Lift off
“I’m sure this had to do with Solange…She tipped off Beyoncé to our writing and Beyoncé approached us. She asked ‘would you guys be interested in writing for my next record?’ And I said of course. When Beyoncé asks, you say yes.” The two-piece wrote and produced five songs for Beyoncé, also including their own previous works. “I added a song that I had written and produced about a year and a half prior… I tweaked some of the lyrics to make it a little more Beyoncé-style. That was a song called 'No Angel' and I threw it into the pot as well.” Sound familiar? That track made it onto Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled album.
Most bands would strive to get their music recognised in an Apple commercial. Some might consider it the peak of their careers. Then there’s Chairlift, the electro pop duo that hit the milestone just after releasing their first record.
WORDS BY TARA SMITH It was only up from there. Since debuting Does You Inspire You in 2008, the pair has gone on to release two more critically acclaimed albums and collaborated with some of music’s biggest names. But according to vocalist, Caroline Polachek, it all started more humbly.
“Up until that point, we were really the DIY band signed to a really small indie label…that whole thing was crazy, it was a lot more tension and more of a platform than we were ever ready for.”
These days, the band’s just finished touring Australia, following the release of their third album, Moth.
According to Polachek, it was their big break. “The day I graduated from college, we hit the road. It’s been a full-time thing ever since,” Polachek says.
In the past, Polachek did more of the writing while Wimberly produced. Now the two share roles.
Then came big break number two.
“On this record we approached it more like a jazz process, really improvising and playing with the sounds. I think that had a lot to do with the fact that we were producing it ourselves.
“We met Solange at Lollapalooza in 2008. She came up to us after our set,” Polachek remembers.
And so, Chairlift was born. It didn't take long before the duo had earned global attention.
“She actually came up with us on stage and did a dance and sang that song. We’ve been friends ever since.”
18
“The whole thing was quite mysterious and under wraps, it was a huge surprise.”
“This album is definitely the most emotional Chairlift record… It’s also much more straightforward and groove-oriented than anything we’ve done before.”
“I was going to school in Colorado and I met a guy in my economics class who was a folk musician. I started playing some back-up in his band. After a few months he [partner Patrick Wimberly] said: ‘Hey, you’ve written more than half the songs that we’re performing. We should call this a band rather than my own name.'”
“We made our first record in NY and then, before I even graduated school, before it even really came out, it got picked up by an Apple commercial.
“I got a text from a friend saying ‘Hey, congrats. Check iTunes.’ And [Beyoncé’s] record had just gone up. I couldn’t believe it, it was so strange to hear that track on the record.
“She said, ‘Hey, I’m Solange. I’m a big fan and I love your song, 'Planet Health'. I actually have a little dance choreographed to it. Can I do it with you guys?’
Chairlift’s friendship with Solange then led to attention from Queen B herself.
“We built a studio in New York and made it ourselves on our own schedule, in a very playful way.” So what else can we expect from a band handpicked by Apple and Beyoncé? “I’m working on a new solo record right now, which I’m really excited about. You guys will hear about that pretty soon.” chairlifted.com

Screen Test While sunscreen is often an afterthought, it probably shouldn’t be. You’re an adult. And as an adult, a sandy mix from your best mate’s beach bag isn’t going to cut it anymore.
Brand: Dermalogica Name: Solar Defense Booster Available from: dermalogica.com.au SPF: 50 Price: $69 Super thin, light and moisturising. Gives a nice little glow without being shiny or greasy. Never has sunscreen felt so good. Smells like: notes of lavender Feels like: silk dreams Rating: Brand: Dr. Jart+ Name: BB Radiance Beauty Balm Available from: Sephora SPF: 30 Price: $63 This thin formula is ideal for a redness cover-up, though it takes a couple of minutes to dry and feels slightly chalky once on. On the plus side, it’s the kind of chalky that lets you know the sunscreen will stay put. Smells like: a not-too-strong sunscreen Feels like: tinted moisturiser Rating: Brand: Mecca Cosmetica Name: Sunbrella Invisible Superspray Available from: Mecca Cosmetica SPF: 50+ Price: $42 Best on ground for summer. A clear mist, it’s easy to apply, extremely lightweight and feels like heaven on tired skin. It can also be sprayed over makeup; perfect for long days in the sun. Smells like: no scent Feels like: a cool sea breeze Rating:
Brand: It Cosmetics Name: Your Skin But Better CC Cream Available from: Sephora SPF: 50+ Price: $58 For those who *have* to wear makeup to the beach. It’s highly pigmented with a thicker consistency, but as a CC cream it’s still lighter than foundation. A hydrating serum and matte finish bring this one home. Smells like: fruity and tropical Feels like: smooth and matte Rating:
Brand: Neutrogena Name: Oil-Free Moisture Facial Moisturiser Available from: Chemist Warehouse SPF: 15 Price: $11.69 Doesn’t quite nail the balance between non-greasy and hydrating. Applies easily, but doesn’t quite glide on. Only SPF 15, so it would be good to see it come in a higher SPF. Smells like: slight sunscreen odour, but not unpleasant Feels like: a little dry Rating:
Brand: The Body Shop Name: Instaglow CC Cream in Peachy Glow Available from: The Body Shop SPF: 20+ Price: $27.95 Heads up, this comes out pink. There’s a slight risk of a sunburnt appearance. When blended properly, however, it colour corrects and brightens, instantly gives the complexion a naturally luminous appearance. Smells like: no scent Feels like: light, non greasy Rating:
Brand: Skinstitut Name: Age Defence SPF 50+ Available from: Laser Clinics Australia and other selected clinics nationwide SPF: 50+ Price: $45 The consistency breeds confidence in its skinprotecting abilities; it’s thick but not greasy. Pat on under makeup in the morning or lather on at the beach. Get you a cream that does both. Smells like: expensive skincare Feels like: versatility Rating:
Brand: Napoleon Perdis Name: Multi-Defence Broad Spectrum SFF 50 + Sunscreen Available from: Napoleon Perdis SPF: 50+ Price: $29 Oil-free, non-sticky and lightweight. Goes on effortlessly, absorbs fast and stays put. Perfect base for under makeup (we wouldn’t expect any less from NP, though). Smells like: low scent Feels like: barely there Rating:

San Taylor
Abysse
Few are doing swimwear better than San Taylor. The label favours honest and raw beauty, delivering an understated collection of swimwear separates. Cuts are minimalist and lines are clean. The range is inspired by the sunbathers of Saint Tropez’s Le Club 55, midcentury Danish poolside furniture by Hans Wegner, and the iconic imagery of Helmut Newton, Peter Lindhberg and Slim Aarons. Pieces are handcrafted locally, with no more than 60 produced per style, and each is individually numbered by the designer herself. Textiles are sourced from Italy, Spain and Australia. This is premium swimwear. santaylor.com.au
Abysse is for those of you who’d rather spend time in the ocean than shopping for swimwear. More concerned with function than frills, the label offers no-fuss swimwear in athletic designs. Its collection of bikinis, wetsuits and vests is built with 100 per cent Japanese limestone neoprene made from eco-friendly rubber. It’s warmer, lighter and more durable than standard neoprene and doesn’t harm the environment. Handmade in California, the range is also fast-drying and UV-protective, designed for use in the sea and on the shore. This is swimwear with all bases covered. abysseofficial.com
Salt Water Sandals
Midnight Swim
Salt Water Sandals are more a summer staple than fish and chips on the beach. The brand has just entered its 76th year in the biz, unsurprising, given the quality of its product. Originally made with scrap leather from military boots during wartime shortages, today, the sandals are just as sturdy. All Salt Water Sandals are waterproof, machine-washable and will mould to the shape of your foot with repeated wear. The brand has also re-released its Classic Slide and Salt Water Sandal in a metallic rose gold colourway, right in time for the salty season. Slide in. saltwatersandals.com.au
Midnight Swim is only in its second season but is already making a name for itself. Created by Australian designer Genevieve Er, the label is inspired by warm, balmy nights and the best beaches around the world. The latest collection brings together athletic and bohemian influences. Think T-back cuts, sporty piping and mesh styles alongside a more relaxed capsule of crochet kinis. Colours span a seasonal selection of burnt orange, wine and military green, with more neutral options included for good measure. There’s something here for everyone. From where we’d rather be. midnightswimwear.com

Isidora
Sunday Supply Co.
While most swimwear has the sole focus of helping you look fly at the beach, Isidora offers a lot more. The socially conscious label was born from a love of travel and a desire to effect change. Isidora works with factories in small villages around the world, generating jobs and significantly aiding workers in building micro-economies within their communities. The label is driven by the idea of an endless summer, with a strong emphasis on clean lines and an expansive colour palette. It’s all delivered through a minimal aesthetic and use of luminous fabrics. There’s a lot to love. isidorathelabel.com
There’s no better way to spend a sunny day than by kicking back on the sand. But we know Aussie summer is unbearably hot and catching rays isn’t all that good for you. Enter Sunday Supply Co. Straight out of a ’60s holiday postcard, the brand specialises in beach umbrellas covered in unique, vintage patterns. Fiola Rose Swim
Zingiber
When we picture our ideal tropical holiday, we’ve got a coconut in hand, are lounging by the pool and wearing a crochet bikini. Fiola Rose has part of that daydream covered. The label boasts a collection of ethically made, hand-crocheted bikinis and classic lycra swimwear styles. To keep you feeling serene, each piece has a rose quartz crystal sewn in, which is known for its healing properties. Inspired by ’90s styles, Fiola Rose Swim exudes a feminine aesthetic across cuts designed to flatter and enhance curves. To keep up the good vibes, the label also donates $1 from each design to women’s charities in the Philippines. fiolaroseswim.com
You mightn't know it but you’ve probably seen Zingiber’s swimwear before. Regularly spotted on celebs (Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian have already put through personal requests), the Perth-based label is known for designs that push the boundaries of swimwear. Designer Nicola Spicer focuses on pieces that are form-flattering for every body type, with a range of full-support and underwire options. Each design is crafted in limited runs, some as small as 50, ensuring quality and exclusivity. All prints are designed in-house, with high-end fabrics used. This is what summer looks like. zingiber.com.au
Zahlo Swim
Cantik Swimwear
There are a few things that make Zahlo Swim different. Designed by a small creative team on the Gold Coast, this label knows a lot about the beach. Practical and sustainable pieces make up the collection, with hand-painted patterns and prints that are made to be mixed and matched. Each print is exclusive to the label and varies slightly from piece to piece, splashed across materials sourced from small Australian businesses. Zahlo Swim has modernised classics to create pieces that don’t break the bank. Cuts are practical and contemporary. Just like swimwear should be. zahloswim.com
Cantik makes swimwear to celebrate femininity. Each collection boasts daring cuts that showcase the uniqueness of women’s bodies, with premium fabrication and quality detailing front-and-centre. The label’s new collection, Artillery, is its first to be made from ECONYL. The fabric is 100 per cent regenerable and recycled from post-consumer waste. In addition to doing its bit for the environment, the label works to empower its manufacturers and employees. Cantik ensures fair wages and good working conditions for all its Bali-based staff. This is swimwear with heart (and booty). cantikswimwear.com

HOW WRITING WORKS
THE DANGERS OF TRUFFLE HUNTING
FUCKING APOSTROPHES
Roslyn Petelin
Sunni Overend
Simon Griffin
Poor Roslyn Petelin. I can only imagine the pressure she felt when writing a book on how writing works. And while I could sit here and nitpick her writing, I won’t. Because she did a pretty great job. Consider this an exhaustive manual to writing, from reasoning, to tone, to how readers perceive words. It’s basically a holy bible of writing. Cons: with any key academic authoritative text, it’s a little dry. However it’s easy to navigate and a good resource to keep on your desk at work. As Petelin puts it, there are people who are working writers and people who are writing workers. Unless your trade is in manual labour, you, my friend, are a writing worker. You’ll put this book to good use.
The cover of The Dangers of Truffle Hunting reads: “glamorous, voluptuous and bursting with passion.” Voluptuous. A book. This was going to be some trashy shit and I couldn’t wait. While yes, it was certainly trashy, I was surprised to find some key moments of *depth* woven throughout. It’s kind of like the rom-com cocky guy who, in a moment of weakness, accidentally lets slip his nice-guy interior. That guy is insanely attractive. So is this book. It has it all – lust, love, fame, wine, rich people, the whole shebang. It had me rooting for the protagonist and left me heart-warmed throughout. No, it won’t make you look as intelligent as a Penguin Classics book cover might, but hey. It’s still a good beach read.
If you, like me, can't stand incorrect apostrophe use, welcome. This is a safe place, one in which we rag on those who use possessive apostrophes for plurals. Simon Griffin is part of our frustrated inner sanctum and so, he released a pocket book with dual purpose: 1) to educate the masses. 2) to deliver a tangible resource for us to physically thrust upon those less educated, all while yelling 'get it right, goddammit!'. It’s really not that hard. At least, not when Griffin explains it. Complex grammar rules are laid out in layman's terms, alongside explanations of why we often get them wrong. It’s the perfect passive aggressive gift for that person who thinks your the best.
ALBUM REVIEWS AWAKEN, MY LOVE!
24K MAGIC
DARKNESS AND LIGHT
Childish Gambino
Bruno Mars
John Legend
When another reviewer promises you “Pink Floyd meets R&B”, you expect big things. And when that album is from Childish Gambino? Perhaps even bigger things. Thankfully, right from the first few minutes of opener ‘Me and Your Mama’, this album really does deliver on that monumental promise. ‘Have Some Love’ and ‘Boogieman’ take us back to funk in the ’60s, while ‘Riot’ channels Prince. However, some of that experimental flavour wanes as the album progresses. Instead of a sequel to Because the Internet, it probably acts as a prequel. It’s primal, intuitive and brave – as opposed to fully formed and ultra-modern. That retro vibe, however, seems to suit Childish perfectly.
56
24K Magic opens with the title track. It’s the musical equivalent of pulling out the main course before the entrée has even hit the table, but sets the scene pretty accurately for this cracker of a record. For some reason, Halle Berry delivers a cameo. But don’t hold it against Mars, who’s on fire here. If you’re looking for an album that is a masterclass in old school funk, yet doesn’t take itself too seriously, then 24K is your new summer jam. It delivers tracks that are sure to put you in a great mood. I mean, one of the lyrics is “hashtag blessed.” How can you not love it?
I must confess: I really can't stand John Legend. But when I heard that his new album was to be produced by Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes), I was intrigued enough to give The Legend another crack. (Meanwhile, look up Sound & Color, great album.) I was hoping Mills would lend some much-needed grit to Legend’s cleancut musical persona, and he did. Well, kind of. There are still key changes to soaring vocal crescendos and piano melodies accompanying sad minor flourishes, but there are a few rough diamonds, too. Title track ‘Darkess and Light’ brings late-night sexy to the album, while ‘What You Do To Me’ is surprisingly cool. More of that, please.

Out & About The Iconic Swim Show, Sydney The Iconic knows how to celebrate summer, kicking off the season with a runway on Bondi Beach. A first for the iconic stretch of sand, the event showcased the retailer’s summer offering. It’s a goodie. Ready-to-wear and swim collections from the likes of Bec & Bridge, Nookie and Stella McCartney Swim were presented, while guests watched from their spot on the sand. theiconic.com.au
Ladurée Champagne and Macaron Brunch, Melbourne A little slice of Paris came to Melbourne last month, with the opening of the Ladurée Tea Room in Chadstone Shopping Centre. The French patisserie celebrated its first Melbourne tea room by welcoming guests with a brunch spread to rival any other. The event delivered a surplus of Ladurée’s globally renowned macarons, complete with champagne on arrival. And because fashion and food create the ultimate love affair, attendees dressed appropriately for the occasion, complementing the pastel-toned macarons. Parfait. chadstone.com.au

FJ FE ATU RE
Born to Try 2. Stop Dieting
See, the problem with New Year’s resolutions is that we go too big. You say you want to have Bella Hadid’s body by April, but before you know it, it’s the third week of March and you’re grating parmesan on everything, like the genius you are. If you want to eat healthier and stop drinking so much, then do just that. Eat more greens, eat less sugar and drink less alcohol. It’s a simple and effective way to ensure you will never have to face the ‘diet’ resolution ever again. 3. Shut up They say we gossip because it forges strong bonds with our fellow gossipers. And supposedly, there’s some clinical evidence to support the fact that it can feel better to use creative language than it feels to receive a back rub. But much like those inevitably sore back muscles, you’re bound for some subconscious knots following that bellyache session with Laura in accounts. If you’re going to harp on about how much you hate your friend’s hair, tell it to your dog. Those guys will love you no matter what. 4. Start walking. Everywhere
You know when you’re on a packed commuter train at 6pm on a Wednesday and your hip is awkwardly pressed up against a sweaty man and you just think to yourself ‘this time next year, I RESOLVE to not be in this exact situation’? But just like the sly jerk it is, time ticks along. Before you know it, it’s December again, that sweaty man is even sweatier because of global warming and it’s basically End of Days. 1. Make a Note to Cleanse your Social Media
BY A NNIE C ARROL L
So here we are, in our collective discontent, vowing to make major changes to our lives in 2017. This year, let’s avoid the annual shame-spiral that inevitably hits each June from not having managed to ‘make more money’ or ‘lose 8kg’. Let’s change tact. It might be a good idea to start with some goals that have staying power.
58
If you’re a true ambassador of your generation, you’ll feel anxiety at the thought of not clocking your Instagram feed. Leaving your Snapchats unopened will make you twitchy. But this is not a lesson in using social media less. Frankly, there are enough naysayers out there who simply haven’t woken up to the fact that all those food prep videos are important. You need some meditation in your day. No, this is your resolution to unfollow, unfollow, unfollow. Leave behind those Instagram accounts that should have you feeling inspired, but invariably leave you lost in a sea of boring quotes in handwritten cursive. Your time is precious.
The return of the gym membership was inevitable, in many ways. Much like the revival of Calvin Klein or Cindy Crawford, what was cool in the ’90s is apparently, once again, very much an aspiration for young people. But the issue with the gym, as we know, is the eye-watering price of a basic membership. We so easily forget we have a gym built into our bodies! An hour every day of brisk walking has been proven to pretty much solve every health issue you’ve got. And the time on your own is also a bit of a luxury. Also, no more commuter trains – win! 5. Start a Side Hustle Another classic resolution is to ‘make more money’, as though it’s a simple case of thoughtfully deciding to become a baller. Without a plan, it’s about as effective as wishing for Aziz Ansari to be your best friend. It would be nice, but it’s not going to happen. Working 9-5 will not a baller make. You’ve got to hustle: start a brand, a blog, an Etsy account selling repurposed mason jars. You might even be smart enough to get into the stock market and if you are, let’s talk. Because if 2016 taught us anything, it’s that it’s time to do things differently. 2017. It’s going to be a doozy.
