Shannon Whitford

Howdy, all! My name is Shannon Whitford, and I am running for Mature Age Students Officer.

I am currently studying microbiology and have previously completed a Bachelor of Psychology. Through this journey, I have a deep long-lasting connection to Flinders. Through being a volunteer with the Mature Age Collective and a Topic Representative, I’ve developed the professional skills to advocate for the diverse experiences Mature Age students face.

I regularly see Mature Age students go without adequate support. Many students have shared their experience of feeling forgotten despite representing approximately 50% of the student population. This is why I will advocate for increased visibility for Mature Age students

Mature Age students experience unique issues that are often overlooked, from difficulties acclimating to modern teaching styles, to pre-existing responsibilities such as children or caring duties.

This is why if elected we aim to expand support for and create increasingly suitable spaces where parents and carers can feel comfortable. As well as cultivating a space where they feel like they have a sense of community that is noticed and nurtured. By providing dedicated spaces like the Mature Age Space and ensuring parents’ rooms aren’t locked away from students.

I am running with the Activate team because they have proven themselves to be considerate, welcoming, and passionate in their mission to fight for the students of Flinders.

Peter Day

I first studied at FUSA in the 1980s as a mature age student and returned in 2020. I have 50 years working experience, 5 years volunteering experience, plenty of life skills and am enthusiastic about creating the best environment for mature age students.
