TRENT STUBBS ’20

A lot of schools promise hands-on learning. Meanwhile, Furman students like Trent are teaming up with professors to start companies based on NASA-funded undergraduate research.

The research done by Trent and Professor of Chemistry Greg Springsteen led to the production of molecules critical to metabolic flux analysis. Say what? Essentially, it allows for the diagnosis of cancer and bacteria more rapidly than existing methods. Their discovery led to the duo starting a company together called Aconabolics LLC.

THE WORLD NEEDS PEOPLE WHO CAN PUT THEORY INTO ACTION.

Furman connects students with unique research and creative opportunities rarely found at the undergraduate level.

RIYA MISAL ’22

With dreams of becoming an OB-GYN physician, public health major Riya felt called to a life-changing internship with the Magdalene Clinic. Riya’s experience at the clinic opened her eyes to the realities and inequities that women in low-income and marginalized communities face, particularly for individuals who suffer from substance abuse.

“I learned so much about healing with compassion and reducing stigmas related to mental health and drug use.”

YOUR CAREER STARTS HERE.

High-impact internships are undeniably valuable, and we’ve infused our curriculum with internship experiences of all kinds, from business and government to arts and nonprofits. More than 600 organizations in the Greenville area and 200 organizations nationwide partner with Furman’s Internship Office to offer pathguiding and real-world opportunities to students. MOST ACCESSIBLE PROFESSORS

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW

UNTIL THEY SHOW YOU

The moment you arrive at Furman, you will be guided by professors, staff and alumni. They’ve been in your shoes, know how to spot the pitfalls, and are always happy to give you the advice they wish someone had given them.

Our intimate size and student-centered approach to advising and mentoring means you’ll feel seen, heard and inspired by a range of mentors who will support you while you are on your Furman path and after you graduate.

PATRICK MUSAU ’17

Mentors make the difference. Just ask technology superstar Patrick Musau ’17. In true Furman fashion, Patrick, who just earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt, is also a co-founder of ARMS Cyber, where he’s creating critical software systems designed to confuse hackers.

Patrick’s mentors knew he was destined for greatness. That’s the job of a mentor. To recognize your spark, point you in the right direction and push you to achieve. In Patrick’s case, it was the wise words of Furman Physics Professor William Baker who reminded him that “the path through the world is technology.”

Meet some of the advisors you may encounter on your Furman journey.

OMAR CARMENATES, D.M.

“What do I find most rewarding about mentoring our students? The process, without a doubt! In music, we are often with our students for their entire undergraduate journey, and so setting short- and long-term goals with them, working toward those goals and ultimately watching students achieve those goals is so rewarding. It’s what fuels me to give each student the best of myself every day.”

ELIZABETH BOUZARTH, PH.D.

“Mentoring allows me the chance to get to know our students on an individual basis. I help them work through concepts in calculus and have big-picture discussions about their interests at and after Furman. The relationships I build with students provide me the vantage point to see their successes, both big and small. It is rewarding to see that I can help shape their pathway.”

INSTITUTES THAT INSPIRE

WE TAKE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. OUR FOUR INSTITUTES ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE UNPRECEDENTED ACCESS TO THE KINDS OF PROBLEM-SOLVING, LEADERSHIP-BUILDING AND PERSPECTIVE-SHIFTING OPPORTUNITIES THAT CHANGE LIVES AND RESTORE COMMUNITIES. YOU WON’T JUST TALK ABOUT SOLVING PROBLEMS IN THE “REAL WORLD,” YOU’LL DO IT.

BROOKE DOMINIAK ’23

From a late-night pizza craving to a promising startup, communication studies major and superstar entrepreneur Brooke Dominiak is launching her on-campus food delivery app with the founding of To-Go Bros. Thanks to The Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Brooke secured education, training and mentoring support for her business and went on to win $10,000 from Furman’s Paladin Pitch Competition and $10,000 in the inaugural Southern Conference Entrepreneurship Challenge.

THE OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES TO KICK-START YOUR DREAMS. THAT’S THE FURMAN ADVANTAGE.

BUILD SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities enables students to tackle urgent sustainability challenges, ranging from energy conservation and waste reduction to transformative climate initiatives. Take part in the projects that contribute to our Gold STARS sustainability rating, like climate action planning, Eco Reps, zero waste game days and the Furman farm and food systems.

TAKE THE PULSE OF YOUR COMMUNITY

The Institute for the Advancement of Community Health empowers students to make a profound difference in clinical and community health. Collaborating with over 80 dedicated community partners, Furman students engage both on and off campus in diverse health initiatives, actively enhancing wellness, championing disease prevention and fostering equity in health outcomes.

LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

The Riley Institute nurtures leaders among students, empowers them to drive positive change, and broadens their perspectives about critical issues. Whether hosting acclaimed speakers, representing the United States at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or engaging in a workshop centered on equity in community, students make a lasting impact as leaders in the community.

WHERE CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION COLLIDE

The Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship fosters a culture of innovation, empowering students to turn their ideas into impactful ventures while preparing them to thrive in the ever-evolving world of business. Through workshops, pitch competitions and networking opportunities with industry leaders, we launch entrepreneurial-minded leaders who transform communities and change the world.

FIND YOURSELF IN A TRUE COMMUNITY

When a sense of belonging settles in, it stays with you for all four years at Furman and beyond.

This is the kind of vibrant, inclusive environment that pulls you in and brings out the best in you. A place that feeds connection and community. A place enriched by a student body representing many experiences and backgrounds. A community that seeks to uphold the inherent worth of individuals in an atmosphere of mutual respect, trust and civility.

WE’RE KNOWN FOR OUR ACADEMICS. BUT THERE’S SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT US – OUR PASSION FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS. FROM THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS TO THE BREATHTAKING BEACHES, THE CAROLINAS ARE A PLAYGROUND FOR OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS.

Experience our home state’s natural beauty while kayaking, mountain biking or whitewater rafting. Here are a handful of our favorite spots.

Caesars Head: Named for the rock formation at the top of the mountain, Caesars Head is a great place to hike or simply gaze over the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the most popular trails in the park, Raven Cliff Falls Trail, leads hikers to a suspension bridge with spectacular views of the falls.

Chattooga River: One of the Upstate’s unwritten rules is that you can’t leave without taking at least one whitewater rafting trip. The Chattooga is less than two hours from Furman, making it a great weekend trip for whitewater rafting.

Lake Keowee: A quick car ride from Furman will land you at one of South Carolina’s most beautiful lakes. Known for its clean, emerald-green waters, the lake is perfect for fishing, boating, waterskiing and camping.

Paris Mountain: Less than five minutes from campus, Paris Mountain is a popular destination for our students. The state park offers hiking, swimming, paddle boat rentals, biking, camping, fishing, bird watching and more.

Swamp Rabbit Trail: Ride, walk or even run the 28-mile trail that goes from downtown Greenville, through Furman and past Travelers Rest.

PALADINS ARE THE PROOF
