also available at Sulphur Chamber of Commerce, 717 W. Broadway, 580-622-2824 or the CNRA Superintendent’s Office at 901 W. 1st St., 580-622-7220.

Dougherty, America - Y Dougherty, OK lies deep in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, on the Washita River. The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!”
The history of this burg is a tale of pre-statehood settlement by pioneerranchers, including Mazeppa Turner, the namesake of Turner Falls Park. In 1887, the railroad and post office were established and 1899 brought the first church. A school was chartered in 1908. Early day Dougherty was supported by rock-crushing plants, 2 cotton gins, farming and ranching. Today’s Dougherty has a different story. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here… and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. A short
distance to area attractions, a drive to Dougherty pays off in scenic beauty, whether by auto or motorcycle.
Unique lodgings, a sumptuous eatery, a got-it-all convenience store, and an RV park make it possible to stay a while and enjoy the friendly community vibe Dougherty offers. Leave the concrete towers and city traffic behind, s-l-o-w down, and take the opportunity for a respite for mind and body. Two forms of lodging are available here. Rock Creek Retreat offers tree houses for big people with all the modern conveniences. Enjoy comfortable beds, kitchens or kitchenettes, and a sitting area. All cabins have TV/DVD but it is highly recommended that you ignore them and relish your surroundings. Enjoy a bird’s eye view on your deck for wildlife watching or relaxing. Or

join other guests around the firepit in the evening. An historic bridge sits on the property and makes an amazing back drop for ceremonies and pictures.
The second lodging is Canyon Hill Cabin and is a great family gathering place. Situated on 30 acres and built with logs cut from the land, up to 10 people can sleep here. In the same family for 3 generations, they now hope guests will make happy memories here. Fully equipped, comfortable and ready for you to unpack…and stake your claim on the elevated deck for some peace and quiet. The wide-open view of the countryside and hiking trails are a bonus. You are bound to get hungry on your visit to this community and a visit to RockHouse Bakery & Gifts will cure that. They serve up sandwiches, soups, salads and occasional special

Wash it down with specialty coffee or tea. Finish your visit with a little retail therapy in the gift shop. If you like to take your home with you, park your wheels at Dougherty RV Park and enjoy the small-town friendliness. Nearby, you will find The Dougherty Store. You won’t find a store like this in Dallas. You can get your gas and groceries. Sit at the table with the locals and get an ear full of gossip, politics or air you own dirty laundry. Oh, and speaking of laundry, you might as well do yours while you are here ‘cause this is also the Laundromat. Seeking a step back in time? Maybe a slower pace? Come for the peace and quiet. Come to get back to nature. Come to totally get away. Just come. Turn your wheels towards Dougherty and enjoy the ride!

Chickasaw History On Display
Tishomingo is the historic capital of the Chickasaw Nation and the county seat of Johnston County. The Chickasaw Nation’s connection with the area precedes 1856, the year Chickasaw citizens gathered at Pennington Creek to draft the tribal constitution. Visitors can experience the Chickasaw story while visiting the Chickasaw National Capitol, Chickasaw Council House Museum, Chickasaw White House and nearby Ft. Washita. Chickasaw National Capitol Sitting atop a hill in Tishomingo, this stately three-story building served as the Chickasaw Nation’s Capitol until Oklahoma statehood. Built of locally-sourced granite in 1898, the restored building now serves as museum of the Chickasaw people. Guided tours are available, free of charge. Chickasaw Capitol Building, 411 W. 9th St., is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, except for federal holidays. For more information 580-371-9835.
Chickasaw White House The Chickasaw White House, in Emet, has served as a backdrop for many important historic and social events since its construction in 1895. The Victorian-style house was the home of Chickasaw Governor Douglas Johnston and his family from 1898-1971. During his 36-year tenure as Chickasaw Governor, Johnston guided the Chickasaw Nation through statehood, with much of the work taking place in his office at the White House.
Chickasaw Council House Museum Visitors will discover the first Chickasaw Council House built in Indian Territory preserved inside the Chickasaw Council House Museum. Exhibits featuring several prominent Chickasaw citizens are part of the permanent collection as well as Chickasaw art, artifacts and archive materials.
Johnston and his wife, Bettie, also hosted political gatherings, tea parties, dances, and weddings at the home. The Chickasaw Nation has restored the building to its full grandeur with 14-foot ceilings, original furnishings and crystal chandeliers. Tours of the Chickasaw White House, 6379 E. Mansion Rd., are offered free of charge 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday, except federal holidays. For more information call (580) 235-7343.
Cultural “make and take” classes are offered. The Chickasaw Council Museum is located next to the Chickasaw Capitol. It is open 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, except for federal holidays.

Beauty and the RV Park
Beautifully shaded sites, walking and biking trails, unique geological formations, a live fishing creek… this is not your typical RV park. That is a fact that you will appreciate during a stay at Rock Creek RV Park. The location of this unusual park sits adjacent to the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge and Rock Creek, a live fishing creek, runs through it. This area of Oklahoma is known for its very distinct granite outcroppings. Many examples of this geology can be seen in the land surrounding the RV park. Guests here are invited to make use of the trails and enjoy some exploring. Of course, the necessary amenities are all here. Full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundromat, pets welcome and an owner/ manager on site to assist you. The sites are nicely spaced to allow everyone some room and most of the park is forested, providing scenic, shady spots. Embark on a nature escape at the place you park your traveling home. Rock Creek RV Park is at 5300 W. Hwy 22, 1 mile west of Tishomingo. Call them (580-371-6782) or check their website (www.rockcreekrvpark.com) for information.

Well -known for its winter trout fishing, opportunities to make a great catch abound at Blue River. From November 1st through March 31st, the river is stocked with rainbows about every week. This area is managed by the
Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, so make sure you have an updated fishing or hunting license, or a conservation pass for day/weekend use. Pauls Valley & Wynnewood History, Culture and Explorations
A few minutes north of the Arbuckle Mountains, on the slopes of the Washita River, are the cities of Pauls Valley and Wynnewood. In 1887, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad constructed tracks along the fertile valley and the beginnings of these towns came to life. Each has deep historical roots as well as small town friendliness. Pauls Valley flourished as a farming and ranching community and became a town with a post office in 1871. Fertile soil, the proximity of the river and the railroad brought about rapid growth and prosperity. Early day rancher, Smith Paul, an adopted Chickasaw citizen, is the towns namesake. Today, Pauls Valley offers visitors a chance to slow down and stroll downtown’s brick streets, a trademark of the city. The Santa Fe Museum taps in to the history and culture and the Toy & Action Figure Museum will delight all ages. The Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer makes daily stops, allowing folks the experience of “riding the rails”. The Family Aquatic Park provides cool recreation to guests. The townsite of Wynnewood began in 1886 as a small settlement in Indian Territory. In the spring of 1887, the town went from a “tent city” into a thriving town. It was named Wynnewood by the residential railroad men, after their hometown in Pennsylvania. Today, many of the first town buildings such as the Eskridge Hotel, bank and historic homes still stand, giving us a glimpse into Wynnewood’s historic past. The Eskridge Hotel was once considered the finest accommodation along the railroad route between Oklahoma City and Dallas. Now owned by the Wynnewood Historical Society, the hotel is open only by advance appointment. (Denese – 580-768-2500) Other notable attractions and events are the brick streets, annual Rodeo (July), Pumpkin Fest (Oct), and the Christmas Celebration (Dec). Both cities are worth a stop as you meander through the Arbuckle Area. Up to date information may be found on their Facebook pages.

Are you up for a scavenger hunt? This game will be different than any other search you have attempted. The object of your pursuit? A collection of characters, serving as fire hydrants and scattered around Ardmore. Start your engines; the hunt is on!
The idea to scatter decorated hydrants throughout town came to Maria Wilkerson as she passed a scrappy looking one on her way to work daily. Taking action, she contacted the Ardmore Fire Department, the City of Ardmore and Ardmore Clean Team. She brought them together with Create Ardmore, an arts and culture coalition, and a plan was formed. Ardmore Turning fireplugs in to fun has been embraced by the community. As of early 2020, a total of 52 hydrants have been creatively transformed. Most will be found in historic downtown Ardmore, but they are beginning to pop up in residential areas. Some will make you chuckle; some will make you think. Most all warrant close attention to the fine details. There were a few guidelines for subject matter - no negativity, no politics, no religion and no advertising. Other than that, the artist could turn the fire hydrant into anything their imagination can come up with. To kick off the project, the first one depicts a fireman’s Dalmatian, complete with orange fire helmet. And that orange cap is an important factor. Unknown to most, a hydrants cap color indicates how much water pressure each tank has behind it. The caps are colored either red, orange, green or blue and the artists must work their design around the cap color. The Ardmore Fire Department cleaned the fire hydrants and painted the caps. The venture has been a helping hand to the fire department and brought splashes of color to downtown. Keep your eyes out for hydrants as cartoon characters, movie themes, heroes, mascots, pets…the list, and the imagination, is endless. Some are themed by the location of a nearby building. You will find help for your hunt on Create Ardmore’s Facebook page. Go to photos and to Fire Hydrant Art. Then cruise downtown and see what you can find.

The park is home to Tucker Tower Museum, which tells the story of the building of the park by C.C.C. and W.P.A. workmen. The adjacent Nature Center has exhibits about the water, natural and cultural history, and green living. Be sure to visit with the on-site naturalist.
The land for Lake Murray State Park was acquired in 1933. Lake Murray Dam was completed in 1937 with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Projects Administration labor. You can still see the original CCC stone structures scattered around the park.
