Wearing slippers to work It’s cold. Real cold. So cold, in fact, that we’ve turned our office into some sort of pseudo-hibernation chamber. A quick look under our desks will reveal sub-par office attire, including blankets, explorer socks and best of all, slippers. Yep, slippers at work. Get around it. It’s honestly the best thing since sliced bread (or since our office realised the coffee machine was working again).
I love... filling out surveys.
When I grow up I want to be... on Grand Designs.
The most embarrassing thing I ever wore was... flared jeans and Ugg boots
paired with a lime green off-the-shoulder top and a Ripcurl visor.

My greatest strength is... my team
We’ll be the first to admit that day-to-day, we’re pretty lazy when it comes to our hair. Proof is in the fact that a messy bun is the office staple (and not the I’ve-done-this-for-hours-and-it’s-effortlesslycool type). Thankfully, REDKEN has been helping us pick up our hair game, sharing deets on how to get the best runway looks from MBFWA. The Scoop
Soulland Soulland began as a small company specialising in graphic T-shirts. It’s since grown into an internationally-recognised label, interpreting classic menswear to something more contemporary. Designer, Silas Adler, brings fine Scandinavian craftsmanship to his work, spanning a timeless range of men’s suits and accessories. The label is now available online and from premium stockists, including North Collective. northcollective.com.au
Nique Nique’s W16 collection Reflector is inspired by reflection, both visually and mentally. Reflecting on the brand’s history, Nique reinterpreted its bestselling styles for the new season. The range as a whole is impressive but the jackets are what you’ll want to keep an eye on. The women’s offering is heavy and oversized, with intricate pocket details and asymmetrical stitching. As for the guys, there’s a little something for everyone. The men’s range is practical in both style and colour, with nifty little details like internal pockets and multi panel lining. nique.com.au
Bailey Nelson Bailey Nelson has long been renowned for its collection of cool handcrafted eyewear. The new range channels this vision through a set of portraits captured by fashion photographer, Rene Vaile. The shoot features the brand’s signature round styles alongside new additions and a range of polarised clip-on sun lenses. Paired with relaxed styling and block-coloured backdrops, the result is almost as cool as the brand itself. baileynelson.com.au

Dr. Martens If you caught Beyoncé’s Superbowl halftime show, you may be already familiar with the Dr. Martens heeled boot. Behind Queen B herself stood a bevy of back-up dancers sporting the shoe. Available in both black and grey, the boots feature a thick padded collar and a ridged air-cushioned sole. The black features a satin gloss exterior with a luxurious supple feel. The soft-grey counterpart is lightweight and finely textured, made of soft nappa leather. For stockists call 1800 655 154

Vans x Nintendo Hold onto your rumble pack. Vans and Nintendo have collaborated to bring us a nostalgic collection of footwear and accessories. With graphics from Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Donkey Kong and Legend of Zelda, it’s going to be great. The 8bit-inspired prints will be available in a range of products, spanning backpacks, tees, hats and of course, footwear. The kicks are bright, colourful and attention-grabbing, while the tees are an option better suited to less conspicuous fans; available in more neutral colours. It’s set to be released in August, in both adult and kids' sizes. For stockists call 1800 655 154
We’ve been spending some time hanging around the Whitehouse Institute of Design lately. It started when we went to shoot street style at their Melbourne campus. The students (who were very well-dressed, by the way) shared a little about their classes, confirming the school’s reputation as one of Australia’s leading privately owned design institutions. The school offers a collection of designbased qualifications, accredited certificates and short courses, spanning fashion, interior and creative direction and styling. Enrolment is now open for September 2016. whitehouse-design.edu.au
The Fifth Denim The Fifth Label has just launched its first core denim collection and there’s a few reasons why we’re excited. One: its philosophy revolves around the relentless search for the perfect pair of ‘it’ jeans. This means they understand exactly what we want in denim and that it’s near impossible to find. Two: they’ve found it. Three: the debut line spans flared, cropped and drop-crotch jeans, shorts, a jacket and a skirt. Four: the shorts aren’t butt-cheek short. Five: it’s all easy to wear, as denim should be. thefifthlabel.com

Sister Act Like a recipe? I ask. “Yeah! Like a recipe. For a really sweet cake. But hidden inside the cake is something more… serious,” the girls laugh. I laugh. I’m laughing with Beyoncé’s protégés. Okay, no more Beyoncé. What’s even more topical is the music video that accompanies ‘Drop’, the first track on the EP. It’s got horses, a dancing guy with pink hair, rolling green pastures, a sparkling sunset and the girls rocking some seriously swanky threads. “The horses in the video were such angels,” exclaims Chloe, who had never ridden a horse prior. “My horse’s name was Flax, and apparently he’s just made his movie debut. I rode a famous horse,” she chuffs, proudly. I wonder if Flax knows he carried a famous girl. Often photographed connected by the ponytail, Chloe and Halle aren’t afraid to admit they’re inseparable. “My sister is my best friend,” says Halle, who politely prefaces her responses with: “now this is Halle speaking.” I guess it’s easy to get the girls’ voices confused, especially when they’re so good at finishing each other’s sentences.
Meet the soulful sisters dropping symphonies under the guidance of Queen Bey.
WORDS BY AMY CAMPBELL
Chloe and Halle Bailey are living, breathing (and singing) proof that persistence pays off. Nine years ago, the sisters launched their YouTube channel. Perched in front of a webcam in their Atlanta basement, they set to work recording renditions of Rihanna, Beyoncé and Lorde. Last year, their cover of Beyoncé’s ‘Pretty Hurts’ caught the eye (and ear) of Queen Bey herself. And today, under the management of Beyoncé’s record label Parkwood Entertainment, the duo’s soulful, sassy sound has the music industry pricking its ears for more. OK, I guess this example is an outlier. Not every budding musician covering Beyoncé on YouTube is going to land a contract with The Queen. But when divine talent and persistence combine, the stars align. Or so they did for this sister act, who recently added a cameo in Bey’s Lemonade to their fastgrowing list of accolades. Under the moniker Chloe x Halle, they’ve officially been dubbed “Beyoncés protégés.”
Enough about Beyoncé. Seventeen and 16 respectively, after bursting on the scene via their YouTube channel, Chloe and Halle have made the journey from social media to professional recording studio. It's here they recently celebrated the release of their first EP, Sugar Symphony. “When my sister and I came up with the title, we just wanted a cool alliteration,” laughs Chloe, the chattier of the two. Throughout our short conversation, the girls talk a lot about complex songwriting conventions. They’re conscious of using metaphors, allegory, similes… a consciousness that indicates a musical maturity well beyond their years. In fairness, you can’t expect any less from two girls raised on a diet of Jazz and Southern Soul. Growing up, Halle’s favourite artist was Billie Holiday. “As the EP grew, the title took on more meaning. The Sugar is the harmony and the sweet, softer melodies. But the hard beats and the 808s that make your heart rumble… they’re the Symphony. Together, it’s Sugar Symphony!”
But when booming from the verses of tracks like ‘Thunder’ and ‘Lazy Love’, the girl’s crescendos are easier to tell apart. According to Chloe, they have their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia to thank for such tremendous vocal chords. “It’s so humid in Atlanta, and the humidity and moisture is really great for your voice. You might notice some great singers are from Atlanta [Usher, Cee Lo Green and Kelly Rowland call the city home]. It’s 'cause the climate helps cultivate such a strong voice.” Before our time is up, I can’t help but bring it back to Beyoncé. Chloe and Halle are part of the girl gang that strut their stuff through Lemonade. Was it hard for the sisters to keep the spectacle a secret? “Actually, not at all!” replies Chloe. “Me and my sister [sic] would just talk about it between ourselves all the time.” The fact Bey entrusted the girls with one of the greatest musical secrets of 2016 is also indicative of their maturity. And the fact they’ve just dropped an EP, but are already working on an album (and tour!) proves these divas are darn dedicated. For now, they’re off to band rehearsal. So while they’re tuning, we’re staying tuned. chloeandhalle.com

COTTONS x DOODAD&FANDANGO
Well, look at this. Who knew tampons dangling from your ears could look so damn cute? Don’t go racing to your tampon stash, though. That would just be awks. Instead, let us introduce you to this super cute collab between Cottons and arty jewellery label, Doodad&Fandango. Together, they’re bringing fem hygienethemed jewellery to your ears. And there’s one bloody good reason why.
18
Twenty per cent of all profits from the collab will go directly to Share The Dignity. It’s an organisation doing great work, providing sanitary products to homeless and at-risk women. We applaud Cottons for their great work, but it’s not the first time. The brand was also the first to introduce 100 per cent cotton tampons to the Australian market in the early ’90s. Today, Cottons continues to deliver an all-natural product and furthers its work in ensuring feminine hygiene products are available to all (yay!).
As for the earrings, they’re pretty bloody great. Each pair is made from glitter and gloss perspex, with a gold laminate backing and Swarovski crystals for a fancy touch. But our fave aspect is the faces. The heads of the tampons feature one happy and one angry face, to maximise cuteness and represent how most of us feel when Aunt Flo comes to visit. Cottons x Doodad&Fandango is available now through the Cottons website. cottonsshop.com

#RedkenReady MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK AUSTRALIA RESORT 2016/17
Fashion Week is done and dusted for another year and it’s not just the fashion that had us feeling inspired. This year, the official Hair Partner, REDKEN 5th AVENUE NYC, was responsible for creating the hottest hair looks seen on the most photographed runways including Bec & Bridge, Dion Lee and Zhivago. It was all about textured locks: think loose braids, glitter-covered ponytails and frayed up-dos. We had priority backstage access to bring you the highlight looks. Visit REDKEN'S new webstore for 24/7 access to all the trends, expert tips and products you need to recreate the season's most enviable looks. shop.redken.com.au

The Next Chapter
We caught up with Chloe and Simon before one of their Sydney shows to chat awkward family gatherings, fave touring essentials and what we can expect from their upcoming EP Well Worn.
INTERVIEW BY VERONICA STANFORD
PHOTOGRAPHER JAMES J ROBINSON @ AEVOE STYLIST YI NG HAIR AND MAKEUP VIC ANDERSON @ DEBUT MANAGEMENT
24
Tell us about the process behind Well Worn. The EP was written in Simon’s bungalow/studio, with the main single having 28 different versions. It was a long process that we learnt a lot from. It’s mostly about growing up and out of things, and moving on. You’ve described the first single ‘Bolide’ as the dance track of the release. What can we expect from the others? Some pop with UK garage influences, but mostly RnB. You guys had a heap of interest in your debut EP, did you feel any pressure to match that with Well Worn? Most definitely. We were still figuring out our sound during this EP, as well as wanting to do better than our previous work. We had expectations, so that was a main reason we put pressure on ourselves when writing Well Worn. How did you guys originally start writing together? Were you always this close? No, we weren’t always close. Our mums had this idea that we should do some recording together, so we did it for them. We were those awkward cousins that only saw each other at family get-togethers but music brought us a lot closer. We realised how much we had in common once we spent some quality time together.
25
Does being family make it easier to share your opinions with one another? Particularly if someone suggests something musically the other doesn’t like?
Do you have a favourite piece of clothing?
At first we didn’t really voice our opinions, we just wrote whatever together because we’re both people who don’t really like conflict. Now that we’re closer and have progressed as musicians, we’re more opinionated. We generally write well together, even though it can get tense at times. We take it more seriously now.
Simon, how do you balance your time between your other musical projects (I’lls etc)?
You guys will be hitting up Splendour soon, what can punters expect from your set? New songs that won’t be out for a very, very long time. If Kllo’s music could be the soundtrack to any movie, what would it be? Interstellar. What are your touring essentials?
26
Powerade and coffee.
At the moment the UNIQLO Heattech range. It keeps us warm in our heater-less studio.
Google calendar and no weekends. Is there anything in particular you want to achieve as Kllo? We want to get to a point where we’re happy with how far we’ve come and what we have been able to give to others. We still feel like there’s a long way to go for us, before we are satisfied with what we’ve written. What’s set for the rest of the year? Writing an album and plenty of touring.

Groom Service Fellas, sigh a breath of relief. Gone are the days when purchasing moisturiser meant hiding your head in shame. Gone are the days you had to lie to your girlfriend about why your hands are so soft. Gone are the days when growing a beard meant it was unkempt, un-smooth and unappealing. It’s officially OK to take your grooming next level.

Melbourne Beard Oil
Men's Biz
Simple name, simple concept. Melbourne Beard Oil was born out of necessity for those who suffer the devastating effects of dry beards. Itchy skin and beardruff (yes, it's an actual, real thing) are discomforts no bearded person should have to suffer. So the brand uses four different base oils to make you a little less Hagrid, a little more suave. Macadamia, almond, coconut and emu oil are mixed with scents like absinthe, bourbon, vanilla and coffee. You can even get a little $8 sample bottle if you fear commitment. For a cheeky 15% off, just use the code FJMAG. melbournebeardoil.com.au
Known for its well-curated selection of grooming products, Men’s Biz is going one better. The retailer is stocking one of Australia’s most extensive ranges of niche and independent men’s fragrances. The handpicked offering includes cult favourites from Penhaligon’s, Tauer, Acqua di Parma, Etat Libre d’Orange, Nasomatto, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Frapin and Amouage. And if you feel like it’s time you adopted your own signature scent, Men’s Biz would love to hook you up. Simply email or drop by their Sydney or Melbourne stores and you’ll leave with a few samples to test drive. mensbiz.com.au

VITAMAN
Burly Fellow
You know you’re onto a good thing when your grooming products are almost good enough to eat. VITAMAN specialises in premium men’s grooming products that are all au naturel. The entire product range is chemical-free, never tested on animals and all packaging is fully recyclable. So you'll look and feel good. Created with native Australian botanicals, VITAMAN ensures each product is of the highest purity and quality. And if that’s not enough, VITAMAN sets itself apart using an organic white tea base in each product instead of water, to promote healthy (and happy) skin. www.vitaman.com.au
Let us tell you a story about Burly Fellow. Like all great ideas, it was a concept born in the back of a Melbourne pub. Its founders wanted to create beard care products and male grooming kits that focus on quality ingredients. We’re talking shampoos that don’t make your hair too fuzzy, beard oils in hip flask packaging and tobaccoscented beard balms. From argan oil to jojoba, there’s a real focus on all-natural ingredients to keep you looking handsome. These guys are also proud supporters of BeyondBlue, meaning a share of profits are donated with each purchase. Feel good, look good. burlyfellow.com
Fatboy
RY.com.au
Admittedly, most ‘I woke up like this’ looks actually start at 5am and require a good hour in front of the mirror. But for those trying to perfect that carefree ’do, there’s a pretty easy solution (and it doesn’t require getting up before the sun rises). Fatboy is a haircare brand that started on a Manhattan apartment stovetop. It’s grown a little since then and is now a front runner in hair styling – creating putty, waxes and creams for achieving that second-day-hair look. And with products like the Boss Dog styling cream, you’ll be lifting your hair game in no time. fatboyhair.com
In a world where beard oil exists, there can be no denying we all like taking care of ourselves, even the boys. RY.com.au understands the importance of male grooming, which is why it stocks a specially curated line of men's products. Good move. Brands like American Crew, Redken and Uppercut are among the brands chosen by style blogger Marco Volpato for the website, who evidently knows his stuff. Cleansers, moisturisers, cologne, shaving kits and everything else you can think of have been carefully selected for the guys to up their grooming game. They’ve even got beard oil. Treat yourself boys. ry.com.au

THE CAREER CODE
WITH YOUR LIFE [YOU ARE RAOUL MOAT]
AVAILABLE: A MEMOIR OF HEARTBREAK, HOOKUPS, LOVE, AND BRUNCH
Andrew Hankinson
Matteson Perry
Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power
Let’s begin with some background: Raoul Moat was an ex-bodybuilder who, upon his release from jail, killed his ex’s new boyfriend; shot his ex; fired a gun into a policeman’s eye; then ran and hid in the woods for a week before killing himself. Unsurprisingly, Moat was demonised by the media. But one journalist, Andrew Hankinson, trawled through court documents, transcripts, diaries and recordings to deliver a factual and empathetic account of Moat’s story. Written in the second person (yes, you are Raoul Moat), it positions you to think: ‘hey, if I was semi-unhinged, the system failed me and everything I loved was taken from me, perhaps I would do that too.’ Or not...
This book can best be summarised by its dedication. It starts: “For my wife, who somehow managed to be nothing but supportive of a book about all the women I slept with before her.” And that’s kind of how the book rolls on. Refreshingly honest, it’s full of warmth and gives rise to multiple lols. You know, the kind of lols that cause you to laugh, pause, then read out whole passages to whoever will listen? Like a glorious Girls x Entourage mashup, it sheds light on the most cringeworthy aspects of dating, in a comforting (hilarious) way that makes you think ‘me too!’ Because we’ve all been there, and it’s nice to know you’re not alone.
This one is brought to you by the creators of WhoWhatWear, so you know it’s going to be good. An aesthetically-pleasing hardback (would you expect anything less?), The Career Code shares practical advice and life hacks more relevant than any self-help book you may have read. It also comes in the beautifully easy-to-digest format of lists. Lists! Dishing advice for all stages of your career, it starts early at finding what you want from work, and kicks all the way up to management. With enough pearls of wisdom to string Daisy Buchanan’s wedding necklace (that’s a Baz Luhrmann reference FYI), this is one to keep on your desk and flick through on the reg.
YOU COULD DO SOMETHING AMAZING
ALBUM REVIEWS THE COLOUR IN ANYTHING James Blake Can we take bets on who's going to drop the next surprise album? As a reviewer, it's starting to get a little tiring. That said, opening track 'Radio Silence' is possibly my favourite thing James Blake has ever released. It's a perfect example of the soulful, electronic melancholy that’s become synonymous with Blake's work. But after three full length albums, it would be nice to shake things up a bit. There's synths, piano and vocal distortion; it's definitely a James Blake album. The Colour in Anything is a little looser than his previous records with its production, but I feel like the best material here is when he adheres to more traditional song structures. Otherwise, it all tends to blur into the background a little too much. Bon Iver cameo track ‘I Need A Forest Fire’ is another standout that highlights this. James, it might be time to go pop!

KPP BEST
SKIN
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Flume
It feels like J-Pop has been tipped as the next big thing for a very long time now. It’s sugary sweet, insanely catchy and quirky in that inimitable Japanese style. But is the culture gap here just a little too wide? Kyary has always been one of the more approachable J-Pop artists and KPP Best collects the singles from her mainly Japan-only releases into one giant, hypercoloured collection. Debut single ‘Ponponpon’ is legitimately amazing. It’s totally insane. You can sing along despite it being in Japanese and the video features skeletons, breakdancing drag and fart jokes. At 24 tracks long, new listeners to the world of J-Pop might find KPP Best overwhelming. Just like overdosing on an entire packet of lollies, too much J-Pop can leave you feeling a little giddy. Skim through the collection, pick out your favourites and make sure to watch the videos – the fashion alone is out of this world.
Hey look, it’s another surprise album release! This time Australian wonder boy, Flume premiered Skin via a Facebook stream, with an all-star cast of guests. Mixing a number of radio-friendly vocal tracks with experimental instrumentals, Skin finds Flume really solidifying his sound and his standing in the electronic music world. It’s a surprisingly epic album that, thanks to the many guest singers, still maintains a level of relatable humanity. Closing track ‘Tiny Cities’, with Beck on vocal duties, is a gorgeous midtempo ballad and has a level of restraint that proves not every track requires an epic bass drop. There still could’ve been a bit of streamlining done here, with a few instrumentals looping a little too long, but when you’re “aiming to tear the universe apart” with your work, sometimes you have to take a little longer than your average Garageband beat maker.
